welcome to arcola theatre’s 10th year
2001
soho
Over the last 10 years Arcola Theatre has taken thousands of theatregoers on a theatrical journey by producing and presenting some of the most diverse and challenging work for the London stage. We have presented plays that have rarely seen the light of day as well as revisit more contemporary playwrights and present the finest International work. Arcola has championed new writers and emerging directors and offered a continuing platform with which to continue their journey. During the next five months we continue what we started and finish the year with a bang. This season’s journey includes two British premieres: The ambitious new play Pieces of Vincent by David Watson, one of the youngest talents I’ve come across in years; and a new play set in Vienna, from one of the most individual voices in British theatre; Snoo Wilson: Reclining Nude with Stockings. There are also two revivals from major dramatists: Martin Crimp’s The Country and Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange. We welcome back the directors Amelia Nicholson (The Shawl, Victory) and Femi Elufowoju, jr (Gods Are Not to Blame) both previous Arcola successes. Our International commitment continues as we welcome the Kali Theatre with a new play set in London and India and, a Merchant of Venice in Japanese. Also in the international repertoire Canadian Judith Thompson’s incredible new play about Iraq: Palace of the End In addition to plays, music has always played a significant role at the Arcola, and this season we are pushing the boat out further than before. After two successful years, Grimeborn is back for two weeks of theatrical innovation with a mix of new and revived operatic works from emerging artists. In Studio two we are presenting Arcola’s first ever dance company C-12 who will be exploring the collision of dance and physical theatre. Finally, to finish the year, I will be directing two musicals – Harold Rome’s Pins and Needles, the 1937 Broadway musical review that will feature Arcola Street garment workers and my first full production of Marc Blitzstein’s controversial The Cradle Will Rock. The journey will continue in 2011 as the theatre relocates to a new space with a full new season of work. You’ll find more details inside.

A hopeful young man, a teacher in love, a pregnant woman, A fearful policeman, a boy on a mission, a pianist in the rain. A wounded man, a grandmother… And Vincent.
Nine lives fractured by the events of one tragic day. David Watson’s thrilling new play tells the story of Vincent, a man adrift in London, whose destiny begins to affect a cast of characters across the country, from the mountains of County Down to the South Bank at sunset. An award-winning creative team transform the Arcola space to create a unique theatre experience. David Watson’s first play was produced at the Royal Court Theatre when he was 17. He is currently Pearson playwright-in-residence at the Lyric Hammersmith. Clare Lizzimore is an award-winning theatre director, credits include Faces in the Crowd (Royal Court) and Tom Fool (Glasgow Citizens/The Bush). Es Devlin is a renowned stage designer, working at the Royal Opera House, the ENO, as well as designing the concert tours of Kanye West and Lady Gaga.

“There’s not a limit to what can be said, only a limit to how honest we are prepared to be” A doctor and his wife move to the country with their children to start a new life, but their rustic idyll is shattered one night by the discovery of an unconscious stranger. Who is the stranger and why was she brought to the house? Fraught with suspense, Martin Crimp’s darkly humorous and compelling play dissects the perfect marriage with cool, cruel precision. ‘Martin Crimp is one of British theatre’s best-kept secrets’ Independent Past productions directed by Amelia Nicholson at Arcola: ‘No psychic powers are needed to see that Nicholson’s engrossing production deserves a West End transfer’ Independent ##### (The Shawl by David Mamet)

Joe Penhall’s multiaward-winning Blue/Orange is a contemporary classic. Tiata Fahodzi’s radically new all-female production delivers a uniquely African perspective. Blue/Orange is a passionate, witty and ultimately devastating exploration of institutional politics, mental health and race. Unfolding like a game of human chess the drama centres on a patient alternately bewildering and beguiling her medical consultants. Her stories of a damaged childhood in thrall to Idi Amin and a precarious urban London upbringing are plausible but are they true? Is it more dangerous to keep her inside than to set her free? ‘I came out of Joe Penhall’s new play in a state of hot, black excitement…’ The Sunday Times on Blue/Orange at the National Theatre premiere in 2000 Tiata Fahodzi was last at the Arcola Theatre in 2005 with its sell-out hit The Gods are not to Blame and returns following their remarkable, Olivier Award nominated, outstanding achievement of Iya-Ile (The First Wife) at Soho Theatre last year.

Harold Rome’s
‘Why don’t you write a piece about all kinds of prostitution – the press, the church, the courts, the arts, the whole system?’
Bertolt Brecht to Marc Blitzstein
Spoofing everything from fascist European dictators to bigots in the Daughters of the American Revolution organisation, Pins and Needles is the hit 1937 Broadway musical review with a decidedly pro-union standpoint.
Set in ‘Steeltown, USA,’ The Cradle Will Rock tells the story of Larry Foreman and his attempts to unionise and battle the villainous businessman Mr. Mister.
Originally conceived as a small scale production for the then striking International Ladies Garment Workers Union, in a basement of a clothes factory in New York, Pins and Needles went on to be the first and only successful Broadway musical review by non-professionals. To celebrate the production’s 25th anniversary, a studio recording was released featuring the then unknown Barbra Streisand.
Originally directed and conceived by the legendary Orson Welles and produced by John Houseman, The Cradle Will Rock has gone down in theatrical history as the musical that defied an attempted ban by USA Federal Authorities with what may have been the most rousing and poignant opening night ever.
Harold Rome’s major musical I Can Get It For You Wholesale was also staged at Arcola with the same production team.
Pins and Needles is staged on the last remaining Arcola Street factory floor – upstairs at Arcola Theatre.

Blitzstein is largely known as the translator of Brecht and Weill’s Threepenny Opera. Arcola’s Artistic Director Mehmet Ergen returns to direct these two significant shows after his hugely successful production of An Enemy of the People. ‘exhilarating’ Benedict Nightingale, The Times (on An Enemy of the People) ‘burning intensity, perfectly pitched in Ergen’s production’ Mark Shenton, Sunday Express (on An Enemy of the People)

future arcola: 2011 and beyond This December Arcola reaches two historic milestones; our 10th birthday and ironically, the final performances in our current home. Whilst it’s been on the cards for a while; the redevelopment of the Arcola building has forced us to make a move. Yet we see this as a real opportunity to secure Arcola’s future in Hackney for the next ten years and beyond. So, in January 2011 Arcola will be leasing another disused factory, the Colourworks building at 24 Ashwin Street, and converting it into new theatre spaces and studios. True to our ethic of sustainability and DIY, we’ll build the spaces with recycled materials, and at a fraction of the cost of many recent theatre developments. Our move to the centre of Dalston will also place us right across the street from both the Dalston Kingsland and the new Dalston Junction Overground stations, as well as on nine bus routes. We’ve got stuck in, but we’ve done as much as we can with the aid of our dedicated volunteers. Now the real building work must begin, and in order to make this dream a reality we will be looking for the first time to you, our Arcola audience for support. We will be launching an appeal in September to raise the £320,000 conversion costs in just one month. Our appeal will bring together art, fashion and theatre and set a challenge for us all. If waiting is not your game, you can get on board when you purchase a ticket online; just hit the Donate Now button.
