FOR DOMESTICITY
PROJECT BY ERIKA VAN SLYKEResidential home design typically responds to the idea of a nuclear family, but there are approximately 11 million single-parent households in the U.S.. My project aims to create housing that caters to this very prevalent, yet underserved group. I explored what drives the design of great communal and private spaces by responding to the life rhythms and needs of singleparent families coexisting. Not only does my proposed home instill a sense of community and connection, but it also makes homeownership a more feasible option for single parents.
