Persona Firefighters and other first responders experience a constancy of anxiety when they find themselves doing what they were trained to. And, not so rarely, many feel some degree of post traumatic stress from past experiences they’ve survived. Incident response teams are sent to different natural disaster locations where needed, and are often away from home for long periods of time. With this in mind, the vehicle they take on site has a few amenities, including room for them to lie down, but also plenty of space to cart victims around in.

2

Current Solution As it stands now, disaster relief shelters are generally large tents that, while temperature controlled, offer no sense of privacy to those within it. The shelters additionally have no relationship to one another, and therefore lack in meaningful interstitial space in which to congregate and enjoy the outdoors. Also, because of each unit’s size, and their rectangular shape, they cannot be placed on uneven ground, or near trees, limiting them to parking lots or deserts.

Compact Trailer Deployed for all major natural disasters, this folding trailer allows for maximum mobility on both highways and on difficult terrain. What it houses inside has life-saving implications. While the attached vehicle rescues victims to escort them back to safety, the trailer expands to house all personnel, and provide the necessary utilities to victims that have recently found themselves without their usual proper shelter.

Unfolding Process through a series of accordian folds, russian nesting doll maneuvers, and nylon shell deployment, this origami inspired sequence allows for a much wider and taller space to become available for all first responders, and for the utilities to avail themselves to not only them, but for anyone who needs them.

Hydraulic Rising Press

To unfold the structure autonomously, devices such as a hydraulic press need to be implemented, to avoid using human hands to raise and lower the walls on the trailer. Similar technology is used to move the walls laterally and rotationally.

Unfolded Structure After folding outwards to form this easily tessalated structure, the car is conveniently housed underneath. The overhangs that the second story provides offers enough room for users to have shade and a protection from the elements while they enjoy the fresh air outside.

LEVEL 2

Floor Plan The first floor of the structure, being more accessible, contains the most utilized appliances, such as a kitchenette for preparing quick meals, a bathroom, and open living room. The floor above serves as a bedroom for the first responders, and also contains desks, and ample storage space that can be folded up without damaging anything inside.

Interior Renderings On the ground level, wooden furniture and millwork keep the people comfortable, and store their canned goods and other durable food types. The floor above sleeps up to three people, and has drawers to store any personal belongings necessary, and also contains desks for late night reading, or setting up communication to evacuate survivors or call in aid from other responders.

Pavilion Unfolding An accessory unit to the Unfolding trailer, the pavilion tent will be used to house overflow victims that cannot find room within the trailers. These have plenty of room for beds and area to stretch one’s legs. They can also easily fold back up and be stored on the trailer while moving. from place to place.

Lorain County Along this strip of I-90, the most probable disaster to strike is a wind storm, more specifically a tornado. In the event of this, the best place to be is a field, far away from buildings that may be wrecked, and whose debris can be used to cause further damage. The site chosen is a nearby elementary school, a building that will be able to handle high winds that also offers additional utility for survvors. The site has an additional benefit that it has very close proximity to the regional airport, to both pick up survivors, and carry in supplies.

Site Plan The deployment site for this particular county of Ohio, Lorain, is the campus and fields of Crestwood Elementary. Its facilities, if kept intact can be very useful for the potential victims as they find respite on the site. If damaged in the disaster, the fields leave ample room for the trailers to unfold and to provide for all involved.

Parking Diagram Once the structure is completely unfolded, the carrier truck can either go back out into the storm to retrieve other survivors, or, once finished, through a series of automated maneuvers, fully calibrated for any terrain, reverse and park underneath the second story overhang. This protects the vehicle from any weather damage, ensuring that the most vital transportation method to the operation stays functional for as long as possible.
