Applause, please, for our Media Partners:

WELCOME from the Producing artistic Director I’ll never forget the first time I heard Charlotte’s Web. I was in 3rd grade. Once a week someone’s mom came to our school and we would all sit in a circle on the rug and listen to her read this story. She would read to us for a while and, as a chapter would end, the mom would close the book and I can still so clearly remember thinking, ‘And then what happened?!” I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next. I thought it was the greatest story I had ever heard. Terrence J. Nolen

When I was a kid, I loved plays and books and pets. I still do. Now I get to read books and think about if they’d make good plays. And I have five pets: three dogs, a cat and a horse. (No pigs, but my wife wants one someday. Plus a goat.) We’ve been doing plays for kids for 13 years. This is our 24th Arden Children’s Theatre production. The very first play we did for kids back in 1998 was Charlotte’s Web. My two sons, Liam and Flynn, weren’t even born then. (Liam’s almost 12 and Flynn’s in 3rd grade.) Now they can see what’s so amazing about this play. A group of people sitting in a circle listening to a story where every now and then we all lean in and wonder, “What’s going to happen next?!” Whether it’s listening to a story on the rug or gathered together in a theatre, it doesn’t get any better than that. Thanks for coming to see our play. We’re so glad that you are here.

P.S. The Arden’s production of The Flea and the Professor won this year’s Barrymore Award for Outstanding Musical. The Barrymores honor excellence in Philadelphia theatre and we are thrilled that our world premiere of a kid’s musical took the top prize. Congrats to everyone who made The Flea and the Professor such a great show, and thanks to you for making Arden Children’s Theatre so awesome.

DIRECTOR’S notes It takes a lot of work to make a play. That’s right, it takes work to make play. And a lot of people. Theatres are places of work. This might surprise you. By my count, over 60 people have contributed their energy, brainpower, and arm strength to making this production of Charlotte’s Web. You should see them all standing in a room together. It’s a big crowd. Whit MacLaughlin

E.B. White wrote a story that has been adapted by a playwright that was chosen by a producer that then is directed, stage-managed, and assistant stage-managed, so that actors—in this case 9 of them—can hold props (the objects on the stage, all created and designed) on a set (designed by a scenic designer, built by the technical director and carpenters) in light (lighting designer, electricians, stage hands) wearing costumes (costume designer, costume supervisor, costumiers) with music (composer, sound designer, sound technician) and these people are all coordinated by a production manager. And then, there are a whole lot more people behind the scenes—marketing people, people who work to pull together the resources to make plays, people who sell tickets…and on and on. It’s dizzying! These people are linked together by their efforts to bring pleasure. And fun. And happiness. To you, the audience. That’s a friendly thing to do if you ask me—to make pleasure and happiness. It takes Wilbur a while to find his friends. The people and animals around him start out thinking he is food. They eventually save his life. A very friendly thing to do. The work we undertake in life can contribute to us all. Hopefully, we are all working together to make a friendly world, full of pleasure and happiness and fun. At least that is the dream.

a Message from our Production Sponsor On behalf of PECO employees in the Greater Philadelphia region, including our Arden Theatre Company board member John McCawley, I am proud to continue our support for the Arden and their holiday production of Charlotte’s Web. CoMinG thiS SPrinG:

What is your favorite story? Is it Peter Pan? The Little Mermaid? Harry Potter? Do like the story because there is a character in it that you really love? Or do you like it because you think it is funny? Maybe you like it because there are lots of adventures the characters go on. At the Arden we love telling stories on stage – especially ones that are just for kids like you. This spring we are telling a story we like a lot called Robin Hood. You may have heard of this story before – there are a lot of books written about it and a couple of movies. Robin lives in Sherwood Forest with his friends called the Merry Men. They like to help people who really need it. Robin and the Merry Men are really good at climbing trees, wearing disguises and shooting bows and arrows. Everyone in their town knows that Robin Hood and the Merry Men will help them when they’re in trouble. They protect the town from evil – kind of like superheroes. In the play, Robin meets a new friend named Maid Marian, who’s pretty cool and likes going on adventures. Together they fight the Sheriff of Nottingham. Usually sheriffs are good guys who capture criminals, like a policeman. This Sheriff is really mean and does bad things to a lot of people. So it’s up to Robin, Maid Marian and the Merry Men to stop him! We like this play because its action packed. Robin and the Merry Men battle the Sheriff and his soldiers. And he and Maid Marian compete in an awesome archery contest where they shoot a bow and arrow to win a prize. We also like this play because you get to be a part of it. At every performance, Robin will ask for your help in defeating the Sheriff - which you can do right from your seat in the audience. You will be a part of all the action! We hope that you’ll come and check out Robin Hood when it starts performances in April.
