If These Walls Could Talk

I go to work each day and sit in a historic home that was built one-hundred-and-six years ago. My daily surroundings are a reminder of the past. I often think about the phrase, “If these walls could talk.” I wonder what they would say?

Capturing the course of events by the second is technologically possible today. I think about the number of recorded videos, digital files, photographs, and other media that we have collected as a family. Two movies, Brainstorm in 1983 and The Truman Show in 1998 deal with the subject of recording the daily life of an “average” person. The earlier piece is more fiction than reality, and the latter work almost predicts the future through the increased capacity of technology. We can “resurrect” people who have passed away through voice, film, digital, and holographic technologies. Will we come to a point when we can “replay” our own lives virtually for our descendants so they can know us and we can be with them every day of their natural lives? Would we want that?

Not knowing all that happens between the photographs, the snippets of film, or the written letters of our ancestors is a good thing. In a way, I think we cherish more of those special moments that we need to remember rather than have them played back to us to watch second by second from a digital file. I believe it is also mentally and emotionally healthy to remember the most important things and to let go, and let fade into history, the unimportant, or even the unpleasant and hurtful things that might be better off forgotten. That is not to say we should not learn from our mistakes, nor be able to practice empathy, compassion, and forgiveness in challenging moments.

Findings of a brain study published in Nature on May 26, 2021, and discussed by the National Institutes of Health in June 2021, discuss how the brain suppresses or

sustains fearful memories. “Remembering a threat is key for survival. Fearful memories help people and animals respond to potential dangers. But having these memories fade when they’re no longer useful is important to avoid undue stress and anxiety. When traumatic memories persist, they can lead to conditions like PTSD, anxiety disorders, and related problems like alcohol use disorder.”*

The study discovered that two distinct clusters of brain cells compete for the retention or removal of fearful memories, and this interaction, if not properly balanced, could cause individuals to remain inordinately fearful or fearless. We know that memories are created by connections between neurons and stored in various parts of the brain depending on the nature of the information. Our memory can either retain things for a lifetime or for just a short period of time. Our lifelong of memories are typically composed of stories that we catalog and retrieve when we need them or when something reminds us of them.

Autumn on campus is Archmere story-telling time. It is nostalgic, as we celebrate Homecoming and welcome back alumni celebrating reunions every five years after graduation. This year, we had a large turnout of alumni for the athletic events of the weekend, the Friday afternoon luncheon for alumni celebrating 50 years or more of being graduated from Archmere, as well as the Saturday evening class reunions. I heard stories about Archmere days from the 1950s through more recent years. They were all told to me with a sense of appreciation and pride. Another most popular conversation topic for those who have not been on campus for some time is how surprised they are to see the new and renovated buildings around the grassy quad, which was once a parking lot. At a Homecoming a few years ago, I redirected an alumnus who was driving his car along the brick sidewalk between the science building and gym, looking for the parking lot!

Depending on the generation, the Patio, Manor, and 1938 gymnasium were the only school buildings on campus. If you were a graduate in the 1960s, Saint Norbert Hall was the new building, closely followed by the Moglia Field House. Graduates of the 1970's were the first to study in the Justin E. Diny Science Center, and the graduates of

*“Study Reveals Brain Cells That Sustain or Suppress Fearful Memories.” National Institutes of Health (NIH), 7 June 2021, www.nih.gov/news-events/nih-researchmatters/study-reveals-brain-cells-sustain-or-suppress-fearful-memories.

the 1980s enjoyed performances and other events in the Performing Arts Center, currently under renovation, carrying now the official name of the Rocco A. and Mary Abessinio Performing Arts Center. While all of this building expansion was taking place, existing buildings like the Patio and Manor were renovated for various uses over the years. At this time each year, we pause and give thanks to all of our benefactors who have made Archmere’s growth and sustainability possible. Contributions to the Archmere Fund - the annual giving program for the Academy - and gifts to the capital campaign, “Let’s Renovate the House,” as well as recent capital gifts to refurbish the Ambrogi Fitness Center, repair the Patio stained-glass ceiling, and

install a new heating system in the Patio are all important, no matter the level of gift. We have accomplished much with the help of all of our donors, and much more needs to be done to keep pace with the necessary improvements to campus facilities, while also having resources available for scholarships and financial assistance. Grateful for all those who have contributed to the current campaign, I am hopeful that more friends will consider making a gift, and perhaps “name” a theater seat, an entrance tile, or a lobby bench.

I have been associated with Archmere since 1972 when I arrived as a 9th-grade student. In my memory, I have cataloged and filed the changes at Archmere each decade - not just with buildings and grounds, but with teachers and staff who have come and gone, some now retired and some no longer with us in this life. The “circle of life” is something I have certainly experienced, being a part of the Archmere community for six decades. The richness of that circle is the tremendous impact many teachers and staff members have made in the lives of students and families of Archmere, who, in turn, have created positive forces in the world.

At our annual faculty and staff retreat this year at Daylesford Abbey, I came across a pamphlet in the church entitled, Prayers for Autumn, written by Pater Ignotus, the pseudonym of an author and priest. In closing, I share one of the prayers, hoping that the words are as helpful and relevant for you as they are for me.

“Abba, Father, I am older now, older than I was a year ago this time. My feelings are mixed about this. On the one hand I know it only natural to grow older. In younger years I couldn’t wait to be 'grown-up.' In maturity, I wonder how I got to be the person that I am. In later years I fear the loss of my life’s potential and comfort myself with memories of younger days and find joy in watching a new generation spring up in awe and wonder. Abba, you do not grow old as I do. Yet I look to you to help me to live well, to grow well, and not just pass through this time as if it didn’t matter as much as some past or future stage of life. In your presence, Father, I can face the changes in the world and in myself peacefully. I thank You for what you have done to bring me to this present stage of growth. I trust you for what I will need this day to not just pass through but truly grow through this day and each day after.”

I know that building walls do not talk, but if they could, I believe they would be like proud parents, very satisfied with the many children that have moved beyond the walls of this place “prepared for every good work.” (2Timothy 3:17) It has been a privilege to live and grow in a place that has helped me face the changes in the world and in myself peacefully.

Sincerely,

The final panel of the stained-glass ceiling was put in place on September 16, 2024.

Mission and Heritage

“It Has Been a Wonderful Life”

Vincent James Filliben applied to enter Archmere on September 2, 1943, at age 13. His father, John, who signed the application, said that Vince expected to go to college, but that his college choice was undecided. Vince’s older brother, Francis, had entered Archmere in 1942. At Archmere, Vince played football, basketball, and baseball, winning the Athletic Medal at graduation. He was also in the Herman Joseph Society (altar servers) for four years, was Vice President of his Senior Class, and participated in the Camera Club, Glee Club, Rifle Club, and Yearbook.

The 1947 Patio noted: "It has been said that Vinnie represents the true Archmere man. He had an abundance of talent on the gridiron and the basketball court, but he used another talent so effectively that he was an honor student. His greatest thrill came when the people of Delaware chose him as their "All-State" quarterback. We are certain that Vinnie will always be the gentleman that he is now."

After Archmere, Vince enrolled at Drexel University where he played basketball and baseball. After graduation he played baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system, and

then served in the Korean War, stationed in the Far East. He played basketball and baseball in the 40th AAA in Japan.

Father Justin Diny, O.Praem. was at Archmere in 19431944, and returned to Archmere in 1946 as Headmaster for Vince’s senior year. Father Diny wrote to Vince in Japan on March 1, 1954, asking Vince if he was interested in coaching and teaching at Archmere. Vince responded on March 8, 1954, saying he was interested. Father Diny made a formal offer on March 19, 1954, saying: "The job is yours for two years if you wish. If you do the job I feel certain you will do, then it is yours for as long as you wish." Vince returned to Archmere in the Fall of 1954 as teacher of math and typing and as coach of football, basketball, and baseball.

In 1963, Vince became Athletic Director. The Class of 1964 dedicated their yearbook to Vince, saying in part: "There is one man whose contributions to us and to the school stand out above the others. This man is Mr. Filliben. ... In the classroom he has instructed many students in mathematics. On the basketball court and the baseball diamond he has given his players an example of good sportsmanship. At dances he has taught everyone the polka. ...This June will complete Mr. Filliben’s tenth year at Archmere. We thank him for what he has given and hope that in his next ten years he will be as successful as he has been in the past." Vince continued teaching at Archmere until June 1992, successful to the very last moment. In 1992, Vince was inducted as a charter member of the Archmere Sports Hall of Fame.

In 1985, Vince retired from coaching after 31 years, recognized by his peers as the state’s "Dean of Coaching."

At the Sports Banquet on May 28, 1985, Vince reminded the 500 guests in attendance of the motto by which he lived: "There is only one way to coast and that’s downhill." Vince also told the capacity crowd that coaching was never work but "a labor of love." Vince continued to teach, serve as Athletic Director, as a member of the state’s Athletic Association, and as a husband and father of VJ. ’78, Anne ’84, and Sean ’86.

When Vince announced his pending retirement in October 1991, he told Matt Zabitka of The News Journal: "I never really felt my job was work. I enjoyed it so much. I just hope I taught the kids something." On January 30, 2010, 200 of Vince’s former players gathered for the dedication of the Vincent J. Filliben ’47 Court in the Moglia Fieldhouse, just four days before Vince’s 80th birthday. On February 27,

2010, Vince wrote to Archmere’s Principal, Bill Doyle, and I: "Never did I realize when I entered Archmere Academy in 1943 as a freshman that the school would be my life’s work. I shall be forever grateful for my parents who gave me the opportunity to become an Archmere student. The Norbertine priests, lay teachers, and coaches gave me the foundation of my life’s values, which in turn made my life rich. My entire family is thankful for the most enjoyable lunch, speeches, 80th birthday cake, flowers, and basketball court dedication. The dedication day was one of the most remarkable days of my life. It has been a wonderful life. God bless you. Thank you. Vincent J. Filliben." Vince’s wife, Eleanor, added a PS: "Vince has been on cloud nine since the dedication. God bless you. Thank you. Ellie Filliben."

Vince died on June 22, 2015, at age 85. The obituary in The News Journal noted that Vince "was a man of strong faith and an active participant in the Church of the Holy Child where he served as lector, usher, and Eucharistic Minister."

Vince lived just off the parking lot of Holy Child, a very easy commute to church. However, on June 23rd the renovation of the interior of Holy Child Church commenced, and so Vince’s Funeral Mass was celebrated in the theatre of the Performing Arts Center at Archmere, a very familiar place to Vince - his "home away from home."

At the time of Vince’s death, John J. Jordan ’80, by then Archmere’s Principal, who had Vince for algebra as a freshman and who played basketball for Vince, told Kevin Tresolini of The News Journal: "Vince was very specific about things, whether it was algebra class or on the basketball court. He was a very structured, very organized guy. He always had a plan. You knew exactly what you were getting, whether it was the classroom or the gym."

In his note to the Archmere community in 2015, Dr. Michael Marinelli ’76, Headmaster, wrote: "Vincent Filliben ’47 was a devoted alumnus, teacher, coach, athletic director, and mentor to generations of students and colleagues at Archmere Academy. Dedicated to his work and his family, his thirty-nine-year career at the Academy ... may be best considered as one that has helped shape, define, and sustain the positive growth of the school through commitment and hard work over five decades." Of Vince, we say in his own words: "It has been a wonderful life. Thank you. God bless you."

Ed Dolphin ’04 Ordained

On April 6, 2024, Ed Dolphin ’04 was ordained at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart on the University of Notre Dame campus. A 2004 Archmere graduate, Father Dolphin’s journey has been a faithful one. Notre Dame freshman Joshua Johnson presented Deacon Ed at the April ordination ceremony, asserting that, soon-to-be Father Dolphin, faithfully served Dillon Hall as rector and that his weekly homilies delivered “profound insight on what God has to offer us in the moment. He preaches with wisdom and gentleness, his spiritual lessons stir within the soul a desire for God.” Father Dolphin’s impact on the Notre Dame students was palpable on his ordination weekend, with the students welcoming Ed’s family and joyously celebrating his calling. As a member of the Holy Cross order, Father Ed believes that the “religious community can serve in so many different ways.” Ed has served in

various ministries during his journey, including a summer in 2020 at the Andre House in Phoenix Arizona and this past summer helping in a parish in Austin Texas.

Father Ed’s journey has been marked by faith and diligence. Ed was born in Wilmington, Delaware, and attended St. Edmond’s Academy as a young boy. A member of the Holy Child parish, Ed was influenced by the parish priests whom he knew there. A 2004 Archmere graduate, Ed played football and worked on the facilities crew during his summers at Archmere. Theology teacher Mr. Burdziak taught Ed when he was a senior and worked with him at school on the grounds crew over the summers. Mr. Burdziak recalled he was quiet and reserved in class, but always attentive. “We had fun working together in the summer, cutting grass and painting the small gym. Ed had a quick wit and dry humor.”

Upon graduation, Ed attended Drexel University, studying information sciences and then worked for eight years as a software engineer. His call to the priesthood crystalized at a Mass at St. Agnes Parish in West Chester when he heard the reading from 1 Samuel 3, God’s calling to Samuel. “I heard that at Mass, and all of a sudden, it was like ’Oh, that call is for me,’” Ed’s priestly vocation is grounded in Samuel’s response, “Speak, your servant is listening.”

Ed returned for his recent 20th Archmere reunion in October, concelebrating Mass with Father McLaughlin and Monsignor Ed Padazinski ’74 and then celebrating with his class in the Patio. Ed’s affection for Archmere and Notre Dame speaks to his sense of community, and a shared connection. “I think there is an instant connection shared by alums from Archmere and Notre Dame. Alumni from 30 years ago and current students can connect their experiences.” As the current Rector at Dillon Hall, Ed loves working with students, welcoming them, and guiding them in their spiritual journeys. “Students at both schools are not just taught; they are genuinely looked after and cared for by dedicated faculty and staff.”

Ed’s love of Archmere runs deep, as does his mission of working with young people. In comparing his college and high school, Ed believes both communities have a sense of enchantment: “There is more than meets the eye. There is a sense of lore, history, and magic that keeps people coming back. I think that both schools’ Catholic mission helps form their students to be more aware of God’s presence in their lives.” Father Ed’s calling will continue to lead his students as they journey together, the Lord continuing to reveal himself as he did with Samuel, everpresent and listening.

Christopher Dougherty, Ph.D. ’85 Inaugurated as the Eighth President of Madonna University

“The Lord has done great things for us and we are filled with joy!” (Psalm 126:3) This powerful affirmation of God’s goodness by the psalmist was the theme for Mission Week at Madonna University, an institution of higher learning founded by the Felecian Sisters of North America. The Sisters, who take their charism from Saint Francis of Assisi, arrived in the United States 150 years ago this fall, coming as missionaries from Poland to tend to the needs of the Polish immigrants who settled in the Michigan area. I had the pleasure of attending the inauguration festivities for Dr. Christopher Dougherty ’85, who was installed as the 8th President of the University, fittingly as part of the University’s Mission Week celebration. I have known Chris since his senior year at Archmere in 1984. This was the year I began working at Archmere as the Director of Development and Public Relations. I remember him as being mature and always interested in the workings of the school. Later, after his graduation from Saint Joseph University, I invited him to consider working at Archmere, but Chris had other educational plans to pursue a Master’s Degree at the University of Pennsylvania that would lead to a career in higher education.

Through the years, Chris always kept in touch with Archmere. When I was installed as Headmaster of Archmere in 2010, Chris attended the Mass and installation ceremony in academic regalia, representing Rutgers University. A few years later, I asked Chris to consider a nomination for the Board of Trustees of Archmere, which he accepted. Chris joined the Board in 2015 while he was Provost and Vice President for Student and Academic Affairs at Rosemont College. After one year, he chaired the Advancement Committee and two years later became Board Chair. Chris was named Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty at Chestnut Hill College in 2017. He was

elected Chair of Archmere’s Board of Trustees one year later. His three-year term coincided with the pandemic, during which he was an amazing support to me and the rest of the Academy’s leadership with his calm and even approach, always grounded in the “data.” Interestingly, at the celebratory dinner, colleagues from Rosemont and Chestnut Hill Colleges made it a point in their pre-dinner remarks that Chris likes data!

Chris made me feel like a part of the family during my visit, as did the rest of his family: Joanne, his wife; Isabelle and Madeline, his daughters; Carole, his mother; and Jason, his brother. There were also a number of Felician sisters present, along with the University’s administration and staff, who were warm and welcoming. As I shared with the sisters, “radical hospitality” apparently is not exclusive to the Norbertines. I even met a Sister of Saint Joseph from the community in Chestnut Hill who taught at my parish grade school, Saint Helena School in Wilmington, during the years I was a student there. Though I did not have her as a teacher, we shared a litany of sisters’ names who taught me that we both knew. It was a nostalgic moment that I did not expect to take place in Livonia, Michigan.

Friday before Homecoming weekend was filled with activities, beginning with Mass in the Sisters’ Chapel (more like a cathedral in size and beauty) on the University campus celebrated by Most Rev. Arturo Cepeda, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Detroit. Mass was followed by brunch, an inauguration ceremony, and a celebratory dinner later that evening. The evening before, Chris and Joanne hosted a reception in their home for all of us traveling from various parts of the country.

When it was time to say goodbye, Chris, in his usual thoughtful way, shared that he marked December 22 on his calendar, hopeful to participate in the Archmere Alumni Mastersingers annual concert program, “Coming Home for Christmas.” Once at Auk, always an Auk, even though a part of Chris will always be a Dragon, Hawk, Raven, Griffin, and now, a Crusader.

After Chris invited me to attend the inauguration events, he asked if I would offer a few remarks on behalf of the President’s colleagues. I was humbled and honored to deliver a brief reflection on this important milestone for Chris, his family, and the University. On behalf of the Archmere Academy community, especially as fellow educators and former teachers, I congratulate Dr. Dougherty, with best wishes and prayers for him, his family, and the Madonna University community.

Students Travel to Taiwan

The cultural and language exchange trip to Taiwan was an incredible journey of exploration and connection. Seven students from Archmere embarked on a transformative experience, immersing themselves in the rich tapestry of Taiwanese culture and Mandarin Chinese language from June 4th to June 18th. Collaborating closely with Yanping High School in Taipei and various local communities, our students engaged in activities aimed at deepening their understanding of Taiwanese culture and establishing meaningful connections with their Taiwanese peers. From the hustle and bustle of urban Taipei to the tranquil landscapes of the island’s western regions, they embraced the diverse linguistic and cultural landscapes of Taiwan. The students were supervised by Mandarin Chinese language teacher, Ms. Yachi Yu.

Exploring traditional arts, indulging in local cuisine, and participating in community events granted them firsthand insights into Taiwan’s rich heritage. Their journey was not merely about language and culture; it was a profound exploration that broadened their perspectives and deepened their appreciation for global interconnectedness. As they returned home, they brought back cherished memories and a deeper understanding of international collaboration and understanding. This journey was a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the ability to foster meaningful connections across borders. It served as a reminder of the beauty found in diversity and the importance of embracing different cultures. May their experiences continue to inspire others to seek out opportunities for cross-cultural understanding and collaboration.

"We were welcomed happily and taken out to explore. Those adventures we had that day didn’t end because we experienced something new and fun every day. Our host families welcomed us with warmth and enthusiasm. Hanging out with my family and the new friends I made throughout the trip was some of my best memories."

- Nyla Nkemta ’27

"My visit to Taiwan was truly unforgettable. From immersing myself in the diverse cultures, trying various local cuisines, and witnessing traditional customs to strolling through the vibrant night markets and admiring the lush green mountains, picking tea leaves, and making our tea, every moment was exciting."

Archmere’s New Experiential Learning Class

This year, Archmere introduced a brand new “Experiential Learning” class, taught by full-time Learning Specialist, Ms. Lauren Walton. The Science of Everything class was developed to help students explore aspects of emotional, mental, and physical wellness in order to learn how to flourish. Students read, discuss, and present concepts from current research and non-fiction texts about human flourishing and strategies for living purposeful lives as well as engage in practices to improve mental and emotional wellness.

The Science of Everything is not *literally* about the science of everything: instead, it is a class designed to explore insights from selected social sciences (e.g. the science of human flourishing, the science of learning, etc.) and help students put evidence-based principles into practice to mindfully craft purposeful and fulfilling lives in the short- and long-term.

With a combination of theory (reading and engaging with academic research and scholarship using a critical thinking lens) and practice (mindfulness practice, celebrating awe, gratitude, flow, play, positive relationships, and agency, cultivating good habits and resilient mindsets, learning how to learn, engaging in inquiry into a student-choice "science," and designing/conducting local research studies here at Archmere), students can - in the words of Maya Angelou - "know better" and strive to "do better" in school settings, in personal interactions, and in communities where they can make a meaningful impact. The class concludes with an opportunity to dive deep into a subject of choice using a text, online resource, body of research, etc. and use it to spark a passion project or craft a learning portfolio.

About Ms. Lauren Walton:

After earning a degree in Business Administration from SUNY Geneseo, Lauren began her career in business. Although she spent four rewarding years working in Fortune 500 companies, she decided to be adventurous and indulge an interest in international travel that had blossomed when she studied abroad at Oxford University as an undergraduate. Lauren bought a one-way ticket to Greece in 2007, where she earned a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) certificate to teach English overseas. Lauren taught in China and South Korea for several years before returning to the U.S. to earn a graduate degree in education from The University of Pennsylvania. She has been an ESL (English as a Second Language) Director, AP teacher, Director of College Counseling, and Reading/Learning Specialist at independent and charter schools in Buffalo, NY, and the greater Philadelphia area for over a decade. Ms. Walton developed an interest in MBE (Mind, Brain, Education) science and will delightedly talk your ear off about educational neuroscience and social-emotional learning. She brings a wealth of knowledge and curiosity about research-based, innovative educational practices to empower students with effective learning strategies that help them develop self-efficacy.

The officials of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation used their high scores on the PSAT’s, taken in their junior year, as an initial screen for program entrants. Only 16,000 students (of approximately 1.3 million) in about 21,000 high schools entered the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2023 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT), which served as an initial screen of program entrants.

To be considered for a National Merit Scholarship, Semifinalists must advance to Finalist standing in the competition. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors.

Arlene, Brianna, and Grace have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 6,870 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $26 million that will be offered next spring. To become a Finalist, the three Archmere Semifinalists and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, in which they provide information about the Semifinalist’s academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. A Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT or ACT scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test.

Finalists will be announced in late February and National Merit Scholarship winners of 2025 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July. These scholarship recipients will join more than 382,000 other distinguished young people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

In addition, Ivy Adams ’25, Caileigh Crane ’25, Benjamin Li ’25, Zimo Liu ’25, Eva Messamore ’25, and Samuel Ryan ’25 were among the top 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT and will receive the recognition of being named National Merit Commended Students.

Report on the State of the Academy

Our new year school year begins with hope and enthusiasm as we look forward to another successful fundraising year, and as we close out our Performing Arts Campaign (PAC). In Advancement, the 2023-24 fiscal year presented the challenge of growing our Archmere Annual Fund giving while also fundraising for the renovation of the 1983 Theater building. Once again, it proved to be a year of growth and optimism. The Archmere Fund exceeded the $550,000 goal, totaling $554,185 in annual unrestricted giving. Our parent clubs continue to be instrumental in the school’s success, raising $100,000 over the course of the year, and our Alumni Association total donations raised $26,124 ($16,124 to the Archmere Fund, $5,000 to the Legacy Scholarship Fund, and $5,000 to the PAC on a $25,000 five-year pledge). We continue to be a community of generosity and of gratitude. Our engaged parents, past parents, alumni, and friends embody the Archmere spirit of giving back. Your generosity speaks to the essence of the Auk community, a community of faith and friendship, of humor and help.

Our school theme this year focuses on the “Archmere story.” We are collectively the stories that we will live out here, day to day, on the campus. Those narratives define the Norbertine mission established here over 90 years ago. Your commitment as a member of the community speaks to sustaining this unique and welcoming culture. With your help, we will continue to create the stories that matter in the lives of the students, faculty, and parents. Our mission remains the same: educating young men and women in the spirit of St. Norbert, a spirit that acknowledges academic excellence and faith community of inclusion. Your help is imperative for our ongoing success. The Archmere Fund directly supports our school operations and programming, as well as scholarship and assistance programs essential for making the school accessible to a wide variety of families.

In the following pages and online*, you will see statistics about the generosity of our donors, along with listings of specific donors as well as those who have chosen to support the Archmere community through planned giving. These numbers and lists are inspiring examples of the Archmere community stepping up in the Spirit of St. Norbert.

I am asking you to contribute to our fundraising efforts for this fiscal year, 2024-25. I have appealed to the Archmere Board of Trustees, to our devoted faculty and staff, and to our current parents; your participation is equally important as we give back to a community that is life-changing. We have provided a QR below as well as an envelope to make the process simple and direct. I ask that you consider a gift to this special place. As always, I am deeply grateful. Your commitment to the school ensures our future success.

A Lasting Legacy: Robert G. Coyle ’65 Leaves a Remarkable Gift to Archmere Academy

Last spring, Archmere Academy received an unexpected yet deeply meaningful gift from alumnus Robert G. Coyle, a member of the Class of 1965. Bob passed away on March 17, 2023, in Holmes, Pennsylvania, leaving his estate to Archmere as his sole beneficiary. Though we had not known of his intentions, his planned gift serves as a powerful reminder of the profound impact Archmere can have on its students, sometimes in ways we may never fully realize.

Bob’s journey to Archmere was unique. He began high school at Montfort Prep Seminary (a Catholic school for young men intending to enter the priesthood) in Bayshore, New York, then transferred to St. James High School in Chester, Pennsylvania, for his sophomore and junior years. He joined the Archmere community for his senior year, graduating with the Class of 1965, before attending St. Joseph’s University. Bob spent his career working for the Social Security Administration, ensuring the well-being of countless individuals through his service.

Though his time at Archmere was brief, the school left a lasting impression on him. By including Archmere Academy in his estate plans, Bob demonstrated the power of planned giving. His generous gift ensures that future generations of students will benefit from the same values and education that shaped his life.

In recognition of Bob’s transformative gift, Archmere Academy will name the Robert G. Coyle Reference Center in the St. Norbert Hall Learning Commons in his honor. This space will serve as a place where students gather to collaborate, study, and grow—continuing Bob’s legacy of service and support for the Archmere community.

Planned gifts like Bob’s are essential to Archmere’s financial future, providing the resources necessary to uphold the school’s mission of educating students in a rigorous academic environment rooted in its Catholic, Norbertine faith and values. Often, these gifts arrive unexpectedly, but they reflect the deep connections that alumni feel with Archmere.

Bob’s decision to make Archmere his sole beneficiary, even though the Academy was unaware of his plans, speaks to the lasting impact the school had on him. His quiet generosity and foresight will ensure that Archmere’s tradition of excellence continues for years to come.

Archmere is profoundly grateful for Bob’s planned gift, which will support our mission and help us continue to inspire and educate students for years to come. His legacy reminds us that every planned gift—no matter when or how it is given—makes a lasting difference. In remembering Bob Coyle ’65, we celebrate a life lived in service to others, and a gift that will benefit the entire Archmere community.

Larry Osborne In Memoriam

I who made the stars of night, I will make their darkness bright. Who will bear my light to them? Whom shall I send?

Refrain:

Here I am Lord. Is it I, lord? I have heard you calling in the night. I will go lord, if you lead me. I will hold your people in my heart.

Michael Johnson 1984-2024

Co-Director, Office of Student Life and Culture, Math Teacher

Mike Johnson always incorporated the hymn, “Here I am, Lord,” into the Installation Ceremony for Elected Members of Student Council. The hymn speaks to a Christ-like servant leadership, a theme that Mike implored his “StuCo” kids to explore and embody. In his numerous Kairos speeches, Mike often spoke about seeing God in others, a message

that always resonated with me, especially in a value-driven community filled with positive role models. My greatest hope is that Mike knew that it was in him that I most saw Christ. He breathed life into our five core values of community, respect, reverence, wisdom, and zeal, and was steadfast in holding others accountable for living our mission. Mike without a doubt made “darkness bright,” spreading his light and love over Archmere for 17 years. We will continue to hold his legacy in our minds and hearts.

“Mr. Johnson’s passion for Archmere was larger than life. Whether he was teaching a class, mentoring student council, or firing up a pep rally, his enthusiasm was infectious, instilling in each of us strong pride in our school. He made everyone feel a part of the Archmere community; though he might not have had you in class, he knew who you were and would greet you with a booming “Sup, squad!” Mr. Johnson had a profound impact, leaving Archmere better than he found it. We are all better people because of him.”

- Maya Shah ’23, former President of Student Council

"The motto of Saint Joseph’s Prep in Philadelphia, where Mike went to high school, is "For the greater glory of God." The motto of Villanova University, Mike’s alma mater, is "Truth, Unity, Love." Mike came to Archmere in 2007 well-equipped as a campus minister who united the campus, loved his students and colleagues, and was always truthful, doing all for the greater glory of God. Mike inspired reverence ("pietas") at Archmere through his Kairos talks on the Sacraments and God’s Friendship and his leadership of the Student Council."

- Father Joseph McLaughlin, O.Praem

“Michael Johnson embodied the spirit of Archmere Academy in every way. His unwavering enthusiasm and genuine respect for others created a vibrant community where every student felt valued. His zeal for teaching inspired countless young minds, instilling in us a reverence for learning and the wisdom to pursue our passions. Michael’s legacy will forever illuminate our hearts and halls. I am so grateful to have called him a mentor and friend.”

- Maura Corsini ’14

“Knowing Mike and working with him has been an honor for me. He has touched my life with his enthusiasm and energy. He inspired me to make Archmere the best it could be for all the kids. Our community will not be the same without him - but his memory will live on and on in all of us and all his students! In his Kairos speech, he would thank me for letting him transition to math, but the reality is that we are the ones who lucked out having him!”

- Vinita Lobo, Math Teacher

“It’s hard to think of someone on campus who displayed the core values of Archmere on a daily basis. I watched Mike deal with students who found themselves in hot water. The conversations were grounded in respect and the ideals of our community. Everything Mike did he did with zealwhether it was discipline reflections with students or some crazy math I didn’t understand. Most importantly, it’s pretty clear to us, Mike did this because in his heart he revered the students and community of Archmere.”
