Greater Grand Crossing Cultural Center Patrick McQuillen Lyceum 2020: Belt Tightening - Bungalows for the Millennial Family Faculty Advisor: Terry Boling Proposed for the Chicago South Side neighborhood of Greater Grand Crossing is a mixed-use cultural center. The structure consists of: an aquarium (housing endangered species of Lake Michigan), a covered outdoor area for farmer’s markets/pop up shops, a small two room charter school, a demonstration kitchen, exhibition space, public dining/lounge space, studio apartments, dorm style rooms, and a rooftop patio/garden. Public spaces are designed to be open and flexible, accommodating multiple activities throughout the day. The layout and design is reminiscent of Italian rationalism as well as iconic modernist Chicago architecture from Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. Like many parts of Chicago, Greater Grand Crossing was once littered with redlining, attempting to keep Black Americans out. The rational approach rejects the traditional bungalow style. The traditional bungalow represents a model that was unattainable through discrimination a few centuries back to those who now reside in the neighborhood. By ignoring the bungalow and in return bringing an international style to the site, the progression that has begun in American culture may be related back into the architecture of the neighborhood. The structure is built of tabby concrete- a concrete created from shells (burned shells produce lime while broken shells are used as aggregate). This concrete would utilize the invasive species of the Great Lakes - the zebra and quagga mussels - thus making concrete a sustainable option. Interiors would be lined with wool felt from sheep, giving a soft contrast to the harsh concrete. Recylced stained glass windows are the sole bungalow element utilized in this design, a note to the spiritual rebirth of the site.
