The Vocal Constructivists present
Exquisite Corpses Director Jane Alden Exquisite Corpses throws into juxtaposition British and American experimental compositions that use graphic and open forms of notation. Coming from diverse musical backgrounds, the group draws on a variety of artistic influences — classical, global, avant-garde, eclectic, and performance art.
Focusing on the sexual misadventures of the impotent central character, Encolpius, The Viagron presents both his past and present in an explicit and sometimes humorously vulgar examination of lust and love set against Gieshoff’s aggressively taught score.

Kettlehead Composer Darren Bloom Librettist Neil Georgeson Director Matthew Monaghan Music Director Jonathan Mann Set in colonial Africa at the end of the 19th Century, Kettlehead explores a twisted tale of voodoo and revenge focused on the tragic transformation of a promising young girl into a mutilated social pariah.

Handel Furioso Composer Handel Director Max Hoehn Conductor Julian Perkins Handel Furioso is a love story told through arias and duets, exploring a couple’s life together from childhood to old age. Strekoza i Muravej Composer Brian Hosefros Librettist Vadim Yurchenko Conductor Matthew Waldren Strekoza i Muravej (Grasshopper and Ant) is a re-imagining of the classic Russian fable, following the extravagant Strekoza and the dutiful Muravej. Strekoza’s lifestyle ultimately leads to an evermounting debt; while Muravej’s rigorous nature affords him a promotion and new home.
Dido and Aeneas Composer Purcell Director Chris Parsons and Eboracum Baroque Music Director Chris Parsons A new take on Purcell’s classic, the opera recounts the story of Dido, Queen of Carthage and her love for the trojan warrior, Aeneas. With an evil sorceress and witches at work, this love is short lived as despair and destruction are brought to the Queen’s court.
14, 16, 17 August
The Miller’s Wife Composer and Librettist Mike Christie Director Matthew Gould The Miller’s Wife is an enticing new opera following Bill Marner, the miller, who is forced to flee the village after having a child with his mistress, Maude. Returning nearly 20 years later with his son, William, Bill wants to take his own life when he discovers that William is not his son after all.

Abandoned by her love, she longs for death and thinks her world will cease. But the sun always rises, and her lament becomes a path to new hope and rejuvenation.
30, 31 August
Eros and Psyche Composer Jeff Spencer Librettist Buffy Sharpe Set in the 1950s, Eros and Psyche is based on the Greek characters of Eros (Cupid) and Psyche (his wife) and explores the timeless theme of love; from early infatuation, to the thrill of forbidden love, to the humdrum, abiding love that grows between two people who chose to spend a lifetime together.

Quys and Laila Composer Danyal Dhondy Librettist Buffy Sharpe Director Tarek Iskander The tale of Quys and Laila is a timeless tragedy of undying love.
