Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect
1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.
2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.
3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.
4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.
5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.
6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.
7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.
8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.
9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.
10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

ARA COMMUNITY
ARA
Arizona Residential Architects
INVITATION TO LAND OWNERS OR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPERS The Arizona Residential Architects (ARA) is a distinguished organization of 15 leading residential architectural firms who would like to provide resources and design talent to land owners, real estate individuals or firms, builders, or residential developers for the purposes of creating a new community, neighborhood, or unique collection of homes. The ideal candidates would be seeking the assistance of the ARA as a creative design and/or development coordination partner to help facilitate new community or neighborhood planning ideas and initiatives. The ARA would bring the talents and experience of 15 uniquely diverse residential architectural firms to the project’s residential design opportunities. In addition, the ARA has developed a network of over 100 trade partners. This network includes residential builders, interior designers, residential product manufacturers or representatives, and trade service provision companies. All this knowledge, product resources and experience can be brought to benefit an identified project. The goal is to identify an opportunity where a parcel of land is between 2ac up to 15ac, or more, wherein the ARA Community Team can design a new inspiring residential neighborhood community that creates awareness and promotes new lifestyle and environmental initiatives incorporating best practices, including recognized platforms for sustainability, such as LEED, and/or Green building practices. The ideal opportunity would allow all 15 members of the ARA to design homes for this model community.
Contact Dale Gardon at (480) 948-9666 to make an appointment to meet with the ARA Community Design Team to discuss your potential opportunity.

Perspectives
By Eddie Jones AIA Why architects? Why architecture? Sometimes, I step back and remember, not everyone knows an architect. Most don't understand what the professional title fully implies. However, I’m pretty sure, in general, people think architects are smart and cool. I do. Apparently, so does my wife! But I’m not interested in individual architects. I am interested in their collective impact on individual communities and the world. Building is very powerful, for good or for bad. But architecture—in my mind—is typically good. However, there are too many bad buildings. How can you tell? The outside kills the street and the inside disrespects its occupants. The space within and in-between is oppressive and dull. The exterior imposes itself on the landscape, ignores environmental responsibility and, well, just takes up space. At best, a bad building is benign, nondescript and forgettable. At worst, a bad building can

inflict damage; physical and intellectual damage. Let me be clear, most buildings are not examples of architecture. There are few structures qualified to be called architecture and the ratio gets more and more unbalanced with each passing year. The bad has consistently outweighed the good and this isn’t a new trend. Despite this history of architecture being outpaced by bad buildings, the influence of great architecture is undeniable. There are moments when we know our life has been enriched by the experience of a great building. It is not uncommon to feel an emotional response to a historic cathedral, a thoughtfully designed home or a new public art museum. Most cities will showcase their most admired cultural buildings regardless of an architectural era. Frank Lloyd Wright said,“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.” My favorite definition of architecture was made by the great 20th Century architect Louis Kahn, “Buildings shelter mankind. Architecture shelters the spirit of mankind.” I still believe most architects aspire to achieve architecture. At least they start out that way. A typical architect’s story begins before high school which, by definition, makes it a “calling” more than a profession. For me, I was six years old when I decided my life’s direction. Make it to college and we endure a five to six year education, broad ranging as it is exhausting. Additionally, each state requires those holding an architectural degree to apprentice in an actual practice for a predetermined number of years, usually two to three. Following internship, we take the state registration exams, equivalent to the bar exam for lawyers. Some years, only 1/3 of the students will pass the test. The test is grueling. A passing grade allows the once young aspirant to finally call themselves an architect. Their average age is 32. The educational gauntlet requires endurance, conviction, and commitment. Those who become architects do so because they are in love. They are inspired to make a better world. We remain forever youthful because each new day is an exercise in the complexity of engineering coupled with the self-fulfillment of creativity. Problem solving is our job. Most of the time—not all the time—but most of the time, solving those problems is a wonderful good time. I enjoy telling students I have not worked since I graduated from college. That said, the commitment to genuinely honor a lifetime of passion requires the highest level of perseverance. Another esteemed architect, Glenn Murcutt, warns young architects “you want to end your practice the same way you started it,” referring to initial high 2ethical standards and the relentless quest for design excellence. In my opinion, the manifestation of an architect’s measure can be discerned more obviously in2 residential design than in commercial/industrial design. The house is an architect’s playground and

design lab. Expertise is honed, theories articulated and the consequences of one’s imposed design decisions are quickly felt. Our clients’ limited budgets—they are ALWAYS limited—have to be taken seriously. It is this monetary respect and the highest of self-imposed standards which motivates us to pursue the most elusive and therefore, most valuable of all design skills… restraint. I have spent forty five

years learning restraint. What to leave; what to leave out; when to insist; when to let go. These lessons are the result of longevity, experience and maturity. You may find this surprising but I think being an old architect is a lot more fun than being a new architect. The accumulation of experience can, in itself, create opportunities to practice beyond one’s local community. Of course, any opportunity close to home allows the reexamination of familiar criteria and new interpretation. Home is the ultimate comfort zone, sufficient to inspire but also reason enough to leave. It's not easy. One only has to understand the climactic differences between, say, Arizona and Oregon. The range of knowledge necessary to excel in different climate zones is hard earned and requires patience. Factoring in local history, culture, density, demographics, ethnicity and topography further complicates the challenge of designing in a wide variety of environments. But these factors are essential to make elevated design decisions. Each community, each client, each site deserves a specific architectural response. Those responses are as varied as the weather. We should expect architects to invent an architecture appropriate for each situation, relying on an integrity of materials, structure and an inherent sensitivity to nature. Bad buildings often lead to intellectual and emotional silence. In contrast, architecture encourages discussion, imagination and wonder. Meeting the commonplace requirements is not enough. Architects do more. Design matters and desire is essential for a building team to be clearly aligned and soar beyond convention. I have heard many people, including friends, express a desire to have a home representative of their values and individualism. They are often quite passionate and have incredible ideas for bringing their vision to life. However, they assume they can't afford it. I will ask, what is the basis of this assumption? Frequently, the answer is an impression only rich people hire architects. Certainly, wealthy home buyers have the resources to hire us. However, many, if not most, will bypass a good architect and, taking the advice of a realtor, go directly to a builder… not unlike lower-income buyers. The results: an assemblage of mediocrity and conformity distinguished only by scale. Sound harsh? It is. I would like to believe it is not my nature to be negative especially when I’m writing about my favorite subject. But, do I have your attention? The longer I practice, and the more I teach, I realize good architects are a building project’s best investment. Why use an architect? Would you enjoy an inspired environment that changes with earth's orbit? In addition, houses are expensive. Considering the number of dollars, could your personal investment benefit from having an experienced advocate? Would you like to have an ally, committed to more than simple profit, independent of all the other required entities standing to profit? More than once, I have informed potential home buyers their most appropriate design (some say style) has not yet been built. It is the family’s originality of lifestyle combined with budget, and their site’s determinants of solar orientation, views, access, privacy, topography and size that creates the architectural idea. Could your home investment be based on a clear IDEA larger than you? What are your priorities? Architects are a community asset. We are in a unique position to influence public policy, shape history and promote health, safety, and magic. We want to make a better world through architecture. That makes us pretty cool.

I’m often asked what an architect does. It’s a mystery for sure. The obvious thing we do is create complex drawings with special tools and big pieces of paper, but before all that, before all the sketches and plans... a good architect listens. Yes, being an architect is about hearing a person’s goals and desires. But, most of the time that’s not enough. It’s not enough just to listen. I’ve found that being an architect, an exceptional architect, is about asking the right questions. Questions that release a person’s hidden dreams and secret desires, questions that lead to personal and unique expressions, whatever they may be. I care about your vision, your dream, and your goals. I listen as much for what’s not being said as what is. My team and I would be proud to help you experience that miraculous feeling of living in the home of your dreams.

28150 N. Alma School Pkwy Suite 103-423 Scottsdale, Arizona 85262 mark@severgroup.com www.severgroup.com 480.596.0040 I create truly one-of-a-kind, site specific designs and have been doing so for 26 years. Designing and building custom homes requires a very personal and dedicated connection to the client and their wishes. Every architect in the ARA understands this connection and excels in achieving signature design and thus, real value for their clients. I have been fortunate enough to participate in the roles of client, architect, designer and builder over the years having built several homes for myself. I understand the process from each perspective which gives me insight to address any unique requirement. I utilize progressive technologies which allow me to present, convey and interact with a client or team member regardless of location. Designing and building a custom home is the ultimate reward and reflection on a lifetime of success. I understand the importance of conveying the correct statement my clients wish to make about their new home. I enjoy working with great clients wanting to create a great piece of architecture regardless of scale.

The Union of Dwelling and Land Clint Miller’s childhood home was nestled in the hills of Southern California, where large expanses of living room windows framed landscaping, where honest, load-bearing wood beams both supported the home’s structure and adorned its interior. As a youngster, Clint felt a kinship with these simple structures and their textures and proportions, and to the views that revealed the surrounding environment. These early experiences helped shape Clint’s architectural quest to understand the intricate balance required to create a home that forges a natural relationship of dwelling and environment. For more than three decades, architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site, whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding desert. Miller’s body of work balances delicate detail and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design; each home respects and embraces its site. Clint’s residential projects have been featured in AIA Home Tours, honored in an AIA Homes of the Year competition, and recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit. In March of 2010 he was honored as a Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden magazine and has been featured several times on that publication’s cover.

Kendle Design Collaborative designs homes that speak to your heart and soul, homes that are inspired by the natural beauty of the land that you call home, be it forest, waterfront, prairie or desert. We strive to design homes where a unique visual delight may be found around every corner and in every detail, often changing with the passing of the sun or the changing of the seasons. This we believe is living architecture, an ever-changing natural tapestry that celebrates the many joys of living. As an architect, I feel my primary responsibility is to clearly understand my client’s priorities, their values, and aspirations, but most importantly to understand what brings them joy. Then and only then can I carefully craft the design and details of their new home such that it enhances their daily living, bringing them joy in their quietest moments as well as times of celebration. I hope that you will consider us for your next home design. We would be honored to work with you, where together we can design a home that brings you joy.

“Let us turn the map until we see clearly: the border is what joins us, not what separates us.”
– Alberto Rios, excerpt from Border Lines (2003)
Mexico! Simple contrasts, undulating dunes, level sea. The blue daytime horizon waits for another colored sunset. Fuzzy saltbush against the straight edge parapet rhymes with the ragged steel rebar sculpture, honoring the local nest building of the coastal Ospre bird. The weightless sand piles easily against the heavy white walls. Thick arches make a deep, protective, curved shadow, defending against the searing Mexican sunlight. The fascinating Sea of Cortez never stops moving, the beach is never the same. One is acutely aware of continuous change. The architecture tries desperately to remain static... and happily fails. Although Architecture is a technical discipline, to him, it is still an art form on a human scale. Licensed in several states, with over 35 years of experience, he strives to create design work as both sculpture and a functional living environment. Every commission is unique and must meet certain criteria to satisfy a client. The process of design involves effective communication and being a good listener. "Understanding and meeting our clients' needs is probably the single most important factor in achieving success with a project. Architectural design is a very personal process ... from concept to completion." While many Architects' design work occurs within a fairly narrow design range, Hann prefers to be known for his creative solutions involving a fairly wide range of design styles. His strength is in the diversity of his work and his ability to interpret his clients' needs without stylistic parameters. James Hann Design, AIA is "Art as Architecture where the greatest satisfaction is realizing his clients' dreams."

From concept to reality, Dale takes the vision each client has for their home and makes it a reality. Valley Legacy Architects Frederick Penn Weaver, FAIA: Weaver & Drover Remembered By Frank Aazami and David M. Brown A perfectionist draughtsman, an artist, a loving husband and a good father Frederick
‘Fred’
Weaver,
FAIA,
founder of the distinguished Phoenix architectural firm, Weaver & Drover, was so honored in 2002 by Herman P.
1
Jacobi, an associate in the firm,
1950–1991, its lead designer and a Weaver family friend. The successor company, DWL Architects + Planners Inc., is celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2019. “Meticulous,

and
Superintendent on any job, fair-minded, above all a great speaker,” explained Jacobi, as reported by James Abell, FAIA, in research for the AIA Arizona College of Fellows. An Illinois native and World War II Navy veteran, Richard ‘Dick’ E. Drover, AIA, met Weaver in Phoenix at E.L. Varney and Associates Architects in 1948. He left in March 1950 to join Weaver in the new firm. He retired from the firm in 1978 and died in March 2002. The nattily bow-tied Drover, Abell notes, based on Jacobi’s memories, was the free spirit, designer and planner to Weaver’s acute administrator. They were, Jacobi noted, a “perfect match in 1950, based on mutual respect, honesty and fairness, and architectural know-how. “To bring a complicated job in front of clients, we sometimes needed Fred to explain and talk about it, although he might not have known all the details. He would have been able to talk about the making of matchsticks for an hour without knowing all the details about it,” added Jacobi, who died in 2010.
2
Weaver & Drover, later Drover, Welch & Lindlan and today DWL Architects + Planners, designed significant Arizona buildings: Phoenix Sky Harbor International Terminals 2, 3 and 4 (1962– and with Lescher & Mahoney Architects, 1979 and 1990); Arizona State’s Charles Trumbull Library and Pedestrian Mall (1966); dozens of schools throughout Arizona; churches; civic buildings; and memorable Valley National Bank branches, the most famous of which, at 44th Street and Camelback Road (1968) in Phoenix, is a Chase branch today.

Frederick Penn Weaver, FAIA (cont.) Fred Weaver and his partner Dick Drover helped to establish ”standards for architectural excellence that help guide today’s practicing architects and inspire tomorrow’s,” says Frank Aazami, principal of the Private Client Group for Russ Lyon | Sotheby’s International Realty in Scottsdale, one of the Valley’s premier luxury real estate firms. “He has left all of us in the Valley richer for his commercial and residential designs as well as for his longstanding and broad civic participation in the community he loved.” Born into Building Weaver was born on August 30, 1912, in Carlsbad, New Mexico, where his father, Frederick Penn Weaver, was a construction

foreman and water master for the U.S. Reclamation Service. His mother was Juanita (Hakes) Weaver; her family had moved to the then Territory of New Mexico from Fitchville, Ohio, when she was a child. When the Weavers moved to Phoenix in 1921, Weaver remained in water management with the Salt River Water Users Association as a “zanjero,” a ditch rider, and water master. His son, Fred, revealed an early flair for drawing and watercolor paintings at Balsz Elementary School and Phoenix Union High School, where he me met Lois Ann Maffeo, a future schoolteacher and his wife; her family had moved to Globe, Arizona, about 1875. Multi-talented, he was on the debate team and played cornet in the high school band, graduating in 1930. At Phoenix College, he studied engineering and liberal arts, while participating in its band, boxing team and theater club, finishing his studies in 1932. He completed his Bachelor of Architecture degree at the University of Southern California in 1936. Fred and Lois were married in Long Beach, California, December 31, 1936. After working as a draftsman there for a year, he returned to the dry climate of Phoenix to soothe an arthritic lower spine. Here he worked for V.O. Wallingford, one of Arizona’s earliest licensed architects. He then joined the firm of Charles J. Gilmore Architect in 1938, later Gilmore, Scott, Varney and Yost, and finally, after Gilmore’s death in 1946, E.L. Varney and Associates Architects. During this time, he became an associate in the firm and passed his licensing exams in 1940.

During World War II, his health prevented active service, but he worked at a Goodyear defense plant in the early 1940s, taking the long bus ride daily from his home in Phoenix. In August 1949, Weaver opened his firm at 1010 North 24th Place in Phoenix. The family lived in the home, including the five children, Margaret, Charlene, Kathleen, Fred III and Virginia. At the back of the property, he established a separate office, which is still
“When generations yet unborn shall gather to worship their Creator, they shall always know that one of His creatures planned here a temple that spoke of Him clearly and beautifully...” - Rev. Monsignor Robert J. Donahue standing. Later, the firm moved to 128 East Camelback Road, then on the far north end of the city. Among its first projects were an elementary school expansion in Phoenix and St. Agnes Church. Weaver died May 30, 1968, at Good Samaritan Hospital, age 55. The church bulletin of St. Agnes noted on June 9, as written by Rt. Rev. Monsignor Robert J. Donohoe: “This parish shall ever be in his debt, and when generations yet unborn shall gather to worship their Creator, they shall always know that one of His creatures planned here a temple that spoke of Him clearly and beautifully...” His work is remembered. “Fred Weaver’s uncompromising attention to detail, willingness to explore using new things in new ways, and his acute business sense continue to influence DWL’s culture and our 70 years of enduring success,” says Mark R. Dee, AIA, LEEP AP, executive vice president for DWL Architects + Planners. Architectural Excellence among other Excellences In April 15, 1948, Weaver was granted membership in the American Institute of Architects, Arizona Chapter. Another distinguished Phoenix architect, Fred M. Guirey, nominated him; it was Guirey who introduced Jacobi, a Frankfort, Germany, émigré, to Weaver in 1949. The application notes that Weaver had already contributed to the Valley in church, medical and secondary school designs. In part, this says: “He has shown understanding and given strength to the use of modular concrete structures expressed in the bold and simple structural system and their flexibility and economy through the knowledge of his subject.”
ARA18 173
Frederick Penn Weaver, FAIA (cont.) And, “His understanding and belief in strong and well-drafted contract documents and administration of the work has been an incentive to the younger professionals in the area and has greatly contributed to the general upgrading of the construction industries in the area, as well as a more appreciative understanding of our profession.” This was followed in 1964 by the conferring of the distinguished fellowship status, FAIA. Much of his and the firm’s work exemplifies Mid-century Modernism, which continues to influence Valley architecture for its simplicity, clean timeless lines and welcoming approach to the desert.
9
“The examples of Weaver & Drover branch banks in this study pay close attention to the desert environment by providing various methods of shade for the windows and entrances to the buildings,” wrote Phoenix-based architectural historian Donna Reiner in Follow the Money: Identifying the Custom Architecturally Designed Branch Bank, her master’s thesis in Historic Preservation at Goucher College, 2009. The firm was sensitive to new architectural influences, while not slavish. The International-style Arizona Title Building was the first high-rise in Phoenix, and the sinuous lines of the magnificent Chapel at the Arizona State Hospital (1963), also in Phoenix, recall Le Corbusier’s Chapelle of Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp, France. Weaver & Drover were innovators, too. The award-winning ASU

Hayden Library was designed by Jacobi so that College Avenue closed adjacent to it, replaced by a pedestrian-centric mall –– presaging contemporary city development and redevelopment paradigms and private-side shopping complexes. Perhaps most memorable are the Mid-century Modern Valley National Bank branches, in particular, the elegant, elongated Highland Avenue and Scottsdale Road building (1967), now a retail center which does not celebrate the original vision, and the 44th Street and Camelback Road building –– “a Jewel-like project,” and “an architectural oasis,” Jacobi described it. Also in Tempe, when the Apache branch from 1962 was demolished in 2006 for Barrett, the Honors College at ASU, the futurist Buckminster Fuller-style geodesic ‘Golden Dome’ was stored; it’s now an outdoor shade structure/event ramada at the university’s Vista Del Sol student housing.

“The work of Weaver and Drover connects our Valley to the optimistic and visually interesting Mid-Century era of solid, yet connected growth and beyond,” - Scott Jarson
“The work of Weaver and Drover connect our Valley to the optimistic and visually interesting Mid-Century era of solid, yet connected growth and beyond,” says Scott Jarson, director of Sales + Creative Development for azarchitecture/Jarson & Jarson, the noted Phoenix-based real estate company specializing in the

sale of architecturally significant homes. “They should be cherished as such. “These buildings should also serve as economic reminders to the architects and developers of today that good design can endure and, frankly, even sell. My own mother chose to bank at the Valley National Bank at Camelback and 44th Street, simply because of the unique beauty of the structure. But their legacy is broader than even that; thousands of people interact with Weaver & Drover structures today and probably don’t know it.” Although the Weaver & Drover architectural legacy is mostly nonresidential, the home he built in 1951 for his family at 712 West Vernon Street in the Encanto Vista Historic District is superlative ––

one of Jarson’s favorites. The four-bedroom 2,394-square-foot “Encantohaus” was later remodeled by owner Frank Austin, a devotee of Mid-century Modern. The Weavers moved in in July of that year. The details include large-framed windows, organic materials such as wood, red brick and stone. “When designing a building, we start with the function and expand our ideas from there . . . ‘form follows function’. . . . Weaver designed this home, post-war, when designs were focused on the American family –– marrying functional spaces with high-design elements derived from Bauhaus and International styles, creating what we know as midcentury
8
modern,” said Sean Warfield, a designer at DWL Architects + Planners.

The Weaver home and others built in the post-War Mid-century Modern style, by other noted Valley exponents such as Beadle and Haver, command premium resale prices and help once-struggling inner-city neighborhoods gentrify. This one recently sold for more than $700,000. “Weaver & Drover are known to have delivered well-designed commercial,
institutional
and

throughout the Phoenix area and done with a confident, sophisticated and elegant touch,” says Doug Sydnor, FAIA, whose father Reginald ‘Reg’ Sydnor, FAIA, was also a distinguished member of this pioneering generation of Valley architects. “Their body of work also speaks to addressing the professional
9
responsibilities of creating a crafted, buildable, efficient and cost-effective built result.” Sydnor notes that in the late 1970s, Varney Sexton Sydnor Architects and Drover Welch & Lindlan teamed under “Associated Samaritan Architects” and worked with Bertram Goldberg of Chicago on the Good Samaritan Hospital Major Addition in Phoenix, and his firm, DSAA also teamed with DWL on the 2009 Scottsdale Appaloosa Branch Library. Community and civic service were as important to Weaver as good architecture. He was, among many positions, a member of the advisory board to the City of Phoenix Building Code; cochairman of the Legislative Committee to the Arizona State University; and a Phoenix Planning

and Zoning Commission member, serving as its vice chairman in 1959. In other voluntary roles, he was a member and president of the Dons Club; a sustaining member of the Boy Scouts of America; and a member of the Phoenix Development Association, again, among many others. Weaver & Drover was also committed to educational excellence and sponsored a travel prize for the top fourth-year ASU Architecture student to study architecture in Europe for the summer, Abell notes. The firm employed many outstanding associates, such as Frank Henry, an ASU architectural graduate who studied under Charles Montooth and Fred Langhorst, Paul Winslow, FAIA, and George Christensen, FAIA. In turn, mentors such as Christensen have passed 9
on Weaver’s legacy to today’s Valley architects such as Mark Candelaria, AIA, whose Scottsdale firm has become celebrated through the U.S. for its residential designs. “How highly regarded he was by both business and civic leaders!” recalls daughter Charlene Joehnk, now living in Prescott. “Not only was he a visionary and widely respected architect, he was also highly sought after for his views on city planning and development. Aside from his professional and public service, he was also a great father who instilled strong moral values in each of his five children, along with a deep-rooted appreciation of advanced

education. Equally important, he always found the time to spend with his family and be involved in their activities.”

”Daddy would be amazed to think he was held in such high regard,” says her sister, Margaret ‘Margie’ Barlow, a Flagstaff resident. “We were blessed in ways we never imagined when we were growing up. How fortunate we were, and are.”

Community and civic service were as important to Weaver as good architecture.

Ron Brissette was an English Literature major at the University of Connecticut who spent most of his time in the scene shop at the school theater. After college he spent a few years in the professional theater as a technical director, scene and lighting designer.
It was a great
experience where a passion for design and technical excellence were born, but there had to be something else of permanence where culture, function, and physical environment could come together in an artful way. It had to be Architecture. At 27 he entered the Frank Lloyd Wright School. There he met Jeff, who later after some 15 years of separate career paths, would become his partner.
