Summer at Arcola Theatre This summer we’re bringing you a season of new work and festivals. We’ve teamed with Theatre Royal Bath, Ustinov Studio, to present the new play Fifty Words by noted playwright and Academy Award – nominated screenwriter Michael Weller. The play began its run in Bath this past May, and is transferring to Arcola direct from that run. Needless to say, I’ve seen it in Bath and as the early reviews also attest, it’s a stunning work with exceptionally strong performances from the two leads – Claire Price and Richard Clothier. Also of note is that it’s directed by Laurence Boswell, who is not just known for his work in the West End (Ben Elton’s Popcorn, This is Our Youth with Jake Gyllenhaal and Matt Damon, and Up For Grabs with Madonna), but also as the Artistic Director of the Ustinov. Stay tuned for an exciting new co-production with Laurence and the Ustinov to be announced later in the year. We have three festivals this summer starting off with E8 to EH. Last year we presented EH to E8 Festival, which showcased work from that year’s Edinburgh Fringe. This year we’ve reversed it, allowing you to preview work that will be going to the Fringe in August. The Ala Turka Theatre Company returns with Theatre Uncut – a mini-festival of four short plays written by leading UK playwrights addressing the recent UK budget cuts. In order to continue working with our Ala Turka Theatre group, who always present top-notch work, we are dedicating one performance of Theatre Uncut as a fundraiser for the company. Have a look at Ala Turka’s page to read more about the production and the fundraiser. At the end of June, Arcola Creative Learning is once again hosting the Five Boroughs Festival, a weekend of vibrant youth theatre. In July, Creative Learning presents its Summer Programme, which includes work from Arcola 60+ Group, Arcola Academy and Arcola Youth Theatre. Also in July, we are presenting Girl With the Iron Claws in Studio 2, continuing our commitment to family friendly theatre for all ages. Finally, this year marks the 7th year of the Grimeborn Opera Festival. Grimeborn has always been an exciting date on Arcola’s calendar and this year is no different, once again offering an exciting mix of the established and the new. Bigger and longer than ever before, this year’s festival is taking place in both of our Studios over a four week period with additional one-off concerts and operas on Thursdays. Full details of each piece are available on our website and an overview will be available as a Grimeborn leaflet which is downloadable from our website. It’s a stupid word, ‘love’, there should be fifty words for it, like Eskimos have for snow… Brooklyn, New York. Adam is a successful architect. His wife Jan is preparing to start an online company. Their nine year-old son is away on his first sleepover. This will be the first evening they’ve had to themselves in years. But this is one extraordinary night which will change their marriage forever. Filled with the humorous banter of a couple who know exactly which buttons to press, Fifty Words portrays their relationship with searing honesty and in beautifully observed and amusing detail.

Written and performed by Charlie Dupré Theatre Uncut first took place in London in 2011 as a response to the largest cuts to public spending since WWII. The project became much wider in scope in 2012 and included short plays from the US, Syria, Greece and Iceland. Ala Turka will be performing four plays from this project written by UK’s leading playwrights addressing what the budget cuts really mean and who they are really hitting.
