From your Family and MWR Director Hello Community Members! It’s good to be back since my complete shoulder replacement in the USA… yep, you can call me the “Bionic Man” ‘LOL!’ But seriously, we have a lot going on in the community this month. You will see several new faces in the community as we transform USAG Red Cloud and Area 1. In our Clubs, Restaurants and Bowling Centers, Mr. Keith Colbert- he is the Chief of Business Operations Jammie G. Hawkins Division. We also have Mr. Tim Higgs popping Director, Family and MWR in and out of our Community Activity Centers, Outdoor Recreation Centers, Fitness Centers, Libraries, Swimming Pools, special community events, Travel and more- he is the Chief of Community Recreation Division and lastly we have our new Community Librarian, Ms. Ann Kemper and she is located at the Main Casey Library. On occasion, you may see a dapper Gentlemen by the name of Jeff Wertz, he is Area North Family and MWR Director; by the way, if you ask him nicely, he might autograph a copy of his published book, but you’ll have to ask him what that book is though! We have much planned for you in the month of April. Keep in mind, to have your taxes completed and turned in to the IRS, watch out for the “jokesters” and their April-Fools pranks and if this weather doesn’t change, hopefully we can see an end to the cold weather and no April Showers! There are many new programs, specials and events coming your way as we move from Spring into the Summer period, so make sure that you have your “ITZ Magazine” readily available at all times to plan your next awesome event. 1 April, Easter Brunch at Warrior’s Creative Catering Center 1 April, Easter Sunday Bowling at Area I all Bowling Centers 8-14 April, National Library Week 14 April, S pring Extravanganza, The Fashion Show at Warrior’s Creative Catering Center 14 April, Everland Tour 15 - 21 April, National Volunteer Week 21 April, S exual Assault Awareness & Prevention 5K Run at Hanson Field House 21 April, R iver Bike Ride and Jihaeng Lunch at Outdoor Recreation 4 May, Lecrae Concert at Gateway Parking Lot Well…. time to get out and about … see you around in the community!

Osan Air Base is located in Pyeongtaek City, Gyeonggi Do, South Korea. The base is located 4.7 miles southwest of the city of Osan. Seoul, the capital of South Korea, is only 30 miles north of Osan. Osan Air Base. Osan Air Base (AB) is one of two major airfields operated by the U.S. in Korea and the only USAF facility in the Republic of Korea (ROK) entirely planned and built by the U.S. from scratch during the Korean War. The base is located 4.7 miles southwest of the town of Osan, for which it is named, and 40 miles south of Seoul, the capital city. Prior to the invasion of the Republic of Korea by the North Korean communists in 1950, the area consisted of several tiny farming villages near the hillsides and a large number of rice paddies areas where the runway now lies. A large gingko tree marked the village square of one of these villages and still stands on a hill in the base golf course. With blocks of shopping & just outside of Osan AB. It’s a haven for the serious shoppers. Shop and enjoy the variety of items offered at the mail and stores in the shopping area of Osan both on and off base. The camp is located in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. It's 40 miles south of Seoul and 60 miles from the North Korean border. Camp Humphreys shoppings area looks like a regular mall with 60 different stores. You can also find a bunch of American food chains. The base has a school, golf course, and even a veterinarian. For the most part, life goes on as usual, but it's a training facility for soldiers. They run drills across the camp to prepare for combat. Right now, about 25,000 people live there, but that number could rise to 42,000 by 2020. Sign up deadline is 6 April 2018. ASSESSMENT
Body Composition
CAMP CASEY
Body weight alone is not a good indicator of overall health and fitness. Body composition is better way to determine your health and fitness level. This assessment help identify the one’s health risk associated with excessively low or high levels of total fat. It is also serves to assess the effectiveness of nutrition and exercise interventions in altering body composition and to monitor growth, development, maturation, and age-related changes in body composition. Body composition is the ratio between fat mass (body fat) and lean body mass (non-fat components). Both essential fat and storage fat constitute total body fat. Not enough body fat is unhealthy. Essential body fat protects delicate organs, provides insulation, and is an important element for nerve conduction. Essential body fat is about 3% for men and 12% for women. However, research suggest that for best health and fitness men’s body fat should range between 10-18%, and the women’s range is 15-23%. Being over-fat, or having a high ratio of body fat to lean body mass, is associated with a higher risk for chronic disease. Body composition has a lot to do with the appearance of a person since muscle takes up less space than fat and weighs more. Athletes and other highly muscled individuals are heavier than average, but not necessarily unhealthy. Body weight alone does not identify body fat values, or accurately determine a negative effect on health.
Camp Casey Health & Human Performance Center (HHPC) Monday of Every Week / 1200 - 1330
Weight and height charts are notoriously inaccurate as an indicator of health and wellness.
How Body Composition Affect Fitness The more lean muscle tissue you have on your body, the more calories you burn while at rest. This is because muscle mass is more metabolically active
38
USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
(uses up more calories). People with a higher muscle-to-fat ratio (lower body fat percentage) tend to have more efficient system and higher fitness level. Increase in the muscle mass can be achieved through variety of resistance training. Spot reduction is a fallacy. One cannot reduce fat stored on a specific point of the body by engaging in an exercise targeting that body part. Continues, low intensity, multi-joint exercises (e.g. running, walking, and swimming) or level of activity and movement during the day will reduce fat stores throughout the body.
Change in one’s body composition measurements will take at least two weeks. Quick losses of body weight in most cases are from loss of water and lean body mass. Slow changes in either weight loss or gain are more likely to be maintained.
Biometrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Biometrical impedance analysis (BIA) is simple assessment used in our fitness center to determine the body composition. A weak electrical current is run through the body to estimate lean body mass and body fat. Lean tissue is a better conductor of electricity than body fat. The speed that the current travels through the body is used in calculation to determine the percentage of body fat. Analysis has to be done in athletic shorts and T-shirt. Do not eat a heavy meal or smoke within 3 hours of this assessment. Avoid vigorous activity few hours prior to test. For best accuracy this test should be repeated for 3-5 consecutive days, using the average of these scores.
Percent Body Fat Standards
CAMP CASEY
Quality sleep and proper nutrition intake will be a 70-80% of your success in achieving body transformation.
Another option for BC assessment is test with Calipers (skinfold) that measures the thickness of the fat below the skin. Commonly measured areas include the abdomen, thighs, and arm (for women) and chest (for man). This measurements are used to estimate how much total body fat is present.

SELF-DIRECT FITNESS CHALLENGE WINNERS (Winter) With the spring rolling in we glad to announce our Winter Self Direct Fitness Challenge Winner
CAMP CASEY
SFC Galindo, Eric HSC, HHBN, 2 ID With 531.8 miles on the bike!
SFC Galindo says: I have always enjoyed riding bikes as a child. When I was in middle school I found I had a knack for running and ran throughout high school and in the Army. While training for the 1st ID 10 miler, I started to get foot injuries. A training partner of mine recommended that I take it easy on running. He suggest to cross train with a bike. I took action on his recommendation and bought my first road bike which was used in 2011. I fell in love with riding and now days is my go-to for fitness. After arriving in Korea I found out Korea has thousands of miles of bike paths and trails all around the country. When riding the views are fantastic especially in the spring. When riding most of the paths and trails have small convenience stores, bicycle shops, rest areas with restrooms. This makes your riding comfortable and you will meet many other bike riders. Riding in Seoul is so beautiful after sunset and the enjoyment is breath taking. Just make sure you have good reflective gear, flashing lights and of course proper head gear. Did you know you can take your bike on the train, on weekends? You can also obtain a special passbook for your riding around Korea. If you are able to collect all the stamps in the passbook you can receive a special medal and certificate. For more information contact SFC Galindo. Happy Riding!
