The Archmerean “We Are All On The Same Journey”
Volume LXXX Fall 2014
The Archmerean
“We Are All On The Same Journey” The cover of this issue is a photograph of The Patio taken by Chair of the Archmere Academy Art Department, Ms. Jody Hoffman, using High-Dynamic-Range (HDR) technique. “HDR is a set of techniques in exposure to get the greatest dynamic range of luminosity possible. It is achieved by capturing and then combining different exposures of the exact same image,” says Jody. In her photography classes, Jody teaches her students about the importance of taking several shots of a scene and shows them how bracketing an image can allow you to create the perfect exposure. Like Jody’s work of art, the beauty – the success – of Archmere Academy relies on a combination of perspectives. The viewpoints and talents of our students, faculty, alumni, parents, and friends are essential to the fulfillment and furthering of the Academy’s mission. We have a shared purpose and a shared journey.

A Message From the Headmaster A Message from the Headmaster: “We Are All on the Same Journey”
Dear Archmere Community: Anything really worthwhile takes hard work and time. That’s the philosophy my depression-era parents taught me, and I feel certain that has been the belief of Archmere’s leadership – board, administration, faculty and staff – over the last 82 years. Commitment to that belief has made Archmere a top-flight college preparatory school, rooted in Catholic Norbertine values and traditions. Much of what we have been able to accomplish in the last school year is due to the strong foundation laid by our predecessors, combined with the creativity, energy, and innovation of our current Archmere community. I am grateful to the tremendous support of so many recognized in this edition of the Archmerean, and I am excited to share with you plans for the upcoming school year. Thank you for taking this journey with us. The future of Archmere is very bright! In February of 2014, on the Feast of the Presentation, the Oratory in Saint Norbert Hall was dedicated to Mary of the Immaculate. This coming school year, the installation of a three-part icon, created by artist, Peter Pearson, entitled “Communion of Saints” will be installed. Michael A. Marinelli, Ed.D. ’76 The work will depict the unique Norbertine charism – past and present – and be a wonderful teaching tool for our students and Archmere community. The recently completed Meditation Garden with the Stations of the Cross will receive in the fall the first phase of a large outdoor art installation. Mrs. Jody Hoffman, Art Department Chair, working with art students, has developed a design executed in glass time based on the Fabonacci Sequence that will cover three large wall spaces adjacent to the Science Center overlooking the Meditation Garden. Thanks to the Mothers’ Guild and Fathers’ Club for assisting with the funding for the Oratory and Meditation Garden art works. The Patio continues to be renovated and re-engaged in the daily life of the school. This spring, the Finance Office moved to the second floor of The Patio, and this summer, the former bowling alley and lounge in the basement have been renovated for student use. In addition, new window wells and a new drainage system were installed along the south wall of The Patio to make the entire basement “water-free” and dry, so that renovations of other spaces on the lower level of the Patio can take place in the coming years. Additional minor renovations and preparation happened on campus this summer to ready the campus for the 143 freshman that we welcome to Archmere’s Class of 2018 – the second largest class in the history of Archmere. Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Archmere community coordinated by our Admissions Staff, we have had considerable interest in the Academy, so much so that we have been unable to accept a number of students in our waiting pool this year. The freshman class’ average test score was two points higher than the year before! These freshmen, and all of our returning students, will enjoy an upgrade to the 1:1 laptop program. The Academy’s new lease arrangement, negotitated by Mr. Carl Campion, Director of Technology, and Mr. John Cirillo, Director of Finance, brought Mac Book Airs to campus. 4
Our students will also have the opportunity to engage in vibrant curriculum and activity choices, including an expanded string program, strengthened by a partnership with the Music School of Delaware and the University of Delaware. To maintain our strong academic program, we continue to invest in our faculty and staff. Over the last two years, we have implemented a comprehensive performance evaluation program, which has become the foundation for the introduction of a merit-based compensation program. These two initiatives are creating a learning community that is based on best practices and excellence, supportive of and rewarding innovation, creativity, and growth, as well as hard work and diligence. As with any organization, we must say “good-bye” to members of the community who have been with us for a while and are ready to “retire” or move on to other challenges. Combined with the increased school enrollment, these transitions have allowed us to welcome several new faculty and staff members to Archmere. We welcome new faculty and staff members: • Mr. Kyle Bardeer, History Teacher • Mrs. Lisa Beatson, Science/Math Teacher • Mr. Chris Boehm, Director of College Couneling • Mrs. Joyce Campion, Reading Specialist/Learning Support Specialist • Ms. Katie Eissler, French Teacher • Ms. Ainsley Hertrich ’05, Development & Alumni Relations Coordinator • Ms. Kathryn Hudson, Religion Teacher • Mrs. Karen Linton, English Teacher/Learning Support Specialist • Mr. Thomas Mengers ’10, Religion Teacher • Ms. Francesca Pileggi, Guidance Counselor • Ms. Catherine Souza, Associate Director of College Counseling
As we all know, the Archmere experience does not end with graduation. Our vibrant alumni community is becoming more and more engaged through the efforts of the revamped Alumni Council, chaired by Michael Hare ’79. The events of the Association this year, including the Golf Outing and the Sports Hall of Fame Banquet, generated record attendance and funds that supported the Alumni Legacy Scholarship Fund and the Archmere Athletic Program respectively. In addition, individual classes have initiated reunions and legacy scholarship funds, including the classes of 1963, 1979, and 1983. We also continue to add members to the class representative list – the key to building community and support for the Academy and one another as alumni. Within the last year, we have implemented a program as a result of a comprehensive campus energy audit of all of our buildings conducted by Seiberlich-Trane. The program of Direct Digital Controls has given our facilities staff the ability to regulate heating and cooling in all rooms of Saint Norbert Hall, Science Center, Student Life Center, Performing Arts Center, and Field House from a laptop computer screen or iPhone. The computerized system is generating energy efficiency annually such that the cost of installation will be recovered over a maximum of six years of energy savings or less. We have begun an exploratory project, based on a feasibility study conducted last year, regarding renovations to Saint Norbert Hall and endowment growth. Renovations to Saint Norbert Hall would bring operational efficiencies, as well as enhanced learning spaces for students who spend the majority of their day in classes held in the building. These major renovations are being studied while other capital projects continue to be completed, including the replacement of all the theatre stage curtains and inspection and repair of all the stage rigging, among other capital projects that keep our facilities staff busy year round. Growing our endowment will help us become less tuition dependent and also allow us to insure that we maintain and grow the diversity of our school community.

As you will note from the Honor Roll of Donors, the 2013-14 fiscal year has been another record-breaking fund raising year for Archmere, thanks to the support of so many benefactors and volunteers and the organizational approach and follow through of our capable staff. Similarly, our enrollment is strong and interest in Archmere from a wide geographic footprint continues to grow. Our website activity increases each year, as does our social media presence, and most importantly, positive word-of-mouth endorsements about Archmere to prospective families. In his book, “Aimer Comme Dieu Nous Aime” (To Love as God Loves Us), Most Rev. Francois-Marie Humann, O.Praem., Abbot of Mondaye Abbey, states “The foundation and beginning of all spiritual life is the acknowledgment by man of his identity as a spiritual creature. Even if the entire existence is not enough (for him) to discover this mystery, entrance into a real relationship with God can do that (in an instant) . . . in his desire, in his quest for happiness, man recognizes, even obscurely, that he is not at the source of his search, but he receives it from another.” (p.73) We are all on the same journey; to know, love, and serve God. The important work we accomplish at Archmere as a faith community is to offer a place where our families can enter “into a real relationship with God.” Our pathway to our Creator has been shaped by our Norbertine spiritual tradition, and it continues to grow and evolve with hard work and patience by all those who share in it and embrace it. I am privileged to be a part of this worthwhile work and to share it with all of you. Sincerely,
“We are all on the same journey; to know, love and serve God.”

Your Opinion Matters: Feasibility Planning Study for Archmere Academy
Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 5: Financial Sustainability Feasibility Planning Study Archmere’s enduring success has always been rooted in the collective commitment, resourcefulness, and wisdom of the Archmere community. So, to help prioritize the Academy’s needs and determine short- and long-term steps in achieving the school’s strategic plan, a national fundraising consulting firm with broad Catholic and independent school experience was retained to conduct a comprehensive Feasibility and Planning Study. The effort evaluated $20 million in needs for improvements to St. Norbert Hall, the Performing Arts Center, the Manor and Patio, as well as for endowment growth. Seventy-six (76) personal discussions were conducted and an e-survey generated 661 responses from current and past Board members, graduates, parents, parents of alumni, faculty and staff, foundation executives and other friends of Archmere. Findings and recommendations include:
SUMMARY FINDINGS • Seventy-nine percent (79%) of participants believe Archmere Academy should address the highest ranked priorities now. • Nearly all (97%) study participants would be willing to financially support these initiatives. • Almost every (99%) participant rated Archmere Academy as “very positive” or “positive.” • The most often cited strengths were: academics; headmaster; beautiful campus facilities; reputation; faculty; sense of community; and the Academy’s standing as a faith- and values-based institution.
RECOMMENDATIONS AND NEXT STEPS The Study concluded that support is strong for Archmere’s needs and that the Academy should move forward with a comprehensive effort for capital, endowment, and annual support priorities. As a result, Archmere Academy is now in the formative planning stages of a comprehensive initiative to achieve these goals. We look forward to sharing more news about these plans in the near future!
Thank you for your support! 7
New Courses Offer Creative Opportunities
Archmere’s curriculum is always evolving to keep up with best practices in education and offer new opportunities for students to develop thier talents. This past year, the Academy’s academic leadership introduced a few especcially unique and challenging curricular changes, including: a String Ensemble Program, Chinese Program, and an App Development Course. The new String Ensemble Program marks the first time in the school’s history that the Music Department has offered instrumental instruction in an ensemble setting, independent of the traditional Concert Band. “Because there is not literature for strings inside a concert band setting, string programs are most often separate, unless you have an orchestra in addition to the band program,” says Director of Instrumental Music, Mr. Damian Demnicki ’86. The recently announced partnership between Archmere, The Music School of Delaware, and Serafin String Quartet aims to spark Members of the Chinese Club gathered to celebrate the Chinese New Year. From ledt to right: Elizabeth Baker ’14 , Kurt Clemens’15, student interest and help develop the String Ensemble Program in Maggie Maurer ’15, Meibin Chen ’15 , Anna South ’15, Kayla the coming years, from its inaugural five string players. If successful, Crowder ’16. Kerry Ringiewicz ’14 , Katie Maurer ’15, Kayla discussion of a large-scale orchestral expansion program may lay in Jurchak ’15 , Barbara Boylan ’16 and Ms, Kezhan Young. the future for the Music Department. Similar to the String Ensemble Program, the addition of Chinese to the World Languages and Cultures Department also marks a historically significant moment for the school, which traditionally offered only Western foreign language courses to its students. “Adding Chinese to the department undoubtedly indicates a paradigm shift from the languages that have been taught in the US historically,” says World Languages and Cultures Department Chair, Mrs. Leah Lightcap. “Eastern languages are becoming more prominent in the American world language curriculum, and we are excited to be modernizing our curriculum in that regard as well. The social and economic value of being proficient in Chinese and its dialect is undeniable.” Ms. Kezhen Yang, a 2013 graduate from Jinan University in China, was hired last summer to teach the eight students, including one senior, enrolled in the first-year Chinese course. Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 2: Best Practices in Learning “At the introductory level, we focus primarily on the linguistic essentials of the language, though culture is present in context as well,” says Ms. Yang. “We present and discuss cultural celebrations, and students are able to use their experience in Western culture to make comparisons. It is common for Westerners to be very unaccustomed to Eastern cultural standards, yet it is more and more crucial that they do.” Mrs. Lightcap echoes Ms. Yang, emphasizing the importance of being culturally sensitive and knowledgeable in today’s world. “A goal of our department is to help students to become more comfortable in foreign environments and cultures,” she says. “Perhaps most importantly, the department continues evolving and expanding because it is very important that Archmere students are socially and culturally conscious individuals who value difference.” The World Languages and Cultures Department plans to offer a complete Chinese program, levels one to A.P., adding one level of study each year. A major reason for the growing popularity and accessibility of Eastern languages and cultures is the emergence of a global community, connected through evolving digital technologies. Archmere students with a knack for tech side of things have the opportunity to engage hands-on in this same process of technological innovation by taking courses offered by the Computer Science Department, in particular the new App Development course. “A typical unit will consist of a demonstration of how and why to implement a feature with some minor tasks involving customization to demonstrate understanding,” says Computer Science teacher Mr. Jared Campbell. “This is then followed up with a major project that involves creative input from the student, sometimes in collaboration and other times individually. My favorite part about this layout is that students can go in so many directions.” Some students have even taken on projects outside of the classroom, like the tech savvy team that developed the concept for a mobile application to locate family members and friends in the event of a natural disaster. Christian Kraft ’15, Gregory McCord ’16, Joseph Spall ’16, Andrew Hurst ’15 and Nicholas McIntyre ’15 won “Best in State” in the Verizon Innovative App Challenge for their “coNextGen” app. The project-based curriculum also creates an classroom atmosphere that resembles a college seminar, where students collaborate in problem-solving, giving and taking advice from each other. Mr. Campbell says this type of structured, yet very open-ended instruction is invaluable for students’ development. “It teaches students how to explore the building materials of the digital world around them,” he says. “Regurgitating other people’s analyses and making The “coNextGen” app development team, posing in The Patio for the New Journal decisions based on analogies can only get a person article on their “Best in State” win. 2014 Alumnus of the Year
Robert E. Shields ’60 During the 2014 commencement exercises for Archmere Academy, alumnus Robert E. Shields ’60 received the Alumnus of the Year Award. Spending his early childhood in Claymont, Delaware, just a few blocks from Archmere’s campus, and raised in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, Bob earned a full scholarship to attend Archmere, awarded by then headmaster, Father Justin E. Diny, O.Praem. He first walked through Archmere’s doors as a student in the fall of 1956. A member of the class of 1960, Bob fondly recalls riding on John O’Meara’s school bus each day, and participating in the Archmere forensics team under then faculty member Dan Carroll. In forensics, as in academics, he excelled at Archmere – earning top honors in the championship of the National Catholic Forensics League during both his junior and senior years. A leader among his peers, he was president of his class in sophomore, junior and senior years, and received the salutatorian, history and Archmere medals at graduation. Mr. Robert E. Shields ’60 Bob comments that his time at Archmere had more of an impact on him than any of the other educational institutions he attended throughout his lifetime, largely in part to the strong role models he found in his Archmere teachers, who inspired and strengthened the values he still upholds today.
After graduating from Archmere, Bob attended the College of the Holy Cross on full scholarship, and went on to attend New York University School of Law, where he was a Root-Tilden-Kern scholar and executive editor of Law Review. He graduated cum laude in 1967. He began a successful legal career at Drinker Biddle & Reath, LLC in 1968, being named a managing partner in 1974. He served as general counsel to the Phoenix Steel Corporation, Vice Chair of Title 15 Committee of the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and an associate draftsman of the Pennsylvania Business Corporation Law of 1988. He is the author of two securities handbooks and a contributing author to chapters of various law books and a life member of the American Law Institute. Bob resides in Wayne, Pennsylvania with his wife of 47 years, Mary K, and is the father of four children, Christopher, David, Kevin, and Kathleen ’97, and the grandfather of six. While his career required him to travel frequently, particularly after he left Drinker Biddle to join private equity firm Questor Management Company and its sister organization AlixPartners LLP in 1995, Bob stayed connected to Archmere, maintaining friendships with many of his classmates over the years. Through his parents, who were parishioners of Saint Norbert Church in Paoli, and frequent visitors to Daylesford Abbey, he also maintained strong ties to the Norbertine community. In 1992, Bob became a member of Archmere’s Board of Trustees and served as Chair of the Long Range Planning Committee. He was instrumental in assisting Archmere and the Norbertines in reconciling the governing issues that 14
arose in the early 2000’s, and helped to lead the implementation of a self-perpetuating board that assured the school’s independence and established the governing structure that administers the school’s current operations. In 2010, Bob was asked to assume the role of Board Chair. Under his terms as Board Chair, he led the school in expanding its marketing efforts, raising enrollment and fundraising sights, creating the Archmere Trust to ensure financial sustainability, and developing the 2012 Strategic Plan for Archmere. Having completed his last term on June 30, 2014, Bob leaves the board for a second time after eleven years of service over the span of three decades. To say that the 2014 Alumnus of the Year’s contributions to Archmere as a student, alumnus, parent, trustee, community leader and mentor are significant would be an understatement. Bob has shaped a legacy over seven decades that has altered most positively the trajectory of Archmere’s future, ensuring the school remains rooted in its Catholic Norbertine values, while continuously meeting

the challenge of being the premier academic institution in the region. The Archmere community is grateful for his leadership as Board Chair, and his unwavering loyalty and deep commitment to Archmere through the decades, exemplifying true service and devotion to the Academy’s mission and heritage.

Opportunities to Get Involved Alumni Class Representatives are selected from each graduated glass to serve as the link between Archmere and their classmates by helping to communicate what’s happening on campus, promote alumni events, and help Archmere communicate with alumni by updating contact information. Class reps are invited to campus twice a year a social briefing by school leaders where they have the opportunity to share their questions and/or concerns on behalf of their graduated class. Alumni Committee Members serve as committee volunteers, and have the opportunity to reconnect with long lost friends as well as influence the strategic direction of Archmere’s alumni programming in their specific area of interest. Chaired by an elected member of the Alumni Council, the alumni committees offer multiple ways for alumni to make an impact and get involved: Class Representatives Committee

AUK Talks Speaker Series Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 4: Alumni Engagement “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say: we did it ourselves” —Lao Tzu
Archmere Academy principal John Jordan’s love of “TED Talks” and the Alumni Association’s desire for more networking opportunities led to the start of a great new series in The Patio this past school year. The AUK Talk Speaker Series, launched in January of 2014, offered thought-provoking speakers and networking opportunities for the Archmere community. The events, held on January 16 and May 20, were the first formal programming of the Archmere Academy Alumni Association’s Professional Development and Networking Committee, in collaboration with the Academy. The series adopted the style of the popular and innovative TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) conference talks, which give speakers a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in an engaging way, inspiring cross-industry discussions on a variety of topics. AUK Talks’ first four speakers focused on “ Thoughts on Leadership.” The January event featured former teacher, coach, admissions director, and principal of Archmere Academy, Paul Pomeroy Jr. and Archmere parent and President & CEO of W.L. Gore & Associates, Terri R. Kelly, as speakers. The second series, held in May, featured Erin Arvedlund ’88, Author & Financial Reporter, and Patrick Dentinger, President & CEO of Absorption Systems and Archmere parent.
Mr. Paul Pomeroy, Jr. shares his “Thoughts on Leadership” at the January 2014 event.
Before and after the speaker portions of the events, Archmere alumni and parents in attendance enjoyed a continental breakfast and a chance to network with fellow Auks. Increasing networking opportunities was one of the goals of the Alumni Association this past year, after members saw the incredible value of making connections within the Archmere community. “In my 22-year business career, whenever I have bumped into other Archmere alums, I have always found them serious, hard-working and successful. Just the sort of people you would want in your network,” says John J. Nowaczyk ’87, Chair of the Professional Development Committee. “And they are usually enthusiastic about networking with fellow Auks. You’ve earned membership in this great community – you should take advantage.”
Alumni and parents network at the January 2014 AUK Talk event.
The AUK Talk Speaker Series, which is exclusive to Archmere parents and alumni, will continue this year. The first event in the 2014-2015 series will be on Tuesday, November 4 in The Patio and will feature Dr. Carolyn Woo, President and CEO of Catholic Relief Services, former Dean of the Mendoza School of Business at Notre Dame University and wife of alumnus Dr. David Bartkus ’66.

Outstanding Seniors - Class of 2014 Valedictorian
On June 1, 2014, the 127 members of the Class of 2014 joined the community of over 5,800 alumni around the world. Surely, these students will go on to make their mark in college and beyond. Among this impressive group are this year’s valedictorian, Jonathan Lobo ’14, and salutatorian, Zixin Cao ’14.
Class of 2014 Valedictorian, Jonathan Lobo “I lost my entire wallet at Archmere’s after prom, and for the past two weeks, I’ve had an empty wallet filled with nothing but a license. But I’ve gotten over it, and my parents are starting to. If there’s one thing I’ve realized while at Archmere, it’s that money and Jonathan Lobo ’14 material possessions even my license - are all replaceable. People and memories are not. And I will never forget the people I’ve met and memories I’ve made at Archmere. My wallet of memories is full to the brim.” This was how Jonathan Lobo began his valedictory address, and his farewell to a place he called his second home. As a student at Archmere, Jonathan excelled academically — awarded the Technology Medal and certificates in Spanish, English, Mathematics, and Computer Science at commencement. He was named an A.P. Scholar with Distinction, a US Presidential Scholar candidate from Delaware, as well as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. He was also a member of the National Honors Society, Science National Honor Society, and Spanish National Honor Society. In addition to Jonathan’s numerous curricular accolades, he was actively involved in campus ministry as a Kairos retreat leader and Eucharistic minister. He was one of 39 students to be the first Archmere group to attend the St. Norbert Leadership Corps program last June. During his valedictory speech, he expressed sincere

gratitude toward his teachers, among them his mother, Mathematics Department Chair, Vinita Lobo. “Thank you for pushing us to our limits in the classroom, for cheering us on relentlessly on the athletic fields, for nagging us to finish our college applications. Thank you for believing in us when we may not have believed in ourselves.” After thanking his teachers and mentors, Jonathan turned to his classmates, leaving them with these powerful closing remarks: “The road ahead will not always be easy, and there will certainly be struggles and setbacks. But among other things, our time here at Archmere has taught us resilience. Hopefully, we can all remember the feeling of community and belonging we felt at Archmere, and here on this night, and strive to make that sense of community a reality, wherever we go.” Next year, Jonathan is headed to the University of

Outstanding Seniors - Class of 2014 Salutatorian
Class of 2014
Class of 2014 Salutatorian, Zixin Cao
During her time as a student at Archmere, Class of 2014 Salutatorian, Zixin Cao was always up for the challenge. Determined in her academic pursuits, she enrolled in a total of 11 A.P. courses. Outside the classroom, she devoted much of her free time to extracurricular activities and clubs. But perhaps most importantly, Zixin led her fellow classmates by example, building lasting relationships with her peers and teachers that were not simply conditional upon her own personal successes or goals, though she enjoyed many.
She said she is particularly grateful to Mrs. LoMonaco and Mrs. Walsh for pouring their time and efforts into Mock Trial, and inspiring her to pursue a career as a lawyer.
“Like Mr. Jordan always says, this is a great place to be,” Zixin said in her salutatory address. “I would even say that it’s the best place to be. It’s a place where trying new sports and starting new clubs is encouraged, where mistakes aren’t feared, and where God had planned for all of us to be these four years.”
In addition to Mock Trial, Zixin was involved in Science Zixin Cao ’14 Olympiad, T.E.A.M.S. (Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathematics, and Science), and Girls State where she was elected Speaker of the House and chosen as one of two Senators to represent Delaware at Girls Nation. She was also a member of the National Honor Society and the National Science Honor Society.
A four-year member of the Mock Trial team, she won four Best Attorney award gavels over this span, and she became lead attorney her senior year.
“High school is not a means to an end, but rather an experience to be cherished and shared with others”
Zixin said, however, that what made her Archmere experience truly unique were the relationships and lifelong memories she made with her fellow classmates during their four years together. “To my classmates, my friends, thank you for the most incredible four years of my life. Thank you for teaching me that high school is not a means to an end, but rather an experience to be cherished and shared with others.” Zixin will attend Harvard in the fall, where she plans to study law.

Spotlight On Campus Ministry
Q & A with Bill Gabriel, Campus Minister In his first year as campus minister, Bill Gabriel, in partnership with Father McLaughlin, has been challenged to build upon the campus ministry program at Archmere and reinvigorate the students’ interest in their own spiritual development. An assistant coach for Archmere’s boys’ basketball team, Bill is a recent graduate of Villanova University, witha Bachelor’s in Theology and Religious Studies. He is also the founder and director of the Saint Ambrose: Summer Catholic Learning Experience, a week-long program for students preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation that is taught by young people in the Church in northern New England.
What are some of the initiatives that you have introduced? One program that is new to Archmere is a daily prayer experience we have called Kenosis. It is a three-minute “midday moment of rest” that is held during the beginning of each lunch period in the Oratory. It’s a great opportunity to pause in our busy schedules, take a deep breath, recognize God’s presence in our lives, and pray with one another.
Mr. Bill Gabriel, Campus Minister, leading prayer at a school liturgy in the Theatre.
Two other new initiatives were introduced; the music ministry group, a team of students who help lead the student body in song during school Masses; and a variety of daily morning prayers, through which each member of the Archmere community is prayed for by name throughout the year. These and the other exciting new initiatives (like personal petitions during the Lenten Cross Blessing and a fellowship treat at our Thanksgiving Liturgy) were designed to help support the already vibrant campus ministry programs here, and could not be possible without the creativity, time, assistance, and input of faculty, staff, and students – for which I am very grateful.
What were some of your biggest successes this year? The all-school class retreat day, which was held on December 5 for the freshman, sophomore, and junior classes, went well this year. Each retreat was designed around a particular theme – Created (9th) & Called (10th), Gifted (11th) & Sent (12th). Students expressed that they were engaged and shared positive feedback after the day of reflection, team building, and Mass which was celebrated in the newly renovated worship space on campus, The Immaculate Conception Oratory. In terms of the liturgies, one Mass that was particularly moving was the All Saints Day Mass, for which students and families were able to send in names and photos of loved ones who had passed away this year for a special remembrance. Many students, parents, and faculty members expressed that they were touched by this Mass.
22
Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 1: Mission What were some of your challenges that you faced this year? Participation in the liturgies is always a bit of a challenge. Something that is helpful for my own understanding of my role in the Mass is reminding myself where the early Church would first celebrate the Eucharist – in the home. The home: an intimate setting where every person’s presence is valued. When we gather for our campus liturgies, my hope is to create a celebration where our students are welcomed home.
“The purpose of Campus Ministry is more than Masses and retreats – it’s fellowship, it’s bringing the community together and getting students involved in their faith.”
Why is it important for students to take time to develop their spirituality? At this time in their lives, our students are constantly questioning their faith and religion. In these years of discernment, it is especially important for students to take the next step in exploring their faith – to make it real for them.
What are your goals for the Campus Ministry department going forward? The purpose of Campus Ministry is more than Masses and retreats – it’s fellowship, it’s bringing the community together and getting students involved in their faith. One of my goals for next year is to start a peer ministry team that will continue to encourage student participation and help plan activities, prayer, retreats, and Masses. It’s about inspiring ourselves and one another to be of “one mind and one heart” on the way to God – whether it’s through a smile in the hallway or leading a song at Mass, whether it’s in the Oratory, or on the basketball court. This happens every day at Archmere, there is something special going on here.

Investing in Their Future: Expanded Counseling Services
In pursuit of Archmere’s mission to “cultivate empathetic leaders – young men and women prepared for every good work,” the Academy has always encouraged students’ academic, social and spiritual growth – while simultaneously providing practical preparation for their next educational step – college. In response to the increasingly competitive college application process, as well as the pressures that can arise in Archmere’s academically challenging environment, Archmere Academy has invested time and resources to build upon both the guidance and college counseling departments. With the announcement of the retirement of longtime counselor and director of Mr. Chris Boehm, Director of College Counseling and Ms. Catherine Souza, Archmere’s college counseling and guidance, Mrs. Carolyn Associate Director of College Counseling. Doyle, this past year, the search began for a full-time college counselor and assistant counselor. “(Mrs. Doyle’s) initiative, professionalism, and commitment to our kids have helped to create a counseling department that serves our families faithfully each year,” says Mr. Jordan. “Whether meeting with a family to discuss college objectives, counseling students about career decisions, or simply being a kind and attentive colleague, Carolyn has been the ultimate professional. We owe her a huge debt of gratitude for her faithful work here at Archmere.” Filling the role of Director of College Counseling for the coming year will be Mr. Christopher Boehm. Formerly the Director of Admission & Assistant Vice President for Enrollment Management for Albright College, Chris has over 15 years of experience in college admissions. As an active member of the Pennsylvania Association for College Admission Counseling, he served on the Professional Development Committee since 1998, was a PACAC delegate to the executive committee from 2003-2005, and was a NACAC (National Association for College Admission) assembly delegate from 2005 to 2008. He was awarded the Association’s James McKeever Promising Professional Award in 2000 and the William R. McClintick Service Award in 2012. Chris is a graduate of Lock Haven University and has a master’s degree from Kutztown University. Serving alongside Chris will be Ms. Catherine Souza, Archmere’s new Assistant Director of College Counseling. Catherine comes to Archmere from LeHigh University, where she was the Assistant Director of Admissions since 2012. A former Admission Counselor for Albright College and Muhlenberg College, Catherine is also a member of the PACAC and is a graduate of Muhlenberg. Catherine and Chris’ knowledge of the college admissions industry and their relationships with admissions counselors at universities across the country will certainly help them create strong programs for Archmere’s students. In fact, they have already brought new initiatives to the campus. With the college counseling office’s shift from a 10-month schedule to a 12-month schedule, Catherine, Chris, and Liz Lyon, College Counseling Assistant, began providing students and parents with services over the summer. Before the start of the 2014-2015 school year, the department had already seen over 80 families for advisement meetings, provided workshops on essay writing, admission interview prep, and making the most of college visits, and hosted “open houses” to drive traffic to the office.
24
Strategic Plan 2012 Focus 3: Excellent Teachers & Staff They also created a college counseling blog on the academy’s “Behind the Arch” blog site (http://blogsandpubs. archmereacademy.com/collegecounseling/) , and started a Twitter account - @auks2college. “We want to be as accessible as possible to the students and parents,” says Chris, who adds that the department will be offering college prep resources and events for all students – freshman through seniors. “[Catherine and I] love working with students. Our first goal is to help them find their fit. Our second goal is to help make the application process as efficient as possible - and maybe even a little fun.” In this spirit of providing more top-notch resources for our student body, Archmere has also expanded the guidance department, adding two guidance counselors at the start of the 2014-2015 school year who will work alongside current counselors Jonathon Jezyk and Joanna Marinelli Doroh ’00. This expansion will help to meet the needs of all of our students as they face the academic, social and spiritual challenges of their Archmere schedule and look ahead to their collegiate careers. These positions have been filled by two professionals from within the Archmere community: alumna and former part-time counselor, Ms. Francesca Pileggi ’06, and former faculty member and counselor Father John Zaggarella, O.Praem. of Daylesford Abbey. A third generation Auk and a 2006 graduate of Archmere, Francesca Pileggi earned her Bachelor’s degree from Lafayette College and has a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Immaculata University. For the past six years, Francesca has been very involved in suicide prevention and mental health advocacy. As the counselor for the sophomore class, Francesca is looking forward to having the time to connect with each member of the class of 2017 individually. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to give back to a community that gave me so much during my four years as an Archmere student,” she says. Father John Zaggarella, O.Praem. of Archmere’s sponsoring community, Daylesford Abbey, has a Bachelor’s degree from Villanova University, a Master’s of Divinity from the Dominican House of Studies and a Master’s in Counseling Psychology from Immaculata University. From 1990-1992, Father Zaggarella taught speech communication and religion at Archmere and served as the 1994 class counselor. In 2004 he returned to serve as Archmere’s Headmaster until 2006. Father Zaggarella is “ecstatic” about returning to the Archmere community and hopes that he can serve as not only a resource to the students, but to also “partner with Father McLaughlin in bringing the gift of Norbertine priesthood to our school.” “We call Saint Norbert ’the Minister of Peace and Concord,’” he says. “As Archmere is a school in the Norbertine Tradition, I hope to bring that spirit of healing, peace and reconciliation to the team.” Ms. Francesca Pileggi ’06 and Father John Zagarella, O.Praem., Guidance Counselors

Celebrating Our Artists: 7th Annual Fine Arts Festival
On March 23, 2014, Archmere held its seventh annual Fine Arts Festival in The Patio, featuring artwork created by Archmere students in a variety of mediums. Among the student work featured were pieces that received both regional and national recognition. Archmere sophomore John Vaile’s sculpture titled, “The Animal Within,” received the 2014 distinguished national American Visions Award, and sophomore Claire Moosberg’s acrylic painting titled, “Cannoli Craze,” earned a silver medal in the competition. Both pieces had previously received Gold Keys in the regional competition in Delaware.

Alumnus Profile
Christopher Boone ’93 When he graduated from Archmere 21 years ago, award-winning screenwriter and director Chris Boone ’93 went to college with the mindset of studying something that was “career-oriented.” The thought of pursuing a degree in film never crossed his mind. “The weird thing was [as a kid], I loved movies, and it never occurred to me that I could make one of these,” Chris said. “I wasn’t one of those people who ran around with a camcorder, or even an eight millimeter camera. I wasn’t writing stories. I liked writing, but in high school I was much more into math and science.” For Chris, the open-ended nature of writing, opposed to the Christopher Boone ’93 directing actresses on the set of CENTS. logical structure of math and science, was most difficult to understand. “That was the struggle — to get over that,” he said. “To be able to put yourself out there. Be willing to fail. Be willing to have people criticize you, and tell you what they don’t like about it, and also what they do like.” Chris distinctly remembers his senior year English teacher, Mr. Barnard, commenting on his unique gift to tell a story, and in a way, planting the seeds for his future career as a screenwriter. “He was one of the first teachers at Archmere that came up to me and told me, ’You are a very good writer. You have an interesting voice,’” Chris said. “And I hadn’t thought of myself in that way. It was encouraging.” Fast forward 15 years to 2012. Chris has been involved in over ten films, credited for work as a director, writer, producer, editor, assistant director, on-set assistant, and production manager. Chris’ most recent screenplay CENTS was named a 2012 Nicholl Fellowship Semifinalist, selected as one of 129 scripts that were chosen from 7200 submissions. Currently, the script is in the second round of the 2014 Sundance Institute Screenwriting Lab selection process. The movie focuses on the relationship struggles of protagonist Sammy Baca, an adolescent girl who has a gift for mathematics, but uses her intelligence to operate a morally questionable penny drive scheme. Chris says he had no intention of transforming the award-winning short into a full length, feature film until a few people in the film industry approached him about the idea. In January 2014, he launched a successful monthlong Kickstarter campaign (kickstarter.com), achieving his fundraising goal of $60,000 to cover filming and production costs. To spread the word about his fundraising efforts, Chris initially used nofilmschool.com, a website for which he is a contributing blogger. But he said it all would never have come to fruition if it were not for the generous support he received from fellow Archmere alumni and community members. “I was just blown away at how many people from Archmere, after two decades, contributed - and some very generous contributions as well,” Chris said. “It really floored me. And they didn’t just contribute, they told their friends about it.” Chris and his production crew wrapped up principal photography for CENTS in early August. He said the 2015 movie premiere date is yet to be determined, but he hopes to coordinate a special screening for the Archmere community. 33

2013-2014 Honor Roll of Donors
40
Message from the Chair of the Board of Trustees Dear Friends of Archmere, It is with great pride and gratitude that I present the 2013-2014 Honor Roll of Donors. Archmere’s success is a true collaboration of the time, talent and resources of many. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees, I sincerely thank everyone listed in the pages that follow for your ongoing commitment and support. Like all independent schools, Archmere cannot accomplish its mission based on tuition revenue alone. Annual giving and endowment income are critical to ensuring the Archmere experience we treasure so dearly. These funds support the people and programs that make Archmere such a special place. This means premiere faculty, a diverse and talented student body, small classes, advanced technology, a beautiful campus, extra-curricular programing and an environment of faith and values. As the table below demonstrates, Archmere has made enormous progress by increasing annual giving in a remarkably brief period of time. In fact, for the past three years the Archmere Fund has surpassed its goals (FY’12 Goal: $500,000; FY’13: $550,000, and FY’14: $600,000) and new records have been set each year for both the Archmere Fund and total Annual Giving! I am equally proud to announce 100% participation by the Board of Trustees and Archmere Faculty and Staff in support of the Archmere Fund.
Mr. John S. Gerard Board Chair

Additionally, we were blessed with contributions of $106,000 to the endowment, as well as capital pledge payments that brought total giving for the 2013-2014 fiscal year to $1,354,000. All of this would not be possible without the time, dedication and commitment of an army of volunteers – parents, teachers, administrators, alumni, parents of alumni, trustees and other friends of Archmere. You have made this possible. Thank you! In particular I would like to thank Robert E. Shields ’60 for his leadership as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for the past four years. Archmere has thrived under his direction and I am humbled to follow in his footsteps. Further acknowledgement is extended to Michael J. Hare ’79 for his leadership as President of the Alumni Council and former Chair of the Advancement Committee. His efforts have had a dramatic impact on the success of the Advancement Program as well as the engagement of our alumni. I’d also like to thank William F. Githens ’64 for serving as the Chairman of the 2013-2014 Advancement Committee and leading an effort that resulted in another banner fundraising year for Archmere. Further, I am pleased to introduce Kevin Gilroy as the 2014-2015 Chair of the Advancement Committee. Like myself, Kevin has been so captivated with the Archmere experience through his children (Jamie ’08, Michelle ’11 and Sarah ’13), that he is an engaged volunteer and committed member of the Board of Trustees. Last, but certainly not least, I’d like to thank Maria N. Peet and Richard Sweeny ’83 for leading the Mothers’ Guild and the Fathers’ Club to their most successful years in Archmere history. On behalf of the Board of Trustees with gratitude and faithfully in St. Norbert,
John S. Gerard Board Chair

Ways To Invest In Archmere Academy
Charitable Gift Planning There are a variety of creative ways to fulfill your philanthropic goals by supporting Archmere Academy. Charitable gift planning enables you to maximize your philanthropic potential, achieve significant tax advantages and even secure lifetime income for you or someone else. You can realize financial benefits today while enriching the lives of others far into the future. We would be happy to work with you and your financial advisor to achieve your charitable goals.
Bequest Giving through your will is the most popular way to make an estate gift and one of the most significant ways donors can benefit Archmere Academy. Through a provision in your written and executed will, you can make a gift in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or personal property. Consider this sample language: I give and devise to Archmere Trust (Tax ID #46-1515121), located in Claymont, DE, all (or state a percentage) of the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate, both real and personal, to be used for its general support (or for the support of a specific fund or program).
Insurance Do you have a paid whole life policy that you no longer need? Does your employer provide you with life insurance that you haven’t included in your estate plans? Consider gifting the policy to Archmere Academy as the policy’s beneficiary.
Retirement plan assets Tax deferred retirement assets in your 401(k), 403(b) or traditional IRA are great for you and your spouse. Unfortunately, your heirs will never see the full value of what remains. Once these assets pass to someone other than your spouse, the taxes you didn’t pay are due in full—substantially reducing what your heirs receive. Making Archmere the beneficiary will help build our long-term financial strength while also delivering significant tax savings to your heirs.
Charitable Gift Annuities A charitable gift annuity (CGA) is a contract between you and Archmere Academy. You make a gift of a specified amount and we send you a payment each month, quarter or year (your choice) for an amount depending on your age.
Charitable Remainder Trusts You can establish a charitable remainder trust to pay a variable amount (a charitable remainder unitrust) or one that pays you a fixed amount (a charitable remainder annuity trust). At your passing, the trust’s “remainder” goes to Archmere Academy.
