When Arcola Theatre was founded in September 2000, we were very aware of the need to establish ourselves as artistically independent. Given the strong Turkish/Kurdish community in Dalston and the Turkish links within the theatre, it was important not to be known just as ‘that Turkish theatre’.

Over the last seven years Arcola Theatre has gone from strength to strength and developed a strong identity both locally and internationally. We have always enjoyed the support of our local community; and now, seven years on, we feel we are able to present our first season of work from Turkey: Orient Express.

The core of the season is two English language plays by writers from Turkey, now living abroad; which are complemented by work from some of Turkey’s finest performers brought direct from Istanbul.

Welcome to the Orient Express Season, a journey seven years in the making.

Cast: Philip Arditti, Rebecca Calder, Jasmina Daniel, Steve Dineen, Christian Flint, Alexander Giles, Helen Johns, Georgina Landau, Beatriz Romilly, George Tardios. Pera Palas, the famous old hotel in Istanbul, is the backdrop for this epic play following three relationships, at three defining moments in Turkish history. From the final days of the Ottoman Empire, through the birth of the Republic, up until the recent Islamic revival, Pera Palas charts the political and cultural changes which have created modern Turkey.
