April 2014

The Volunteer Voice UXO Overview: Volunteer Needed An unexploded device (UXO) was found in the peace park next to Caserma Del Din. The device is scheduled to be disarmed and transported out of the area on 25 April. Due to this event the single soldiers at Del Din will be evacuated to a safe haven on Caserma Ederle. The American Red Cross Vicenza will be responsible for the administration (check-in/out) component of the safe haven. Should the need arise for a full shelter to be stood up, our administration role will continue through the weekend.

March Volunteer of the Month: Georgia Jones

On Thursday, March 27 over a dozen Red Cross volunteers took training to learn about the administrative work needed for the event and to commit to assisting with Safe Haven (and potentially a shelter). Those committed to assisting must also complete the American Red Cross shelter fundamentals training. If you have not previously attended shelter fundamentals training here in Vicenza please let us know so that we can coordinate an online class for you prior to 25 April.

Changes to Volunteer Connection

Red Cross Club March was more low-key than previous months for the Red Cross Club. The club members held a bake sale at the Vicenza High School, selling out of all the baked goods before lunch and earning over $60. The club assisted at the Villaggio Foster home running Sports and Art games one Saturday. Additionally, the club members also were invited to attend an Italian Red Cross meeting. The Red Cross Club also bid farewell and thanks to Andrew Smierciak for all of his work over the past year with the club as he PCSes to Fort Polk.

There has been a slight change to entering hours in Volunteer Connection. Continue to log in, go to “My Profile,” select “Shifts/Hours,” and then “Submit Hours.” Now when you select “Submit Hours” a calendar will appear. Select the date you would like to log hours for. A screen will open for you to enter your hours. Double check the date in this window, as there is currently a glitch causing the window to pop up with the day before you are attempting to enter. Fill out all sections accordingly and select “Save.” If you have any issues, please send an email to Vicenza@redcross.org or stop by the office.

Nominate a Volunteer of the Month See another volunteer doing great work? Nominate them as Volunteer of the Month! The form is now available on VolunteerConnection under “My Chapter” -> “Resources.” Once complete, email the form to Linzi at Linzi.Brown@redcross.org

Don’t Forget: Submit your Volunteer Hours! Volunteer Connection is the place to record volunteer your hours. Instead of logging them on paper, just sign into volunteer connection, go to “My Profile,” select “Shifts/Hours” and log them there. We will review them every week and approve them so that they will show in your record. Log in at https://volunteerconnection.redcross.org

Safety Tip of the Month: Fog     

Drive with lights on low beam Reduce your speed and watch the speedometer because fog creates a visual illusion of slow motion Use the right edge of the road or painted road markings as a guide Use wipers and defrosters as necessary for maximum visibility Listen for traffic you can’t see
