Willi Baumeister (1889–1955) is one of the most important artists of the 20th Century in the German speaking world and one of the most eminent artists of the modern age.
He created about 2,000 paintings, 2,200 drawings and 240 prints. In addition to his work as an independent artist, he designed the sets and costumes for theatrical productions and worked in commercial art and graphic design, as well as on exhibition design. In numerous articles, he stated his positions on issues of non-representational art and wrote a comprehensive theoretical work entitled Das Unbekannte in der Kunst (The Unknown in Art).
