Paintball Games Area I Volunteer Recognition Month Celebration Employee Appreciation Day in Area 1 Gamak Mountain Hike
There will be a change to the ITZ Magazine next month, due to the transition and combining of both Area 1 and Area 2 communities; we will include the Area 2 MWR magazine to the ITZ so that you can have both at the same time. We are celebrating the Area 1 Volunteer Recognition Month as well, with a celebration on 23 May, details in the ITZ. We “Kick Off” the Season Opening of the Casey Outdoor Swimming Pool (25 May) and this year the pool is open to our Korean Employees to enjoy as well. The Season Pool entrance fees are listed in the ITZ. We are also celebrating Employee Appreciation Day in Area 1 (24 May). On this day most of Area 1 services will be closed as well as all MWR facilities. This day is to recognize all of our Area 1 Garrison employees for the outstanding work and service they provide to ‘YOU’ the community member! We thank you for understanding and hope to see you the very next day at the opening of the Casey pool!! Casey CAC and Outdoor Recreation is hosting an ‘Open Paint Ball Day’ (12 May)… for the newbies that want to try it and for you veterans to enjoy and take advantage of the newbies…. “LOL!” While you are out and about at the Casey Golf Course having a great dinner… check out the new Wine Selection they offer…. It’s good, with White, Red and Zin wines available. Army Emergency Relief Campaign “wraps up” on 15 May; so if you haven’t contributed yet, but want to, see the folks at ACS and they can help you make that happen! 1 & 7 May, the Casey Bowling Center is closed for maintenance work… but Hovey is still open those days! Lastly, Bill Clark, our very own Directorate of Public Works, ‘Buildings and Grounds’ Chief left us and returned to the USA. He was the magician that made things happen behind the scenes, like ensuring the roads were clear of snow when you came to work, the grass was cut on the garrison and much, much more. Bill you will be sorely missed… Good Luck and thank you for all the support you gave to your MWR Family in Area 1. That wraps it up for me… enjoy May, go out and find your MWR Niche and make it happen!!

UNLOCKS THE DOORS CAMP CASEY
by Victor L. Crouch, LCSW (MFLAC clinical consoler) During the summer of 2017, I traveled to Chiangmai, Thailand to complete 200 hours of yoga teacher training in Hatha and Vinyasa flow. This idea was as crazy as training and running my 1st and eventually my 7th marathon. I discovered yoga in 1997 while I was a Graduate student at the University of Washington. I spent many late nights writing papers, drinking tons of coffee and eating just about anything I could while running between classes, practicum courses, and the extracurricular activities that make college such an awesome experience. As a result, I was in terrible physical shape. I was stressed emotionally and mentally from carrying a heavy academic course-load. Since I needed an elective course I thought a yoga class would be an easy “A.” What I did not know at the time was that yoga would literally save my life.
The numerous benefits of a regular yoga training practice may include: * Increased fitness that includes increased flexibility
34
USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
* Increased muscle strength and tone * Improved breathing (respiration), energy and vitality * Maintaining a balanced metabolism * Weight reduction * Improved cardio and circulatory health * Protection from injury * Improved sleep quality * Improved athletic performance * Improved core and upper body strength (shoulder) * Improved resilience * Improved balance and body alignment * Improved positive outlook * I mproved stress reduction/Relaxation/Peace of mind * Enhanced focus * Improved pain relief What began as an intimidating yoga class quickly became a strength building exercise program. I learned that my yoga practice was my own — and was not based on comparison against someone else. My body’s limitations and potential were unique only to me. Once on my mat, I also became aware how impatient, imbalanced and inflexible I was. I possessed no body awareness and no concept of body alignment. But, in a relatively short period of time, I came to understand that yoga is a mind-body practice that strengthens the body and cultivates the mind for meditation. Through the physical practice of performing asanas or postures, the strengthened body becomes capable of sitting still and meditating. Also,
in the process of learning, the physical practice literally becomes a “moving meditation.”
With the consistent practice of yoga, there are many benefits that can be experienced. There is no need to compare one’s practice with another. Your own version of yoga is assured as you ease into an asana and then another—intentionally, with stability and comfort— guided by your body’s potential and limitation. The point to which your body comfortably stretches is where your infinite potential is located. Close your eyes and slowly breathe in, hold, now exhale and sink deeper into your asana. Incrementally, your yoga practice will help you to unlock the doors to be more present in your life.
CAMP CASEY
As we practice moving our bodies into asanas, we build muscle memory and begin shifting our bodies into proper alignment. Following the basic movements of sun and moon salutation warms our entire body. Performing Primary Series becomes a moving meditation when we no longer think about our movements but are simply following a sequence. Intuitively, our body adapts with practice as muscles are strengthened and stretched. Twisting asanas massage our internal organs to improve digestion; and, planks develop our core and shoulders. While inversions may not be for everyone, there is an experience of being playful with gravity. Through our exploration and consistent practice, we begin to mindfully go inward and may begin to challenge our physical selves.

Because yoga is a practice, strength, flexibility and mindfulness are honed over time. When Soldiers become more muscular through lifting weights and performing other exercises, the addition of yoga may improve overall flexibility and support injury prevention. This reminds us that yoga does not have to be a replacement for traditional exercise but is perfectly suited as an adjunct to any existing exercise program. Additionally, because yoga has a focus on meditation and maintaining calm, this can fit perfectly with the military’s emphasis on mental toughness. In yoga, you don’t have to understand your feelings. Instead, you just release them. Through the movements of yoga and the settling into asanas, there is the relaxation response which causes the release of neuro-chemicals in the body. Yoga evokes this response, creating a soothing effect on the mind. In another way, the tensing and relaxation of muscles during yoga—along with mindful awareness of physical sensations—helps us to relax. When Soldiers stand at attention with their chests out they severely limit their lung capacity through shallow breathing and by not breathing deeply from their diaphragm. Yoga breathing is accomplished through the nose with mouth closed. Eventually, breathing is coordinated with each movement. Inhales are for length and opening while exhales are for deepening folds and twists. Pranayama is the formal breathing technique that is a pathway toward relaxation. Our breath is termed prana or vital energy and is arguably
