KANSAS CITY CO-CHAIRS ANTHONY BIRCHLER | A. ZAHNER COMPANY | VP ENGINEERING/SALES Birchler leads Zahner’s design-engineering team. Since 1998, he has been responsible for designing many of the patented systems which are now used to complete bold architecture all over the world. Birchler shared responsibility for developing two out of five patents held by Zahner, best known for the ongoing work that he put into developing the ZEPPS® Technology, the firm’s dual-curvature building system, which has been used to make several complexbuildings. Birchler works directly with owners, engineers, architects, and general contractors, providing intelligent problem-solving for the production of complex facades.

MIRANDA GROTH | HELIX ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN | PROJECT ARCHITECT Groth is a project manager and market leader for the firm’s higher education practice. She has developed a specialized focus on academic facilities and is recognized for her ability to deliver complex projects on schedule and within budget. Since joining the firm, she’s managed over 150,000 square feet of projects for Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences and currently manages the renovation/expansion of the Avila University Performing Arts Center and the adaptive reuse of a 1950’s bowling alley into a new home for the Academy for Integrated Arts charter school. Groth’s projects have been recognized by the AIA, IIDA, and American School & University magazine.

SPEAKERS GLENN HEITMANN | HEITMANN & ASSOCIATES | PRESIDENT + CEO Heitmann & Associates, established in 1966 in St. Louis, MO to serve those involved in the development, design, and construction of all types of commercial buildings, provides building enclosure consultation and curtain wall design/engineering/drafting. Heitmann is actively involved with all the companies’ projects, monitoring progress, and assuring that adequate resources are available to meet project requirements. He also charted the development of the firm to adjust the services to meet changing market requirements and new technology. His direction has enhanced the firm’s international and local market presence including establishing satellite offices in Hong Kong, New York, Chicago, Phoenix and Pasadena.

PHIL KOLBO | POPULOUS | ASSOCIATE + SENIOR ARCHITECT TECHNICIAN Kolbo is an experienced senior architect technician with an extensive knowledge of stadium, arena, and convention center design. His passion is creating buildings that push the envelope in both design and technology. He graduated second in his class at Iowa State University where he built a strong foundation of sustainability, graduating with LEED certification. He currently leads the parametric modeling and computational design group for Populous’ North America region as a Populous Intelligence Ambassador, creating and streamlining BIM tools unique to sports and convention center design.

TIM MEYERS | HOK | PROJECT DESIGNER + ASSOCIATE Meyers has extensive experience working with multi-disciplined project teams on complex sports facilities at the collegiate and professional levels. His sharp attention to detail and organization combined with his natural leadership abilities make him an effective project designer committed to his projects’ success. His expertise with parametric modeling and design has impacted each project he works on, including his most recent projects - Rogers Place and Little Caesars Arena. His responsibilities include master planning, schematic design, design development, construction documentation, and construction administration. Meyers is influential in advancing the way HOK uses technology on sports facility projects.

PAUL NEIDLEIN | JE DUNN CONSTRUCTION | SR VICE PRESIDENT OPERATIONS Neidlein is responsible for Corporate, Commercial, Civic/Public, Non-Profit, and Dunn Project Solutions as well as supporting operations in the state of Iowa. Current projects his team is working on include Cerner Trails Campus, Kansas City Downtown Convention Center Hotel, Corrigan Garage, Henry W. Bloch Gallery at the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, Dairy Farmers of American Corporate Headquarters, and numerous tenant improvement projects. Neidlein is a LEED Accredited Professional with over 20 years of experience in construction and is currently on the Board of Directors for Ronald McDonald House Charities of Kansas City where he serves as the Operations Committee Chair.

PAOLA SANGUINETTI | THE UNIVERSITY OF KANSAS | CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF ARCHITECTURE + ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR Sanguinetti’s field of research is building technology and the use of computational models for design and analysis. Her current research focused on important aspects of design computation, including parametric modeling and building simulation, and BIM and integrated project delivery for facade systems. Her expertise include performance-based design and risk-analysis for building facade retrofit. Sanguinetti gained professional


experience with internationally distinguished architectural practices including Emilio Ambasz and Zaha Hadid. She teaches architectural design and design computation in the Architecture Department at KU. Her courses promote student investigation of sustainable strategies towards energy efficiency.

GREG SHELDON | BNIM ARCHITECTS | ASSOCIATE PRINCIPAL With over three decades of architectural experience in all phases of design and construction, Sheldon has a commanding knowledge of building systems, curtain wall, glazing, and facade performance. His expertise is evident in the Kansas City projects for which he has served as the Senior Project Architect, including the Science City addition at Union Station, and the Bloch Building addition at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Sheldon’s generosity and collaborative nature inspires innovation and excellence and his approach is refreshingly practical—wanting to find the simplest, most direct solution to each problem he faces. In 2006, he was recognized as Architect of the Year by KC’s AIA chapter and was elevated to the AIA college of fellows in 2013.

JOSH SHELTON | EL DORADO | PRINCIPAL Shelton received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Tennessee in 1995. While at U.T., he received the Pella Traveling Scholarship and spent a year abroad studying and working in Melbourne, Australia. Shelton has practiced architecture in San Antonio, TX and in Lawrence, KS with Dan Rockhill and Associates. He joined el dorado inc in 1999 and became a principal in 2002. Shelton is currently managing social impact urban design projects in Kansas City, Lawrence, Omaha, Denver, Calgary, and Seattle. His projects have been published nationally and internationally and have been recognized by local, regional, and national design awards programs.

KRISTINE SUTHERLIN | HELIX ARCHITECTURE + DESIGN | PRINCIPAL Known for her ability to keep projects under budget and within schedule, Sutherlin provides firm wide leadership on project management and professional development initiatives. Since joining the firm in 2001, she has developed extensive expertise managing complex renovation projects, including the $250-million phased renovation of the Richard D. Bolling Federal Building for GSA. The project received national recognition for Design Excellence from the GSA and is now being utilized as the model for other mid-century federal office building renovations throughout the country. Other notable projects include the historic renovation of the Brass on Baltimore and the renovation and expansion of the Olson Performing Arts Center. Design recognition for Sutherlin’s work includes over 20 local and national awards from varied organizations.

L. WILLIAM ZAHNER | A. ZAHNER COMPANY | CEO/PRESIDENT Zahner and his 119-year-old firm have received numerous honors and awards for their extensive design build work around the world. He is a world-renowned lecturer on the design and use of architectural metal, digital definition, and 3D engineering means and methods. He has authored two books and numerous articles which are the “comprehensive guides” describing the use of metal in architecture, sharing his wealth of knowledge derived from being a fourth-generation expert. Zahner is also an accomplished sculptor and has served on the Advisory Board of several prestigious organizations.
