Epoka University is a higher education institution, aiming at becoming within the medium term the first-choice University for students and researchers in Albania and in the region. The University is based on the American educational system but the at the same time, all the offered study programs are compatible with the Bologna system, which we believe that together with the English-only instruction provided by the University, will facilitate the mobility of staff and students both within the European Higher Education Area and beyond. All the development strategies of our University are built on the “Education, Research and Contribution to Society” triangle, which in fact should constitute the principal functions of every institution of higher education. In today’s society, universities carry out several fundamental duties: producing, disseminating and sharing knowledge; raising professional and high-integrity individuals with strong analytical capabilities; constantly improving and updating academic programs; introducing innovative technology to respond to the labour market and globalization needs; and continuously contributing to the development of the society where they operate. Students are the reason for the existence of so many universities. In order to ensure quality at universities, the adequate education of students as well as their satisfaction should represent the main element to be taken into consideration by the managing authorities. Students should be able to participate through their representatives at the Student Council in all processes concerning teaching as well as management of the University. At Epoka University, students are located in the center of all planned activities. The level of admitted students, the quality of education provided and the professional achievements attained by graduates in the job market represent the most important factors determining the quality of the university. The selection of students as well as their proper education and preparation for work life are indispensable elements for the quality and success of the University. We are well aware of this fact and we have developed all our strategies accordingly. Epoka University also attaches strong importance to fostering cultural diversity; our students come from seven different countries, and we have established cooperation relationships with 25 universities in the USA, the UK, Italy, Poland, Turkey, Switzerland, Albania and other numerous countries, which also include, among other collaboration activities, the exchange of academic staff and students. At the same time, 70% of the faculty members are of foreign nationality. We are proud of all of our students and staff and we strongly believe that it is people that make a university successful. Whether you are a professor, student, visitor, researcher or friend, please know that here at Epoka your dedication and accomplishments will be appreciated and valued. We look forward to welcoming you in!

Albanian Public Perceptions of Socio-Cultural and Foreign Policy Issues For the entire ninety-nine year history of the independent Albanian state, no project or survey with the specific aim of inquiring into the opinions of Albanian people on foreign policy has been published. This project seeks to remedy that situation.
ALBANIAN PUBLIC PERCEPTIONS OF SOCIO-CULTURAL AND FOREIGN POLICY ISSUES
The overall goal of the project “Albanian Public Perceptions of Socio-Cultural and Foreign Policy Issues” is to provide a primary academic source for academicians, foreign-policy makers, civil-society organizations and think-tank institutions by providing the first large survey on the opinions of Albanian people on foreign policy. The project is further motivated by the need to democratize the process of formulation, conduct and implementation of Albanian foreign policy by taking into consideration the real opinions of Albanian society on these issues. To this end, the project aims to be unique in providing a platform that determines the impact of socio-cultural and religious identities on the views of Albanian people on foreign policy.

Report of Activities 2011-2012 17
Key Findings The project focuses on two main spheres: (1) understanding Albanians’ perceptions on their socio-cultural backgrounds; (2) comprehending the issues and international relationships that Albanian people prioritize in foreign affairs. The survey shows that two out of three Albanians or 68 percent of the respondents affirm that relations with the European Union (EU) should be prioritized in the foreign policy of Albania; furthermore, the overwhelming majority of respondents—around 92 percent—strongly support the country’s EU membership. When asked about the reason behind their choice, 49 percent of the respondents expected that EU membership would at most bring economic improvement, which corresponds to the 33 percent of the respondents who think that the EU is more successful in the area of economy and the 53 percent of the respondents who define the lack of economic development as the main problem in Albania. Another interesting finding is that respondents consider the United States to be the country with the greatest influence on Albanians politics (64% of the respondents), and the third biggest country impacting Albanians economy (15% of the respondents), although as a matter of fact the USA is not on the list of Albania’s foreign trade partners. On the other hand, although 70 percent of the respondents consider Turkey to be the most powerful country in the Balkan region, only about 8 percent think that Turkey has the greatest influence in the Balkans. In addition to it, only 13 percent believe that Turkey has the greatest impact on Albanian economy and only 4 percent agree on that it has the greatest impact on Albanian politics. Nevertheless, most of the Albanian people, around 37 percent of the respondents, think of Turkey as their friendliest state. From another perspective, Albanian people perceive the freedom of religion to be the second most successful achievement of Albanian state in 20 years of democratic experience; however, two out of three persons in Albania have never attended or have attended only once in their lives the religious congregations. Nevertheless, the Albanian public agrees on an existing harmony between religions in the country, which is perhaps why less than 4 percent of the respondents think that the religious diversity will lead to problems in the future. To conclude, it is crucial to reemphasize that the Albanian Political Culture Project is unique in providing an overview of the opinions of Albanian people on foreign policy. In addition, we should restate that although some questions in the survey were asked to determine the preferences of Albanian society towards political parties, that domestic political analysis is not the objective of the survey. The questions are simply used as independent variables to understand whether various political preferences make a difference in the opinions on Albanian foreign policy. Lastly, it is hoped that this project will not only serve as a valuable source of information for scholars, policy makers and civil-society organizations but will also benefit those who aim to undertake other similar or more advanced works on the same subject.

Pocket Emergency Project Participants: t &OJT 6MRJOBLV t )BSJT ,SBTOJRJ t %JBNBOU /F[JSJ t "SEJU %FSWJTIJ Supervisor: Elton Hoxha Along with the Imagine Cup, we started to imagine a better world too, imagine a world where technology could help people in need, those who cannot communicate naturally. Thinking of an emergency, the first thing coming to mind was a call to 127 (911), but this would not be so easy for a certain group of people. It was this fact that led us to develop a solution to enable the communication with emergency services of the people with communication disabilities. Emergency Pocket is a system that enables people in need, especially the ones with communications disabilities to report an emergency simply by pressing the corresponding emergency button on the phone screen. The application is linked with the police departments, hospitals and firefighters. Having calculated the location of mobile device, the application reports in real-time a detailed emergency to the nearest point. Each department follows and monitors related emergencies through a web application and can access not only the emergency location information but also information of the person. The operator assigns emergency to the team to handle the situation, transferring emergency details through the system. Last link of this process ends with updating and reporting on system status after emergency is handled. The application enables a chain of information transfer with zero time delay. No need to show to the operator an address or to find one, because everything is correct, simply follow the directions to reach the destination. Pocket Emergency is an extendible and applicable E-government Emergency System Management that could link not only the police departments, hospitals and firefighters but also any other interested institution. Ajmona and Klodiana, two architects of success Two architecture students from Epoka University, Ajmona Hoxha and Klodiana Millona, are participating in the new TV show “Nga e Para”, expertly directed by Valbona Selimllari. In a team of seven, these two third-year students add color and efficiency to the program.. The show consists of the identification of several houses or apartments which after the redesigning are totally changed, surprising the viewers and especially the direct beneficiaries, the residents of these apartments. To add creative decoration and color, specialist Ajmona Hoxha plays a major role. She is responsible for the selection of colors and design for each home by addressing household characteristics and the tastes of family members. Ajmona is an expert in selecting the decoration to be creative, in line with the tastes of the residents, and harmonious with furnishing and lighting. Operational specialist Klodiana Millona is also very important for the show. She specializes in furnishing the apartments in the most efficient way and in accordance with the needs of people who will live in them. Klodiana tries to use furniture that has multiple uses and is in synch with the design and the lighting environment. “It is very special experience, as well as intensive,” confesses Ajmona. “What makes it so unique is that we get so much field work. We are open to challenging and changing construction design, masonry, furniture dimensions, areas of transition, electrical and plumbing works, insulation, clothes, painting and every possible technical detail ... all this in just 4 days,” she continues. For Klodiana it is inspiring because “every home is facing difficulties and we should bring precise and urgent solutions.” But what is the most essential thing that the two bright students of Epoka University have learned from this experience? “The first but even the last important thing after these experiences is to make the difference between the architect who designs in the office and the one that designs on the ground.” With their well-recorded experience, determination and passion these new architects show great promise of continued success.

Albania is well known for its young generations. As a “young country” is facing with hundreds of problems and dilemmas, about the reality and visions of the future. After the dictatorship, Albanians tried to rebuild society, political and economical system. But, living in a country which has been isolated for half century is a big challenge, and a very skeptical question on changing reality. Between East and West, Tradition or Modernity what is more impressive and interesting for Albanian students!? Epoka University as the place where knowledge and practice merge together continues “The Wednesday Evenings Forum of PIR Department; a New Tradition at Epoka University’, when the student’s academic life is still one of the strongest values. The presentation about youth and their perceptions through sociological perspective was held in café library “E per7shme” and organized by professors and students of PIR department at Epoka Univeristy, on 28 of March 2011. Presentation was intended to point out the responsibilities that have taken the Albanian students in the field of social life. According to Mr. Dervishi the foundation of Tirana University in Albania dates during 1946 on 20 December which is the date of the foundation of the Pedagogical Institute of Tirana. Furthermore Prof. Dr. Z. In this context Mr. Dervishi stressed the indispensable role that Universities should have in a society in order for that to progress and prosper. Educational System during the communist regime was another aspect of the discussion upon which Mr. Dervishi based his comments and critics. He stressed that Educational System during that period was expanded and further developed, but it remained within the frame of elite’s will. In other words were very dependent and censured by the government. In many cases for research purposes professors of different fields, studied the works of contemporary western sociologist most often through their translation in Russian language. Concerning the collapse of the communist regime, Mr. Dervishi mentioned that it caused also the elimination of many official barriers for the free flow of sociological thought. It was followed with the establishment of the new Department of Philosophy and Sociology within the Tirana University in 1993-1994. Genci Murja PIR IV, “Liberal Democracy and Political Islam in Albania” discussed at PIR Forum The weekly meeting of students and professors from Political Science and International Relations department of Epoka University that takes place at the library “E Për7shme”. During the meeting of Wednesday, May 9, Mrs. Elisa Gonzalez, second year master’s student presented the topic of her degree theme. The dissertation was about “Liberal Democracy and Political Islam in Albania”. The work is collocate within the international debate on the compatibility of this two “way of being” that often have been opposed and used as tools to create fear and hate between societies and populations. And it has the objective to find a possible solution undertaking the Albanian situation as a possible third way in order to overcome an old-aged impasse. The presentation was organized into two main parts that it is possible to summarize in two man assumptions: conceptualization and clarity of main terms in order to avoid misunderstandings and dispel stereotypes; analysis of the Albanian case both compared to the general background and with the Balkan context. The presentation was only about a draft, but it clarified several concepts: what is Political Islam and what have been its main trends; what is the general perception of democracy within the main Muslim populations; why democracy must not be understood as a static concept; what are the mainstays of the Balkan Islam and finally what are the peculiarities of the Albanian Islam, and the perception of the people in the country. Erzen Dibra PIR III , Epoka Students Participate in Bugajski Hour on Albanian Screen On Wednesday, 18 April 2012, students and faculty from the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Epoka University had the opportunity to participate in the recording of the Bugajski Hour on Albanian Screen for its monthly broadcast. Janusz Bugajski, host of the show, is the chairperson of the Project in Southeast European Studies at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, D.C. The fourteen students and four faculty members were in the audience as Janusz Bugajski interviewed the Head of the EU Delegation to Albania, Ambassador Ettore F. Sequi. One of the key points emphasized by Ambassador Sequi throughout the interview is that EU membership for Albania brings significant advantages, particularly increased economic ties and the benefit of EU commitment to assisting member states that find themselves in crisis, as recently exemplified in the EU’s assistance to Greece. Following the interview, students and faculty from Epoka asked questions of Janusz Bugajski concerning Albania, the Balkans, and EU integration. Prof. Bekir Çınar asked about the possible future union of Kosovo and Albania, given that the recent study, Albanian Public Perceptions of Socio-Cultural and Foreign Policy Issues, by the Center for European Studies and the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Epoka found that the majority of Albanians would welcome union with Kosovo. Mr. Bugajski responded by saying that the path for union of the Albanian populations in the several states around Albania is best achieved through membership in the EU, which will allow the free movement of people and make national borders irrelevant. When asked a follow-up question by Epoka student Derand Krasniqi, Mr. Bugajski acknowledged that if some states with significant Albanian populations were allowed into the EU, but if others, such as Kosovo and Macedonia, were excluded from membership, that the situation may cause some frustration for Albanian residents of such states. When asked what he thought was behind the recent violence in Macedonia, Mr. Bugajski noted that while we do not yet know who caused the violence, it is obvious that some group is trying to provoke wider ethnic conflict in Macedonia and that it is essential that Macedonians and Albanians alike refuse to be drawn in by these provocations. Another question asked was on the status of journalistic freedom in Albania. Mr. Bugajski claimed to enjoy journalistic freedom himself, but remarked that self-censorship is an issue in Albania, when journalists avoid saying things that may not be welcomed by those in positions of power or influence. Following the show, Prof. Salih Özcan, head of the Department of Political Science and International Relations remarked: “As the head of PIR department, I am extremely fortunate to work with such a wonderful group of students who have common goals and commitments to improve the Albanian society and mankind at large. We are also very appreciative of the generous support of Head of the Media and Public Relations Office at Epoka University”. Earth Day Reminds Campus Community of Importance of Recycling Every year, we celebrate Earth Day. For Epoka University this year, it ought to serve as a call to action for students to be more engaged in recycling and taking care of the Earth. As a university, we collaborated with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports. We need to look at Earth Day for what possibilities it offers us to show our progress. We have to show that we, as Epoka University, are aware of the amount of waste we produce and how much we can potentially save. An important aspect of recycling is getting students and people aware that we care about our impact to the Earth. It is vital that we raise awareness about recycling, communicate clearly with students and educate them about the positives of recycling and the effect it will have on our environment for generations to come.

Epoka University Organized the First Inter-College Science Olympiad Epoka University and “Turgut Ozal” Education Company collaboratively organized the “1st Inter-College Science Olympiad 2012”, held in Tirana on May 12th, 2012. The Inter-College Science Olympiad is devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. The Science Olympiad goals are accomplished through the dedication of Epoka University professors who organize classroom activities, research, and after school training clubs. A main focus of our competition is to elevate science education and learning to a level of enthusiasm and support. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events, which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of mathematics, biology, chemistry, computers and technology and English. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications.

Sensitive Society 2011 Holidays Article The most delightful part of the holiday season is the chance to give meaningful gifts to children and help their families. Sensitive Society Club members at Epoka University compete each year to see who can gather the best gifts for local children. The Career and Planning Center led the charge by hosting the “Helping Needy Families” drive to collect meat for 150 families of martyred policemen. “They had some clothes and toys there and said other groups are going to bring more,” Elda Doda, member of Sensitive Society Club says. “We set up gift drop-off boxes, and we also reached out to the community.” Last year, more than 340 children benefited from the generosity of Epoka University students, Elda said. Students are willing to help children to develop necessary social skills in different campaigns. Dodaj said he’s hoping to expand deliveries next year to more communities in Albania. “You may not see it, but there is a real need here,” she said. “We want to do everything we can to help people get on their feet.” Sensitive Society Club is grateful to all the donors.
