WASHINGTON
Skill Level Rating We evaluate the skill level required for your enjoyment on a Arctic Range Adventure tour by assessing a combination of different factors. We take into consideration the technical skill level of the route, the tempo of the trip in regards to the length of each day, the isolation and the expected weather conditions. By looking at all these factors we rate our adventures in the following way: Hiking Skill Level Rating
Canoe Skill Level Rating
Beginner
Intermediate
Moderate hikes with light day pack, courses and activities are suitable for beginners and include necessary equipment and safety gear.
All campgrounds during this hiking vacation are accessible by car. Backpacking is not necessary. For the daily hikes you carry only your lunch, rain gear, camera etc.
Distance per day: 1-7 kms Hiking Time: 3 hrs or less Pace: 1-3 km/hr Terrain: Easy (Pavement, Packed dirt, Sand) Class of Terrain: 1-2 Elevation Gain/loss: 0 – 250 m Altitude: Sea level to 1500 m No altitude impact
Distance per day: 5-15 kms Hiking Time: 4-8 hrs Pace: 2-5 km/hr Terrain: Easy to Difficult (Inclines with loose rock; narrow trails; poor trails, some snow) Class of Terrain: 1-3 Elevation Gain/loss: 0 – 1000 m Less at higher altitudes Altitude: Sea level to 2500 m Sea level to high altitude
Never even sat in a canoe before? No problem! Our canoe programs always start off with an instructional component designed to teach you the skills necessary for safe wilderness travel. A background in camping and paddling is an asset but not necessary. These programs are open to expert and novice paddlers alike. You will appreciate the experienced teaching skills of our patient guides.
Best suited for those with a basic level of wilderness travel. You have been on a few camping trips before and have played around in a canoe or kayak. You should know how to keep a canoe in a straight line and have the stamina to paddle for several hours and carry your personal bag.
Just as a side note we find most people underestimate their abilities. Many of our participants on Expert Level adventures are over 50 years in age. Please call our office if you have any questions regarding your abilities for a particular tour program.
Language Service
Japanese-, Korean-, Chinese-, Spanish-, German- or French-speaking guiding services are available upon request for selected tour dates. 2

Departure Whitehorse Departure Inuvik Departure Whitehorse
Arctic Winter Explorer | Ice Road to the Arctic Sea
8 days guided winter adventure tour in Yukon and NWT Skill Level: Beginner
Join us as we travel overland from the Pacific to the Arctic, along snow covered highways and roadways built of ice along ancient wildlife corridors, and traditional trading routes of First Nations traders - later used by Klondike Gold Rush prospectors and NWMP patrolmen. The route offers some of the greatest geographic diversity in the country; the Tombstone Mountains in the central Yukon are among the youngest mountain ranges in North America, while the low rolling Ogilvie’s with their naked spines were not glaciated during the last Ice Age, and thus are among the oldest. North of the Ogilvie Mountains, the landscape gradually flattens to low tundra and just after crossing the Arctic Circle the Richardson Mountains, the Northern-most extension of the Rocky Mountains, come into view. From there, the roadway will begin it’s descent into the impressive Mackenzie River Delta; 12th largest in the world, to arrive at Inuvik, known as the Place of Man. We will travel to the isolated community of Aklavik, once the region’s administrative centre, locals were slated to be moved to Inuvik, but refused – hence their motto, “Never say die.”, on the Arctic coast, accessible only by a winter “ice-road” constructed out of the frozen ice of the Mackenzie River and the Arctic Ocean. Exploring this remote village we will visit the grave of the Mad Trapper, the mysterious backwoods killer who led Mounties on one of Canada’s greatest manhunts. The tour finishes with a exciting excursions to the Inuvialuit village of Tuktoyaktuk, on the Arctic coast, where we learn about the local history and culture.

Day 02: Whitehorse - Dawson City Prior to the late 1950’s, the only way to travel to Dawson City in summer was on a majestic paddlewheeler like the SS Klondike. Today, we’ll cover the 550km distance in just a few hours. Our route today takes us through the heart of the Yukon interior more or less along the Yukon River valley. We’ll stop for a coffee in the morning at Braeburn Lodge, famous for its massive cinnamon buns, then continue northbound on the Klondike Highway passing through several small native villages and settlements including, Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing. Near Carmacks, the road offers great views of famous Five Finger Rapids

and about an hour outside of Dawson, we’ll stop at the Tintina Trench overlook for views of the expansive Yukon interior with the Ogilvie Mountains beyond that we’ll pass through the day after tomorrow. After check-in, we’ll have a bite to eat, and then we’ll keep an eye out for the Northern Lights, which can often be seen right over the town. Accommodation: Dawson Day 03: Dawson City Home to the world’s greatest Gold Rush, some 50,000 gold seekers arrived here in 1898 making Dawson City the largest town west of Winnipeg and North of Seattle (USA) at that time. The entire community is now a national historic site, and the romance of the Old West can be felt on every corner. Dawson’s unpaved streets and wooden boardwalks are still roamed by miners, hunters and trappers. Parks Canada has restored many of the original buildings including the Palace Grand Theatre, the Commissioner’s Residence and the cabins of Jack London and Robert Service’s cabin, among many others. We’ll travel up Bonanza Creek road to the actual claim where gold was discovered in 1896. Discovery Claim is located near the impressive Dredge #4 National Historic Site and we’ll stop for a photo here as well. In the evening you will have the chance to discover Dawson City’s small but authentic bar scene and you will find many longtime residence who can tell you more tales of the far north. Accommodation: Dawson Day 04: Dawson City - Eagle Plains We’ll get an early start today. The Dempster is one of the truly great Canadian roadways. Completed only in the late 1970’s, the Dempster is still the only fully public road in North America to cross the Arctic Circle. Today’s drive is considered most scenic; Tombstone Territorial Park encompasses the jagged peaks to the West that give the park its name and further along, the Ogilvie Mountains offer superb scenery and stunning vistas. Wildlife is often spotted along the roadsides, so keep a good watch for foxes, the occasional wolf and caribou. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch at a creek-side campground, where gray-jay’s, or ‘camp-robbers’ as they’re known locally will keep us company always happy to help with leftovers. As we arrive at Eagle Plains in the late afternoon/early evening, the modest hotel, fuel station, and highway maintenance station – the only civilization for approximately 300km in either direction - feels like an oasis! Accommodation: Eagle Plains Day 05: Eagle Plains - Inuvik Departing Eagle Plains, our first stop is at the Arctic Circle crossing, where we’ll enjoy a celebratory glass of champagne to commemorate this special occasion. After crossing a mountain range and two rivers (the Richardson’s and the Mackenzie and Peel Rivers), we’ll visit the First Nations community of Fort MacPherson. The famed Lost Patrol, found after they perished by RNWMP Corporal Dempster - for whom the highway is named - is laid to rest here. A former Hudson Bay trading post, some native elders still wonder the village in Hudson Bay print dresses. Inuvik is a relatively young community with an ancient history. The Canadian government commissioned the building of the town in the 1950’s when it became apparent that the nearby traditional village of Aklavik, was slowly sinking into the delta. Inuvialuit people (Inuit, once referred to pejoratively as Eskimos) were also moved down from various points on the Arctic coast. Appropriately, the name Inuvik means Place of Man in the Inuvialuit language. We’ll take a short tour of the village on the way to hotel and you’ll have time to explore the town on foot in the evening. Accommodation: Inuvik
Included • 8 days trip from Whitehorse/Inuvik • 7 nights hotel accommodation • Individual guiding and transportation during the entire tour
• City sightseeing tour in Whitehorse and Dawson City
• Historic First Nation City Tour in Tuktoyaktuk • Overnight stay with First Nation Family
Day 06: Inuvik – Aklavik - Tuktoyaktuk Today will be memorable; we’ll travel by ice-road across the expansive Mackenzie River delta towards the Arctic coast. At the rivers entrance into the Arctic Ocean, the road turns northeast and travels along the coastline of Arctic Ocean toward the village of “Tuk” as it is known by residents. Not far from town, you’ll see the first of several ‘pingos’. These are mountains literally made of ice; heaved-up season after season with the annual freeze and thaw. The tallest is over 100m! We will be met by local guides who will take us on a tour of their unique village. Stops along the way include the historic Lady of Lourdes schooner and some of Tuk’s famous community buildings such as sod houses, churches and the community “freezer”; a hollowed out section of permafrost located deep underground. You’ll also see the Northern Early Warning site (formerly DEW Line) and even get a chance to dip your toe in the Arctic Ocean! You’ll also be invited to a local resident’s home for a glimpse at home-life in a northern community. Accommodation: Tuktoyaktuk

Trip Itinerary “Yukon Quest Dog sledding” Day 1: Arrive Whitehorse. The adventure begins! Arrive Whitehorse. Your guide will meet you at the airport and provide a transfer downtown. On the way to the hotel, the guide will point out some of the city’s main attractions including the SS Klondike National Historic Site, the Yukon Visitor Centre, the Old Log Church and the Log Cabin Skyscraper. The Yukon’s capital city, Whitehorse is Canada’s largest north of the 60th parallel, with a population of around 28,000 people. We’ll also visit the very informative MacBride Museum of the Yukon, which tells the story of the Territory from pre-historic times, through the Klondike Gold Rush to today. With its numerous café’s and galleries and well-travelled, well-educated population, Whitehorse has a surprisingly cosmopolitan feel. But the real beauty of Whitehorse is its proximity to some of the country’s most beautiful natural landscapes, literally just minutes from downtown! Conditions permitting, we’ll have a chance at your first views of our stunning Northern Lights before bed. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 2: Whitehorse-Dawson City. Klondike Ho! We’ll leave the Yukon’s capital city behind for the wilds of the Yukon interior today. As we travel the North Klondike Highway northbound, you’ll begin to get a sense of the sheer size and grandeur of the Yukon. At half the size of Ontario, or roughly the same size as California, the Yukon’s total population is only 35,000 people. Breathtaking doesn’t describe the vastness or the beauty of the Yukon’s wilderness! Our route roughly follows the Yukon River valley and takes us through a few small settlements and villages including Braeburn, Carmacks, Pelly Crossing and Stewart Crossing before the Ogilvie Mountains come into view. The road then drops down to the famous Klondike River Valley that spawned the Klondike Gold Rush of 1898. Still considered the greatest gold rush the world has ever seen, the gold discovery near Dawson City in 1896 drew more than 50,000 people to the Yukon in 1898, making Dawson City the largest city west of Winnipeg (Canada) and north of Seattle (USA)! 10

As a national historic site, Dawson City today still retains its turn-of-the-century pioneer feel. Saloons with batwing doors and buildings with wooden facades, wrapped with wooden boardwalks, line un-paved streets. Straight out of the Old West, this is the Yukon you imagined! We’ll take a short city highlight tour on arrival and point out some of Dawson City’s most famous locations including the Palace Grand Theatre, the former Territorial Legislature (now housing the Dawson City Museum), the Commissioners Residence, the SS Keno and the homes of famous Klondike authors, Robert Service, Pierre Berton and Jack London. We’ll also stop by the official Yukon Quest check point to check on the expected arrival times of the first teams arriving this evening. After checking into the hotel and a bite to eat, we’ll soak up some serious Yukon Quest atmosphere. Overnight in a hotel in Dawson City. Day 3: Dawson City. Experience the Yukon Quest! Today we’ll experience the relaxed pace of Dawson City while we wait for the first team to arrive. The town’s fire siren will announce the first team in, and everyone rushes down to the checkpoint to see who has arrived. To add to the excitement, the first team to arrive is given several ounces of gold by Dawson City as a reward. Spectators will have the chance to meet the mushers and their handlers as they load the sleds and prepare to depart. And of course, you’ll get up close and personal, with the real starts of the show, the 14 delightful Alaskan huskies that comprise each team. Though teams pass through several check points during the race, the Yukon Quest is much more of a test of wilderness survival than Alaska’s Iditarod sled dog race. Teams are required to spend several days between check-points without aid or re-supply, and the Yukon Quest is considered a much more difficult event than the Alaskan race. Yukon Quest teams will be arriving throughout the day, providing many more opportunities for great Quest photos. In between, we’ll visit some of Dawson’s most interesting attractions and gain more insight into the Klondike Gold Rush history. Teams will continue to arrive throughout the day and into the evening, occasionally under the soaring Northern Lights, making for a memorable evening. The more adventurous, have a chance to experience one of the North’s most infamous rituals, the Sourtoe Cocktail, a Dawson City tradition!. Overnight in a hotel in Dawson City. Day 4: Dawson City – Whitehorse. On the road again! Following breakfast, we’ll return to Whitehorse, once again along the scenic North Klondike Highway. During this southbound trip, we’ll stop by the Five Finger Rapids overlook for views of the four impressive chunks of rock in the middle of the river that gave river travelers and paddle-wheelers some difficulty during the gold rush. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 5: Whitehorse. Dog sledding After spending the previous few days watching world-class Mushers, today you’ll get to experience the world of White Fang and Buck for yourself! We’ll travel to a scenic alpine valley located just a short distance outside the city for an introduction to the exciting adventure of dog sledding. You’ll spend the days mushing your own team of Alaskan husky along a winter trail. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 6: Whitehorse. Dog sledding Another day of dog sledding. The swish of the sled’s runners and the panting of the wonderful huskies and the sound of your own heart beating with excitement are the only sounds you’ll hear as we leave civilization behind for the Yukon wilds. We’ll stop for a trail-side lunch cooked over the open fire before returning to the trailhead. While we are enjoying our winter fun, Arctic Range staff will be monitoring the progress of the Yukon Quest leader board. Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 7: Whitehorse – The Finish Line! The first mushers to complete the 1000 miles of Yukon Quest trail are expected to arrive in Whitehorse sometime today. While the mushers can be quite spread out after more than 10 days on the trail, through some of the most remote wilderness in North America, several recent Quests have come down to a sprint finish between two mushers. We’ll be ready to whisk you down to the finish line so you can witness all the thrilling action yourself. Just outside Whitehorse we’ll stop in at the Yukon Wildlife Preserve for views of the many large mammal species that inhabit the Yukon including moose, caribou, musk-ox, elk, mule deer, Dalls sheep and mountain goats! Overnight in a hotel in Whitehorse. Day 8: Whitehorse Time for one last look around town this morning before the transfer to the airport. Check-in for your departing flights. End of tour services.

We will serve a good hearty dinner and then spend the rest of the evening telling you about the country (First Nations) and stories related to the area we are living in. You can enjoy the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) in complete seclusion under the northern sky all night long. Overnight at Private Lake Cabin. Day 4: Snowmobiling, Snowshoeing & Ice-Fishing The next morning, we’ll have a great northern breakfast and then get ready to snowmobile north to see some new country. Our trail to the north of the cabins will be approximately 30 km (return) and will take a good part of the day. We’ll go as far as “the look-out” – an amazing scenic viewpoint, far above the valley floor, where you can see the mountainous country all around for many miles. You can also see the valley of the famous Dalton Trail from the look-out. We’ll have lunch “on the trail”. If it’s very cold out, we’ll make a campfire to keep warm while we’re having lunch. After we get back to the cabins, time permitting, we will either go on a snowshoe trail or go ice-fishing – your choice. Please note that exact timing of most activities are weather-dependent. Another night in complete remoteness let you enjoy the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) under the northern sky. Overnight at Private Lake Cabin. Day 5: Snowmobiling & Return to Whitehorse After breakfast, we’ll have time for a short snowshoe hike or some ice-fishing before we get organized to head back out to the highway where our vehicle is. Return to Whitehorse in the late afternoon and we will transfer you to the airport, check in for your southbound flight.

Golden Circle Tour | Yukon & Alaska
5 days Guided sightseeing and hiking tour in Yukon
The Golden Circle tour contains some of North America’s grandest scenery, wildest places and plenty opportunities for enjoying the Midnight Sun or the Aurora Borealis. This great tour offers totally different landscapes—from boreal forest to coastal rainforest to immense icefields. You can experience native culture and lifestyle by visiting local museums and traditional fishing villages. Both passes, White Pass and Chilkat Pass were used during the Klondike Gold Rush and the towns of Carcross and Skagway still retain the character of those times. Starting in Whitehorse with the more rounded mountains of the Yukon’s interior valley, the South Klondike Highway rises as you approach Carcross and the Southern Lakes region. The road borders some of these large, long, beautiful lakes before rising over the rugged coastal mountains and then descending into the Alaskan Coast, where Skagway and Haines is located. Reaching Haines by Ferry, the Haines Road follows the wide valley of the Chilkat River until it steeply rises through thick forests of hemlock and Sitka spruce to the magnificent mountain scenery of the Chilkat Pass. The road ends in Haines Junction on the edges of Kluane National Park and Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, contains Canada’s highest mountains, the largest non-polar icefield in the world, and a rich variety of bird, plant, and animal life. The park contains over 2,000 glaciers—including valley, alpine and rock glaciers.

Arctic Summer Explorer | Road to the Arctic Sea
8 days guided Summer adventure tour in Yukon and NWT Skill Level: Beginner
Join us as we travel overland on a fascinating route to the Arctic, along untouched wilderness and ancient wildlife corridors, and traditional trading routes of First Nations traders - later used by Klondike Gold Rush prospectors and NWMP patrolmen. The tour finishes with a thrilling excursion to the Inuvialuit village of Tuktoyaktuk, on the Arctic coast, accessible by a gravel road along the Mackenzie River and the Arctic Ocean, where we have the chance to ‘dip our toes’ in the Arctic Ocean.

Near Carmacks, the road offers great views of famous Five Finger Rapids and about an hour outside of Dawson, we’ll stop at the Tintina Trench overlook for views of the expansive Yukon interior with the Ogilvie Mountains beyond that we’ll pass through the day after tomorrow. After a relaxed dinner we pick you up from your hotel for our evening program and visit Diamond Tooth Gerties Gambling Hall with poker game and Cancan-Dance-Girls. Accommodation: Dawson

Day 03: Dawson City After breakfast, we discover Dawson City. A visit to the Jack London and Robert Service cabins and the museum are on the program. A highlight is the drive into the Bonanza and Eldorado Creeks where we visit the historic Dredge #4 and an active gold mine. You have the chance to try your luck panning for gold in the Klondike. In the late afternoon we travel up the Midnight Dome Road for fantastic views of Dawson City and the Yukon River. After a true northern dinner you have the time to explore the city yourself by foot. Later, you have the option to seek once again Northern Lights above the city. Overnight accommodation in Dawson City. Day 04: Dawson City - Eagle Plains We’ll get an early start today and travel to the Dempster Highway. Accommodation: Inuvik Day 06: Inuvik – Tuktoyaktuk Today will be a memorable; we’ll travel along the expansive Mackenzie River delta towards the Arctic coast. Accommodation: Tuktoyaktuk Day 07: Tuktoyaktuk to Inuvik Return to Inuvik. Afternoon and evening free for optional sightseeing and tours. Accommodation: Inuvik Day 08: Inuvik - Whitehorse Transfer to Inuvik Airport, check in, board southbound aircraft. Tour services end on arrival at Whitehorse Airport. Optional evening in Whitehorse or connecting flights.

Yukon River 2D | Whitehorse to Lake Laberge
2 days Guided Canoe Tour on the Yukon River Skill Level: Beginner
Availability Jun. 1 – Oct. 15, 2018
This 2-days canoe trip on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Lake Laberge is specially tailored for visitors who like to travel away from tourist routes, following the trail of the old history, in a moderate timeframe. The tour starts in Whitehorse on the Yukon River with the compass needle set north, and we pass many relicts of the historic gold rush of 1898. The Yukon, meaning “Big River” in Athabaskan, ties as the 2nd longest river in North America (3,185 km) behind the Mississippi and Missouri River. This mighty river starts in the Yukon and empties into Alaska’s Bering Sea. Paddlewheel riverboats continued to travel the river until the 1950s when the Klondike Highway was completed. Today we enjoy the beautiful scenery while paddling down this historic waterway.

From Whitehorse we drive to Carmacks, an historic first-nation settlement. From here we’ll start our canoe tour on the magnificant Yukon River, where we’ll have plenty of opportunities to view wildlife on the river banks. The channel through the Five Finger Rapids is easy to maneuver and with great excitement we’ll continue on the calm stream which many stampeders used to traveled to the Klondike Gold Fields in the late 1800’s. Map Minto
Day 2: Yukon River Today we encounter the famous Five Finger Rapids. One of only 2 real rapids on the entire Yukon River system, Five Finger is in reality 4 large boulders in the river, creating some standing waves. A good test, on your second day, but the guide will review the important info prior to going through the rapids. As we pass through the rapids the valley widens and the river begins to flatten out. We’ll pass by several large bluffs as the river meanders its way in a north-westerly direction. Black bears, particularly in the early part of summer, are easy to spot as they dig for roots and forage for new growth on exposed south facing slopes. Overnight camping near Big Horn Crossing. Day 3: Yukon River - Whitehorse Today we’ll reach Minto, once one of the most important dog (chum) salmon fish camps for the Selkirk people. From here we’ll return back Whitehorse. End of program.
