WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

As we continue our 30th Anniversary season, I am thrilled to return to the work of Henrik Ibsen, a playwright whose work continues to challenge and provoke. A Doll’s House premiered in 1879 and remains one of the most produced plays in the world. One example of the power of this play is the fact that it has inspired so many “sequels.” Before Lucas Hnath’s scathingly funny 2017 play A Doll’s House, Part 2, which picks up fifteen years after Ibsen’s A Doll’s House concludes, there were sequels such as The Doll’s House — and After, The Doll’s House Repaired (co-written by Karl Marx’s daughter Eleanor Marx) and even a 1982 musical directed by Hal Prince entitled A Doll’s Life. Recently, there is even greater interest in Ibsen’s work. This past year, when President Trump called the news media “the enemy of the people,” numerous regional theatres and a future Broadway production of Ibsen’s Enemy of the People — a play about the moral quandaries of whistleblowing and the clash between truth and commerce — were planned. The issues with which Ibsen grapples in his plays - the clash between individual freedom and the overwhelming pressure of societal norms and expectations - are very much ones that we’re dealing with today. We can see ourselves — and our times — in his work. As we look ahead this season, we are excited to be producing Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye and the groundbreaking musical Fun Home, in addition to a new version of Snow White that features two actors bringing the entire story to life. Of course, we are deep into planning next season, holding readings, finalizing rights, discussing projects with some of our most treasured collaborators. We will let you know as soon as details are confirmed, but we do hope you will “take the leap” and commit to joining us for next season. Details are on the back cover and in your stage bill insert. Please consider leaping into our third decade of bringing to the stage great stories by great storytellers. Thank you for doing that. Ibsen wrote plays that command our attention, challenging audiences to look at the society of which they are a part and to think about changing it. His plays provoke debate, asking questions and pushing for answers. The Arden’s original mission was to tell stories that “arouse, provoke, illuminate and inspire.” For me, this play does just that. Let the conversation begin.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR HONORARY PRODUCER

Elizabeth H. Gemmill The Arden has always been a home for classic and contemporary work, and A Doll's House straddles both. When it premiered in 1879, it was met with great controversy and became a rallying cry for the feminist movement in Europe. Ibsen wrote in his notes for A Doll's House in 1878, “A woman cannot be herself in contemporary society, it is an exclusively male society with laws drafted by men, and with counsel and judges who judge feminine conduct from the male point of view.” To some, the play issues a challenge to traditional restraints placed upon women. Similar challenges are still being issued today, and we see these happening in the form of the #metoo movement and women’s marches. Tackling this story is a cast and creative team full of some of my personal favorites, including Scott Greer and Joilet Harris, as well as voices that are new to the Arden stage, like Akeem Davis and Becky Chong, supported by the collaborative magic of Jorge Cousineau and Terry Nolen. I am thrilled to help bring this classic, yet relevant, story to the stage for the Arden's 30th Anniversary Season. Elizabeth H. Gemmill

DIRECTOR’S Notes Since the Arden was founded in 1988, we’ve had a commitment to Philadelphia-based artists and strive to produce work that celebrates and challenges this region’s remarkable acting community. Each season we hold informal readings of plays under consideration to see how actors with whom we have ongoing relationships connect with a specific role or project, and these have resulted in some truly extraordinary performances: Tom McCarthy in Death of a Salesman; Carla Belver in August, Osage County; Grace Gonglewski as Hedda Gabler – Arden’s first and only time producing an Ibsen play now twenty years ago. Over the years, we’ve done several readings of A Doll’s House with different casts. Each time I’ve loved rediscovering this play with different actors, reaffirming my eagerness to direct the piece, and yet, have not felt compelled to do it. A week or two after last year’s Presidential election, we gathered together a group of actors and once again read this play. Katherine Powell, who previously appeared at the Arden as Titania in Midsummer and Masha in Three Sisters, read Nora. And it was a revelation: gripping and shocking and powerfully resonant. I knew this play, or thought I did, yet I heard things in it that I hadn’t heard before. This was a play that needed to be done now, and Katherine Powell needed to play Nora. Actors are remarkable beings. They are curious and courageous and incredibly generous. Watching actors work during rehearsals is one of the great privileges of my life. These are days filled with such discovery and inspiration. Of course there are moments of frustration, but then there is a moment of insight, when a scene or a moment or a character comes to life, and nothing else matters. At that moment, a play written nearly one hundred and forty years ago comes to life and is taking place now. No longer once upon a time or in some distant place, but right here, right now. As I was working on this play, I was reminded of an expression that Chaim Potok used when we were working on our production of The Chosen, a play he co-authored based on his acclaimed novel. One time, when discussing a particular relationship, Chaim said, “Never judge a marriage unless you sleep under the bed.” That’s what we’ve tried to do with this production, to bring you into this marriage, behind closed doors, as close to these characters – and these remarkable actors – as possible. In this increasingly technological age, filled with screens and tweets and likes, actors ask that we be present, breathing the same air, listening as one. We need that. We need to gather together. And I am so incredibly grateful to the actors in this production and all of the actors who have appeared on our stages over the past 29-plus years for bringing so much to the work, sharing so much of themselves, and reminding us what it means to be alive right here, right now. Welcome to the Helmer’s. Thank you for joining us.

He is particularly proud of being a third generation actor, following in the footsteps of his mother and grandmother. HENRIK IBSEN (Playwright, 1828-1906) was a Norwegian dramatist and poet, who has often been called the father of modern drama. In his mature works Ibsen used naturalistic settings and dialogue to expose the corruption and hypocrisy of middle-class life. His work is valued for its technical mastery, penetrating psychological insight, and profound symbolism. His first play, the romantic Catilina (1850), written under the pseudonym of Brynjolf Bjarme, was followed by several historical dramas in verse; these included The Burial Mound (1854) and The Feast of Solhoug (1856), inspired

Who’s Who by Norwegian folk songs. His most impressive works were written after he left Norway. The verse tragedy Brand was published to considerable acclaim in 1866 while Peer Gynt (1867; first staged 1876), a portrait of the author as an undisciplined and unprincipled young man, established his international reputation. In 1871 Ibsen began the play that he considered his greatest work, Emperor and Galilean (1876), a 10-act 'double drama' based on the life of Julian the Apostate. It has seldom been revived. The first of his four social plays, the works that represent the essence of Ibsenism, was Pillars of Society (1877). This was followed by A Doll's House (1879), which remains the most widely performed of his works, Ghosts (1881), which uses sexually transmitted disease as a symbol of the guilt of a corrupt society, and An Enemy of the People (1882). Hedda Gabler (1890) explores the isolation of the individual, while The Master Builder (1892) focuses on the psychology of the artist. SIMON STEPHENS (Playwright) began his theatrical career in the literary department of the Royal Court Theatre, where he ran its Young Writers' Programme. His plays for theatre include Bluebird (1998); Herons (2001); Port (2002); One Minute (2003); Christmas (Bush Theatre, 2004); Country Music (2004); On the Shore of the Wide World (2005); Motortown (2006); Pornography (2007); Harper Regan (2008); Sea Wall (2008); Heaven (2009); Punk Rock (2009); The Trial of Ubu (2010); A Thousand Stars Explode in the Sky (co-written with David Eldridge and Robert Holman; Lyric Hammersmith, London, 2010); Marine Parade (2010); T5 (2010); Wastwater (2011); Morning (2012); an adaptation of A Doll's House (Young Vic, 2012); an adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time (National Theatre, 2012); Blindsided (Royal Exchange, 2014); and Birdland (Royal Court, 2014). His radio plays include Five Letters Home to Elizabeth (BBC Radio 4, 2001) and Digging (BBC Radio 4, 2003). His screenwriting includes an adaptation of Motortown for Film4 (2009); the two-part serial Dive (with Dominic Savage) for Granada/BBC (2009); and a short film adaptation of Pornography for Channel 4's 'Coming Up' series (2009). Awards include the Pearson Award for Best New Play, 2001, for Port; Olivier Award for Best New Play for On the Shore of the Wide World, 2005; and for Motortown. German critics in Theater Heute's annual poll voted him Best Foreign Playwright, 2007. His adaptation of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Play. CELEBRATING A FIVE-YEAR RUN ON THE ARDEN'S GRAND STAGE

Celebrating 25 Years of Arden Professional Apprentices:

An Interview with Raelle Myrick-Hodges

Jonathan Silver: Welcome back, Raelle! We’re thrilled to have you return to Philly leading Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. What have you been up to since directing 2016’s Two Trains Running? Raelle Myrick-Hodges: I have been a really lucky human. Since then, I have directed Sweet which was the world premiere by Harrison David Rivers at the National Black Theatre in Harlem. We were nominated for a bunch of theater awards which was awesome for the team. I also started teaching at Brown University in the Brown/Trinity Program and Directing Studio which has been a life-affirming space to be in as an artist. JS: When was the first time you read The Bluest Eye? How did it affect you? RMH: I was probably 14 or 15. It was the first (and probably last) time I had read it. I’m not a reader who goes back to reread novels because of what we do for a living with constantly reading plays. At 14, the most intense part of the book was always the Maureen Peal part. I have brown eyes. I have medium brown skin. I come from a family where, on my mother’s side, my mother has hazel eyes, my aunt has green eyes, my cousins have blue eyes and gray eyes – I’m the brown-eyed one. I spent a lot of my childhood having people tell me I wasn’t as pretty because I didn’t have “white people eyes” like everybody else. Now this is funny because in my family, I was looked at as the most special because they told me, “You’re tall, you have dark brown eyes, you’re so chocolaty” – I was just really special to my family. I feel like Maureen Peal’s character has always been misunderstood and that’s why that part of the book has always been the part that stuck with me the most. JS: The 2017/18 season marks the 25th year of the Arden’s Professional Apprentice program! As a former apprentice (Class 5 – the year the F. Otto Haas Theatre opened), how do you feel your time shaped your work ethic as a theater artist? RMH: That’s so funny because it continues to shape my work ethic as a theater artist today. I’m still sharing skills that I learned at the Arden over 20 years ago with, supposedly, “professional” theater artists on a daily basis. The biggest lesson I ever learned was that if there’s a problem, come up with a solution and don’t waste time whining and complaining. I practice and share this when I’m directing, when I have to remember my grant-writing skills, and when I’m teaching. No joke, I literally use these skills every day. JS: You once described your experience as an apprentice as “one of the hardest years of my life.” Along with the challenges, what are some of the other takeaways you continue to carry from the program? RMH: The program was hard because you have to be honest with who you are. I was really lucky to have a complicated year because I learned what type of artist I wanted to be. I knew what type of human I was because I accomplished going through a really rigorous program. It was one of the

Associate Producer Jonathan Silver interviewed director and former Arden Professional Apprentice Raelle Myrick-Hodges on her apprenticeship year, how the program helped launch her career, and bring her back to Philadelphia.

first times in my life I felt I was being treated equally and that’s actually harder than people think when it’s happening. It can be overwhelming. JS: Have you gone back up to the catwalk above the F. Otto Haas Theatre to see if what you wrote on one of the beams is still there?

Raelle and APA class 5

RMH: No but I totally want to because if it is still there, it should say: “McKenna & Raelle – True Love Always.” I’ve got to do that on the first day of rehearsal of The Bluest Eye if I can sneak in there. JS: For artists and administrators considering applying to the Arden Professional Apprentice program, what would you say to them to convince them this is one of the most rigorous theater training programs in the country? RMH: I would say, “Find me any other program that will pay you a salary, has you working 50 hours a week in 10 months, will train you to write a press release, write a grant, hold auditions, stage manage a production, TO RUN A DAMN THEATER, then leave with the necessary networking skills to work for any theater company in Philadelphia or this country?! – feel free to tell me about it. Would love to hear about it." Interested in learning more about the Arden Professional Apprenticeship program?
