Ten Reasons to Hire an Architect

1. An Architect can help you create and focus your dream house into a built reality. Architects see the big picture. A skilled architect can help you develop and integrate your list of requirements with the other complex factors to create a unique Arizona home just for you by prioritizing your needs.

2. An Architect is a licensed professional. Architects are educated, trained, and tested in a large range of areas, including aesthetic design, ergonomics, sociology, ecology, law, building codes, construction materials and technology. This breadth of knowledge allows foresight when evaluating competing requirements and restrictions.

3. An Architect will solve your problems with creative, elegant solutions. Architects are trained to make buildings both functional and beautiful. An architect will be able to show you alternatives that you might not have considered possible.

4. An Architect is trained in communication. An architect has experience effectively communicating through written word, drawing, and verbally with the key members of the project including clients, contractors, engineers, and authorities in the manner best suited to the situation.

5. An Architect has experience. Most architects consider architecture a passion more than a vocation. They draw on past experience. They are an integral part of the design/construction community with contacts in all the fields.

6. An Architect can make your life easier! Architects can bring pictorial suggestions to the table and assist in decisions for space planning, materials, and finishes transforming your abstract ideas into a form you can visualize.

7. An Architect is cost effective. A well-conceived, designed, and coordinated project is more economical. Changes made on paper in the design phase are much less expensive than those made during construction.

8. Architecture is a good investment. Great design sells from consumer products to cities. A well designed home has a higher resale value.

9. An Architect can make your building project environmentally friendly. Skilled architects work with the environment to create spaces that are sustainable and comply with ever demanding energy performance requirements.

10. An Architect can guide you through an entire project as your advocate. An architect will be able to assist with every aspect of a project from choosing a site, city permitting, design review board submittals to construction administration. Whether you choose to start a project from the ground up or remodel an existing space, an architect will be able to help the project run smoothly during each stage avoiding disruptive surprises.

ARA COMMUNITY

ARA

Arizona Residential Architects

INVITATION TO LAND OWNERS OR RESIDENTIAL DEVELOPERS The Arizona Residential Architects (ARA) is a distinguished organization of 15 leading residential architectural firms who would like to provide resources and design talent to land owners, real estate individuals or firms, builders, or residential developers for the purposes of creating a new community, neighborhood, or unique collection of homes. The ideal candidates would be seeking the assistance of the ARA as a creative design and/or development coordination partner to help facilitate new community or neighborhood planning ideas and initiatives. The ARA would bring the talents and experience of 15 uniquely diverse residential architectural firms to the project’s residential design opportunities. In addition, the ARA has developed a network of over 100 trade partners. This network includes residential builders, interior designers, residential product manufacturers or representatives, and trade service provision companies. All this knowledge, product resources and experience can be brought to benefit an identified project. The goal is to identify an opportunity where a parcel of land is between 2ac up to 15ac, or more, wherein the ARA Community Team can design a new inspiring residential neighborhood community that creates awareness and promotes new lifestyle and environmental initiatives incorporating best practices, including recognized platforms for sustainability, such as LEED, and/or Green building practices. The ideal opportunity would allow all 15 members of the ARA to design homes for this model community.

Contact Dale Gardon at (480) 948-9666 to make an appointment to meet with the ARA Community Design Team to discuss your potential opportunity.

HOA’s and Design Review By Ron Brissette RA, NCARB

Many, if not most, of the higher end custom homes built in the last 30 years have occurred in HOA governed communities that have design guidelines. For the most part these communities have promoted and adopted standards above and beyond the normal building department requirements to which they are subject.

Quality of life,

protection of property values, and context within some

“There should not be any more horror stories”

common theme has generally motivated these associations to put in place some form of additional regulation. Fellow homeowners act as a jury of peers to administer a set of design guidelines for those building in the community. Sometimes a design professional is retained by the HOA to help them with this task. The individual who is building a home or an addition may find dealing with such a process to be a positive or negative experience depending upon his/her expectations and understanding of the community. There are both success and horror stories from the perspective of the applicant and of those administering the guidelines. There should not be any more horror stories. A successful project is characterized by the realistic expectations administrators.

representing the applicant often makes the difference in knowing what to ask for and how to achieve desired results. For the community, having clear and evenly administered guidelines makes the difference.

Ron Brissette RA, NCARB is principal at Brissette Architects. He has been a practicing architect in Arizona for over 30 years. Ron Brissette is also an architect partner of ARA.

The best guidelines are those that are easy to understand with regard to the “do’s and don’ts” yet encourage creative solutions to accomplish an applicant’s goals and desires. Listening and working together moves projects along. Battles of will and inflexibility slow projects down. Whether a community has adopted a rule driven or a design driven process can also make a difference in tone and the end result. One of these approaches or some combination of them is embraced by any given HOA. It is for the applicant and his/her architect to know the community, and it is for the community to know itself to make the process work.

Wine Cellars Are as Cool as They Are Hot By Innovative Wine Cellars Say the words “wine cellar” to a dozen different people

refrigerator located conveniently in their kitchen island; and yet another may visualize a sleek, contemporary wine cellar located right in their dining room that serves the additional purpose of being an eye-catching piece of artwork. The great thing about wine cellars today is that they can be created to serve your exact needs, no matter how much room you have (or do not have, for that matter) to indulge your oenophile instincts. Those who have taken up the tasty hobby of collecting wine will tell you that you must “protect your investment.” Whether you are going to seek out rare reds or stockpile cases of your favorite Yellow Tail, you’ll want to know those precious bottles will be at their peak when you decide to pop the cork. The only way to have this kind of assurance is to store your selections with the proper balance of temperature and humidity; fail to do this and your corks could crack or rot, resulting in a tainted bouquet. The wine cellar has become a must-have amenity for new high end homes, much like the home theater and the gym, and some people also convert existing unused spaces in their homes into wine cellars. Not even the shaky economy and the uncertainty of the housing market have kept home owners from building wine cellars. In fact, the addition of a wine cellar to a home adds value and has become a selling feature for new and existing homes. Architects, home builders, and interior designers all agree that wine cellars are extensions of the idea that the home is not only a place to live, but also a place to entertain. The aesthetically pleasing and warm ambience of a wine cellar becomes a focal point in the home, a place where people congregate and enjoy conversation. One reason that wine cellars have become so prevalent is that, as more people drink fine wines, they are learning the value of letting some of them, particularly tannic reds,

ARA

Arizona Residential Architects

Storing wine properly is not just a good idea, it is a necessity. If you do notstore it properly, your wine will turn to vinegar. The technical aspects of a functional wine cellar boil down to a few basics: temperature, humidity, and proper construction. The optimal temperature range for wine storage is 55-62 degrees, for both red and white wines. While served at different temperatures, red and white wines must be stored at the same temperature. Some wines are made to age and some are meant to be enjoyed right away. The right storage protects them both. A properly constructed wine cellar will keep bottles away from heat, direct sunlight, vibration and oxidation. In addition to the technical side of storing wine, there are many aesthetic considerations you will need to ponder: What kind of racking system do you need - Mahogany wood for a Mediterranean feel or a suspended metal system for a floating, more contemporary feel? Perhaps your home is accented with old-world elements so you may want reclaimed wine barrel racking. Have a more eclectic hom? Consider a mixture of wood and metal racking for the home with a more eclectic décor. And the choice of the wine racking is just the beginning. Would you prefer an ornate iron and glass door or a stately carved wooden one? Will it be necessary to incorporate a ladder? How about material for the counter top, walls and floor? Do you want the lighting to make a statement, or blend into the background unnoticed? Perhaps you even have some stellar cellar art that you want to integrate. The material selections to complete your cellar are endless. The list is long, but these finishing touches complete the cellar and reflect each person’s unique tastes. Whether it is for maximum looks or maximum function, wine cellars add value to homes, provide a dwelling for one’s collection, and offer a place to gather with family and friends. Whatever the function for your wine cellar, one thing

GORDON ROGERS ARCHITECT INC AIA Gordon Rogers AIA Principal

4318 East Rancho Drive Phoenix, Arizona 85018 grogers@gordonrogers.com www.gordonrogers.com 602.952.9662 Gordon Rogers Architect INC AIA creates organic, contemporary residential architecture and his designs are extant in places as far flung as the isle of Trinidad, the deserts of Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico and the tall pine country of Utah and Michigan. A recipient of the Arizona American Institute of Architects Gold Medal for Design, Rogers has garnered many awards for his creations, including ten Arizona Home of the Year. In the west and southwest, lofty ceilings manifest the open feeling of space, wide expanses of glass capture sweeping vistas and broad overhangs shield living spaces from the harsh summer sun, all of which create an environment that embraces the terrain and outdoor lifestyle of the Sonoran Desert. In the tall pine country, spaces reflect the often wooded sites, frequently with skylights to bring light into interiors of this less than sunny region. Here, broad decks and screened porches reach out into the site to emphasize the indoor/outdoor feeling of space so prevalent in these houses. In the Caribbean, the doors are flung to the side and indoor/outdoor spaces become one. In all locations, sculptural spaces are constructed to meet each individual client's needs and wishes.

Sustainability, durability, livability and most of all enjoyment and delight are woven into every design. Desert Impluvian House By Matthew Rubo In Rome, roofs were channeled into a courtyard called an impluvian. Here, water was a focal point of the home watering plants or filling a fountain. This space also served to create breezes cooling their homes during summers. The Desert Impluvian House adopts this concept for the harsh Arizonan desert collecting as much water as possible. Nearby is a solar chimney which offers views into the impuvian whilst also housing the stairway. Proximity of these features connects the impluvian to the home’s passive systems while maintaining it as a focal point. Here watching water fall from a spout can become a spectacle during rare Arizona rains. Lee Hutchison, AIA - Matthew Rubo - Nicholas Tsontakis, Assoc. AIA

TRIOO House By Elizabeth Sydnor The “TRIOO House” is named after the two main concepts for the design. The first, “trio” meaning three, stands for the three main components of the home – resting, eating, and living. The second, “o” or outdoor, stands for the idea that outdoor space is just as important as the interior. The program of the home maximizes the specific interests of the family: the father a chef, the mother a musician, the son a baseball player, and the daughter a dancer. The parents’ work, children’s school, and extracurricular activities are located within a 5 minute drive and 7 minute bike ride. $3000 Prize Sponsor Phil Nichols - Elizabeth Sydnor

Cactus House By Lee Lamoreaux Drawing inspiration from the desert landscape is a natural solution to a sustainable lifestyle. Cacti have survived in arid regions for millions of years. One strategy uses ribbed spines, so when it does finally rain the cactus is able to expand in order to store enough water to survive the hot, dry months. Conceptually the Cactus House uses a similar strategy. During winter months it is able to open its’ doors and expand to take in the beautiful weather, utilizing exterior spaces, and reducing the need for artificial air circulation. During the hot summer months the house is able to seal itself up to preserve precious conditioned air, and reduce energy costs, in wait for cooler months.

Located just south of Camelback Mountain, this home was designed for a family of four, with sustainability practices in mind. It is 2,996 square feet, with 1,100 square feet of patio space and 25.2 percent lot coverage. It includes four bedrooms and three and a half bath's. The floor plan consists of an office space, a family room, private guest room, kids bedrooms, a kitchen, a master suite, and a full rain harvesting system to supplement the irrigation. Overall the main concept of the house is to blend the interior and exterior living spaces together, to allow for natural light, and to serve as its own water supplementation system.

The home consists of two rectangular wings joined by a sinuous great room. Livable exterior entry and patio spaces flow in-between the two wings bringing the outdoors into the home. Curved walls of glass further the connection with the outside, giving a clear line of sight through the entry into the rear yard. The great room expands into the south wing leaving the floor plan open and uncluttered. Thick perimeter walls constructed of straw bales are both structural and integrally insulated (R-30). This allows the home to stay warmer in the winter, and importantly, cooler in the summer.

9834 E. Kalil Drive Scottsdale, Arizona 85260 jameshann@jameshanndesign.com www.jameshanndesign.com 480.661.0517 James Hann is an artist. Although Architecture is a technical discipline, to him, it is still an art form on a human scale. Upon viewing his work, one would have to agree. Hann, an Architect licensed in several states, with over 30 years of experience, strives to create design work as both sculpture and a functional living environment. Every commission is unique and must meet certain criteria to satisfy a client. The process of design involves effective communication and being a good listener. "Understanding and meeting our clients' needs is probably the single most important factor in achieving success with a project. Architectural design is a very personal process ... from concept to completion." While many Architects' design work occurs within a fairly narrow design range, Hann prefers to be known for his creative solutions involving a fairly wide range of design styles. His strength is in the diversity of his work and his ability to interpret his clients' needs without stylistic parameters. James Hann Design, AIA is "Art as Architecture where the greatest satisfaction is realizing his clients' dreams."

480.948.9666 With over 25 years experience designing custom homes, Dale Gardon leads the residential design team and helps them create unique one-of-a kind residences for the diverse clientele the firm has had the privilege to work with. From concept to reality, Dale takes the vision each client has for their home and makes it a reality. Located directly off Market Street in DC Ranch, the award winning studio office looks more like a residence than a commercial building.

Warm rich earth tones greet you at the door, and there is comfortable

atmosphere that embraces you. Dale has designed homes ranging from 1,800 s.f to over 15,000 s.f. with budgets that span from $45 to over $1,200 p.s.f. Each custom residence is designed, crafted and personalized to the needs and desires of each client. Design distinction is what makes the difference in their homes, incorporating indoor/outdoor living environments, pool grottos, and other special features or spaces. They blend those unique characteristics into a cohesive design composition in the architectural style desired by the client. Careful consideration is given to the site and orientation of the home, integrating the site topography, solar orientation, and views to the best advantage to create the finest living experience. From traditional to contemporary styles, each residence design that is created by the firm embraces a sense of comfort, and has the uniquely individual design elements that make it truly a custom home.

The difference between creating a house they’ll want to come home to and one they’ll never want to leave.

The Electrolux ICON® series of appliances can help turn a house into a home, a kitchen into a living room. That’s because each appliance has been designed for optimal performance and aesthetic detail: racks move with the touch of a finger, cooking surfaces are unobtrusive and clean easily, touch panels disappear, and refrigerators and dishwashers work quietly. For more than 80 years Electrolux appliances have graced the kitchens of fine European homes and restaurants. View the entire collection at electroluxicon.com.
