Balcony balustrades date back to the 7th century and were once perceived as a valued symbol of craft and affluence. I have seen examples in every country and every culture I have traveled. Frequently appearing in Renaissance paintings and proudly punctuating some of history’s most important classical buildings, one would think this feminine form would have remained respected. Sadly, here in the southwest, the bulbous stem has been thoughtlessly overused and reduced to a cliché with predictable application. Rarely integral and always capped with a heavy top, it seems time has forgotten the curving, sensual shape might have further potential. Casa de las Balaustradas boldly accepts the cliche and elevates it as a cloister of balustrades aligned both horizontally, as expected, and vertically, not as expected. Additionally, the common railing is set free from its oppressive cap as it morphs from wall to protective edge. The new home’s interior boasts the largest self-supporting boveda brick vault yet built in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico and gracefully juxtaposes the arched curve over the level line between sea and sky.

TSONTAKISRCHITECTURE Nick Tsontakis was born at home in Kostadiana, a tiny village located off the northwest coast of Crete. He came into this world in a bedroom with corner windows overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. He grew up gazing at some of the most beautiful vistas on the planet. When his family moved to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, he marveled at the aesthetic magnificence of Old Montreal and the innovative structures and international pavilions of Expo ‘67. Living in Montreal, Nick graduated from McGill University School of Architecture with Distinction, and was the principal of Nick Tsontakis Architects from 1981 to 2001. He moved to Scottsdale and formed Tsontakis Architecture in 1996.
