WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
As we end our 2016/17 season, we are deep into planning for next year, our 30th Anniversary, which will include Cabaret,TouchTones, A Doll’s House, Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, and one final production to be announced very soon. In addition, we are adding a 6th production, the Philadelphia premiere of a beautiful new play entitled Every Brilliant Thing in our new 80-seat Selma M. & Robert J. Horan Studio Theatre in the Hamilton Family Arts Center, marking the first time we have produced a production in this intimate space. I first saw Every Brilliant Thing in Edinburgh and immediately thought that Scott Greer should do this play – and he will, for us, next year. In many ways, next season will be a celebration of cherished artistic relationships. TouchTones is a new musical by Michael Hollinger, with whom we’ve had an ongoing relationship since we produced An Empty Plate… in 1994, that will be directed by the brilliant Emmanuelle Delpech, director of Georgia McBride. Jorge Cousineau, who most recently brought his inspired vision to the paper cut-out world of The Secret Garden, will design and co-conceive A Doll’s House. Raelle Myrick-Hodges, who was an Arden Professional Apprentice in 1997 and most recently returned to direct our extraordinary Two Trains Running, will direct Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye. And Associate Artistic Director Matthew Decker, who first worked at the Arden as an Assistant Director for Owen Meany in 2006 (and has won the Barrymore Award for Outstanding Direction of a Musical for the past two years in a row), will direct the opening production of the season, Cabaret. Actors who will be part of next season include Akeem Davis, Michael Doherty, Joilet F. Harris, Alex Keiper, Katherine Powell, and many others soon to be announced. Stay tuned. As we work to prepare for next season, we are also continuing to commission and develop new plays and musicals that we hope will have life here at the Arden and beyond in future years. These projects include a new play by Lorene Cary, entitled My General Tubman; a new musical by Alex Bechtel, who wrote music for this year’s Midsummer and The Light Princess; and a new play by James Ijames, Abandon. James recently received the prestigious Whiting Award, a national award that seeks to identify “exceptional new writers” – and deservedly so. We are honored to invest in these great writers who have extraordinary stories they are bursting to tell. Again, stay tuned. My thanks to everyone who has already taken the leap and subscribed for season #30. If you haven’t, please consider joining us. Whether it’s for three shows, or four, or all six, your commitment allows us to further commit to these brilliant artists – and to continue to create work that brings meaning and beauty and joy to this community and beyond. Thank you for joining us for Gypsy.

HONORARY PRODUCERS Fred and Emily Anton Frederick W. Anton, III, is Chairman of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association. He has been a supporter of the Arden since 1990 when the Arden created St. Stephen’s Alley at 10th and Ludlow Streets, next door to PMA’s headquarters in the former Federal Reserve Bank Building at 925 Chestnut Street. During that time, he founded and hosted the Arden’s Leadership Night, an annual advocacy event that introduced leaders of this region to the Arden’s plays and programming. These Leadership events played a key role in broadening the Arden’s base of supporters, as well as introducing new board members and key supporters. During those St. Stephen’s Alley years, Mr. Anton and PMA generously donated use of a building on Ludlow Street that served as the Arden’s rehearsal space and set and costume shops. In addition, Mr. Anton played a leadership role in the Arden’s move to our current facility in Old City. PMA’s Paul Luber used his real estate expertise and spent a considerable amount of time and energy working on the conversion of this building. For the transformative contributions to the Arden, in 2011 Mr. Anton was selected by the Arden Board of Directors to be one of the inaugural members of the Cornerstone Society, an honorary group of individuals who have moved the organization forward in a significant way. Mr. Anton acknowledges the role F. Otto Haas — the man for whom our mainstage theatre is named — played in his life and career. “Otto was my mentor. He was Chairman of the Board of PMA when I first became President. Otto and I worked together on political action for the betterment of Pennsylvania. We also shared a mutual interest in the arts — first with the Walnut Street Theatre and then for Arden Theatre Company.” Fred and Emily Anton are enthusiastic supporters of the Arden, having served as the Honorary Producers since the 2007/08 season, and like the Arden, have a great passion for great stories by great storytellers. They are thrilled to support Gypsy. We thank Fred and Emily Anton for their ongoing extraordinary support of the Arden. Their tremendous generosity helps to make possible our work on the stage, in the classroom and in the community.
DIRECTOR’S Notes I wanted to direct Gypsy so that Mary Martello could do Mama Rose. Rather, I wanted the chance to be in the rehearsal room while Mary Martello was creating Mama Rose. Mary is a brilliant actress. She has a remarkable range, doing both plays and musicals, her entire life. I have visceral memories of Mary swinging a meat cleaver as Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd; extolling the virtues of the Kaiser while playing a musical saw as The Baroness in Café Puttanesca; playing a Boston Landlady and Senator Joe McCarthy’s wife in Red Herring. And the list goes on: Mattie Fae in August: Osage County, Sara Jane Moore in Assassins,Threepenny, Owen Meany, Candide, and many others. For me, working with Mary has always been exciting, surprising, and incredibly rewarding. Yet, while working on this show, I’ve been surprised by how the themes of this piece resonate with the world in which I find myself. The pursuit of fame. The obsession with success. Mama and her book of press clippings is not unlike so many of us who tout our children’s – or our own – accomplishments on Facebook. Her use of patriotic tropes to rally the crowds has resonance to our current political world. Gypsy captures the drive and energy of America, while also revealing the cracks – the dangers inherent in any single-minded, uncompromising pursuit. “You’re either with me or against me” is an unspoken mantra that continually appears throughout this story. Followed then by, “How do we move forward?” Well, “together!” Gypsy is a musical about pursuing the American Dream, and, at a time when that dream is facing seismic changes, this old-fashioned musical speaks to me. It raises questions that I hadn’t anticipated: About being a parent. About passion versus zealotry. About our country at this moment in time. Like all great art - and the musical is a truly great American art form - Gypsy allows us to see ourselves: “to find oneself and lose oneself” as the saying goes. I wasn’t expecting that. But mostly though, this one is for Mary.

ARDEN THEATRE COMPANY Founded in 1988, Arden Theatre Company is dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers–on the stage, in the classroom, and in the community. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays. Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire community through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Education Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. The Arden has received eleven Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, six City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 65 awards and 331 nominations from the Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. LOOKING AHEAD: THE ARDEN’S 2017/18 SEASON The Arden’s 30th Anniversary season opens with Cabaret with music and lyrics by John Kander and Fred Ebb. American writer Cliff Bradshaw travels to 1929’s Berlin Germany in search of inspiration for his next novel, and finds himself in the Kit Kat Club, a hot nightclub spot overseen by an omniscient Master of Ceremonies. There he meets the vivacious Sally Bowles, who introduces him to the pleasures of living in Berlin. Outside the club’s doors, however, the impending rise of the Nazi party threatens to shatter life as they know it. Directed by Matthew Decker, Cabaret will be an immersive experience that transforms the F. Otto Haas Theatre into the seedy and sinful Kit Kat Club. The world premiere of TouchTones is up next, with book and lyrics by Michael Hollinger (Under the Skin, Opus) and music by Robert Maggio. Justin and Christine have vowed to remain celibate until they are married. With their wedding day (and night) soon approaching, Christine stumbles upon an unfamiliar number, frequently dialed, on Justin’s phone, and discovers that it is a phone sex line called TouchTones. This provocative musical, set in 1999 before the internet explosion, explores the way we use technology in the quest for – and escape from – intimacy. TouchTones will be directed by Emmanuelle Delpech, who recently helmed The Legend of Georgia McBride, and features Alex Keiper as Christine and Michael Doherty as Justin. In January, Terry Nolen directs a reimagining of Henrik Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House on the Arcadia Stage. Nora and Torvald’s marriage seems perfect, but as secrets emerge and facades crumble, Nora begins a pursuit of truth and independence that could slowly unravel her family. When first produced in 1879, Ibsen’s play shocked audiences with its frank examination of marriage, money, and gender roles, and its subject matter feels just as vibrant - and relevant - today. Katharine Powell (Three Sisters) and Cody Nickell (The Whipping Man) lead the ensemble as Nora and Torvald, joined by Akeem Davis, Scott Greer, and Joilet F. Harris. Spring of 2018 brings an adaptation of Toni Morrison’s novel The Bluest Eye by Lydia R. Diamond (Stick Fly). A young black girl named Pecola Breedlove, growing up in 1940’s rural Ohio, yearns to be loved. She prays for pretty blue eyes (just like Shirley Temple), believing that their beauty will protect her from hardships and abuse in her daily life. A cast of eight actors play multiple roles in this powerful adaption that explores the destructive power of racism and the strength of a community attempting to survive. Raelle Myrrick Hodges, who directed last season’s Two Trains Running, will direct. The 30th Anniversary season closes with a yet-to-be announced musical on the F. Otto Haas stage, directed by Terry Nolen. We are looking forward to sharing this title with you as soon as we can, so stay tuned. As part of our 30th Anniversary season, we are also excited to announce an additional sixth show! We will present Duncan Macmillan’s Every Brilliant Thing as the inaugural production in The Selma M. & Robert J. Horan Studio Theatre, located in the Arden’s Hamilton Family Arts Center. This one-man play will feature Scott Greer, and is the story of a young boy who creates a list of all the best things in the world to cheer up his mother, who battles depression (1. Ice cream, 2. Water fights, 3. Things with stripes, 4. Christopher Walken’s voice…). This international and OffBroadway hit examines all the little things that make life worth living.
ENTER FOR A CHANCE TO SEE THE LATE SHOW! Two lucky winners will receive a pair of tickets for a filming of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert at New York's famed Ed Sullivan Theatre in NYC on Monday, June 26, 2017. The winners will be hosted by Arden's Terry Nolen (a college friend of Colbert's) and Amy Murphy at dinner in a NYC restaurant immediately following the taping.
