With a focus on place, craft and performance-driven solutions, Alex has led the design and delivery processes for academic, healthcare, commercial and civic projects. Notable work includes the award-winning Health Sciences Innovation Building at the University of Arizona and the Student Services Building at Cal Poly Pomona. He is committed to developing innovative exterior envelope systems and making environmental, economic, social and functional sustainable design a fundamental part of every projects. Alex holds a Bachelor in Architecture from the University of Manchester and a Diploma in Architecture from the Glasgow School of Art.

Senior Associate / CO Architects
Esther Chao is a senior associate at CO Architects with over nine years of experience on higher education, science & technology, and healthcare projects. Esther has worked on advanced facilities for clients such as the University of Texas at Austin, Northern Kentucky University, Arizona State University, University of California, Caltech, and the Terasaki Institute. She holds a special interest in facades, and recently worked on the facade development for the Engineering Discovery Building at UT Austin. The design uses terracotta, glass, limestone, and metal in unique and cohesive ways. Esther received her Bachelor of Arts in Architecture Studies from UCLA and a Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan.
STEPHEN MAHER
Associate / CO Architects
Stephen Maher has nine years of experience in healthcare, mixed-use, commercial, residential, and transit projects. Since joining CO Architects in 2020, Stephen’s focus has been on the UCI Health – Irvine’s exterior envelope design, development and structural coordination. The facade utilizes a unified curtainwall system and plays a key role in contributing to the energy performance on this all-electric hospital. Stephen received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Oregon. Additionally, he has served as a studio instructor and a guest critic at the University of Oregon School of Architecture & Environment and the Ohio State University Knowlton School of Architecture.

Chris Kaiser has over 10 years of experience working on a variety of projects, including health sciences and schools of medicine, healthcare facilities, and higher education buildings. He served as a designer on the 245,000-square-foot University of Arizona Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building. This 10-story building features a striking copper facade inspired by the deep recesses of desert cliff dwellings. Additionally, Chris has worked on a new school of medicine for the University of Nevada and a new medical center for UCI Health. He brings expertise in designing and technically executing complex forms and programs using 3D BIM modeling and detailing.

Jack Murphy is the Executive Editor of The Architect’s Newspaper. Previously, he was Editor of Cite: The Architecture and Design Review of Houston and Adjunct Professor at the Gerald D. He earned an undergraduate degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a graduate degree in architecture from Rice University. He has worked for award-winning architects in New York City, Houston, Austin, and Boston. His writing has appeared in Places Journal, Dwell, Architectural Record, The Architect’s Newspaper, Texas Architect, Cite, PLAT, Paprika!, New York Review of Architecture, The Houston Chronicle, and SF Gate, among other publications. Peter Birkholz, AIA, LEED AP, DBIA, is president and principal of the architecture and historic preservation firm Page & Turnbull in San Francisco, San Jose, Los Angeles, and Sacramento. He has led the Page & Turnbull team on the awardwinning Livermore Rail Depot Renovation. He works on privately funded resiliency efforts for several piers in the National Register-listed Embarcadero Historic District. Peter received an architecture degree from Iowa State University in 1984 and is a registered architect in California and a LEED Accredited Professional (BD+C) by the U.S. Green Building Council. Birkholz joined Page & Turnbull in 2007 after serving as project architect while at the firm Tom Eliot Fisch.

Lesak meets the Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualification Standards for Architecture and Historic Architecture. Irene is an Environmental and Mechanical Engineering Associate at Arup. She leads the Building Envelope Physics sub-discipline within the Americas Region and co-leads the Los Angeles Facades team. Irene has 16 years of experience on international projects ranging from historic buildings to new-build museums and office towers. Her passion for environmental considerations and occupant comfort has led her to advocate for thoughtful envelope designs that balance architectural delight with responsible resource consumption, mainly carbon and energy.

O’Hara is facade director for the Skins Group, a division of Studio NYL, established to provide full service facade design specializing in thermal modeling, moisture/condensation analysis, and in-depth detailing. Although Studio NYL is recognized for its skins work with cutting-edge glass and glazing, their team also specializes in digitally fabricated metal skins, GFRC, reinforced polymers, stone, ultra high performance concrete, terra cotta, and traditional precast. O’Hara is currently working on multiple projects in the Boston area.

Lisa leads Eckersley O’Callaghan’s West Coast offices in San Francisco and Los Angeles. She joined EOC in 2013 to support the practice’s emerging facade engineering group in London and after playing a significant role in the group’s exceptional growth, Lisa has been responsible for the expansion of EOC’s West Coast presence. Lisa directs EOC’s R&D efforts, focusing on innovative glass designs and technology. She remains heavily involved in academia particularly with the Facade Research Group at TU Delft.

James leads the West Coast region of HKS | LINE alongside Heath May. His responsibilities cut across various sectors and stages of design. He has significantly contributed to some of the most complex and innovative elements of the HKS portfolio. Most notable supporting Venues and Sports on complex geometries and longspan structures. James also teaches Advanced Structures within the Woodbury University’s School of Architecture graduate program. He promotes computational design as a tool for conceptual form finding, in-situ concept analysis, and optimization methodologies. His course encourages structural concepts that extend beyond the fundamentals into form-active and vector active design approaches.

As the National Accounts Manager of Facade Solutions for Saint-Gobain North America, Roger has over 30 years of experience in the construction and building materials space with extensive expertise in glazing applications and technologies. Roger began his career with Saint-Gobain Glass Solutions in 1989 and has held several Sales & Project Management roles in Europe and North America. From Stockley Park in London via Samsung HQ in Seoul and the Oculus in New York to Mission Rock in San Francisco, he specializes in developing facade solutions for light and sustainable construction across the U.S. and is based in wonderful Southern California.

Facade Specialist / RDH
As a Facade Specialist, Felix has a deep knowledge in complex facade and glass design. He is a highly creative engineer and experienced team leader with over 15 years of experience in facade consulting and structural engineering. He enjoys designing structures and facades influenced by individual materials or products. He has worked with many cladding types and specializes in structural facades, structural glass, complex geometry structures, and uncommon building materials such as ETFE and fiber-reinforced polymers.
