As a lecturer and an author, he took part in many conventions about territorial and environmental planning, analysis and appraisal on environmental impacts, principles of environmental and landscaping planning and bio-engineering techniques. As a freelance engineer, he founded in 1994 the company ARDEA srl, Architettura Design Ambiente. Consultant of many firms specialized in environmental conservation and re-naturalization. Partner for some design of museum spaces from different Museum technical Laboratories.

Ezio Riva Born in Milan (07.02.1952) Architect graduated at the Politecnico di Milano, in 1976. Registered as n°3281 in the register of Architects of Milano. In 1985,he founded his office of architecture in Milan. Professor at the ISA in Monza. Current professor of Refurbishment and conservation of Architecture at the Politecnico di Milano, VI Facoltà di Ingegneria. Since 1987 he has been collaborating with Gianfranco Ferrè, designing some different “concept stores”, not only for dealers of the trademark of GF but also of the front line boutiques, realizing retails all over the world. Partner with the jewelery Vhernier, he designed the first “exclusive boutique” in Milano, Tokyo and Capri, boutiques characterized by a rigorous research of materials and shapes, linked to the new typical features of the same trademark. During his career, he achieved a lot of private dwellings in Italy and abroad (Milano, Paris, Toronto, Moscow, Beirut)

Planning is strictly and directly connected with the so called complex realities of the site which is characterized by different soft energies connected one to another. Making a synthesis, extrapolating each single element/layer of complex reality, is fundamental to read and analyse the context in its whole and to succeed, in a second time, in intervening in an conscious and functional way.[…] Energy as a cultural and architectural vision of the planning process that carefully identifies the overall environmental features of a complex energetic structure, where perception, functions and symbols undergo constant multicultural changes, while relentlessly endeavouring to achieve a consistent stability between shapes, matter and urban developments. Energy as a combination of chemical and physical changes to be taken into account as part of specific design and large-scale town planning solutions in terms of sustainable planning developments that can be achieved through a constant link with the potential moulding solutions offered by the materials, dimensions and qualities of a place. Energy as a vectorial plan analysis of a City scale project , where human beings have feelings and sensorial perceptions, which are part of the concept of “quality of life” and of urban high standards. Such standards are defined in the project, which represents a microcosm, where the colours, the incoming light and the constant succession of protected open spaces does not affect the relationship between the project and its natural and urban surroundings. Energy as a combination of actual and inexpensive solutions that fully take into account the aggressive and complex natural forces involved. Such solutions are crucial to the development of optimal implementation strategies, which are used for selecting the most suitable technologies based on the feasibility of the planning solutions chosen, on the durability of the buildings and on the connection with local building procedures and technologies in combination with a mixture of craftsmanship and technological innovations. Energy as a combination of vectorial fields, which architecture, environmental and urban settlement criteria, the study and combination of the places coupled with the awareness of the functional, historical and symbolic potential offered by different cultural concepts and their amalgamation must be able to furnish with a number of upgrading and flexible solutions to the evolution process that is constantly affecting society, the marketplace and, as a result, human morphology. Energy as the aware planning process of anthropological and large-scale Habitat energy factors, which must enable architecture to boost our sensorial and emotional resources as part of a “new town” concept. Facades and open spaces that are aimed at controlling the energy fields existing while hypothesizing the absence of isotropic spaces characterize the new town. Energy as a concise vectorial planning process of a concept of the world based on the paradox of a linear environmental and technological optimism towards the adoption of humble and sustainable projects.

Campus Point - Politecnico di Milano (LC) Terms of works: 2007 Total Area: 1000 m2 This project is based on the firm determination to complete the new university campus, located close to theformer hospital of Lecco, in the shortest time possible in order to dispose of space, that was itself the subject of research and experimentation, at low cost. A container for research, composed of many additional smaller containers opened towards the city. The structure is composed of 27 industrial, pre-fabricated containers made of glass, steel and wood (2.90 m x 8.11 m x 2.70 m in height), placed up against the façade of the building under renovation. Entirely mortarless and prefabricated, each single element is completely pre-assembled, including cabling and all the necessary fixtures and adduction and discharge pipelines. The elements were combined in just a few days and the cells were piled one upon the other to shape a modern beehive composed of large semi-transparent red pixels. When they are no longer needed, they can be dismantled quickly and easily and re-used elsewhere, an excellent example of sustainable architecture. According to the project, the space is organized industrially, the systems are in plain view and the ribs of the building are not camouflaged by any finish. The lighting-technique project is a result of the collaboration developed since the very beginning of the design project, which also allowed for the implementation of effective lighting at reduced cost for the different stages including development, installationand managementof the entire plant. The lighting project includedthe work environment (offices and laboratories), the façades and the passage ways (entrance and corridors).

Residenza Universitaria "Adolf Loos" - Politecnico di Milano (LC) Project: 2007 Gross ground floor : 5.164 mq Design team: Area Tecnico Edilizia, A.T.E. - Ardea s.r.l. Ing. Arturo Montanelli ed Arch. Ezio Riva Project Manager: Arch. Riccardo Licari Structures: Ing. Carlo Negri Technological systems: TECHNION s.r.l. Ing. Raoul Cassinelli

The residence project develops from considerations and constraints imposed by Sopraintendenza and especially the building facing via Ghislanzoni, in which the university residence will find place, is subject to the bond order. The construction, during his historical evolution, has been modified a number of time. It was therefore concluded that, while the main front will be proceed with a conservative intervention, in the opposite one will be posted new items, consisting of two staircases which serve as escape routes, and a new geometry for the cover that will allow a suitable and functional use of the attic floor. The choices are dictated by the desire to add new elements, perfectly identifiable by the use of new technologies and innovative materials, with a concept of juxtaposition and "reversibility". Indoors, the staircase will be preserved as “historical memory of the existing distribution system. The reuse of the buildings is based on the desire of re-organize the space within the "rigidities" genarated by the stric structures, already partly demolished over time; both principles that can ensure a sufficiently wide range of typologies to meet different needs of a multi-ethnic population now present in the reality of the Polo di Lecco. The access to the structure is located in via Ghislanzoni through an existing fully glazed porch, which provides visibility and a relationship of continuity between the urban area and the student community. That area is designed to host different functions, for example to host meetings and to organize small temporary events. The typology choosen for the building is the hotel one, because it's the most adequate to fit the real needs expressed by the customer. The optimization of existing spaces has led to concentrate most of the common areas in the basement which is directly linked to the garden. The rooms are located from the ground floor to the attic, for a total of five levels. For the common spaces there is the desire to integrate the residence with the university according to a true concept of campus, as all functions related to the study and knowledge, such as teaching spaces, cultural and research (in fact is foreseen a library) that will refer to the provisions in the project of the university; areas for recreation, relax and fitness are an integral part of the residence, which will also be accessible to non-resident students who gravitate in Campus.

VI Facoltà del Politecnico di Milano Project: 2003 Area: 35.000 mq With: Arch. Paolo Bodega Arch. Manuela Grecchi The program requires to overcome the traditional model of the university campus, including some public functions for the community of Lecco, avoiding to turn the university in a urban island, placed in the city but separated from it. The main directions of the project follow the pedestrian ways. Firstly, the direction of North-East / South-West connects University’s inner spaces and exterior public spaces in order to join the exterior spaces of the university with the new Urban park; consequently, a perpendicular direction connects educational and public functions. All the structure is thought to be composed by a modular systems and self-sufficient blocks; different and independent wings of the campus can so be built in separate moments. The layout of the spaces is organized to guarantee the principle of maximum flexibility in reference to some requests of European standard such as environmental sustainability, realized also by considering the life-cycle of the material and immaterial resources.

Vhernir Building, Milan Project: 2008-2009 Customer: Vherneir spa Architectural design, structural and technological system, site management.

This is a restoration of an industrial building in the southern area of Milan. The existing building is an industrial building estate constructed at the beginning of the 50's with relative office annex of little architectural value. Only the trace of the existing construction and part of the buildings facing the road will be preserved. The project team aims at adopting technologies that maximize energetic efficiency and therefore minimize the use of the resources of the planet. This is done both by actions on the structural shell (heat insulation, protection from solar radiation in summer and use of solar radiation in winter, ventilation) and by using an adequate plant type (outdoor sensors, heat generators, regulation, photovoltaic panels architecturally integrated in the covering and front structures).

The trait-d'union theme governing the project is "Living in Nature". This is developed by considering a structured touristic offer with the purpose of giving the clients multiple services, centred on quality life and relax. With this in mind, the project idea aims at including the existing property with other newly built constructions of different types, harmoniously enclosed in the huge greenery, respecting the landscape and environmental characteristics. The hospitality offer is paired by the tourist and residential one, sharing the same goal and economically supporting the project while adding potential to the area.

System 4 Blanc - Algeria Project: 2009 - concept

Customer: Sonartrach - Edilsider Architectural design, structural and technological system, site management, security coordination, interior and landscaping design

The urban layout is thought as a group of small yards developed on a square mesh. Depending on different spatial requirements, this square mesh can be repeated or interrupted. In this situation, the system of aggregation extends in a linear way over the site project, defining groups characterized by different order of magnitude. The groups are developed around a landlocked garden, protected from wind and sun, creating yards characterized by entrances facing on a service road, while all the windows open toward the private garden. The urban square is spread over a pattern of side approximately 40 m.

Studio accomodation - site plan of a square aggregation of units

Within the scheme, are included a number of living units of 5x5 m; they are clustered for homogeneous kind of users. In this way, we have two kinds ok accommodation: VIP or study.

Studio accomodation - B

Studio accommodation: cozy rooms, protected by a series of sliding screens, the individual accommodation then opens on an exclusive deck, facing a common garden, used for social occasions and to meet people. VIP accommodation: rooms with intimate and evocative atmosphere, provided with an outdoor deck, an exclusive garden and a tea pavilion to meet and receive guests and friends. Moreover, it is also provided a common garden, protected and shaded, with a direct access on the city streets.

Riqualificazione palazzo INA, Ragusa Competition

First phase: August 2009 Second phase: February 2010 With: Velasco Vitali

The theme of the project is to increase and redevelop the value of Piazza San Giovanni in Ragusa, through the requalification of Palazzo INA, currently municipal building In this palace, we introduce a luxury hotel and many public services: a museum of Modern Art for temporary exhibition, a panoramic restaurant, a lounge bar and some common covered spaces, thought as the continuation of the square and as the connection between San Giovanni’s square and the inner courtyard. The hotel takes up a wing of the building, with the hall and the main entrance placed on the ground floor. The museum occupies three floors of the building, with several exhibition halls, a bookshop and a cafeteria placed on the ground floor. The three levels are connected through an empty space deigned to receive works of art of great dimensions and an exhibition path which lead to the restaurant. The panoramic restaurant is placed on the last floor and is characterised by sliding windows that can be completely opened realizing a spatial continuum between the terrace and the inner spaces. Services areas and storage room are placed on the basement and are directly connected with the kitchen through lift. The interior space are so completely redesigned through some demolitions, for example the irregular volumes on the third and the fourth floor which break up the linearity of the building. At the same time, the facades are completely modified in order to have a new imagine. For the main façade facing Piazza San Giovanni is mould a new skin by studying present and ancient alignment between Palazzo INA and the porch of the square and by analyzing and abstracting the “sfilato Siciliano”, a typical Sicilian lace. The outcome is a sculpture, three-dimensional textures which creates lights and shadows effects and represent a sign of an ancient memory of a cultural and artistic expression. The new facade becomes in this way an artistic scene and symbolically the square represent the public.

Competition Parco Levante, Cesenatico (FC) Competition 2006 With: Arup Italia

The tradition of bathing “salus per aquam”, is actualized through new and advanced technologies of modern spas. Water pervades the entire planning area and laps the main buildings, being their indispensable feeding source, H2O becoming so the fundamental sustainable energetic resource of the spa system. Water, inside the project area, is the fundamental means through which one can have an unbroken perception of the sea with its colours, its noises and all the sensations it provides. The construction of a floating pier with a terrace facing the beach, strengthens the link with the sea, offering an island spa, a "sponge" in the sea to complete the process of osmosis with the marine environment. Support seaside tourism to a spa can give more value to the project thinking of allowing a single set available throughout the year. The pursuit of architectural and landscape quality sprang from the idea of an organic system typically connected to the sea environment reminding of volume, mass and lightness concepts. The “Sponge” structure gives a sense of unity, complexity and uniqueness. At the same time, it offers transparency and its shape can be modified by removal of material. The sponge image is the starting point of the whole planning process taking shape in the spa and the hotel structures. These two huge, monolithic buildings are hollowed to shelter the facilities and they lie on water in order to exploit water and sea healthful and beneficial properties: “salus per aquam” ( health by water) as Romans used to say. The architectures of the complex are based on: 1) Overcoming of the concepts of wall and cover as separating elements that clip a space in the space. 2) Search of the creation of an environment by moulding materials. 3) “Sponge-wall” - Permeable element allowing connections between the spaces through direct perceptive communication. - Paradoxical hollow structure, though elaborated at architectonic level, in order to design a space and its surroundings in order to give a three-dimensional view. The project is based on a path with induced currents and areas of relaxation, where bathers can linger and enjoy the treatment of water in a quiet area with several whirlpools. The perforated structure of the "Sponge" allows a controlled game of light and visual perception, which recreate the interior particularly striking and, simultaneously, draw the environment.

Luxury Hotel, Serpiano (CH) Interior design and landscaping With: Paolo Galletto (render)

The luxury hotel is located in a particular place that generates the shape of the building: a spiral lips. Edges and bushes mark the land with large waves and protected paths cross the wide green areas. Flowers draw islands with different seasonal colours, textures and scents. Pergolas build the terraces with flowers and climbing trees that embrace the building and make it a part of the place. Each suite has its own exclusive design and special features: rough materials reproduce the atmosphere of the natural environment inside the room. A fireplace build with splitted slabs of stone slabs is the centre of the suite. Branches of birch wood embrace the bed in the middle of the natural spaces. Upholstered walls and semitransparent partition make the room wider. At the top floor we can find a Mediterranean conservatory with flowers, lemon and orange trees, and a restaurant with a terrace overlooks the valley. The bar desk as the fireplace of the rooms is made with splitted slabs of local stones, while the display system is cut out into a wall of vertical garden. In the restaurant and the lounge are created different area for different groups of people. Light and transparency effect play important decorative roles, as soft colours. The spa is characterized by the use of rich materials: fire, heat, air and transparency create an evocative atmosphere. Entrance of a suite

SPA, sport and relax building in Samara (Russia) Architectural and Interior design, mechanical and structural design and landscaping

The project represents the extension to an existing villa on the banks of river Volga. It is built around a tennis court and it includes some sports facilities, a SPA, some rooms for guests and a space for family parties. Everything is mainly underground and protected with great roof divided in triangles to look like a folded piece of paper. The roof is covered with earth and grass to minimize its impact on the site. The interior is designed to confirm the continuity inside/outside. The same materials are used both for the flooring in the portico and in the covered spaces inside the house. All the materials are selected in the range of natural tone and rough finishing to get a touch of easy and natural environment. The SPA area provides space for sauna, Turkish bath, vitality pool and experience showers. It is finished with mosaic and stucco in lighter colours vibrating in different shades of whites and greys.

Villa Bianca - Viale Geno, 6 (CO) Project: 2008 - in progress Gross ground floor : 1.740 mq Area: 2100 mq Customer: The Carlyle Group Architectural design, structural and technological system, site management, security coordination, interior and landscaping design

This is a recovery project of a building with industrial and residential destination located on Viale Geno, (one of the most prestigious roads of Como). The building is redeveloped with a sensitive design approach focusing on its relation with the landscape and the lake. The recovery project provides a reflection on the status quo from a structural, architectural and technological point of view. The project involves the construction of eight large apartments, with lake views, a spa, an underground parking for residents, and finally an extensive garden. Sharply geometric designs trace out a clean, minimalist structure, defined through the clarity and simplicity of its combined elements: stone, wood, glass and marble, in a harmonious flow of unbroken spaces from indoor to outdoor. The rigour of stone brings out the light transparency of the glass; wood lends sophistication to traditional local construction techniques; while marble accentuates the brightness and the alternation of light and shade. Villa Bianca’s recovery project of harmony and contrast expresses the architectural idea of being conceptually similar to nature. The design process behind Villa Bianca is inspired by the purest minimalism. The architecture stansd out for its semplicity. It express itself through the presence of objects and ornaments, and the semplicity of details. Even its name, Villa Bianca, is a declaration of intent: withe gives harmony and prestige to the structure, elevating it to noble status. Plans of some levels | Architettura

Show room Stone Italiana, Milano Terms of works: 2009

The showroom occupies a total area of 400 square meters, and interconnects the ground floor, which is dedicated to temporary exhibitions, to the basement floor, whis is dedicated to the permanent exhibition of the company products. The project aimed at creating a neutral space, taking away the unnecessary, with the goal of a minimalist and flexible space. Surfaces and details characterising this showroom were dramatically reduced only to the presence of the raw material, main character of this essential space where the single elements are marked out only by the chromatic and surface finishing variables.

Restaurant "Officina di Enrico", Omotesando Road, Tokyo Terms of works: 2006

This restaurant, located in Omotesando road, the heart of Tokyo, is the first concept restaurant for an Italian chef, Enrico Derflinger. The aim is to create in Japan a place where clients can discover the essence of Italian culture. The restaurant is composed by 3 rooms with different characters: the Brasserie, the Winery and the Lounge. The kitchen is the “Officina”, a laboratory where Enrico creates his dishes. The “Officina” is open to the Brasserie, it’s a sperimental place where the chef cooks directly on the restaurant room and where the clients “enter” in the kitchen. As in a laboratory, in the “Officina” walls and ceilings are left bare concrete. The winery is the main restaurant room; it is so called because people eating there are sourronded by wine: customer would enjoy to select the wines in a relaxing atmosphere. In the lounge, placed on the upper floor, we have a red curved ceiling: this colour reminds the wall paintings in Pompei.

A concept that, over the years, has been always verified in closed coordination with Gianfranco Ferrè himself and that has always respected his passion for the 'Architecture' presenting special spaces organized by special architectural volumes and important architectural features: an important staircase, a special dome, a dramatic void on a multilevel space, an extra long presentation corridor, ....... Everywhere materials, texture and color are used with a very true combination with the purpose of emphasize each others; colors have changed over the years from a total black and white, to a beige and dark brown, to a rich experience of multiple wood veneers and waxed red stucco walls, back to a full white atmosphere driving the trend of the store style around the world.

A jewelers store in the historical center of Monza, a large open space dedicated to a multi-brand activity displayed along a long wall which is designed to be finished with a mirrored finishing and hanging showcases. Each showcase is supported by rough cut trees branches to contrast with the clean and neat concept of the space. Dark gray oak wood veneer come together with acid treated saddle leather tables to continue the contrast which is pushed up to use trunks finished with polished resin or silk rugs ruined with acids. It’s a game which is done to emphasize the richness and the peculiarity of the jewelers which are sold in the store.

Operative Room

Operative room with yellow dental chairs

Dental clinic Architectural and Interior design

Usually everybody doesn't like to go to the dentist: it is usually an unpleasant place where people is afraid to suffer and to have terrible pains. You always find everywhere white and stainless steel hygienic furniture and instruments with strong neon lights which do not help the clients to relax. What is the site usually today intended as “the placeâ€? for relax and wellness? where the people goes to take care of himself and with the purpose of losing some times to get a better quality of life? The SPA: this was the most incredible combination: the SPA (relax and wellness) and the dental clinic (the most stressful medical center); a nice task, a nice experience and a real chance to make something new. First of all from the point of view of the palette of colors and of the materials which seems to be so different; second item the space organization that would have required a certain number of equal operation rooms to be repeated along a corridor but even organized with a certain number of spaces of relax for clients and doctors that would have helped in creating some bays to interrupt the serial construction. The colors: we do have almost eliminated the pure white which do not appear in any space: mainly the colors of the operative rooms are played in a scale of tone related to the different greens and mauves, almost the colors of the vegetation along the calm internal waters or of the pounds (it reminds to me some place of the Hamptons during the early spring). The flooring and the ceiling at the corridors are finished with dark wood (wengĂŠ) which is also used for the cabinet as well, placed as a partition between the corridor and the operation rooms, they are made more rich with some bronze niches, lightened with small led light provided with changing color system. A dark path that helps the relaxation process. Strong yellow mango leather has been chosen for the dental chairs, the sole strong element of color that make contrast with the palette but does not exit from the contest. All the common spaces are provided with a very soft music system that take care of the client while he waits. Each operation room is provided with its own private music system. Each dental chair is provided with a flat screen that can be used to show the client his own schedule and program of treatments, or result from the x ray, while he his sitting at the chair, or, while the doctor is operating consent to relax the client with a movie or any kind of DVD.

Private flat in via Morigi, Milano Terms of works: 2008

The intervention bares a series of renovation works in the internal finishing, apart from the partial transformation of the division of spaces. In particular, there will be a complete replacement of the sanitary services divided into three single units, two of them adjacent to the entrance hall and the third one next to the external south wall of the building. This way there is the space drawn for a third room destined to be a bedroom. The entrance hall's west wall is partially substituted by a large sliding panel so as to improve the flexibility of the spaces. The open space remains untouched except for a partial "invasion" of the wall separating it from the rooms. It is also foreseen to position, in the least illuminated part of the free space, some small accessory spaces to be used as store rooms. The intervention is one of a kind for having a clean space image, essential in its forms and colours.

Penthouse in downtown Milano, Via Montenapoleone Terms of works: 2010 Architectural de~sign, structural and technological system, site management.~

A two floors Penthouse for two hundred square meters for an art collector, a clean and neutral space featured with simple volumes and soft colors ready to receive important pieces of art. The project has remodeled the full top of the building with new light metal structure and metal roof made in preoxidized copper which includes the upper floor windows and balcony. The lower floor façade repeats the partitions of the building façade underneath with new and different materials: the central partition is made with an alternation of large windows and cedar wood panels, the two side parts repeat the lower floor ‘serizzo’ slabs with a bush hammered finishing to get a much whiter color. A canopy, made in varnished aluminum with adjustable louvers, is built above the lower floor terrace finished with a wooden deck.

Ezio Riva private apartment in Milano Architectural and Interior design

When an architect has to design his own home he faces the most difficult project: doubts come everyday more and more evident; any decision seems to be the 'Decision' that will drive you to your goal: design something that is representative of your own philosophy, of your own life style. My home is built along a long simple gray bookshelf where I collect all my books about design, architecture and architects. It is like the spine of the home, everything depend from it and is designed from the partition of the shelves. The color of the bookshelf is the color of the home that is defined by the different texture of the different materials: gray matt veneer for the wooden paneling of the boiserie, dark gray matt mdf for the kitchen furniture, gray matt and waxed paint at the walls, gray cement finishing for bathroom floor and walls, gray erable for the dining table with dark gray metal chairs and, finally, black leather for sofas and armchairs. One unique mono-color that is then broken by some strong spots like the violet velvet sofà or the orange carpet. All the pièce of furniture, when are not expecially designed for this home, are sample of the History of Design:pieces of Sotsass, Joe Colombo, Eames, Hoffmann, Castiglioni, Mendini and others have been selected to complete the space.

Villa C. - Besana Brianza (MI) Terms of works: Area: Covered area:

2001-2003 14.000m2 1.200m2

The villa handels the theme of identification with the landscape and integration between interior and exterior spaces. The building appropriates the open space by tracing a series of directions that, in some cases, define covered interior spaces, and in others covered but exterior spaces or spaces that are completely opened. The volume of the construction is arranged predominantly in a horizontal developed, a front elevation formed of wellproportioned rectangles, and the building therefore appears as extended on the ground, almost as if it were part of it. The finishing details, the large irregular slabs of gray stone laid of opus incertum for the pavements, the wood used for the light parts of the construction and the internal partitions and terracotta tiles of the faรงade, are designed with particular care, and have been combined attentively with the fundamental elements of the construction. The completely natural and untreated materials bring the house closer to nature.

Villa Verdi Acque, Fiumelatte - Varenna (LC) Terms of works: Covered area:

16

1999-2003 450 m2

14 13 The project becomes a clear expression of the imitation of the natural environment obtained through different means: the typical lake terraces and the stone walls being the main characteristics. Thanks to these characteristics, the architecture of the place fully becomes part of the landscape without modifying its residential character. The buildings are so designed to completely respect the natural steep slope conformation which is made of artificial terraces and furthermore, they do not change the origin of the slope in harmony with the human-environmental ecosystem. The fact of being architecture in the landscape becomes evident in the building cladding which is made of the local stone (Varenna black) giving the construction the appearance of a strong connection to the ground. The fusion between natural and human spaces appears through the wide openings that frame the wonderful views of the lake, and, at the same time, they break with the massive look of the building, inserting it harmoniously in an inside-outside continuum.

Casa di Pietra, Fiumelatte - Varenna (LC) Terms of works: Area: Covered area:

Site plan 1:20000

2000-2002 1.800m2 700m2

The idea of creating a compact architecture comes from a double objective: the respect for the environment restraining the building’s connection to the ground and the respect for the panoramic views of the lake. The perfect shapes and the morphology of the architecture with their simple and linear geometry, are harmonically inserted into a flourishing natural context thanks to the use and combination of different materials, such as the local stone, wood, steel, glass all put together and mixed to obtain the right balance of colours and perceptions. The glass gutter that runs along the perimeter of the house becomes an element of lightness and unity. The emptiness of the shapes is interrupted by transparent cuts on each side, which allow the landscape to be a virtual part of the built space, so that a never-ending reciprocal exchange can be created between the architectural and the natural reality. This exchange is evident even in the continuum of the materials such as the stone and chestnut wood covering on the floor which is the same inside and outside. We can define it as an organic and rational architecture at the same time, appearing as a type of sustainable building concept, assuming its significance by existing in that place in harmony with its context.

Villa Verdi Acque, Perledo (LC) Terms of works:

2003-2008

The project consists on the recovery of two rustic buildings and on the realization of four small accomodations. The presence of natural areas and rural artefacts brought the philosophy of an organic recovery, with respect for the natural maintenance of historic and simple materials as rough stone, wood oxidized and “cotto. The architectural design of the interventions took place by a set of keywords: _ Light _ Water _ Stone Light is one of the singularity of this place in its seasonal variability and climate, and leans to the reflection of the mirror of the lake on which overhang the village. Water is the constant presence and reflection of the village of Perledo in its unity. It is the reference in the design development of all individual openings of residences. The stone is part of the natural outcrop within the structure of housing, is the historical presence and its artefacts in the cobbled Contrade, maintained the existing flooring and rough behind the scenes of stone walls with their continual diversity. The intervention played with a continuous alternation of declared material recovery and reporting of new architectural forms. The materials of the new structure is rough and creates a contrast between steel, wood and stone. The structure of the new unit is based on the existing layout. The works of recovery were made using materials and finished with the most similar to the original ones, excepting for the emphasis of new material and formal elements. The new layout is directed to an adaptation of the living space, according to the changing needs of living.

Residence park "Sant'Andrea", Menaggio (CO) Terms of works: 2008 Terrain area: 12.000mq Covered area: 4.000 mq

Site plan “Parco Sant’Andrea is completely integrated in the landscape thanks to a morphological composition which foresees, due to the volumes, an elongated development parallel to the existing terraces, exploited as ideal plans for the positioning of the living units. This kind of plan organization together with the prevailing horizontal lines that characterise the buildings, gives the lakefront an homogeneous and precise appearance. Glass and steel are included into the natural environment due to the objective of integrating the vegetation with the whole project. Thanks to the choice of creating roof-gardens and flat green roofs, the different volumes of the living units vanish in the global view of the hill so that an eco-friendly purpose is better pursued. Residence "Il Giardino" - Menaggio (CO) Project: 2006 - in progress Gross ground floor : 1.350 mq Area : 4.465 mq

“Il giardino is completely integrated on the landscape thanks to its morphological composition. This project consists on the realization of 13 terraced houses, organized on 5 levels, gently placed on the ground as volumes parallel to the existing terraces. Every house is characterised by a wide glazed pavilion, facing the lake of Como and a private garden. In the gazed pavillion we can find the living room, the master bedroom and the guest room. The service areas as the kitchens, the bathrooms, storage spaces and studios are placed on the basement, with the entrances of the apartments. A staircase and an inclined panoramic lift connect the underground parking with the apartments. The buildings are integrated on the landscape thank to its morphology, the choice of materials (glass, wood and stone) and the study of gardens. Thanks to these architectural decisions, the built volumes vanish in the global view of the hill.

New Hospital Sant'Anna - Como Project: 2003 Total floor area: 15 ha Covered floor: 40.000 mq Customer: Hosptal Sant’Anna, Como With: Arch. Paolo Bodega, Ing. Giuseppe Rustignoli This project includes evironmental design and support equipments for the hospital as parking areas, the main entrance and the system of infrastructures. The project area is so caracterised by many different and complex uses. The system of open spaces, formed by alluvial plains for farming, seems to have a great environmental value, althougth it can be considered as low value typology. Considering the parking area, it is located in a strategical position, next to the wide natual complex of “Val Grande”. The ground is almost flat, with the exception of the boundaries hills of Lucino Alto, which border part of the site. All these elements, which from the hills and the woods of “Val Grande”, are the basis for the planning process and the enveronimental analisys.

Desalination plant - LIPARI (ME) Project: 2009 - concept Customer: SIBA S.p.a.

The project is the construction of a plant for desalination of sea water reverse osmosis potable water to the waterworks system of the island of Lipari (ME). The plant will be divided into three identical lines that will ensure the flexibility of production demand. The architecture adopted is to build the new facility, at the same site of the existing plant, replacing existing modules with new modules for reverse osmosis RO. The plan as conceived, together with the strengthening of the sampling system and lifting, in addition to immediate benefits, allowing future expansion of the plant with the construction of a new unit. The design strategy proposed provides an approach of “consistency with the environment, where despite strong rigidity of the lay-out technology is intended to be to establish a dialogue with its surroundings in terms of natural colors, material aspect and vegetation.

Feasibility and preliminary design o fan integrated system of the touristic - infrastructural mobility of the lake of Lecco. Terms of works: 2011 Distance: 200 m Customers: DEUTSCHE BANK S.p.a

We can try to sum up the planning phases that bring us to define the new touristic harbour of Parè , Valmadrera in the following steps: - analysis of the site, - study of the laws in force - study of a navigation way with the seasonal evaluation of the frequency of the service and the amounts of boats and their typology. Afterwards, we examined the site of intervention, developing several design solutions. Underlining the existing bicycle paths, we proposed to integrate and enlarge them, in order to increase the value of the lakeside and to connect in a sustainable way the villages and many districts facing the lake, as well as attractive places. A system of paths in the landscape connect the new harbour to the neighbouring town. We increase the number of berthing of about 100 units, and introduced in the existing context several services and public functions, as restaurants, shops and a beach. The study of urban traffic that takes root in the region allowed us to develop a hypothesis of intervention that respects the environment and the landscape.

a net of tubes in the courtyard of Via dell'Orso 16

Spazio Geberit, Milano, Brera Design Distric - Fuorisalone 2011 Terms of works: April 2011 Customer: Geberit Architectural design, system, works direction.

A tangle of tubes suspended in the air welcomes the visitors of Geberit exhibition, placed in Brera district; a tangle that, from the courtyard of Via dell’Orso 13 enters in the exhibition space and transports water into wall made by slabs of recomposed wall. Water falls into linear drainings: these elements gain a strong aesthetic value, becoming part of the s pavement pattern. Geberit products, invisible and essential, became so evident characters of architecture and its natural completion, in an organic whole, coexisting in a careful and perfect balance of shapes, colors and material and connecting the exterior and the interior spaces. Every room of the location is dedicated to a specific product, combined with natural materials characterised by neutral colours. The installation aims at improving enhancing Geberit know – how: the visitor can can touch, test, feel and experience the innovation and the technology.

In April 2011 during of the Fuorisalone 2011 Arturo Montanelli presented the prototype "Riccio". "Riccio" is a table, a challenging idea, a materials contamination that bring forward trends. The rhythmical of stainless steel stems supports a DNA URBANO plate, a new material was born by StoneItaliana. Essential in its forms, just like prickles of hedgehog, contains the story of Milan. If you take a careful look you’ll find microchips, pieces of colour glasses, slim iron lines, corianders of aluminium and precious sprouts. Afterwards the success obtained during FuoriSalone, "Riccio" is exhibited at " il Palazzo della Farnesina e le sue Collezioni". It's become so a piece of the prestigious design collection COLLEZIONEFARNESINADESIGN.

On the occasion of the Fuorisalone 2011, Stone Italiana and Greenwood realized with Arturo Montanelli an installation where different but conceptually similar materials contaminate themselves, creating a striking game of textures, horizontal and vertical layers. These materials are recomposed quartz and marble surfaces and a mixture of a flour of row wood and a special plastic element.

OFF LEASH, Venezia, Spazio Thetis - XII Biennale di Architettura di Venezia With: Velasco Vitali Terms of works: June - November 2010 Architectural design, system, works direction Sponsor: Edilsider SpA - Calolziocorte LC Filippo Montanelli Gaiatto Art - Venezia Sipam SpA - Rovagnate LC Stema - Mariano Comense CO Stone Italiana SpA - Zimella VR The idea of a travelling museum was born thanks to the affinity between researches and paths of Arturo Montanelli and Velasco Vitali, linking technical and artistic aspects in an organic whole. A travelling museum is thought and designed to fit itself in every place. The symbolic travel from the landing to the unconscious becomes the museum's path: a long tunnel that leads us towards the civilization through works of art, crossing a series of columns stylized using a stack of fruit crates. “Off Leash” is a definition which resumes two contrasting visions: a leash leads, educates, imparts rules, and, the meantime, restrains, limits, sets a boundary. The project-installation implies different subtle meanings but they can all be condensed in one concept: a perfect blend: a blend of people, cultures, races, arts, identities and varieties. It is a synthesis of a spontaneous movement towards new perspectives, a macro-drawing where it is necessary to take into consideration even those elements that cannot be seen, because the landscape, as Gilles Clément claims, is what you can see when you stop looking at it, like complementary colours. The installation is placed in “Spazio Thetis”, where it a collateral event of the 12th International Architecture Exhibition called “Culture-Nature” took part. The prototype is composed by a container and a solar chimney, that allows a natural air circulation. The prototype is a module that can be repeated, as in project of the installation fot the Pier 54 in New York, designed by Montanelli and Vitali where a group of 14 containers realised an ehibition tunnel.

A 360 degree creative artist: from design to imposing architecture, landscape interventions and then art. How can Arturo Montanelli be defined? «My restless personality always turns on a new desire of trying experiments, of progressing in the search. I keep on discussing and comparing, trying cultural contaminations and approaches to new technologies». Arturo Montanelli and Velasco Vitali, two person of Lecco who surprise Venice with “Off Leash”. How did the idea of a touring museum start and what are the affinities between such creative artists? «The fundamental linking point is the passion for the matter: to give dignity to the poor materials that in their articulation acquire nobility and become works of art. We started with Extramoenia, exhibition prepared in Palermo first and then in Palazzo della Ragione in Milan. Working on this project in his new study in Sicily, he had the idea to create an installation at the Pier 54 in New York on the subject of half-cast and the mix of cultures that keeps regenerating. In Venice, the touring museum is made of a mix of black gravel to be recycled. The attempt is to create a monomatter area not to prevail on the exposed works». You created harmonic combinations between historical building and very modern building, both for the materials and for the applied technologies. How do you define your approach with the existing architectures? «I come from a landscape preparation, so before I start a project, I try and

read the identity of the place and its hidden values. I apply the same criterion when I have to work on an industrial or historical building: the attempt is to stress the existing positive elements and to establish a dialogue between the ancient and the modern with a project that has a clear line. Once again the matter is the protagonist, few materials are selected to have a code of architectonical language. These materials are the result of a very high contemporary technology and they are selected for particular color effects obtained by the reflection of the light. The starting point is to avoid creating a historical fake work, but to respect the existing one with declared clear interventions». The realization of the cycling-walking track in Abbadia Lariana could represent a turn in the territory, an incentive for a form of sustainable mobility. What criteria did you follow to develop your project? «The project was studied together with the architect Paolo Bodega, he won the contest for the realization of a cycling-walking track, it has to be positioned on the same area of the freeway which connects Lecco with Abbadia Lariana. Our intuition was to have the track as close as possible to the water and regain about 6 kilometers of coast, beaches and path that were abandoned, due to the freeway construction. So we thought to propose an infrastructure in order to reuse the stretches of sand and the elements of the road under the freeway in order to use them for free time and sports activities».

*>ÀV Ê-> ̽ `Ài>Ê Ê i >}} Ê "® Quando il paesaggio diventa abitazione

Parco Sant’Andrea - La visione del progettista Intervista all’Ingegner Montanelli

iLiÀ Ì\Ê >ÊÛ ÃÌÀ>Ê `i Ì ÌDÊ` Ê«À }iÌÌ Ê>««>ÀiÊ Ì Êv ÀÌiÊ i iÊ vostre realizzazioni.
