My thesis is concerning the different sets of multicultural/ethnic community living in a diverse and developing city of Umeå, Sweden. I aim to look at the different multi-ethnic groups and understanding their patterns of living formally and informally with regard to the integration and identity within the local urban fabric.

While it’s a busy year for Umeå being the European Capital of Culture 2014, it receives lots of attention and lots have been decided for the development of Umeå with regard to architecture and culture. However I believe that under transmodernism; the role of architecture today has been simplified and reduced to

Surfacing Multi-Ethnic/Cultural coexistence

Coming from an Islamic country I had my first contact in a secular state a year and a half ago in Sweden for studies. A place that is known to me as neutral and liberating, I find it hard to imagine how immigrants can survive here without being integrated with the society. Back at home I would find myself involved with and around each other as a support system so much more that to find me time was mostly impossible, let alone the socio-economic and religious customs. Sure it’s liberating to observe silence here, but one starts missing the chaotic world back in Pakistan. Sweden is among the countries that give refuge to many who have escaped war and other hostilities prevalent in their respective countries. However the mass induced multi ethnicity constitutes of 14%1 of the immigrant population of Sweden today. Large amount of Arabs and eastern Asians dominate amongst the settlers and thus has had a strong cultural influence on Sweden.

Social network as a means to integrate.

Having settling in Umea, many immigrants face cultural shock, due to the change and pace of life. From lack of formal education, training, religious/staunch value systems and even age brackets make such people difficult to include themselves in the local society. In communities, intent, belief, preferences and other conditions may be present and common, affecting the identity of the participants and their degree of cohesiveness. If community exists, both freedom and security may exist as well. The community then takes on a life of its own, as people become free enough to share and secure enough to get along. The sense of connectedness and formation of social networks comprise what has become known as communal values- [See, Social Capital-

Through integrating cultures and traditions popular amongst multicultural-ethnic community, will allow the city to grow a social and cultural Identity. I want to explore the opportunity of diverse shared activities that changes with time and space, which foster a balanced community engagement and celebration. Facilities may be run by a certain groups that shift with time allowing a balance in participation among all in the given society.

Umea is classified as a rich and energetic city by the virtue of its diverse inhabitants. With one third of the population being students from all over the world and an immigrant society that is scattered in pockets within the urban fabric, it offers a great potential of exchange within different sets of cultural interests and diversity among groups of people. It allows for social and cultural contribution to personify Umeü’s Identity. What particularly interests me along this exploration is the strong social network that holds a micro community through a cultural and social infrastructure. The social network is the driving factor that assures engagement and encourages community living. While surfacing different communities to engage with one another may appear delicate. The question of protecting cultures is an important concern.

Religion can also play an important position in a society and ways it can influence communities. Sweden is considerably known for being one of the most liberal and tolerant welfare states, where freedom of equality is essential. Religion here in my opinion is personal and often not considered as the foundation of discourse or contact. However in the summer of 2013 I had the urge to visit a mosque in Umeå. Surprisingly the designated “Islamic Centre/Mosque” was a small extended apartment room part of a student housing building. This struck my attention and my quest to learn the culture of the Muslim community became even more. Further investigation suggests that there are approx 1500 practicing Muslims in Umeå. The centre has subdivided its self into 3 organizations that direct the facility at the City centre, Ålidhem and one that is responsible to undertake the construction of the purpose built facility. The existing facilities are run by charitable and collective funds that go into renting the space. The Norrland Hospital Building has also allotted a former Patient room as a prayer area to the Muslim employees/ visitors. Despite the space constraint the majority of men visiting often end up occupying the women sections due to lesser number of women for that matter. This is a significant sign for lack of a quality space for possibility of engagements in culture and prayers within the society.

Immigrants and Foreigners registered with the municipality of Umeå as of 2013.

The immigrant society. The number of immigrants born outside of Sweden and who attained citizenship and now reside in Umea recorded are 11,531 as of 2013 1. These figures constitutes of Swedish natives, EU nations and outside of EU countries. These people may be classified into age groups. Among these are also people who have little or no formal higher education and rely on skill and labor. Most cultural societies are accustomed to traditional food, arts and craft which plays an essential part of lifestyle and culture that has always been a primary mode of contact amongst their society.

The development of the Umea Mosque on the contrary has become an unfeasible and a controversial task that has been prolonged for almost 8 years now. The Lack of Funds for construction and a debt of SEK 1.5 million remain a puzzling factor.

While the major hyper stores serve the mass, tiny ethnic food stores occupy small districts serving a rather small community to sustain their appetite for traditional food. Similarly many private small micro businesses allow communities to stay well connected to their roots. On the contrary these communities at large tend to segregate themselves by virtue of not being given the opportunity to integrate into society. In an interview with the Imam (One who leads the prayer), he recalls that religion here seems not the binder as it would in an Islamic state. Moreover, there have been multiple indifferences within the different schools of thought among the Muslim community in Umea. Although the communal prayers are an essential ritual among the Muslims, the attendance at its peak is observed more generally at The Friday prayers. Though a collector, it is limited to a role of what congregation hall is capable to do.

“We want to integrate in the society. We want the locals to be able to participate, share our culture and traditions but we lack the forum. A strong Faith will make you pray where ever but cultural interest and activities will unite every one.”

New this year is the scholarship program Science without Borders as the Brazilian state finances. Six students from Brazil is admitted to Umeå University within the Afirca program.

Tuesday, August 27 Umeå University welcomes over 1,800 international students. It’s about 480 new exchange students and over 1,350 socalled free movers, students who came to Umeå University on their own. Exchange students come from 39 different countries. By far the largest number of exchange students are from Germany, followed by France and Spain. Although European universities are in the top, this however increases the number of exchange students from Asia. Umeå University has been signing contracts with various Int schools for exchange programs. And sees more and more International students visiting from across continents.

What was interesting to learn was his remark was not a fundamental obligation on Islam but a humble word of advice that drew inspiration to me. Socially the community may be branched into categories in effort to create cultural activities within and outside the community; from Family run childcare centres, to cultural and religious studies and recreation is a prevalent form of tie that’s holding the society together. One of the better sustained organizations is the Umea Legend, a municipality driven organization and run by an Iraqi immigrant who’s transformed the property into a social club (Boxing Club). His motto above all is to create a family and using a strong social network that allows for other extracurricular activities. The space is free to use and can cost SEK 200/6 Months for pupils above 20 years of age. The facility offers training for dancing, boxing, basketball, football, gaming and extra guidance tuitions for children. This encourages people of all ages to use the platform for a casual discourse and recreation- Operating as a micro community. Can the success of this social model be used in exploring on a bigger context?

Among these Students are Internationals and even immigrants who may be registered in Swedish courses or various course programs etc.

Of the 34225 Students that are registered with the Umeå University, 50% constitute of the students that are enrolled full time programs where by the latter half are registered in short courses and or are studying distant courses(Not in Umeå).

Every starting of the university semester Umeå receives a large number of students from all over the world. An estimate of 500-1200 students find it hard to find accommodation. This is because of the waiting queue in student housing. Till such time the students receive a confirmation on accommodation. Temporary housing facility is available at youth hostels. Students can also find means to live with friends and in rare occasion Muslim students find shelter at mosques to sleep over. On the contrary, tuition paying students are guaranteed housing by the university before arriving to Umeå.

Having asked students to share their immediate experience on arriving to Umeå and if they arrived later than 1800 hrs. 3/8 Incoming students[1] were late and were not able to collect there keys from the housing office. Of course, these people had managed to find a place with a friend with ease and or difficulty. This was an interesting issue that was brought up as I went through a si milar experience. Because the housing office shuts at 1800 hrs, many incoming students often cannot make it in time for various immigration reasons and late travels at the beginning of a University semester. However these late comers automatically become part of the queue that needs a place to stay that instant. But lets say if a student arrives on a Friday night. The stay over extends creating more problems for further incoming student while a 21sqm of space goes wasted for each night the person is not able to have its room.

There are ways of which one can of course collect keys to a home through requesting friends to collect them before closing hours. But it might not work for every one. Therefore can the housing office extend or create a facility to provide key collections for students after hours. It may even include Students to participate? The Youth Centers operational hours are 1500 - 2200 hrs respectively from MondayThursday and 1500- 2300 hrs on Fridays and Saturdays. Since closing hrs are 1800 for all organizations, can the youth house assist through a key collection facility for students. This would essentially give incoming students a kick off start through a youth facility that allows numerous encounters with diverse people on arrival.

Upon arrival many students rely on emergency accommodation service organized in collaboration with the municipality that allows students to stay with families. Most student are successful where as some share places with friends or relative until they can find something permanent.

This allowes to understand the demographics of its loaction and the possible integrations of such age groups through cultural activities.

Umeå’s second largest population lives is Teg. Orginally a village area that became part of Umeå in 1965. Among the residants, upto 35% constitutes age groups between 20- 44 years. This in relation to Östra Stadsdelarna is yet lower to the 50% age group of 20-44 years.

The island will effect the distribution of density and movement along and across the river. Removing the notion of the river as a barrier, and to create a binder for future expansion is an intent i like to consider.

Hamnmagasinet Youth House Umeå

Hamnmagasinet Existing Situation Hamnmagasinet is a project run under the umbrella of the municipality- Umeå Kommun. It serves different functions and caters to flexibility for the public. Here spaces are distributed along the entire building (Refer Fig 1). The building is open to everyone and most open house activities are free of cost. All event suggestions from youth are assessed by the management of the Hamnmagasinet before the youths can actually direct and produce activities.

Various organizations collaborate to support and/or sponsor along with the municipality. The space however is tight and constricted. Corridors running through the long building are dark with poor lighting condition. In my opinion, articulation is poor. Workshop areas are hidden while the immediacy of spaces is disconnected. For example, the opportunity of celebrating craft work in process is lost, as a visitor comes to the café- All work shop rooms are all tucked away upstairs in closed rooms. The lack of pockets of breathing space would allow for a sequential distribution of spaces within the facility of Hamnmagasinet. There by allowing people to spread out in the facility then concentrate in one area.

Music stage activities

Hamnmagasinet also called the youth house is a perfect venue for events targeted at young people. Originally a warehouse, they host everything from concerts by local and international stars, skate courses and design workshops. There are two different stages, exhibition halls and meeting rooms. There are also rehearsal rooms and DJ-rooms, and other recreational rooms.

What is peoples kitchen-(folkkök) ?

They serve vegan food for as cheap for 25 SEK every Sunday at Hamnmagasinet in Umeå. Operated on a nonprofit basis with a view to giving a positive impression of vegan food. Open from 14-16.30 every Sunday except the last day of each month during term time. Hamnmagasinet is located down at the river adjacent to the Kultur Väven.

But as you may have noticed, we who work in the kitchen, it also often quite funny. We laugh a lot, especially when we make mistakes. It’s nice to be social at the same time we do something practical together. 1

Kitchen rules and regulation. Hamnmagasenit has to adhere to strict kitchen rules. It maintains its own license approved by the Kommun. Since its a public kitchen and not operated by professional chefs, there are a few rules with regard to hygiene and health. Essentially NO UNCOOKED MEAT may be kept and stored in the premises of the peoples kitchen. All meat items should be pre-cooked in order to be sold or stored.

Finding the choice of oriental food can often be challenging. Umeå has chains of super stores, among these stores are ICA and Coop. While these stores dominate in different districts and localities, cultural- oriental food is limited. The few private stores run by private Ethnic groups cater to small communities. And mostly offer non commercial products imported from their region. These Oriental shops are mostly located around a particular settlement of a typical community. Eastern stores size up to 2 student dorm rooms occupied in apartment blocks at the entry level. Due to the small footprint sto ck is limited and booking or waiting for essential items is quite a common trait. Store facilities meet standards of bare minimum and are unequipped to keep up with the trendy equipped super stores. This lends to a very uninviting atmosphere for the general public.

Hamnmagasinet Folk Kök (Peoples kitchen) Finding loop holes to operate a kitchen that can serve for multiple users Identifying a commercial kitchen A commercial kitchen essentially puts forward various health and quality control factors to insure that the food sold is free of any allergies and generally safe to consume. This guarantee is merely upon which one can gain the license to run a kitchen. Hamnmagasinets Folkkök does not have a commercial kitchen. Although outsourcing seems a much straight forward approach,

the folkkök primarily avoids outsourcing to maintain the integrity of the youth house by promoting students and youths to participate and organize cooks. However Folkkök maintains its own quality control and tries to its best to push students to keep a healthy environment. The kitchen is used at its optimum only on Sundays where Vegan food is prepared and sold. During the week the kitchen is used to prepare sandwiches biscuits etc. Because the Sunday food fest at Folkkök is popular can the envelope be pushed to integrate and enhanced through even more interventions within the scope of the kitchen.

Expanding the kitchen program at Hamnmagasinet A flexible kitchen may be possible, in order to run multiple operational cooks. Its of course important to identify the scope and retaining different cooking areas by hierarchy. Food for sale becomes primarily the main kitchen serving the public. However smaller kitchens can be attached for private users to cook as long as its not sold. This intern opens up avenues for a set of users as activity cooking- Culinary Cooking. The possibility of shared kitchen may be seen as a social intervention. While the food culture is relatively low in Umeå various ethnicities in Umeå can benefit out of this social activity. Can students find their solution to their week long supply of lunch boxes? Can different ethnic residents and immigrants from all over the world bridge these cultural differences through food? These questions essentially are the factors that allows one to mediate a social encounter. I am in full favour of promoting great authentic cultural food. And in my 2 years of stay I still find it hard to find the right spice and the perfect taste to grab from the

local ethnic stores and restaurants. Its about starting the right trend and a purposeful intention. While speaking to one of the Kitchen managers at Mc Donalds- Umeå, also an immigrant- had the opportunity to visit the ‘Little Indian’ restaurant at the main campus to assess food.

“ I was shocked to learn how the making of food has died. There is no ingredient, non what so ever! Food comes in flavour in tin cans. Can you believe that they have 5 different flavoured currys - the base ingredient, and mix it with chicken or meat to dish it out for the week ?” [Kept Anonymous]

Svenska För Invandrare (Swedish for Immigrants) Integrating Through Language

“If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart.” - Nelson Mandela Swedish for Immigrants is the national free Swedish language course offered to most categories of immigrants. People who have emigrated to Sweden are entitled by law to Swedish language education. SFI is directed towards people who lack basic knowledge in Swedish and are of the minimum age of sixteen.1 The training is paid for by the municipality (local authority) in which the immigrant lives, and applications to take the course are made to the municipality’s adult education department.

SFI also caters to adult education or education structured in specialized studies, which allows them to learn Swedish in a working environment. Currently the specialized model is used in 4 kommuns of VästerbottenSweden, And Umeå is one of them.

Hamnmagasinet promotes various workshop in stitching, exploring material through which a lot of young ones and youths make Art and Craft. Fig 1. No. SFI students in Västerbotten.

Students and youths take part in these essentially to push their boundaries and in exploring themselves through what they create. Supervised by professional artists and teachers, it provides a platform for creative discourse. The cost of these workshops is free and every one is welcome to join in. Flea markets are also an important part associated to the youth center. As it allows a platform for creators to exhibit and sell their stuff. The aspect of sustainable living plays an important role as a lot of used stuff is given a second life through this exchange. On the contrary as a remark on the locations of these creative places within the building, are rather hidden or tucked away from the daily visitors. These workshops lack the celebratory factor. A process that may be enjoyed by not just the ones who take part in but to be able to inspire others. I believe the articulation of these spaces would largely benefit the youth house in large.

In 2011, 4 of the 15 municipalities of Västerbotten (Umeå, Storuman, Wilhelmina and Dorotea) offered customized specializations for SFI 3. Among these included training in business, technology, healthcare, hospitality, cleaning, personal assistant and entrepreneurship. However, no approach has been taken towards Culinary and food cultures. On the contrary, having tested this model of approach it was determined that it was difficult to find target people accordingly and also to find placements of jobs respectively. Integrating SFI learning through Culinary Classes. Food has always been an important and common factor that ties communities and cultures. Numerous amount of refugees and other immigrants use the SFI platform as their first social contact. Study groups can engage in cooking classes as to create a social enviornment. This would essentially be an ice breaker generally create a much healthier conducive enviornment for learning and exchanging cultures. From what I understand Food is a mediator and can open avenues for prospective job industries. As many ethnic cultures gather, it is possible and much needed for Umeå to exchange food cultures from different parts of the world. This intern would set trends bringing communites closer.

Under the Education Act, the organization of the SFI has collaborated with the Employment Service SE, promoting students who are given opportunities that working and education in Swedish for immigrants can be combined with other activities through Internships. Figure 2. shows the ratio of how many students who have performed an internship.2

The youth house serves as a meeting place for youths and students. It has formed its identity and its very essential to preserve the characteristics of this facility. However I feel the old industrial building block is introverted and isolated.

The youth house is in constant collaboration with students, youth, creative people and organizations to build a place of social interest and exploring their identities. My exploration in Architecture and research primarily is to identify key roles and concerns and to amalgamate these aspects and articulating so to strengthen the Youth House Identity.

Reaching outwards. Extrovert facility. Celebratory. Social Magnet. The Hamnmagasinet advocates creativity, exploration and integration amongst youths and public in general. Can it allow for expansion Architecturally and Programmatically? and allowing organizations and pupils to look into an integrated society. I want to explore how architecture can help foster in maintaining the essence and yet create the openness.

? Recreation, an island situation. The Multi Purpose Hall serving the hamnmagasinet will comprise of an auditorium and a flex hall that will be able to host activities in conjunction to the youth center. The relocation essentially aims to make the Hall independent of the youth house so to give back more workshop area to the hamnmagasinet while also increasing the accommodation for the multi purpose area respectively. This would create an uninterrupted area within the Youth house and raise further opportunity for water activities.

Design Facade study and Materiality

Concept

Climbing Wall.

The strategy behind materializing the building was to reveal and extrude the new material. It was essential to retain the identity of the old and create a distinct clarity in the new. Grey tinted brick is extruded within the existing Hamnmagasinet footprint. White polycarbonate facade is used in accentuating the horizontality and making it lighter towards the top.

The overhead cover provides not only an entry portal but an entry points into the building facility. The Independent hostel core wall serves as a climbing wall for the public. The immediacy of the wall also generates an activity area.

Facade studies The white polycarbonate starts to dematerialize towards the South-western facade revealing the darker tone of the brick that grounds its self on the existing column beam structure.

Childrens Activity Zone. The the over head projection not only provides uninteruppted views but also defines the entry below for the children. The playful slender stilts supporting the projection also echoes in the playful activity area of the facility. Extending the children workshop area to the outside provides for outdoor play activities. Skate park side elevation

Detail And Construction.

Detail Wall Element. The Polycarbonate Skin essentially is an air trap. In winter, internal warm air from the building allows the warm air to pass through insulating it partially; Brick- thermal mass retains the heat during solar gain. During summer an operable hatch opens to allow excess hot air to maintain an optimum air condition of the building.

Reflection

The Project facilitates multidisciplinary activities among Multi ethnic/ cultured groups through collaboration. This is possible by articulating the architecture and by reprogramming the facilities. The building design is designed in keeping 2 essential goals; 1- to keep the existing hamnmagasinet identity and 2- to create transparency within the building for visitors to experience activities in progress. The building program consist of 2 independent accessibilities that are flexible to the buildings need. The ramp is an experiencing element that buys time for visitors to explore the areas and spaces around the central core. Courts and terraces allows maximum day light to penetrate through the building. The logic behind the added Hostel is not only to provide emergency housing but also the opportunity for new arrivals to live and work through contributing within the building activities and thus creating social encounters. In addition to the building facility the integration of the winter garden not only becomes the transitional space but also allows to grow vegetables to feed the cafe. While the building terraces provides access to private users, the undulating roof of the auditorium on the water makes it accessible for public for recreation purposes and great panoramic views. On an urban scale the building becomes a social hub by its immediacy to the skate park and added piazza space along the river. I believe the location is central while harmonizing the activity zones. Bridging the building and making it accessible to Bl책 Vagen makes it easier to approach the site to stumble upon various outdoor activities.

Materiality of the project has also been approached in a sensitive way so to harmonize the old with the new in its context. The choice of the new material is a combination of grey brick that extrudes off from the existing column beam structure, covered with a polycarbonate facade that lightens and highlights the horizontality of the existing facility. The choice of the material also allows for its sustainable attributes like that of the passive wall element. Pirating energy has also been an outlook towards formulating the project. Maximizing on solar energy and the river has proved to be a reliable resourse. Using Underwater turbines can generate enough energy to feed the grid and in turn subsidizing the energy consumption on the proposed facility. The project offers a complex yet flexible program that can change with time and activity. Cultures are induced through collaboartive activities with youths along with other organzations allowing for a natural development.
