A Message From the Headmaster Defining Archmere Dear Friends: As I begin my second year as Headmaster, I am particularly grateful to all of you for creating and sustaining such a wonderful place – more than a superb academic institution, more than a beautifully historic and artistic oasis, more than a place that expands students’ interests, abilities, and skills, and more than a faith community embracing spirituality. Taking each of these experiences together, we begin to define “Archmere.” This issue of The Archmerean captures some of the activity that has taken place over the last several months. I hope that you take the time to read through the issue, and continue to “stay tuned in” with all of the action by visiting our Web site often at www.archmereacademy.com. Our exciting new Web site continues to be enhanced, and plans are in place to expand its interactivity with all members of the Archmere community. In conversation with students, parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and board members, I note a shared sense about the special feeling of “being on campus.” Since all of us cannot be on campus every day, we hope that the “virtual campus” we are building will become like the Great Room, den or kitchen in our home – where family gathers to share stories, celebrate accomplishments, mourn losses, and support one another through our life experiences. As we begin the 2011-12 school year – Archmere’s 80th Anniversary – each student and teacher has been issued a MacBook Pro laptop computer. This new teaching and communications tool, to be used effectively and efficiently by teachers and students, maintains Archmere’s cutting-edge programs. While issues of inappropriate use of technology, internet safety, and cyber-bullying are in the news, we believe that it is important for Archmere students to learn appropriate uses and protocols while in high school with parent and teacher oversight, so that they will be prepared to handle the freedom of the college environment. This philosophy of rigorous preparation for college has been a hallmark of an Archmere education.
“This philosophy of rigorous preparation for college has been a hallmark of an Archmere education.”
After 80 years, Archmere continues to be a top-notch, relevant, and competitive academic institution, enriched by the history of the Archmere estate and the charism of our Catholic, Norbertine heritage. To capture these elements, along with the “feeling” of being on campus, we have developed the following core values from our understanding of our traditions, and have crafted them in a statement that we believe begins to describe “Archmere” – A Catholic, Norbertine COMMUNITY valuing RESPECT for one another and filled with ZEAL to grow in REVERENCE (pietate) and WISDOM (scientia). For 35 of the 80 years we celebrate, girls have been an important part of Archmere. Our cover celebrates the wonderful history of women at Archmere – students and alumnae who began making their mark in the fall of 1975 – my senior year at Archmere. We want to make a special effort to reach out to our alumnae this anniversary year. Stay tuned for announcements and news about opportunities to get together as women of Archmere. Included in this issue is our Honor Roll of Donors – so many people who believe in Archmere’s vision and who have partnered in our work with their philanthropy. In these challenging economic times, we are especially grateful for such generosity. We thank everyone who contributed “time, talent, and treasure” this past fiscal year, ending June 30, 2011, by assuring everyone that the contributions received enhanced the daily experiences of our students and staff. Growing our number and amount of gifts also insures our financial stability for future Archmere students. Please stay in touch through our Web site, as well as through “old fashioned” communications, too – phone, letter, and personal visit! I hope to see many of you throughout the coming year at the many activities and events that are planned nearly every day. Until then, may God bless you, your families and friends. Sincerely,
The new Technology Center at the entrance to Saint Norbert Hall, complete with a workroom, video studio, and student lounges, is a visual sign of the extensive changes that are taking place in education. Students have access to vast amounts of information well-beyond textbooks, and our teachers are supporting students’ exploration, skill development, and learning.

Women at Archmere
Celebrating 35 Years of Co-education
Mother-Daughter Auks: Archmere Legacy in the Female Line Ten years ago, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of co-education at Archmere, Mary Ann Slowik ’79 and her daughter Courtney ’04 were featured in the 2001 Winter Archmerean as a rare pair – mother and daughter Auks. Mary Ann, a graduate from the first four-year class of women, was the first Archmere alumna to send her daughter to the academy.
“I always wanted her to come here,” says Jill (Nolan) Collins ’85 of her daughter, Ashley ’13. “I was so prepared for college – more than anyone around me – and I wanted to her have the same level of preparation.” Jill Collins’ father and Ashely’s grandfather, John Nolan, also graduated from Archmere in 1953. Of the female students whose mothers attended Archmere, several have legacies that stretch across multiple generations like the Collins family.
“Archmere educates more than just the mind – it’s a tradition and an experience, a lifelong thing that you carry with you – it becomes part of who you are.”
Both of Abby Filliben’s ’13 parents Sean ’85 and Danielle ’86 (Zakielarz), as well as her aunt, her three uncles, and her grandfather Vincent Filliben ’47 attended Archmere. “There’s such a family connection for us here,” says Danielle. “Archmere educates more than just the mind – it’s a tradition and an experience, a lifelong thing that you carry with you – it becomes part of who you are.” Abby, who is now a junior, regularly wears her mom’s class ring.
This past year, as we prepared to celebrate the 35th anniversary of this milestone in Archmere’s history, the count was up to over ten female students from the classes of 2011-2014 with “mother Auks.”
1932 The first Mothers’ Guild was founded. The Mothers’ Guild was the first fundraising group for the school. The first Mothers’ Guild president was Mrs. Frank Garey.

1966 Mrs. Germaine Chagnon joined the language department, serving as the first female teaching faculty member. She taught French.
Several Archmere alumnae and their daughters who were current students at Archmere during the 2010-2011 academic year gathered at the back of the Patio for a group picture. and not only academically. It taught me responsibility, accountability, and the importance of respect. I feel I would not have had the same opportunities had I gone to another high school.” She shares that her experience and those of her daughters has been similar in some ways – having had the same teachers, classes, and some of the same interests like theatre – but that their individual personalities have made each of their experiences at the academy unique.
On September 4, 1975, Archmere became a co-educational academy when 50 female students – 30 freshmen, 15 sophomores, 4 juniors and one senior – joined the 321 boys.
1975
Gathering together in The Patio Library for dinner, many of the mother-daughter pairs shared that same sentiment. They talked about the things that have changed – the expanded girls’ athletics program, popular styles and the uniforms, the new classes and the ever-increasing opportunities… And they talked about the things that have remained steadfast – a few favorite faculty members, some classic summer reading selections, the sense of a community on campus, and an education that prepares young women (and men) for excellence in their collegiate careers and beyond.
1975 The first women’s sports were introduced at Archmere – cheerleading, basketball and softball. All three were coached by Mrs. Marcy Aitken.
Geralyn S. Williams became the first alumna of Archmere Academy when she graduated in 1976.

Teaching the Girls Co-ed Legacies – Glancing at the Numbers We call a student or a graduate a “legacy” when one or both of his or her parents attended Archmere. This is a special group of individuals, to which more and more females are becoming a part.
Marcy Aitken
Lou D’Angelo ’64
Marcy Aitken was asked to join the Archmere faculty in 1975, in preparation for the first co-ed classes. At the time, she was 42 years old and the mother of eight children.
Before returning to Archmere, Lou D’Angelo ’64 was a graduate student, working on his Master’s at Boston College’s Math Institute and teaching as an adjunct at Regis College, an all-female institution. So when he came to Archmere in 1975, teaching female students required no adjustment for him – but things were different from the way they were eleven years prior, when he was a Auk himself.
“I felt like I was too old for the job; that what they needed was a young energetic girl out of college to kick-start the programs for girls. Plus, my youngest child was in pre-school and I thought, I can’t do this,” says Marcy. “So I said, I will give them three years. I will help them get started and then I’ll leave…that was almost 36 years ago.”
t Archmere has over 6,000 graduates
That first year, 1975-76, Marcy taught physical education and coached all of the girls’ teams, which consisted at the time of cheerleading, basketball, and softball.
t 29% of Archmere graduates are female
“We were accepted in such a respectful manner – the girls and I,” says Marcy, “it was really a wonderful transition.”
t Over 275 male alumni and current students are legacies
Marcy taught physical education and ran the girls’ athletic programs for six years before expanding the health curriculum and introducing the drug and alcohol counseling program in 1981.

Current Archmere Faculty and Staff Members Reflect on that First Year
“The environment of the school changed a bit – I think the girls had a civilizing influence on the guys,” says D’Angelo. He comments that while some things changed, the students transitioned well into an environment of coeducation. “People in favor of single sex education at the time might have argued that perhaps the girls would be scared off or feel it was a social taboo to excel in the classroom, but that was never in the culture of this school,” he says. “In fact, from day one Archmere was a good atmosphere where both girls and guys could thrive, and the social aspect did not interfere with the academics.” So much so that D’Angelo sent his own daughter, Michele to Archmere. She graduated in 1995.
From the Archmere Alumni Newsletter in October 1975…
1985 51% of the graduating class of 117 students were female. Prior to this class, the closest the school had gotten to an even gender split was the year before, in 1984, when 44% of the class was female.
“With the opening of school on September 4, 1975, 50 girls joined 321 boys to make Archmere a co-educational institution: 30 freshmen girls, 15 sophmores, 4 juniors, and one senior. Needless to say, on rostering day, there may have been some misgivings on the part of some of the boys; however, adjustments were soon made as ties got a little straighter and hair a little better groomed! We look forward to this change making for an even better Archmere.”
The class with the largest female representation (57%) in Archmere history graduated.
2001
Archmere recognized Kathryn (Cunningham) Hall ’04 at the first female to receive the alumnus/alumna of the year award.
1994
Dr. Rosalie Mirenda was named the first female chair of the board of trustees. She served in this role until 2007.

Looking Forward to Laptops
Login for Info!
Archmere Academy launched a one-to-one laptop initiative this fall 20th century educational reformer John Dewey once said, “If we teach today as we taught yesterday, we rob our children of tomorrow.” The faculty at Archmere Academy is constantly modifying their curricula and teaching strategies to reflect the latest, best practices in education, to incorporate cutting edge technologies, and to prepare Archmere students for a bright tomorrow. During an in-service day in January, every Archmere faculty member received a MacBook Pro laptop and was trained according to their level of expertise by Apple professionals and members of the academy’s technology department. The training, along with several other meetings, in-service days and training sessions, were held in anticipation of the launch of the one-to-one student laptop initiative, which began this Fall. The one-to-one program provides each Archmere student with a Mac Book Pro laptop and accompanying software that can be transported back and forth from home and school, and will be an essential, daily resource in the classroom. All last year, each academic department researched e-books, software programs and online tools to enhance their curricula with the dawn of this technology initiative, and the faculty has collectively contributed to an Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) to insure student safety and adherence to the Archmere School Code.
10
Archmere Archmerean 2011-Summer_v21.indd 10-11
Additionally, Archmere has prepared for this change with the creation of the Technology Center and Audiovisual Studio in Saint Norbert Hall. Established in part by the Class of 2011, who made the first Senior Class Gift in recent Archmere history toward the project, the center provides a place for docking stations, as well as high-tech troubleshooting and collaboration. While it’s an adjustment for sure, the Archmere community is used to using technology on a daily basis as part of the learning experience. Archmere faculty members have been regularly incorporating technology into their curricula – from iPads in the language learning center, to digital media and design courses, to online science programs – for quite some time. “In the science department, we already use computers very regularly for maintaining electronic notebooks, data collection through probes and interfaces, graphing and other software,” says science teacher, Glenn Hartman.
“By expanding our technical base to a one-to-one program, it will only elevate our current program.” “One to One opens up so many possibilities that it is hard to know where to start when talking about the benefits of the program,” says faculty member Rodrigo Gutierrez. “In history, we are very excited about how one to one will help us make the move to eBooks and the advantages they provide to kids over traditional books like: note-taking, searching for specific information, copying and pasting important material, and increased accessibility.” Added benefits of the one to one program include a projected reduction in paper waste, a lightening of students’ backpacks as books go digital, and the potential to introduce new teaching methods and educational programs into the classroom.
“We are helping to make our students more independent learners,” says Spanish teacher Therese Mehringer. “We are giving our students the tools that will help them succeed in college.” The students received their MacBook Pros at the laptop distribution days during orientation week in August.
The one-to-one program provides each Archmere student with a Mac Book Pro laptop...an essential, daily resource in the classroom.
Become Part of Our Online Community! On March 1, 2011, Archmere launched its redesigned Web site at www.archmereacademy.com. The user-friendly navigation and expanded features have quickly made the site a browser ‘favorite’ in the Archmere community. Now, as we begin the 2011-12 academic year, we are ready to launch phase II of the Web site – introducing log-ins. Logging in to the Web site will give you access to role-specific information such as directories, downloads, and invitations, allow you to instantly update your own contact information, and customize a MyArchmere Portal page to organize all of the news, events, and announcements that you want to keep track of. A letter providing instructions for logging in and a personal, Archmere-issued user name and temporary password for each constituent recently arrived on doorsteps. If we do not have a valid e-mail address on file for you, you will need to provide one in order to obtain a user name. More information on how to start logging-in was included in the mailing.

Archmere Book Club It’s certainly no surprise to anyone that at an institution known for academic excellence like Archmere Academy, there is a lot of reading going on. From the classics to contemporary novels, books are discussed, authorial intentions are debated, and themes and motifs are examined. But it’s not just English classes diving into literature or forming discussion groups; in fact, it’s not even just the students.
“...an opportunity to learn about one another’s culture, background and travel experiences.”
Since 2006, numerous members of the Archmere faculty and staff have been reading, discussing, debating and gathering together to examine works of literature as part of the Archmere Book Club. Started by Mrs. Deb Oleck, Archmere’s Learning Specialist who joined the faculty in 2005, the Archmere Book Club has grown in size over the years, having as many as 15-20 people in attendance at some meetings. Each fall, Oleck and other members of the club re-invite all new
12
Archmere Archmerean 2011-Summer_v21.indd 12-13
and existing faculty and staff to join, and some former Archmere employees, who joined while on campus, still participate. As is the protocol with most book clubs, the members suggest and vote on selections for the year and arrange to meet about once every two months. But this club is more than a group of people who read the same book – it’s become a bonding experience for its members, and a chance to expand their literary and culinary palates. The club’s first book was The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, and the meeting was held at Oleck’s home. Though occasionally the group meets in a restaurant or on campus, the members enjoy meeting in one another’s homes, taking turns being the host or hostess. “We really like the intimacy it adds,” says Oleck. The first meeting started this tradition of holding the gatherings in one another’s homes – as well as the tradition of themed meals. In the spirit of the book, which takes place in Afghanistan, the club shared a Middle Eastern dinner as they discussed the text. Culturally themed, pot-luck style dinners have been “an opportunity to learn about one another’s culture, background and travel experiences,” for the group, says Oleck.
Though all of the club’s members are current or former employees of Archmere, many of them have little interaction with one another on campus. “We’re from different departments; we work in different buildings, some are staff, some are faculty…there’s little opportunity, sometimes, to get to know one another,” says Oleck.
After reading Still Summer in 2007, the group arranged a Q&A session with the author, Jacquelyn Mitchard, who spoke to them over conference call. They’ve taken field trips to hear authors speak; going to Washington College in 2008 to see Nuredden Farah, author of Knots, and to the Pearl Buck House as a follow up to reading The Good Earth.
Evidence that this book club is comprised of no ordinary readers – but of educators and life-long learners – the group frequently takes the discussion beyond the pages. “When we read The Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult, a murder mystery, our group was split down the middle when it came to who committed the crime,” says Tara Tatasciore, registrar. “So we reached out to the author in an e-mail with our question. She responded quickly and set the record straight, much to the surprise of everyone.”
The group has also gone together to the movies to view and discuss the film versions of books they have read, like The Soloist by Steve Lopez or, most recently, Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen. With a past reading list that contains over 30 novels and short story collections, what’s next for the Book Club? This summer it’s The Girl Who Fell From the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow, and perhaps some multicultural cuisine.
Some of the members of the Archmere Book Club gather in Dr. Christy’s home to discuss Firefly Lane. Outstanding Senoirs - Graduated and Off Running The Archmere Academy class of 2011 was truly a class of leaders – in the classroom, in the community, and on the field. Several of the students who graduated on June 5 will be going on to participate in athletics at the collegiate level; among them, Athletics Medal Winners Joseph Richard (JR) Creekmore Jr. and Lindsey Olivere.
JR Creekmore and Lindsey Olivere Recruited as a walk-on, JR will head to the Division I University of Tennesse in the Fall to run both cross country and track. “The team is on the rise at Tennesse,” says JR, who is excited to join the Volunteers’ family. Earning Second Team All-State accolades in cross country and swimming as well as First Team All-State in track during his senior year, JR received recognition on All-State and All-County teams every year for four years. He was captain of the cross country, track and swim teams during senior year and was named the track team’s MVP for the 2010-2011 season. “Archmere was a great atmosphere to thrive socially, academically and athletically for me,” he says, listing some of his greatest memories from high school as the Kairos senior retreat, participating in the service trip to Avery County, North Carolina, and winning the cross country state title with his team his freshmen and sophomore years. In addition to his friends, JR says he will miss the teachers who “care so much about the students.” A member of the National Honor Society (NHS) and the National Science Honor Society (NSHS,) JR plans to major in engineering and feels that Archmere has helped prepare him for an easy transition. “At orientation, even other engineering students were impressed by the classes I had already taken at Archmere,” he says. “I feel I will be prepared for the workload.”

Like JR, Lindsey Olivere plans to major in engineering – specifically, biomedical engineering. Already accepted to Duke University’s Pratt school of engineering, Lindsey is interested in participating in the many student research opportunities that the university and its on-campus hospital have to offer. “Majoring in biomedical engineering will give me all the requirements for medical school if I choose to go there, but will also open doors for careers in engineering, pharmaceuticals and research,” she says. The runner is particularly interested in research surrounding prosthetic limbs. “I’ve always been really active and I’d like to help people who want to be active but aren’t able to be - to help them realize that dream,” says Lindsey. Recruited for Duke’s Division I cross country, indoor and outdoor track teams, Lindsey was team captain and First Team All-State in all three sports and the 2010 Delaware State winner of the Wendy’s High School Heisman Award. She qualified for the Nike National XC Championship, having placed third in the regional meet. In track, Lindsey was ranked 7th in the nation in the two-mile and earned all-state accolades each year. In addition, Lindsey was the Class President for three consecutive years and was involved in several activities such as TEAMS, community service, the Green Arch student newspaper, the play and mock trial. She was also a member of NHS and NSHS and participated in the Science Olympiad. Lindsey was awarded the Archmere medal at graduation, the school’s highest honor, for best exemplifying the ideals and values of the academy. “I’m going to miss the close knit community of Archmere and knowing everyone on campus,” she says. “I don’t think you realize what a nurturing environment it is here until you leave.”
2010-11 Winter and Spring Sports Review During the fall sports season, the Auks won the Diamond State Athletic Conference (D.S.A.C.) title and qualified for the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (D.I.A.A.) state championship in every sport. Though the winter sports teams were unable to match the success of their Fall counterparts, winning seasons were upheld by the girls’ basketball team and the boys’ and girls’ swimming teams and record setting performances were set by the boys’ swimming team.
Boys’ Basketball
Ice Hockey
The boys’ basketball team posted a 7-3 conference record but struggled against their non-conference opponents and finished the regular season with an overall record of 9-11. Girls’ Basketball The girls’ basketball team won the D.S.A.C. title with a 12-0 record but, similar to the boys’ team, didn’t fare well against their non-conference opponents and posted an overall record of 13-7. The Auks qualified for the D.I.A.A. state tournament but lost a hard fought game to Padua in the first round by the score of 41-38. In addition, Steve Colella was selected as the D.S.A.C. Coach of the Year. All-D.S.A.C.: Erin Moffitt ’11 (1st team); Amanda Vaile ’12 (1st team); Michelle Zambito ’11 (2nd team); Ali Hazel ’12 (honorable mention.) Blue-Gold Senior Game: Erin Moffitt ’11.

The ice hockey team, which competes in the Varsity B Division of the Delaware Scholastic Hockey Association, finished the regular season with a 3-12 record. Despite having only ten players on the roster, the Auks were competitive with most of the teams in their division and qualified for the DSHA playoffs. The highlight of the season was the team’s first-round playoff win against St. Elizabeth in which the Auks defeated the Vikings by the score of 4-3 in triple overtime. DSHA All-Star Game: Ray DeMarco ’11
Indoor Track Both the boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams competed in six regular season meets and the D.I.A.A. Indoor Track State Championships at the University of Delaware Field House. Due to the scarcity of in-state venues, they traveled to the 168th Street Armory in New York City, Haverford College and Glen Mills School for opportunities to compete. Although team scores were not tabulated in the regular season meets, the boys’ team finished in 9th place and the girls’ team finished in 13th place in the state meet. The Auks made an especially strong showing in the distance events in the state meet.

The girls’ swimming team also enjoyed a successful campaign finishing with a 7-5 record, recording impressive wins against Tatnall and Brandywine and posting their seventh, consecutive winning season. They placed tenth in the state meet and advanced two relay teams and two individual swimmers to the finals.
Despite the seemingly endless rain and the innumerable cancelled practices and rescheduled contests, the spring sport teams persevered and completed their schedules. They also managed to compile an impressive list of team and individual accomplishments. The Auks captured the D.S.A.C. title in all but one of the spring sports in which a champion is declared and competed in the D.I.A.A. state tournament or meet in all ten Spring sports.

Former doubles players Katie Crifasi ’11 and Christine Clark ’11 moved up to 2nd singles and 3rd singles respectively and were the Auks’ most reliable players.
Boys’ Tennis The boys’ tennis team dropped closely contested matches to Concord, Salesianum, and Friends by identical scores of 2-3 and finished the regular season with a 6-7 record. However, the Auks bounced back with several strong performances in the D.I.A.A. state tournament. As a result of their early-round successes, the Auks placed ninth in the D.I.A.A. state tournament.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Girls’ Soccer
Only a 9-6 loss to eventual state champion Salesianum separated the boys’ lacrosse team from a perfect record during the regular season. The Auks finished the regular season 5-0 in conference play and 14-1 overall which was the best record in school history. Seeded #2 in the D.I.A.A. state tournament, the Auks received a bye in the first round and then defeated St. Mark’s 14-3 in the quarterfinal round. However, they were denied the opportunity to play for a state championship when they were upset by Tower Hill 9-7 in the semifinal round. Noel Breger was chosen as the D.S.A.C. Co-Coach of the Year. The girls’ soccer team enjoyed another successful campaign finishing the season with a 4-1 conference record and an overall record of 9-5-1. Highlights of the season were a 2-1 upset win against Charter and a 4-1 win against Ursuline on Senior Day. The Auks qualified for the D.I.A.A. state tournament as the #12 seed but were upended 4-0 by perennial power A. I. duPont in the opening round. Golf Despite a very challenging schedule, including seven teams that qualified for the D.I.A.A. state tournament, the golf team posted an enviable 12-4 record and successfully defended their D.S.A.C. title. With a talented lineup, the Auks defeated state qualifiers Caravel, St. Mark’s, and Red Lion Christian. The Auks entered the D.I.A.A. state tournament at Cripple Creek Golf Club with hopes of bettering last year’s 6th place finish but succumbed to a very difficult layout and finished in 10th place. Remembering Father Bozzelli “From the time Father Bozzelli arrived on campus he worked to improve Archmere,” says Director of Technology Carl Campion ’76, who was a junior when the Philadelphia native and Saint Norbert College graduate, Reverend (Albert) Joseph Vincent Bozzelli, O.Praem. came to Archmere in 1975 as the Director of Guidance. “We can see the results of his vision and labor in many areas: the academic program, guidance, extra curricular activities, the graduation ceremony, and the administrative structure.” After two years as Director of Guidance, helping transform the facilities to accommodate the co-eds, Father Bozzelli was named principal in 1977; a position he held for seven years. Under Fr. Bozzelli’s direction, the Principal’s Council proposed a new style of governance of the Academy – to be shared between three deans under the direction of a Headmaster, and a Board of Trustees. This was the official start of the Board of Trustees at Archmere, which held its first meeting on June 16, 1980. As principal, Fr. Bozzelli also introduced major advances in the curriculum and encouraged an expansion of the school’s extracurricular activities. A great promoter of the arts at Archmere, he aided in the creation of the band and choral programs, and initiated the plans for the 750-seat Performing Arts Center, which was completed in 1983. More than half of the student body became involved in the music and drama programs, creating a concert band and chorus, a select choral group (the Mastersingers) and a stage band.
During his tenure, the Computer Science program, the Writing Center, and a broader program in languages were also introduced, and the Board approved the conversion of several facilities in St. Norbert Hall to accommodate the changing needs of the student body. Fr. Bozzelli’s love of the school extended to the grounds of the estate itself. Each summer he assembled a crew of faculty, recent graduates, and current students to clean, paint, wax floors, and repair furniture. Carl Campion ’76 was a part of Father’s crew. “He was tireless in his efforts but there was always time for friends and colleagues,” says Campion. “He would listen, offer advice, share a meal, provide spiritual guidance, and do whatever he could to help.” “In the 1980 yearbook he was described as being able to maneuver faculty and staff into certain jobs,” says Rev. Sal Cuccia, OPraem., former Archmere faculty member, fondly. “He was able to do this because he could recognize abilities and talents in other people. “ After his time at Archmere, Fr. Bozzelli served as the associate director of admissions at St. Joseph University in Philadelphia. In 1993, he was incardinated into the Wilmington Diocese and become associate pastor at Holy Cross in Dover, and in 1995 he was appointed to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton as an associate pastor. Fr. Bozzelli also served as an associate pastor at St. Joseph in Middletown, and at St. Christopher in Chester, MD. Father Bozzelli passed away on June 1, 2011 at the age of 70. A Mass of Christian Burial was held June 7, 2011, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. He is buried at All Saints Cemetery, Wilmington, DE.

Friends of the Patio Concert Series The Green Concert Series Presented by The Friends of The Patio The 2010-2011 academic year brought a new sense of liveliness back to The Patio. Administrators and staff members began to work in the refurbished spaces, an alumni office was created on the second floor, and meetings, socials and events brought people into the the Music Room and the Library. And on May 22, 2011, music filled the courtyard as Archmere Academy and The Friends of The Patio presented the inaugural event in a new program titled “The Green Concert 2011-2012 Concert Series: Series” named in honor of Helena Springer Sunday October 23, 2011 Green Raskob who, with Sunday, December 18, 2011 husband John, built The Patio.
Sunday, March 8, 2012
The concert, held in The Patio courtyard, featured eleven award-winning Archmere Academy singers and instrumentalists and was attended by an audience of over 75 individuals.

“Many of the attendees were in The Patio for the first time,” says Joe Melloy ’52, chair of The Friends of The Patio, a volunteer group interested in the preservation and restoration of the estate. “Through enjoyment of events and sharing the story of this place, our goal is to widen the community interest to include those outside

The concert’s theme “Inspirations of Europe” was indicative of both the architecture of The Patio and the selections of the musicians. The audience was entertained by a clever combination of history and music as Dr. Marinelli and Mary Ellen Shauber provided introductions to each piece that included educational information about The Patio or the Raskob family. A High Tea reception, catered and sponsored in part by Janssen’s Market, followed the concert. The reception reflected the style and manner in which Mrs. Raskob entertained guests in The Patio, and is reminiscent of the first Archmere Academy Mothers’ Guild fundraising concerts during the early years of the school. Proceeds from the event benefitted the Friends of The Patio restoration fund, a new entity established by the group to raise money for necessary repairs and upkeep of the building.

Dan Madinabeitia ‘88
Artist, Athlete, Activist: Dan Madinabeitia ’88 To many leading the movement to end violence against women in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dan Madinabeitia ’88 – art director, husband, and father of three from New Jersey – is known as “sister Dan.” In 2010, Dan ran 50 miles around Lake Canandaigua in a New York ultra-marathon, raising awareness and funds for the women of Congo – and he has been involved with the cause since then. Dan ran his first marathon in Philadelphia in 2006, followed by the New Jersey marathon in 2009. Shortly after getting into the sport, he began reading books on running, marathons, and ultra-marathons. Running an ultra-marathon became a dream for Dan; “a monumental goal that seemed unattainable” he says. “I always wanted to do something that seemed impossible or super-human; to prove to myself that I could do it.” But the goal of running 50 miles non-stop strictly to prove something to himself struck Dan as a little too self-involved. With all of the training that lay ahead and all of the energy needed to focus on this goal, he wanted to offer his efforts up to a cause greater than himself. After conversing with a colleague from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formally Zaire, and reading reports in the news, Dan had some idea of the violent conflicts taking place in the African country. He asked his colleague about relief or service organizations dedicated to the cause and she directed him to Lisa Shannon’s Web site. 24
Archmere Archmerean 2011-Summer_v21.indd 24-25
Lisa Shannon was the first national grassroots activist in the United States working to raise awareness for the crises in the DRC. She ran 30 miles in 2005 for the cause after watching an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show that featured Women for Women International founder and CEO Zaninab Salbi. Salbi spoke about the crises facing women in the DRC and was joined by several survivors of the violent conflicts. Since that first run, Shannon’s organization, “Run for Congo Women,” has grown by the thousands and has sponsored over 1400 war-affected Congolese women through Women for Women International. Oprah Winfrey included Lisa in her list of the “20 Most Powerful Women of 2010” in the July issue of “O Magazine,” placing Lisa with the likes of Julia Roberts and Diane Sawyer.
“I always wanted to do something that seemed impossible or super-human; to prove to myself that I could do it.” Through Shannon, Dan became better acquainted with the strife of women in the DRC. “In this area of the world, rape is used as a war tactic and innocent women and children are used as pawns in the conflicts over raw materials,” he says. To date, an estimated 5.5 million people have died as a result of the conflict in Congo, which has been going on without substantial relief for over 12 years. The conflicts are centered around the valuable natural resources found in the DRC – diamonds, gold, copper, coblat, zinc and coltan, which are used in the manufacturing of mobile phones and other electronic devices such as laptops, televisions and video gaming
systems. Time and time again, villages are ravaged by warlords, rebel groups, government troops and rivaling ethnic groups looking to cash-in with major corporations by obtaining these minerals any way possible. As he trained for the 50 miler, Dan created a Web site, a blog, and a Facebook page, all of which he linked to Shannon’s, explaining his cause and his goals. The training spanned 40 weeks and took him 1,600 miles by the time he was through. Then, on October 9, 2010, Dan ran his 50 miles in 11 hours, 1 minute and 25 seconds, and dedicated his efforts and the funds raised to Run for Congo Women. “It was the most raw experience of my life – it’s an emotional ride, putting your body through a test like that, but in the end it just amazed me what I was able to do,” he says. But he’s not finished yet. Though his racing has taken a bit of a hiatus with he and his wife Elizabeth welcoming their third child, and the family’s move to a new home in Chester, New Jersey, Dan has stayed involved with the cause. He has created a few advertising pieces for Lisa Shannon’s message, in addition to designs for the “A Thousand Sisters” Facebook identity, based off of Shannon’s book, and a number of awareness campaigns connected to the book and the organization. Presently Dan
is working on the design for a “Congo Plan Now” campaign created by the “A Thousand Sisters” group. Shannon’s organization, her book’s Facebook presence and her online campaigns, with the help of Dan’s ad designs, have spawned several successful protests and have increased awareness for humanitarian issues that need to be addressed. “One of the problems,” he says, “Is that most tech companies who use minerals found in the Congo to produce goods, such as our cell phones and laptops, do not have conflict-free policies. It’s the dirty secret of major corporations that not many people know.” This problem is incredibly complex – involving supply chain issues that extend across multiple continents, multiple governments and virtually the entire tech industry. What Lisa Shannon’s group does, and what Dan helps to support, is to focus on the very specific plight of the women in Congo – refuting the complexity by simply stating that women should not be victimized. Many of the ads Dan designs center on the minerals issue and persuade people to demand conflict-free policies. The former Archmere cross country runner and wrestling captain who went on to wrestle at Syracuse University, and the winner of the 1988 Art Medal at commencement, Dan is still enjoying the roles of athlete and artist – and is happy to be using his talents to make a difference in the world. “Running the ultra marathon was a monumental experience and connecting the run to this cause – the women in the DRC – has consequently become my own permanent reminder of what can be referred to as a ‘forgotten war’ on a ‘forgotten continent’” he says.

Letter from the President of the Alumni Association
My Fellow Alumni, As the 9th President of your Alumni Association, it is my privilege and pleasure to write to you today. I thought it would be helpful to give you a little background on my experience. t I am a graduate of the Class of 1991 and a former winner of the Albert G. Tini award for service to Archmere’s athletic department my senior year. t I have a Bachelors degree in Chemical Engineering from The Pennsylvania State University, commenced in 1995, and a Masters degree in Business Administration from Widener University, commenced in 1998 t I have held various management positions at Foamex / FXI since 1996, currently as the Director of Product Line Management for FXI’s Technical Products business. t I am married to Stephanie, have two children, Jeanine (8) and Adam (5), and reside in Glen Mills, PA t I have been a member of the Alumni Association since 2001, serving as chair of the career events since joining and a former two time executive member, serving as treasurer from 2004 to 2008. My purpose in authoring this letter is to highlight two key focus areas for my term – communication and involvement. With the enhancements made by Archmere through the Office of Institutional Advancement, you have already seen some changes designed to improve alumni relations and communications. It started with the installation of the Headmaster’s monthly e-newsletters and has recently been followed by an upgraded Web site. I expect to continue this emphasis in the months to come. Equally as important is involvement. We coordinate 8 different events each year with the support of the Office of Institutional Advancement and the staff at Archmere. From the Hall of Fame to Homecoming and from Career Day to the Golf Outing, we are the avenue for all alumni of Archmere to get involved after their years at the academy are behind them. I hope to meet you at one of our next events and perhaps have some of you join us on the Alumni Association committee. Please feel free to contact me at any time via malbero@fxi.com. Sincerely,

Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees
2010–2011 Honor Roll of Donors
Dear Friends of Archmere,
In Abbot Pennings’ words, “Thank God, things continue to go very well for us.” The reasons are many, but your generosity to Archmere ranks near the top of the list. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I extend a heartfelt thanks for your support of Archmere during this past year. Your help was essential to enable us to continue to deliver the exceptional educational experience that is Archmere. Independent schools cannot live by tuition alone. Endowment income and annual financial support are essential to their sustenance. Thank you for that nourishment. As you peruse this Honor Roll of Donors for the 2010-2011 academic year, I hope you come to share the Board of Trustees’ excitement and encouragement with the breadth and depth of financial support for Archmere from graduates, parents, faculty and administrators, foundations and other friends. We are also heartened that, through your generosity, the overall amount of annual financial support for Archmere has grown once more. Continuation of this trend is essential for the financial health of the school as we strive to remain at the forefront in preparing young men and women for college, career, life and afterlife by challenging them with rigorous academic standards, developing them as whole persons and exploring with them what their moral values imply for their relationships with their current and future communities. Many of you have expanded your generosity to Archmere by the giving of yourselves. To all of you who have helped us so much over this past year, I extend a sincere thank you. Just as an independent school cannot exist without endowment and annual financial support, it cannot survive without an army of volunteers. As we embark on our 80th year and pause to reflect on the many blessings bestowed on Archmere over the years, we give God thanks in a special way for the gift of all of you. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and faithfully in St. Norbert, Sincerely,
Robert E. Shields ’60 Board Chair

Archmere Academy Prayer
Memorial Mass On March 20, 2011, a gathering of approximately 100 members of the Archmere community joined together in The Patio in prayer and remembrance for the 22nd Annual Alumni Memorial Mass. Sponsored by the Alumni Association with support from the Office of Institutional Advancement, the Alumni Memorial Mass honored the former faculty and staff and the alumni of Archmere who have passed away. Father McLaughlin served as the mass’ celebrant. Dr. Marinelli and three Archmere students provided the musical accompaniment. At the close of the mass, several alumni read out the names of the deceased faculty, staff and alumni, which were listed in the invitation and mass booklet. After mass, a breakfast reception was enjoyed in the music room.
