INTRODUCTION

This book illustrates an eleven-week typographic research project. It is meant to give an overview and provide critical analysis on the findings as well as the process itself. The process involved the exploration of one or more books for each of the eleven weeks. In addition to studying the use of typography within each book, photos and notes were to be posted to a website blog at the end of each week. The research itself was very useful because it allowed for a wide range of exploration. Students were exposed to many different types of typographic explorations but I feel as though the project lacked a specific goal. The goal was to create a 16-page signature outlining the research, but I feel as though this was too vague. If the project required students to create a book based on a certain type layout or grid system that they found throughout their research, this would have given students a more specific goal to work towards. The findings in this book show a great deal of exploration. I tried to look at works from many different countries as well as different eras. I wanted to use one of my findings as a design element for my process book. Throughout my exploration, especially in week eight, I observed the use of line in conjunction with text. I was interested in the way line was used to complement type and I used the idea as a starting point when designing this process book. Overall this project allowed me to explore many different uses of type and typesetting, as well as different uses of the grid system. This was a great way to further explore the field of typography.

Visual Communication: From Theory to Practice Written by: Jonathan Baldwin/ Lucienne Roberts Design and Art Direction: Bob Wilkinson/ sans and baum I loved the blueprint style in which the first few pages were set up, mainly the way the information at the top was placed within these partially closed off boxes. The use of line to complement the text was great throughout the book.
WEEK TWO RESEARCH

Swiss Graphic Design: The Origins and Growth of an International Style Written by Richard Hollis What I loved about this book is all the different examples of Swiss design. Mainly I loved the way they structured their graphic design, and their interaction of type and image is very interesting.
WEEK THREE RESEARCH

WEEK FOUR RESEARCH American Design Century: Potlatch Design Series Vintage: Typography Book Design: Pentagram/San Francisco Text: Delphine Hirasuna This week I decided to focus on typography and found this really cool book about different typefaces. I also like the very simple look of each page where the informative text is very minimal compared to the imagery.

Novum: World of Graphic Design Layout by Malgorzata Wrzodak This week I decided to look at a magazine rather than a book. The magazine still offers insight about graphic design but I was mainly focused on the overall layout of the magazine, trying to find grid system ideas that I could implement into my design.

Letters From the Avan-Garde: Modern Graphic Design By: Ellen Lupton and Elaine Lugstig Cohen Published by Princeton Architectural Press What I found to be interesting with this book was the use of line to support type. I also thought it was an interesting idea to mark the beginning of a new sentance with a red square. It adds another level to the type.
WEEK TEN RESEARCH

Grids: Creative Solutions for Graphic Designers By: Lucienne Roberts This book gave an overview about the use of grids in graphic design. I thought it would be interesting to view the way they used the grid as well as image in combination with typography.
