When the Arden approached us in 1998 about starting Children’s Theatre, we were enthusiastic supporters because we believe all children should be exposed to the best art at a young age. WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director
Peter Pan was created by J.M. Barrie over a hundred years ago. Since then, there have been many different versions of Peter Pan: film adaptations, animated cartoons, Broadway musicals, graphic novels, and video games. Peter Pan has inspired prequels (stories that imagine what might have happened before Peter met the Darling family) and sequels (imagining what might happen after J.M. Barrie's story is completed). There are stories about "returning to Neverland" and "finding Neverland" and one that my family loves about a grown-up Peter who is lured back to Neverland by Captain Hook. As you can tell looking at this set, our version is also a new take on this classic story. It was written by Douglas Irvine who runs a theatre for kids in Scotland called Visible Fictions, and Whit MacLaughlin, a Philadelphia director who creates theatre that is inventive and surprising and often unlike anything you've seen before. Our version is inspired by the original stories but, as you will see, brought it to life in an entirely new way. The Arden is 30 years old, and we've been doing plays for kids and their families for 20 years. We love doing plays for you. You are our favorite audience. And we are passionate about how great theatre can be: bringing together a group of people to hear a story, asking you to put away your phones and other distractions, and encouraging you to use your imagination. Most importantly, and obviously, it's live! We are all in this room together. And afterwards, after every Arden Children's Theatre production, you can ask the actors questions and have the opportunity to say hello or shake their hands. Over the past twenty years, kids have shaken hands with Wilbur and Charlotte, with Hans and Greta Brinker, with Cinderella and Robin Hood and Frog and Toad, and so many others. That's what theatre does best: it makes a connection, reminding us that we are all in this together. It's been over 100 years since Peter Pan first showed up at the Darling family's window. Since then, so many kids have travelled to Neverland with Peter Pan. Now it's your turn.
DIRECTOR’S Notes If Peter Pan had shown up at my window and said, “come fly with me to Neverland,” would I have gone? Left home? Good question. I hope so. Would my parents have given me permission to go? I doubt it. Actually, no. I can say that with certainty. No. Would I have gone anyway? The world can seem like a dangerous, scary place. Pirates everywhere. The world is also a lot of fun, the source of all fun, all adventure. Endless things to pique one’s curiosity. Including mermaids. At the beginning, parents protect us from the pirates. Sometimes they also have to protect us from the fun. Mermaids can be dangerous, close up. Eventually though, almost everyone leaves home and goes to Neverland — inevitably. I left my parents’ home many years ago. I now have a home of my own. And children. I’ve tangled with a few pirates. I never thought any of this was possible – the leaving, the tangling, the family – until it just sort of happened. Turns out, I didn’t exactly need my parents’ permission. And I have the story of Peter Pan to tell to my children. About the inevitability of their leaving. My mother played Peter Pan in high school. Her name was Anne Elizabeth, but she called herself Wendy, after Wendy in the story, until the day she left us for good. The fact is, the clock ticks inside that crocodile, and that clock always tells the truth. I felt my mother with me every day we rehearsed this play. I dedicate my work in this production to her. And also to the mother of my children.

Who’s Who DOUGLAS IRVINE (Playwright) is the Artistic Producer of Visible Fictions. His work has been performed across Scotland, England, Ireland, Denmark, Germany, Canada, and the USA. Under his leadership, the company was the first Scottish theater company to perform on Broadway. He has also collaborated with Seattle Children’s Theatre, and has directed at the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Polka Theatre in London. Who’s Who TERRENCE J. NOLEN (Producing Artistic Director) is co-founder and Producing Artistic Director of Arden Theatre Company. Favorite Arden productions include all-Philadelphia casts of August: Osage County, Death of a Salesman, The Grapes of Wrath and Hedda Gabler; and such musicals as Next to Normal, Sweeney Todd, Pacific Overtures,Violet, and Caroline, or Change. Terry directed the inaugural production of Arden Children’s Theatre, Charlotte’s Web. He has directed seven world-premiere plays by Michael Hollinger, three by Dennis Raymond Smeal, three by Michael Ogborn, two by Rogelio Martinez, and Bruce Graham’s Something Intangible. Terry has been nominated for 25 Barrymore Awards for his directing work at the Arden and received awards for The Baker’s Wife, Sweeney Todd, Opus, Winesburg, Ohio; Assassins, and Something Intangible. He directed Michael Hollinger’s Opus at Primary Stages in New York and was nominated for a Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Director. His short film The Personal Touch was nominated for an Emmy Award. AMY L. MURPHY (Managing Director) A Philadelphia native, Amy co-founded the Arden in 1988 with Terrence J. Nolen and Aaron Posner. She is especially proud of the Arden Professional Apprentice program and its contribution to the Philadelphia cultural community. She completed the Executive Program for Nonprofit Leaders-Arts. Amy serves on the Board of Theatre Philadelphia. She has served on panels for the National Endowment for the Arts, the New Jersey State Arts Council, Theatre Communications Group and the Philadelphia Cultural Fund. Amy was named a Hepburn Fellow 2008-9 by the Katharine Houghton Hepburn Center at Bryn Mawr College. We stage five productions each season as part of our mainstage series and two productions through Arden Children’s Theatre, the city’s first resident professional children’s theatre program. We create and produce new work through the Independence Foundation New Play Showcase. The Arden Professional Apprenticeship program trains future theatre leaders, and Arden Drama School classes teach children and teens about the craft of making plays.
