These places correspond to a standard hotel. They normally offer rooms with a bathroom and they provide a continental breakfast. This category includes a wide range of places, while some can be very essential and cheap, others can be more expensive. These places are usually well connected with the city centre and with the main airport or train station. These places are smaller than the previous ones and are usually family-run. They are cheaper, but sometimes you may have to share the bathroom. The quality greatly vary, and for the same price you can get an excellent service or a very low one. Breakfast is usually included, but you will not have all the choice you have in a normal hotel. Usually there is a choice of coffee or tea, pastries and/or bread, jam and butter, cereals and juices. These places are usually a bit more expensive but, generally they are beautiful places, family run, and offering a very good service. The breakfast may be very good, including a wide range of home made products. However, if it is a holiday period these places can have no vacancies. They are usually located in beautiful areas, which may be a bit tricky to reach via public transport. This kind of accommodation is increasingly popular, especially in the countryside. These places can

correspond to a farm stay here, being family run, and far away from big cities. They can have a swimming pool, a Spa or they can offer the possibility of riding horses. According to the area and their popularity they can also be very cheap or very expensive. All of these places grow, sell and cook their own products (vegetables, fruits, wines, honey, oil preserves…). However, if you are travelling in the Alps or in a season which is not summer it may be very cold and rainy. COMMENT

This is the present tense of modal verb DOVERE (To want – To would like). This verb form is used in Italian to convey obligations and orders. English expresses this same meaning through the use of the modal verbs must and have to. The subject pronouns are given in brackets because they are not necessary in Italian and they are normally omitted. To understand who performs the action of the verb (that is, who is the subject) the speakers rely on the verb endings. 2. Some numbers, days of the week, months and seasons DICIANNOVE SETTEMBRE

Approaching Italian Language through the movie IL CONTE MAX (Count Max) Il Conte Max (1957) stars one of the most famous Italian actors ever: Alberto Sordi (1920 – 2003). He was also a film director and during his career that spanned seven decades, Sordi established himself as an icon of Italian cinema with his representative skills at both comedy and light drama. His movie career began in the late 1930s with bit parts and secondary characters in wartime movies. Early roles included Fellini's The White Sheik in 1952, Fellini's I Vitelloni (1953) and Lo Scapolo (The Bachelor). In 1959 he appeared in Monicelli's The Great War, considered by many critics and film historians to be one of the best Italian comedies. The Hollywood Foreign Press recognized his abilities when he was awarded a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Il Diavolo (1963). Sordi died shortly before his eighty-third birthday following a heart attack. A crowd in excess of a million gathered to pay their last respects at his funeral by the Basilica of St. John Lateran, the largest of such event ever attended in Rome, second only to that of Pope John Paul II who died two years later. Alberto is a newspaper vendor in Roma fascinated by the local high society. His secret dream is to be part of it or at least socialize with that people he can only watch on the newspapers he sells. When Alberto befriends with an aristocratic older man, 'Il Conte Max', fallen into disgrace, his dreams seem to be realized. In fact Max starts to teach him the right manners and social habit to enter high society world. Through this, unexpectedly, Alberto succeeds to have a relationship with a young baroness! But the more he goes on, the more he understands that it is better to remain within his previous world.

Allora a presto!”. The lady answers: “Yes. When would you like to come?” “Next week, from November 1st until Sunday” mum answers. The lady says: “Great! Three nights, isn’t it?” “Yes!”, Mum replies. The lady says: “For four people there is a room with two double beds, or a room with a double bed and two single ones. Which room would you prefer?”. Mum has a look at Pierino and his sister and says: “I think that we’d prefer the room with two single beds and a double bed. Is it a room with private bathroom?”. “Of course”, the lady answers. “Great”, says mum. “And, is breakfast included?”. “Yes”, answers the lady. “Breakfast will be from 8 am until 10.30 am! Jams, pastries and the fruit are home produced”. “Mmm, that sounds great!”, mum says. Then, mum asks: “Is that fine if we arrive around midday?”. “Sure”, says the lady, “the room will be available from ten; after that, you can get the key”. Mum replies: “Perfect, thank you! And, see you soon”. The lady says: “Goodbye Madam! See you next week!” Mum hangs up the telephone and says: “Great, I’ve booked the room. Sara and her parents are going exactly to this same farm, so that we can spend the week-end together!”. “That’s awesome!”, say Pierino and his sister. HOMEWORK Exercise 1.
