Northdale Ends | Raunds
Beaconsfield MSA | M40
Northdale Ends is part of an urban expansion area on the edge of Raunds in East Northamptonshire.
Located on the M40, Beaconsfield MSA provides 3000sqm of retail facilities, an 85 bed hotel, petrol filling station and 750 car parking spaces within a woodland setting. The main retail building houses ten units including M&S, McDonalds, Starbucks and WHSmiths surrounding an atrium dining space.
The site is split over two adjacent parcels of land and Architecture 519 was appointed by Barwood Land & Estates to design the masterplan following the principles set out by the Local Authority. The masterplan incorporates 310 new homes with the focus upon high quality family housing. Existing farm buildings are refurbished to create community facilities and characterful mews houses. A 65 bed care home and commercial units are also incorporated to create a mixed use development. The detailed planning approval which was obtained working closely with the Local Authority was based on detailed design code which described a series of character areas.
Page 20
The detailed design for the buildings was developed by the team at Architecture 519 to achieve detailed planning approval, tender design and were retained by the Contractor to deliver the construction information. The striking free form curved roof offers visitors their first glimpse of the innovative design and links the adjoining business centre and Hotel with both facilities overlooking a landscaped picnic courtyard. The buildings also incorporate sustainable features with grey water recycling, reed beds and a solar wall to harness energy.
Willesden Green Cultural Centre | Brent Architecture 519 supported Linden Homes in their HCA competition winning bid to design and deliver a new library and cultural centre with an enabling residential development comprising of 95 contemporary apartments arranged in four blocks with extensive landscaped communal gardens and undercroft car parking. The working drawing package was delivered using REVIT 3D Building Information Modelling software. This delivered improved coordination with other design disciplines and sub-contractors to avoid potential clashes. Architecture 519 was appointed as lead consultant responsible for achieving planning for the residential elements of the scheme and were novated across to Galliford Try Construction to deliver the works on site.

Working with LCC, Leeds LEP and Interserve to deliver new modular Key Stage 2 (KS2) facilities, alongside internal and external refurbishment of existing buildings to very tight time-scales, on a restricted landlocked site in a deprived area of Leeds.
A new build Support & Integration Facility for BAE Systems. This challenging development on a difficult site facilitates the manufacturing of specialist equipment, combined with support offices and ancillary amenities and is part of a wider redevelopment of the site.
Architecture 519 was appointed by Crest Nicholson to develop the detailed working drawings for this competition winning design and involved working closely with the technical delivery team to deliver a workable, sustainable construction solution.
The new KS2 facility sits on part of the existing sports field, and will provide 6 no. new classrooms over two storeys with additional ancillary accommodation. Architecture 519 led the process of engaging with the school and other key stakeholders including Sport England to develop feasibility studies and achieve full planning approval. Working with Interserve and Integra, a modular contractor, Architecture 519 developed the detailed construction status design proposals and provided support during construction works which were completed before the autumn term 2017.
Page 22
Architecture 519 collaborated with the Principal Contractor, Morgan Sindall, to develop the tender stage design into a cost effective, streamlined solution and provided architectural and coordination support during he construction period. Adoption of full BIM Level 2 requirements including detailed clash detection exercises minimised potential issues on site and allowed the facility to be delivered on programme.
Working closely with Kingspan TEK the building envelope was designed to incorporate a series of ‘SIPS’ insulated wall and roof panels which could be manufactured off site. This meant that only fixing and sealing was required as on-site operations. This ensured that a high quality, thermally efficient envelope was established. Proposals for solar shading, passive stack ventilation, district heating systems and water recycling were also developed working closely with the delivery team. The finished scheme was occupied by Affinity Sutton Housing Association.

Design lead for the ÂŁ150M+ works for the full redevelopment of the former RAF site for use by the Army. The development included full detailed Planning submission and detailed tender information for a range of new and refurbished buildings and extensive works to the existing site road and services infrastructure.
The renovation of this Grade II Listed canal-side former mill building near Nottingham forms the centre-piece of a wider residential regeneration development.
Architecture 519 designed the first phase of the masterplan for Centenary Quay; the regeneration of the former ship works on the River Itchen in Southampton.
The mill has been creatively restored to provide 105 spacious, contemporary, one, two and three bedroom apartments.
This complex project relied heavily on the detailed development of end user and Stakeholder requirements, to deliver the best possible solution within exacting time and cost restraints.
The sensitive conversion keeps and enhances many of the original features of the building, whilst providing an attractive and desirable place for people to live. Innovative roof terraces were cut in to the existing roof with Architecture 519 working closely with the local authority and English Heritage to develop the design and details.
A sustainable mix of family homes and apartments were arranged around landscaped courtyards to create a strong community feel. Excellent fabric performance was designed in to the houses to enhance the environmental performance of the scheme.
Architecture 519 obtained full planning and listed building consent for the scheme, and delivered it on site working alongside the main contractor.
Page 24
A central heat and power plant was constructed to serve the houses. Detailed planning approval was obtained and Architecture 519 provided support throughout the build programme through to occupation. During the process, we engaged with development agencies and all other interested stakeholders.

2016 Bulge Cohort | Leeds Working with LCC, Leeds LEP and Caledonian Modular to concurrently deliver extensions and new build facilities at four schools across Leeds to extremely tight programmes and critical deadlines. Through intensive stakeholder engagement and early contact with the Local Planning Authority, four separate planning applications were submitted and construction works began on site within 3 months of our appointment for the delivery of ‘Bulge Cohort’ accommodation for the September 2016 term. The works comprised of several new build standalone accommodation blocks, internal remodeling, small extensions to provide additional teaching spaces, and in one case, the infilling of an existing external courtyard with a new 2 storey block. All works were completed over the summer holidays when the schools were closed to pupils.
Page 26
Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory | Bristol The former Elizabeth Shaw Chocolate Factory site in Bristol is being regenerated to create a vibrant new mixed use community which incorporates residential, commercial and community uses. Where appropriate, the existing factory buildings have been retained for reuse. These are supplemented with new houses and apartments arranged around a series of landscaped public spaces. The site has been opened up with new links to the city’s existing cycle network supported by café and retail facilities located within key buildings to provide a focal point for the wider community. The design has been developed through extensive local consultation including a series of local workshops and celebrates the strength of the local materials and the former industrial building forms.
NPA | Gateshead This new-build firearms training and operational facility for Northumbria Police, incorporated two 70m long, vertically stacked indoor firing ranges with state of the art CGI projection targetry. The ground floor range provided 25m of 180 degree live fire judgemental training, an immersive hydra training suite and external vehicle tactics training area. Architecture 519 worked with RLB and the Client to develop the project brief with the key stakeholders and to prepare detailed planning and tender information before being novated to Kier Northern for the construction phase. Changes realised through the duration of the project included achieving the different operational and training requirements. The building achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating, maintaining and enhancing the ecological value of the site.
