In today’s society which is driven by technology, the appreciation for nature and natural materials is on the rise. This year we are also anticipating a renewed appreciation for artisanal products and the makers that create them. There is something nostalgic about handcrafted pieces and past processes which provide a great opportunity for custom bespoke products and spaces. 1ST STOP:

STONE SHOP “Our design team often recommends starting the design process by selecting a stone,” said Justice. “A stone can be a great source of inspiration for a design project, including determining a color palette, selecting design finishes and cabinetry, and choosing other elements.” The artisans working at Architectural Justice’s stone shop hand craft and fabricate custom countertops for kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces and many other surface applications. The 10,000-sq.-ft. fabrication facility brings together an experienced production team and state-of-the art computer numerical control (CNC) equipment under one roof.

The stone artisans use a state-of-the-art Robotic SawJet to cut granite and stone with incredible precision for countertops, fireplace surrounds, and many other applications.

This metropolitan kitchen features custom furniture style cabinetry which was designed and built with many details and custom elements. The cabinetry is painted grey with a black highlight.

2ND STOP:

CABINET SHOP After making your stone selection, the next step is choosing cabinetry and other architectural wood elements, such as beams, fireplaces, staircases and doors. “It’s important to think about how you and your family will use a space so design functionality is kept at the forefront,” said Justice. “Our craftsmen add finishing touches with hand applied finishes, multi-step distressing, and catalyzed clear coating, depending on your taste and the use of the end-product.”

The master craftsmen at Architectural Justice have many years of experience building custom kitchens, bathrooms and bars, as well as other architectural elements like custom beams, fireplaces, staircases and doors.

The iron and wood door above was designed to resemble an antique elevator door which slides open to a custom wine cellar.

3RD STOP:

METAL SHOP Ornamental iron adds interest to any room,” said Justice. “Our design team can work with you to create unique designs that elevate the look of your staircase, bar area, fireplace or other space.” The artisans working in the ornamental iron shop offer custom welding, metal fabrication, and CNC plasma cutting.

The custom metal staircase and railing at Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe features an ornate design with a hand-applied gold finish.

4TH STOP:

CAST STONE SHOP For centuries, artisans have used cast stone products for ornamental and decorative applications–dating back to the year 1138 when it was first used in Carcassonne, France. “The use of cast stone offers a timeless style and is a perfect way to enhance fireplace surrounds, range hoods, door surrounds and other architectural interior and exterior elements,” said Justice.

THE DESIGN PROCESS PRE-DESIGN Work one-on-one with a designer to share your vision and browse products and applications that will help to determine your sense of style. Plan to outline your project goals. A home visit may be scheduled if necessary. At the end of this phase, you will receive rough design plans for your space along with an experienced based estimate.

DESIGN Let the fun begin! Make your final design selections and view computer drawings that will help you visualize your space. The design team will take detailed field measurements and you will be provided with a proposal outlining your project’s scope of work.

PRODUCTION

Drawings are perfected for fabrication, material and labor acquisitions are made, and final packets for production and installation are created.

These custom cast stone light fixtures hover over the 16 foot marble pastry case at Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe.

CONSTRUCTION & INSTALLATION This phase will bring your design to life. The lead carpenter and project manager will perform a final walkthrough to ensure the project is complete.

WARM Farmhouse Feels Achieving the Charm and Character of a Country-Style Kitchen

There is something about a country-style kitchen that oozes the cozy essence of “home.” It’s easy to imagine a farm fresh meal being prepared, filling the room with a delicious aroma, waiting to be enjoyed in the making of memories with family and friends.

14

When a Summit County family asked Architectural Justice to design their new kitchen with a farmhouse vibe in mind, the design team brainstormed ways to give it additional character. To start, the team worked with the customer to select a stone for a 7-seat feature island that would help set the tone for the room’s color palette and finishes. “The client selected Barracato granite, which has beautiful neutral hues, green undertones and a lot of dimension,” said James Justice, owner of Architectural Justice. “Based on the slab, we knew we wanted to pull in creams and feature the island in a sage-like green to set it apart.”

GET THE LOOK

Architectural Justice’s cabinet shop added farmhouse details to the kitchen island, including beadboard paneling and traditional turned wood legs. Country-style inset cabinetry echoed the island’s rustic feel. “The hand-applied finish on the off-white cabinets give it a lived-in look that perfectly represents the farmhouse style,” said James. “We also included waterfall glass panes to the end cabinets on the stove side of the kitchen to feature homewares. The cabinets also include inner and under cabinet lighting, which set a comfortable mood in the evening.” The farm-fresh cabinetry is uniform throughout the kitchen. “All of the cabinetry has a furniture-like feel, adding to this comfortable space,” said James. “We combined an integrated refrigeration panel with decorative display cabinets to make it look like one furniture piece.”

15

Rustic metal serves as a motif throughout the kitchen, repeating throughout the space. The farmhouse sink, custom zinc kitchen hood, cabinet hardware, industrial light fixtures and handcrafted metal strapping on beams all have a metal finish. “Our cabinet shop and ornamental iron shop worked together to create the rustic-style fireplace mantle and ceiling beams, which bring so much warmth and character to the space, said James. A farmhouse style kitchen offers a sense of relaxed sophistication and is timeless. Whether you are inspired by a French, Tuscan or an all-American farmhouse theme, it will stand the test of time and will add a cozy feel to your home.

16

No farmhouse kitchen is complete without a well equipped walk-in pantry. “We partitioned part of the hallway entering the kitchen and transformed it into a functional pantry,” said Darlene Justice. “To convey a European farmhouse look, we created arched entryways to the new pantry and to the hallway leading to the kitchen space.” The pantry design includes faux wood planking on a feature wall, open shelving, a custom wine and coffee station, and distressed gunmetal gray cabinetry accompanied by open shelving. “Our team added inset wire to the bottom shelving as a little farmhouse detail,” said James.

ARCHITECTURAL JUSTICE CAFE RECIPE

Butternut Squash Bisque Yield: 6-8 servings INGREDIENTS: 1 medium butternut squash 6 cloves garlic, minced 2 shallots, finely diced ½ cup dry white wine 1 ½ cup heavy cream 6 cups vegetable stock 2 tbsp. vegetable oil 1 tbsp. salt 2 tsp. pepper 1 tsp. cinnamon (ground) 1 tsp. ginger (ground) ¼ tsp. nutmeg (ground) Salt and pepper to taste INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Peel and seed squash and cut into 1-inch

cubes. Toss cubed squash with 1 tbsp. oil, salt, pepper, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg. Place on a baking sheet in a single layer. Bake for 30-35 minutes until squash is browned and tender. Once squash is roasted, add the remaining tablespoon of oil to a medium saucepan. When oil is hot, add garlic and shallots and cook over medium heat until shallots are translucent (about 8 to 10 minutes). Deglaze pan with wine and reduce the liquid by half. Add roasted squash, heavy cream and 4 cups of vegetable stock. Bring to a boil then reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and puree with an immersion blender adding remaining stock as necessary to achieve a creamy velvety texture (if using a standard blender, allow the bisque to cool slightly before blending). Give a final seasoning with salt and pepper and serve.
