Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect

1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.

2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.

3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.

4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.

5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.

6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.

7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.

8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.

9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.

10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

Perspectives

By Eddie Jones AIA Why architects? Why architecture? Sometimes, I step back and remember, not everyone knows an architect. Most don't understand what the professional title fully implies. However, I’m pretty sure, in general, people think architects are smart and cool. I do. Apparently, so does my wife! But I’m not interested in individual architects. I am interested in their collective impact on individual communities and the world. Building is very powerful, for good or for bad. But architecture—in my mind—is typically good. However, there are too many bad buildings. How can you tell? The outside kills the street and the inside disrespects its occupants. The space within and in-between is oppressive and dull. The exterior imposes itself on the landscape, ignores environmental responsibility and, well, just takes up space. At best, a bad building is benign, nondescript and forgettable. At worst, a bad building can

inflict damage; physical and intellectual damage. Let me be clear, most buildings are not examples of architecture. There are few structures qualified to be called architecture and the ratio gets more and more unbalanced with each passing year. The bad has consistently outweighed the good and this isn’t a new trend. Despite this history of architecture being outpaced by bad buildings, the influence of great architecture is undeniable. There are moments when we know our life has been enriched by the experience of a great building. It is not uncommon to feel an emotional response to a historic cathedral, a thoughtfully designed home or a new public art museum. Most cities will showcase their most admired cultural buildings regardless of an architectural era. Frank Lloyd Wright said,“The mother art is architecture. Without an architecture of our own we have no soul of our own civilization.” My favorite definition of architecture was made by the great 20th Century architect Louis Kahn, “Buildings shelter mankind. Architecture shelters the spirit of mankind.” I still believe most architects aspire to achieve architecture. At least they start out that way. A typical architect’s story begins before high school which, by definition, makes it a “calling” more than a profession. For me, I was six years old when I decided my life’s direction. Make it to college and we endure a five to six year education, broad ranging as it is exhausting. Additionally, each state requires those holding an architectural degree to apprentice in an actual practice for a predetermined number of years, usually two to three. Following internship, we take the state registration exams, equivalent to the bar exam for lawyers. Some years, only 1/3 of the students will pass the test. The test is grueling. A passing grade allows the once young aspirant to finally call themselves an architect. Their average age is 32. The educational gauntlet requires endurance, conviction, and commitment. Those who become architects do so because they are in love. They are inspired to make a better world. We remain forever youthful because each new day is an exercise in the complexity of engineering coupled with the self-fulfillment of creativity. Problem solving is our job. Most of the time—not all the time—but most of the time, solving those problems is a wonderful good time. I enjoy telling students I have not worked since I graduated from college. That said, the commitment to genuinely honor a lifetime of passion requires the highest level of perseverance. Another esteemed architect, Glenn Murcutt, warns young architects “you want to end your practice the same way you started it,” referring to initial high 2ethical standards and the relentless quest for design excellence. In my opinion, the manifestation of an architect’s measure can be discerned more obviously in2 residential design than in commercial/industrial design. The house is an architect’s playground and

design lab. Expertise is honed, theories articulated and the consequences of one’s imposed design decisions are quickly felt. Our clients’ limited budgets—they are ALWAYS limited—have to be taken seriously. It is this monetary respect and the highest of self-imposed standards which motivates us to pursue the most elusive and therefore, most valuable of all design skills… restraint. I have spent forty five

years learning restraint. What to leave; what to leave out; when to insist; when to let go. These lessons are the result of longevity, experience and maturity. You may find this surprising but I think being an old architect is a lot more fun than being a new architect. The accumulation of experience can, in itself, create opportunities to practice beyond one’s local community. Of course, any opportunity close to home allows the reexamination of familiar criteria and new interpretation. Home is the ultimate comfort zone, sufficient to inspire but also reason enough to leave. It's not easy. One only has to understand the climactic differences between, say, Arizona and Oregon. The range of knowledge necessary to excel in different climate zones is hard earned and requires patience. Factoring in local history, culture, density, demographics, ethnicity and topography further complicates the challenge of designing in a wide variety of environments. But these factors are essential to make elevated design decisions. Each community, each client, each site deserves a specific architectural response. Those responses are as varied as the weather. We should expect architects to invent an architecture appropriate for each situation, relying on an integrity of materials, structure and an inherent sensitivity to nature. Bad buildings often lead to intellectual and emotional silence. In contrast, architecture encourages discussion, imagination and wonder. Meeting the commonplace requirements is not enough. Architects do more. Design matters and desire is essential for a building team to be clearly aligned and soar beyond convention. I have heard many people, including friends, express a desire to have a home representative of their values and individualism. They are often quite passionate and have incredible ideas for bringing their vision to life. However, they assume they can't afford it. I will ask, what is the basis of this assumption? Frequently, the answer is an impression only rich people hire architects. Certainly, wealthy home buyers have the resources to hire us. However, many, if not most, will bypass a good architect and, taking the advice of a realtor, go directly to a builder… not unlike lower-income buyers. The results: an assemblage of mediocrity and conformity distinguished only by scale. Sound harsh? It is. I would like to believe it is not my nature to be negative especially when I’m writing about my favorite subject. But, do I have your attention? The longer I practice, and the more I teach, I realize good architects are a building project’s best investment. Why use an architect? Would you enjoy an inspired environment that changes with earth's orbit? In addition, houses are expensive. Considering the number of dollars, could your personal investment benefit from having an experienced advocate? Would you like to have an ally, committed to more than simple profit, independent of all the other required entities standing to profit? More than once, I have informed potential home buyers their most appropriate design (some say style) has not yet been built. It is the family’s originality of lifestyle combined with budget, and their site’s determinants of solar orientation, views, access, privacy, topography and size that creates the architectural idea. Could your home investment be based on a clear IDEA larger than you? What are your priorities? Architects are a community asset. We are in a unique position to influence public policy, shape history and promote health, safety, and magic. We want to make a better world through architecture. That makes us pretty cool.

I’m often asked what an architect does. It’s a mystery for sure. The obvious thing we do is create complex drawings with special tools and big pieces of paper, but before all that, before all the sketches and plans... a good architect listens. Yes, being an architect is about hearing a person’s goals and desires. But, most of the time that’s not enough. It’s not enough just to listen. I’ve found that being an architect, an exceptional architect, is about asking the right questions. Questions that release a person’s hidden dreams and secret desires, questions that lead to personal and unique expressions, whatever they may be. I care about your vision, your dream, and your goals. I listen as much for what’s not being said as what is. My team and I would be proud to help you experience that miraculous feeling of living in the home of your dreams.

The Union of Dwelling and Land Clint Miller’s childhood home was nestled in the hills of Southern California, where large expanses of living room windows framed landscaping, where honest, load-bearing wood beams both supported the home’s structure and adorned its interior. As a youngster, Clint felt a kinship with these simple structures and their textures and proportions, and to the views that revealed the surrounding environment. These early experiences helped shape Clint’s architectural quest to understand the intricate balance required to create a home that forges a natural relationship of dwelling and environment. For more than three decades, architect Clint Miller has striven to design homes that form a union with their site, whether integrating into lush urban communities or growing organically from the surrounding desert. Miller’s body of work balances delicate detail and bold composition, melding traditional techniques and materials with sensitive design and application. Each home expresses an organic relationship between site and design; each home respects and embraces its site. Clint’s residential projects have been featured in AIA Home Tours, honored in an AIA Homes of the Year competition, and recognized in an AIA Historical Preservation Exhibit. In March of 2010 he was honored as a Master of the Southwest by Phoenix Home and Garden magazine and has been featured several times on that publication’s cover.

The desert is a palette of extreme contrasts; the sharp spines of a cactus protecting its delicate the comfort of shade and beauty created by the mesquite tree that stands before it – these are our inspiration to create timeless homes that celebrate nature and the unique lifestyles of our clients. As an architect, I feel my primary responsibility is to clearly understand my client’s priorities, values, and aspirations, but most importantly to understand what brings them joy. Then and only then can I carefully craft the design and details of their new home such that it enhances their daily living, bringing them joy in their quietest moments as well as times of celebration. I hope that you will consider us for your next home design. We would be honored to work with you, where together we can design a home that brings you joy.

Valley Legacy Architects Blaine Drake: Master of the Desert “[H]e left a legacy of excellence which inspired a new generation of designers.” –Reed Kroloff, in Blaine Drake, 40 Years of Architecture in Arizona

By Frank Aazami and David M. Brown Blaine Drake (1911–1993) heard a lecture by Frank Lloyd Wight when he was attending Cal Berkeley; that revelatory experience sent him to his home and school, Taliesin, in Wisconsin, and then on to a distinguished career as a Phoenix architect. Working in the tradition of Wright and Mid-Century Modernism, he designed and built 140-plus custom homes, most in the Valley. He also produced office buildings, medical facilities, apartment buildings and churches, including the fine 1960 Phoenix Unitarian Church on Lincoln Drive in Paradise Valley. “Drake was a pioneer in energy-efficient design in the desert. He carefully considered sun angles in his designs to maximize energy efficiency,” says Harold Housley, archives specialist at Arizona State

1

University, where the Blaine Drake files are kept. “His architecture was keenly aware of local materials, skilled trades and resources; and he integrated them such as cast-in-place concrete and concrete masonry units,” adds Doug Sydnor, FAIA, principal of Scottsdale-based Douglas Sydnor Architect + Associates. He notes that his father, Reginald G. Sydnor, AIA, was a contemporary architect, working from the 1950s to 1970s, and no doubt knew of Drake’s work. And, “Blaine Drake took the best of Wright’s principles and showed how to deploy them on a larger, more economical scale,” explains Alison King, founder of Modern Phoenix (modernphoenix.net), which celebrates the legacy of the architects working in the Phoenix area

after World War II until 1975. In particular, “By wholeheartedly embracing locally-produced materials like CMU he was able to balance the block’s practical qualities with aesthetic impact, bypassing the fussy ornament and complexity that Wright often detailed.” Getting it Wright and Making it Drake Born in Ogden, Utah, September 10, 1911, Drake attended Ogden High School. “In 1929, he drove from Ogden across Nevada over then dirt, corduroy highway to the University of California where he enrolled as an architecture major,” says his son Peter, who lives in a Blaine Drake-designed home in Phoenix. Peter’s brother, Eric, is in 2

“Blaine Drake took the best of Wright’s principles and showed how to deploy them on a larger, more economical scale” - Alison King The elder Drake became one of Wright’s original apprentices at Taliesin, Wisconsin, in December 1933, according to the Blaine Drake archive at ASU. “He was assigned extensive kitchen duty to help pay for his tuition and also became Wright’s chauffer,” Peter says. In this way, he saw many Wright buildings under construction. One of these was Fallingwater. He continued his apprenticeship with Wright at Taliesin West in what is now Scottsdale; here he met his future wife, Hulda Brierly, who joined the Taliesin Fellowship in Wisconsin in January 1935. During the winter, Wright and his apprentices were building the now National Historic Landmark in the desert of what is now Scottsdale. Hulda’s sister, Cornelia, was also an FLW apprentice. Hulda and Drake married the following year at Taliesin East in Spring Green, Wisconsin. The living quarters they designed and built at Taliesin West are still there but have been since modified, Peter notes. In 1940, the couple moved to Hillsboro, California, where Drake supervised the construction of the Bazett House –– one of Wright’s Usonian designs. Wright planned that these would be models for homes of everyday Americans, and Drake derived many of his architectural preferences from this experience such as a flat roof with overhangs to protect windows from the sun. However, for better sun protection in the desert, Drake preferred blocks rather than wood, as selected by Wright. “Drake did learn a great deal about custom residential design from the Master, including the order, geometries and systems found in nature or as Wright described as an ‘organic’ approach to design,” 4

says Sydnor, noting that Drake was also an advocate of energy-efficient design in the desert, long before its vogue. “Drake managed to take such strong influences, reinterpret them in a new way and make them as his own,” notes King. In 1941, the couple moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he worked for an engineering company before returning to Arizona in 1943, when Drake accepted a wartime job with Goodyear Aircraft in the West Valley.

with his brother Frank, on the construction of some of the residences designed by my father,” recalls Peter of the standout Arizona architect. “My father often visited each of his buildings twice a day while they were under construction,” he notes, adding that his father pioneered design/build

Cleanly Drawn & Uncluttered “Not everyone is familiar with Blaine Drake’s legacy, but his work is outstanding throughout his career and he deserves much more recognition. His designs are timeless and have great street presence and strong market value,” says Frank Aazami, principal of The Private Client Group, Russ Lyon | Sotheby’s Realty in Scottsdale. “Learning from his teacher, Wright, he was a pioneer in Phoenix of sensitively connecting with the surrounding desert –– long before many even considered this in their designs.” One of Drake’s early homes was in 1948 for Fred Eldean, who commuted between New York City and Phoenix. In what is now the town of Paradise Valley, the home was featured in Practical Houses for Contemporary Living, a 1953 book by Jean and Don Graf, Housley says. Eldean reveals a number of Drake’s signature approaches. In the chapter “A New York Executive Takes to the Sun,” the Grafs note that the house supports informal living and easy maintenance, and the native pumice block for the exterior and interior walls reflected heat, Housley explains. “His design ensured that the winter sun hit the glass on the south elevation of the house for maximum heating, while in the summer the sun was overhead and the glass was shaded,” he adds. 10

Drake also advocated preserving existing landscapes and vegetation, he adds. The following year, the Kumler home on Stanford Drive in now Paradise Valley became the winter home for Marjorie Kumler. Katherine Morrow Ford and Thomas Creighton featured it in their 1951 book, The American House Today.

Blaine Drake (cont.) “They noted Drake’s innovative use of cement block walls with natural finish, the low cost of construction ($4,700) and the undisturbed desert views on a site that was, at the time, eight miles outside of Phoenix,” Housley notes. In 1951 there were two significant homes, the often-photographed Connor on Palo Cristi in now Paradise Valley and the Dr. John F. Glass dental office, 3852 North 15th Avenue and the adjoining Glass home, 1501 West Fairmont Street, Phoenix. The home/office appears in Midcentury Marvels: Commercial Architecture of Phoenix, 1945–1975, published by the Phoenix Historic Preservation office. Housley believes it “shows an influence of Wright’s Usonian

8

buildings, featuring an open living area, built-in furnishings, use of local materials, low roof line and consideration of light, shade and sun angles.” The live/work building for Dr. Glass is Wright inspired, with its horizontal

composition,

grey

masonry

components,

thin

cantilevered shade canopies steel windows and metal fascia. And, Sydnor says, “to acknowledge the corner site, he does some rotating of the building forms on an angle.” Drake’s son, Peter, lives in the family home in the Bartlett Estates, 5210 N. 22nd Street, Phoenix. Built in 1954, “It’s a masterwork of curves and complementary spaces — and one of the few homes left that feature curves like the Scoville house did,” says King. Sadly, that 1958 Biltmore area home for Phoenix attorney Harold and wife Wilma Scoville was demolished September 9, 2008.

9

Peter, who discussed his father’s work at the annual Arizona Historic Preservation Conference in Prescott in June of 2019, expects that the ongoing restoration of the home will take about a year. When completed, he will be applying for inclusion of this house on the National Register of Historic Places. None of Drake’s buildings are on that list nor on the Phoenix Historic Property Register. So, in essence, not one of the Drake homes is historically protected. King notes that photographer Julius Shulman’s photographs of the Drakes in the home became a “gateway of appreciation for desert modernism in the popular print media. This style of casually art-directed lifestyle photos of people in places shaped the look and feel of magazines like Dwell, which revived the genre in the early 2000s.” From the same year, the Dr. French Residence, 411 East Missouri Avenue, Phoenix, is “deceptively simple from the streetside,” King

says. “It then expands into much more complex and oblique

volumes inside.” Sydnor and others believe the 1955 Washburn home, 3647 E. Stanford Drive East Stanford Drive, Paradise Valley, is particularly resonant, featuring Drake’s signature post and beam construction and a circular swimming pool that “complements the floor plan with its rotated and angular geometries,” he says. “The residence has a character that is elegant, refined and sophisticated and probably because its comfortable scale and sensibilities appear to have been influenced by a Japanese architecture.” Simple building components such as exterior wall panels, fascia and cantilevered canopies have “crisp reveals and details” that suggest how the home was assembled. And, “the interior demonstrates a confident touch with the natural woods millwork and other crafted details,” explains Sydnor. King notes that the home is “doubly blessed”: Al Beadle, one of the Southwest’s exemplars of Mid-Century Modernism, completed a remodeling in 1966. “Given his astute design skills, I am quite sure it was done with great care,” says Sydnor. Three later homes are also widely respected: the 1956 Admiral Holcomb Residence, 5343 East Lincoln Drive, Paradise Valley, benefitted by a 2010 Jack Black, AIA, addition and renovation; the 1959 Beck Residence in Marion Estates, Phoenix; and the Manker Residence, 4530 East Pepper Tree Lane, Paradise Valley, built in 1964. Says King: “Manker has a cool graciousness to it, especially in the entry sequence which prepares guests to walk through the desert,

11

through architecture, then back out to drink in a view of the desert.” Blaine Drake’s work is characterized by an awareness of the demands of the desert. “With broad overhangs, covered outdoor patios and durable materials, Drake’s designs shelter against the intense desert heat and light, while his interiors, open and spacious, illuminated with desert light, with floor-to-ceiling windows providing access to the protected patios, create an indoor-outdoor living environment enjoyable throughout the year,” says Peter. “Drake was first of all an artist with the talent and knowledge to synthesize suitable building materials and demands of the climate into a work of highly livable, three-dimensional art,” he adds. “As a resident said of his houses, ‘They have a soul.’”

Although Architecture is a technical discipline, to him, it is still an art form on a human scale. Licensed in several states, with over 35 years of experience, he strives to create design work as both sculpture and a functional living environment. Every commission is unique and must meet certain criteria to satisfy a client. The process of design involves effective communication and being a good listener. "Understanding and meeting our clients' needs is probably the single most important factor in achieving success with a project. Architectural design is a very personal process ... from concept to completion." While many Architects' design work occurs within a fairly narrow design range, Hann prefers to be known for his creative solutions involving a fairly wide range of design styles. His strength is in the diversity of his work and his ability to interpret his clients' needs without stylistic parameters. James Hann Design, AIA is "Art as Architecture where the greatest satisfaction is realizing his clients' dreams."

DALE GARDON DESIGN Dale Gardon, AIA, LEED AP Principal

20885 N. 90th Place, Suite 100 Scottsdale, AZ 85255 dale@dalegardondesign.com www.dalegardondesign.com 480.948.9666 With over 25 years experience designing custom homes, Dale Gardon leads the residential design team and helps them create unique one-of-a kind residences for the diverse clientele the firm has had the privilege to work with. From concept to reality, Dale takes the vision each client has for their home and makes it a reality. Located directly off Market Street in DC Ranch, the award winning studio office looks more like a residence than a commercial building. Warm rich earth tones greet you at the door, and there is comfortable atmosphere that embraces you. Dale has designed homes ranging from 1,800 s.f to over 15,000 s.f. with budgets that span from $45 to over $1,200 p.s.f. Each custom residence is designed, crafted and personalized to the needs and desires of each client. Design distinction is what makes the difference in their homes, incorporating indoor/outdoor living environments, pool grottos, and other special features or spaces. They blend those unique characteristics into a cohesive design composition in the architectural style desired by the client. Careful consideration is given to the site and orientation of the home, integrating the site topography, solar orientation, and views to the best advantage to create the finest living experience. From traditional to contemporary styles, each residence design that is created by the firm embraces a sense of comfort, and has the uniquely individual design elements that make it truly a custom home.

Candelaria Design With more than 30 years of experience in custom residential architecture, both new build and renovations, as well as boutique commercial projects, Candelaria Design takes inspiring living to a whole new level. Through their creative ideas and thoughtful designs, Candelaria Design, and the man who started it all, Mark Candelaria, AIA, are truly an inspiration to clients and industry peers alike. Mark formed Candelaria Design Associates in 1999 with the belief that the architectural design process should be creative and fun, not tedious and uninspiring. Mark’s talent of sketching by hand and his expertise in spatial design earned him the prestigious title of Master of the Southwest in 2005 by Phoenix Home & Garden Magazine. He was also named as one of the top 125 architects in the Western United States by Western Interiors Magazine. Candelaria Design has been ranked as the No. 1 Residential Architecture Firm in Arizona repeatedly by Arizona Business Magazine. Some of the firm’s most prestigious honors include the Pacific Coast Builders Gold Nugget Award for custom homes over 6,500 square feet and the first LEED-certified home, The Zona Verde Home located in Paradise Valley, and the architect chosen to design the HGTV Smart Home located in Scottsdale in 2017.

Candelaria Team In the age of technology and rapid, impersonal communications, it is comforting to have the ability to instantly take an idea or concept from a client and manifest the notion with pen to paper. Candelaria’s hand-selected team of talented architects and project managers follow a careful and deliberate process in each custom luxury home or boutique commercial design. The firm’s philosophy is rooted in the initial human connection and enhanced with the latest technology that allows the team to produce designs that encompass a spirit and custom craftsmanship unlike any other offered today. Candelaria Lifestyle Candelaria Design has taken the notion of ‘inspiring living’ and expanded it to encompass annual self-guided European travel tours and custom luxury home furnishings designed with these world travels in mind. Currently, they offer tours of Italy and Spain. Both tours immerse guests in European ancient architecture, sweeping views of the land, culinary cooking classes, fine dining on local cuisine, antique shopping treasures and endless fun. Mark’s love of traveling, cooking and design has also inspired his own line of home accessories including a custom-designed Pasta Maker available in ‘race car red.’ For more information on Candelaria Design, we invite you to visit candelariadesign.com.
