Message from Kirsten DuBray Executive director foundation / advancement This has been a “promising” year for the American River College Foundation. In addition to continued support from our corporate and business partners Grainger, SureWest, Wells Fargo, SMUD, Intel, and DeVry, we were thrilled to see the beautiful new Science and Fine & Applied Arts building open with four of six classes named in honor and in memory of people near and dear to American River College. The Nutrition classroom is named in memory of Wendy Hunt who was a Nutrition professor from 1976 to 2000, one of the two science classrooms is named in memory of Alyce Mae Fiedler a biology

professor from 1968-1993; the second science classroom is named in honor of Sheila Epler who was a chemistry professor from 1966 to 2001; and finally, the Interior Design classroom was named in memory of ARC alumnus Christine Dorf who was a very successful graduate of the Kitchen and Bath Design Program. We also saw many new participants join the $5 for the Future program to help us continue to build our annual giving program. These donations, although different in size, scope and intention, are equal in their impact on student success. The American River College Foundation knows there are many organizations worthy of support, and we thank our donors who have entrusted us with their philanthropy.

Former student body presidents share fond memories and their

PR IDE FOR A RC They came to American River College from around the country – from Ohio, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, the Los Angeles area, and San Francisco. They are all proud alumni and former student body presidents. Each one had stories to share, all with a common thread – gratitude for the great times they had at ARC and their pride in the college. The ARC Foundation Alumni Committee organized and hosted a celebration with former student body presidents in the new Student Center on January 30.

Alumni shared their fondest – and funniest – memories. They recalled homecoming games and dances.

2014 UpClose

The first-ever student body president from 1955, Bob Bastian, was in attendance. The class years of those who attended the celebration include 1957, 1959, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, 1976, 1979, 1982, 1993, 1994, 2007... and even 2014. Current student body president, Kenneth Hinton, spoke to the group about the current activities of student government on campus and had a wonderful time comparing notes with Bob Bastian. The alumni were happy to return to ARC and spend a delightful afternoon revisiting their alma mater.

First off, attendees were treated to a walking tour. They marveled at all the new buildings and facilities on campus. The alumni loved seeing all the growth and change at ARC including the parking garage, small gym, Learning Resource Center, renovated Library, Student Center, Science and Fine Arts building, as well as the culinary building that is under construction. Following the tour, Interim ARC President Dr. Pam Walker welcomed the group and spoke of her experiences as a student at American River College. She asked others to share their memories. That opened a floodgate of laughter and reminiscing. Alumni shared their fondest – and funniest – memories. They recalled homecoming games and dances (plus getting the privilege of kissing the homecoming queen). They remembered details like how cannons were fired at football games after touchdowns – something that would certainly not happen today in ARC’s residential neighborhood!

There were a few sentimental tears, too. The college held dear memories for classmates now gone, and people with whom they shared so many moments. The most frequent comment from the alums was how much the ARC faculty care about the students. They spoke with deep appreciation of the kindness offered to them while they were students and they frequently expressed the sense of belonging they experienced at ARC. Several retired faculty members enjoyed the evening visiting with the alums; including: Jim Mar (Counseling), Larry Vrieling (Counseling), Ken Miller (English), David Gamst (Speech), Ernest Dahl (Counseling), Steve Epler (Administration), Linda Dixon (Biology), and Lucille Rybka (Nursing). Student Development Dean Manuel Perez and Student Life Supervisor Tanika Byrd offered a highlight of changes in student life giving the alumni an inside look at the current state of student leadership.

Seeing the value in giving back to support their two-year alma mater, they invite their former class colleagues to join them in making a gift to the $5 for the Future program. To top it off, the alums enjoyed scrumptious food prepared by ARC’s award-winning culinary program. The event created an atmosphere of gratitude. Attendees gave generously to support the work of the ARC Foundation and have continued to offer support in funding scholarships, gifts of appreciated stock and bequests. Future Campaign. Through this annual fundraising effort, the ARC Foundation is able to support every area on campus with minigrant awards up to $5,000 annually. Almost $1 million has provided a margin of excellence for students from the $5 for the Future Campaign. It is because of sincere affection for ARC, and for all the college means to them, and how they want to give back, that alumni continue to help future generations of student leaders. Thank you to all former student leaders, for your legacy of service to ARC. You will always have a home here!

ARC GI S Program

is Largest of its Kind in the Nation

A Geographic Information System (GIS) is a computer-based mapping application that is tied to databases containing descriptive information. In other words, a GIS is a “smart” mapping system that represents geographic features together with detailed information that describes those features. GIS is used to make maps, and to analyze geographic data in ways that were not possible in the days of pen-and-ink cartography. In everyday terms, GIS technology is behind virtually every map that you see on your computer, smart phone, tablet, or television. American River College boasts the largest GIS program of any community college in the nation. Our Certificate and Associates Degree are well respected in the region, and nationally. Our instructor pool and our GIS advisory committee consist of some of the highest ranking GIS professionals in the state. Our graduates work in almost every branch of government, particularly in the field of natural resources (California Department of Water Resources, California Department of Fish and Wildlife). Other graduates work in the private sector, primarily at environmental engineering firms.

GIS is used in almost every field. Businesses use it to determine optimal locations to open stores and facilities. The military uses it to plan and execute operations, and government at every level use it to document, plan, and manage urban and rural infrastructure. It is used in public health, natural resources, public safety, transportation, and the list goes on! Having begun in 1997, our GIS program is among the oldest in the country. In 2000, we were honored with the Excellence in Education award from the California Geographic Information Association. In 2004, we received the Special Achievement in GIS award from Environmental Systems Research Institute. We are proud to provide consistent, cutting edge education in a rapidlychanging technological field such as GIS. American River College has been able to meet these challenges for over seventeen years, and we stand ready to take on future challenges in preparing the next generation of GIS analysts and technicians.

“ a true master of his craft ” Math Professor Tony Barcellos Honored ARC Math Professor Tony Barcellos, Ph.D., was honored by the college’s Patrons Club as their 2014 Faculty Chair and Honorarium recipient. The Patrons Chair award annually recognizes an ARC professor for exceptional teaching, commitment, and service to education. A member of the ARC family since 1987, Tony is known in his department as a “jack of all trades,” someone who can teach the most basic courses as well as the most advanced – serving as a master of them all. He is loved by his students for his tireless efforts in supporting their success. Many students came forward through the nomination process to express their profound appreciation for his dedication. One of Tony’s students writes, “I consider it an honor and privilege to have been his student. He is an amazing professor. He cares that students succeed and his humanity is a big part of his teaching. I think he is the best professor I have had!” Another student shares, “He takes time to explain any questions and, if need be, will slow down even further to explain. I’ve had him previously in another math class and he is the reason I’ve decided to pursue a mathematics major. I hope to be at least half the math teacher he is!” Former students also testified to our recipient’s excellence. One graduate writes, “His lectures were a true

lifesaver. He has an exceptional talent for delivering even the most complicated material crisply and clearly, with his signature dose of humor. Throughout my academic career – first at ARC, then at UC Berkeley, and now at Harvard – I have met precious few lecturers with similar ability. He is a true master of his craft.” Another graduate notes, “If there is higher praise to be offered a teacher, then it must surely be that a student chooses to return to a past teacher for advice after the formal student-teacher relationship concludes. Over the past decade, I have spoken to him often and continue to find him to be an admirable mentor. His dedication to students past and present astounds me.” It is no surprise that our 2014 awardee has been named Instructor of the Year in the past by the Associated Student Body. A colleague shares, “Of all his gifts, I wish to describe one that makes Tony’s time at American River College a golden age. He has the unique ability to inspire, to lead, and to bring out the best in his peers.” Another colleague says, “I had the pleasure of having an office very near to his. On a daily basis students sought him out – in groups. Tony would go to the whiteboard outside his office and the joy of mathematics would bounce off

am eri can ri ver co llege fo u n d at i o n

the walls.” Another colleague adds, “When I think of him as chair and valued member of the department, I compare him to the ‘Energizer Bunny’ that keeps on going and giving.” Outside of the classroom, Tony is engaged in countless other campus activities. His involvement with the ARC community includes the following service: • Academic Senate • Formational efforts on ARC’s Instructional Technology Committee • Leadership on relocating the math department to Howard Hall • Input into the design of the future building to replace the Liberal Arts 120, 130 and 160 wings • Participating on hiring committees, as chair of his department, and as faculty co-chair of ARC’s last accreditation review On top of all this, Tony serves his community and professional field by sponsoring scholarships at his alma maters. He is a published author of fiction and nonfiction, easily penning a wide variety of manuscripts from articles to a calculus text to his novel, “Land of Milk and Money.”

$5 for the Future supports

Student Success

Leonel Edwards is an international student from the small Caribbean island of Dominica. He is majoring in biochemistry and would like to transfer to UC Davis.

All gifts, large and small, are making an important difference at American River College – from donations that support enhancing teaching and learning to major initiatives that focus on student learning outcomes. Your gift to the $5 for the Future annual fund campaign helps foster student success for thousands of students by supporting a multitude of projects all over campus. The Foundation’s goal is simple – encourage everyone to give at least $5.00 a month. Thanks to the generous donations from ARC faculty and staff members and a large number of retired employees, the ARC Foundation is able to pool those donations with the support from our alumni and corporate friends. The ARC Foundation uses 100% of the contributions to support three main areas of need on campus: A Project of the Year that costs between $10,000 and $50,000; Foundation minigrant projects up to $5,000; and the Student Emergency Fund which provides immediate financial assistance to students involved in catastrophic or emergency situations. Thanks to pooled participation, the Annual Fund has grown from $200 received in 2002 to more than $70,000 this year and has supported the campus with over $700,000 in total funding to date.

Support the $5 for the Future program and you help support students like those listed here.

underway. On a statewide level, Dr. Walker served on the California Community Colleges Chief Student Services Officers board, as well as the Commission on Athletics. She is a true servant leader and is committed to mentoring others. Pam’s energy and enthusiasm are infectious as she involves and immerses herself in all facets of the college as Interim President. The college thanks Dr. Walker for her leadership during this transition period.

ARC retirees remain Part of the Family The ARC Foundation hosted 100 retired employees for a luncheon in the new Student Center in October. Without a formal emeriti group, the Foundation has taken on the role of hosting an event that encourages retirees to come together and socialize, obtain updates and information from college leaders, and appreciate the new programs and facilities that have emerged since they retired. This year, interim presidents Dr. Marie Smith and Dr. William Karns welcomed retirees with entertainment by ARC’s award-winning vocal jazz ensemble.

The ARC Foundation hopes to continue to host this event annually. To help keep retirees connected throughout the year, ARC’s Community Relations office has created a Facebook group at facebook.com/groups/arcretirees/. Now, when our Foundation/Community Relations office is informed of news of one of our former ARC family members, we are able to share this information on the Retirees Facebook Group page. In addition, retirees can share their own news and updates with former colleagues. This is a closed group page, open to ARC retirees only.

CULINARY Construction Update

While the drought has been terrible for Sacramento and the agricultural community, the contractors working on the new culinary arts building have used the dry weather to their advantage. The new building phase of the project is on track to be completed by September 2014, at which point the existing culinary facilities will be remodeled and integrated into the building. The entire project is expected to be completed by the end of November 2014. Recently winning an award for design from the Community College Facility Coalition (CCFC), this nearly 20,000 sq. ft. project will expand the learning opportunities

for culinary students and help reduce wait lists for those being turned away as new classes can be added in the future. The new culinary building will house a new Oak CafĂŠ Restaurant more than doubling the current seating capacity as well as providing three distinct laboratory kitchens designed to meet

the unique needs of different aspects of the culinary industry. The new baking laboratory includes its own temperature controlled candy laboratory as well as a retail bakery/cafĂŠ for students to focus on both production level baking and customer service.

A special VIP celebration is planned for Thursday, January 29, 2015 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., for donors who have given to support the Capital Campaign and expansion efforts. More information can be found at facebook.com/ARCFoundation

Memorial funds can be designated for scholarships or direct funding for departments on campus. Please make your check payable to the ARC Foundation, noting the name of the person you wish to honor. An acknowledgement of the gift (not the amount) will be sent to the honoree’s family; please include the appropriate name and address.

Bill Papke

Jim Barr served as an adjunct Psychology instructor early in his career and ended up spending 21 years as the Senior Research Analyst at American River College. Jim will be lovingly remembered for his ever-present smile and gentle humor. He was extremely well respected for the work he did and had a soft spot for underprepared students. The James Barr Scholarship Fund for Underprepared Students has been established in the ARC Foundation office.

Anne Merkel was an active member of the ARC Patrons’ Club. She and the other Patrons ladies made many crafts that were sold on campus and supported student scholarships. Her sister Nell who preceded her in death was also an active and generous Patron. The ARC Patrons Club would like to establish a memorial scholarship in Anne’s name.

Bill Papke passed away on December 4, 2013 in his home of 54 years in Carmichael, CA, after battling lymphoma for over 2 years. He taught Physics at ARC from 36 years from 1957 to 1993. After retirement, he regularly attended and supported theater and music events at the college and was a regular diner at the Oak Café restaurant.
