PUBLISHER’S NOTE How does the city of Cleveland inspire you? I asked myself this question when my company gained possession of new land located in Strongsville’s historic district on Pearl Road. I had a vacant lot, a blank slate, and an opportunity to create a destination for Clevelanders to experience something different. In July 2017, we opened the doors to Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe – a multiconcept space designed to inspire. Before breaking ground to build this new venture, I turned to my hometown for architectural inspiration. I admired the tall columns and arched windows of the United Bank Building in Ohio City – one of Cleveland’s historic, gilded bank buildings rich with art deco elements designed to impress depositors of the past. I looked to Cleveland’s iconic Hope Memorial Bridge with its metalwork reminiscent of 1930s elegance. Then I took a second look at my plans for our new space and decided to blend Cleveland’s history of ornamental architecture with modern European glamour. Our new Strongsville venture could not have been possible without our team of skilled designers, artisans, contractors, makers and doers. These individuals embody “Cleveland hustle” and are part of what makes this city a new destination for others around the map. I hope this Cleveland issue of Experience Living inspires you to dream big for you and your family and add a little Cleveland pride to your home.

Drawing from Cleveland's Past DESIGNING A CUSTOM DRAWING BOARD, MADE POSSIBLE WITH CLEVELAND INNOVATION Imagine architects of the past drafting a building to scale completely freehand. Their tools consisted of a sketch block, a pencil, and a conventional kit of drawing scales, T-squares, triangles and compasses. The saying “back to the drawing board” literally illustrated the complex process of bringing a designer’s vision to life. During the design phase of a custom drawing board, Architectural Justice stumbled upon a fun fact: A Cleveland company invented the device that improved the way architects, engineers, decorative designers, and draftsmen sketched out their initial designs. Universal Drafting Machine Co., a former Cleveland company, invented the Rapid Sketching Device in 1901, which helped designers draft exteriors and interiors quicker and with finer detail and fewer errors. “In a way, this Cleveland-born invention revolutionized the field of planning, design and construction,” said James Justice, owner of Architectural Justice. “Without this device, it would be significantly more difficult for those without computer software to sketch designs to scale and with precision.”

The Rapid Sketching Device invented by Cleveland’s Universal Drafting Machine Co. in 1901 decreased the number of tools needed for drafting designs and improved the drawing of parallel lines and angles at various scales.

4

To pay homage to this Cleveland invention, Architectural Justice conceptualized a custom drawing board with a vintage Cleveland theme. The fine ironwork that graces the drawing board is intended to mimic Cleveland’s iconic Lorain-Carnegie Bridge and classical 1930s ornamental design that embellishes many downtown buildings, including Severance Hall and the Terminal Tower.

BE INSPIRED Explore Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe – Cleveland’s newest destination for artisan living. When guests walk through the ten foot tall revolving door at Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe, they enter an Instagram-worthy backdrop of glamour. Architectural Justice’s newest flagship location on Pearl Road in Strongsville’s historic district is a multiconcept space offering cooking classes, culinary events, Euro-inspired café cuisine, and artisan furniture and home goods – some of which are handcrafted by Architectural Justice at its Medina design center. “We get excited when people appreciate the space we’ve created,” said James Justice, the owner. “When we opened July 2017, we were hoping to create a one-of-a-kind destination for Clevelanders to get inspired and bring creativity and style into their homes.” Justice and his team sought inspiration in Cleveland’s European-influenced architecture when creating the plans for the Gallery & Cafe. 6

THE ARTISANS AT ARCHITECTURAL JUSTICE DESIGNED AND BUILT THE GALLERY & CAFE IN STRONGSVILLE'S HISTORIC DISTRICT FROM START TO FINISH.

Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe has been recognized by Cleveland Magazine, Cleveland Scene and Thrillist as a hot city brunch spot, hangout and destination for home décor.

“As our goal, we wanted to blend Cleveland’s rich architectural history with modern, European glamour. For example, Cleveland’s bridge trusses influenced our custom metalwork in our test kitchen, where cooking classes and private events are hosted. We also included custom wood and metal moldings bordering the interior windows to give it a Baroque, Europeaninspired look. The combination of these two concepts makes it a comfortable place unique to the Greater Cleveland area.” 7

DINE IN THE CAFE

With gold backed booths, blue glass chandeliers, and Calacatta marble bistro tables, Architectural Justice’s Cafe is meant to make guests feel like they have transported themselves to a sophisticated European setting. “We drew inspiration from modern Mediterranean cafés, juxtaposing cool-toned and gilded fixtures and floor to ceiling windows that create a bright environment.” The stylish ambiance of Architectural Justice Gallery & Cafe inspired sophisticated dishes and drinks with Mediterranean flair. Options range from banana praline waffles served with chocolate-hazelnut spread, freshly sliced bananas, and whipped cream, to an Italian tartine made with prosciutto, tomato, basil, house-made Parmesan-artichoke spread and EVOO. 10

A TASTE OF CLEVELAND “When deciding to open a cafe, we wanted to use the best local suppliers in our area,” said James Justice. “After some research, we decided to exclusively offer Rising Star Coffee Roasters in Cleveland due to their impeccable service, roasting standards and ultimately delicious coffee.” The Cafe also sources its dairy from Cleveland-based Hartzler Family Dairy. “There’s something special about having fresh local dairy with your cup of coffee,” said Rachel Schlather, owner of the blog CLEfashionista.com and a self-labeled “AJ regular.”

BE INSPIRED in the Kitchen

From conception, the Architectural Justice team knew they wanted to include a test kitchen as part of the space since they sell Sub-Zero Wolf appliances and recently completed a renovation project for Cleveland’s Trevarrow, Inc.

“It’s the perfect space for our clients to experience using the appliances, but even better, it gives the community a fun opportunity to participate in cooking classes or fun private events,” said Darlene Justice. “We want people to be inspired by the décor and environment, but also get excited about what’s possible at home. What better way to enjoy the company of family and friends than to cook and enjoy a delicious meal in a beautiful space?” The show-stopping white and grey-veined marble serves as the kitchen’s backdrop. The Architectural Justice team created a mirrored image with the statement stone to create a sense of movement in the room. Cleveland’s art deco buildings inspired the details for the test kitchen’s cabinetry – all custom crafted at Architectural Justice’s woodshop in Medina. The demonstration kitchen also opens up to a black brick patio with airplane hangar-like doors. “We were inspired by French bistro decor and loved the idea of having an open-air patio.” said Darlene Justice.

NATURAL STONE There is nothing quite like the beauty of natural stone. Architectural Justice started its collection of granite and natural stone back in the 90s and has become one of the largest stocking stone fabricators in the area with more than 3,000 slabs. The Architectural Justice team is always on the hunt for rare and exotic stones. “We search for natural stones that will give a wow factor to a home,” said Mark Ramsey, director of operations. “The artisans in the granite shop craft and fabricate custom countertops for kitchens, bathrooms, fireplaces, and many other surface applications.” CALACATTA WHITE QUARTZITE AT THE TREVARROW, INC. "We have the ability to craft custom cabinetry and furniture as well as millwork for various design applications," said Justice. “Our team of highly skilled craftsmen are dedicated to detail and have many years of experience building custom kitchens and bathrooms along with other architectural elements such as beams, fireplaces, staircases and doors.”

GLAMOUR by the Lake Modern glam and Lake Erie views make this Avon Lake home a dreamy escape. Designing a home on the lake is all about the panoramic view. No matter where you are in the home, you should be able to take a glance outside and feel instantly relaxed by the lake’s rhythmic water. When asked to collaborate on designing this Avon Lake home, James Justice, owner, and his team of designers were presented with a challenge: How could the kitchen be designed to take advantage of the beautiful Lake Erie views? “The homeowner’s wish list included a glamorous open concept space with a long kitchen island, functional layout, and of course, maximizing the beautiful lake views,” said Justice. “Our team took to the drawing board and created a custom curved island to position the homeowner’s view toward Lake Erie. The expansive island also serves as a nice gathering space for guests overlooking the great room.” Justice and his team drew inspiration from Lake Erie for the kitchen island, including a wave-inspired dine-in counter fabricated with white quartz. Arctic travertine quarried from Turkey adorns the rest of the kitchen island and countertops. The Architectural Justice team also crafted the glass-paned cabinets, custom dining table for eight, and a show-stopping fireplace fabricated with Ocean Shore marble quarried from Brazil. “We decided to book match the marble fireplace to mimic the reflection of water,” said Darlene Justice. “It was fun to draw inspiration from the home’s natural surroundings and create a sophisticated space.” 18
