FY15 JAMES A. CARROLL AWARD WINNER

BUCCANEER BOWLING CENTER DOES IT AGAIN!

The Camp Casey, Buccaneer Bowling Center is celebrating another achievement in receiving the Installation Management Command-Pacific (IMCOM-P), FY15 James A. Carroll, Jr., Excellence in Management Award on June 20, 2016. This was the second time since 2007 that this Family & Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR), bowling center facility earned this award; a fact made even more remarkable, considering that the Buccaneer Bowl was competing amongst hundreds of bowling centers throughout the Army when it was selected as the FY15 winner. For those of you history buffs, here’s a quick trivia. The Carroll Award was first established in 1976 “…as a lasting tribute to James A. Carroll, Jr., a leader in the civilian and military hospitality field until his passing in 1975.” In 1991, the Army established an Excellence in Management Awards program in order to recognize outstanding managers for their accomplishments in the recreation fields of golf, bowling, leisure travel, and even recycling operations.

14

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

This year’s recipient is none other than Mr. Gerald D. Keener, Buccaneer Bowling Center Manager: “It’s a very pleasant surprise to have won this award, however, I want to emphasize that this was a team effort encompassing members of the Area I community: from our bowling staff, to marketing staff, to FMWR leaders and all the way up to garrison command; and of course, our Area I customers. Although this award has my name on it, I’m cognizant of the fact that no one wins this award alone. I’m very honored to have received it, but I knew that we had a very good shot at winning due to the capability of our team and our awesome customers in Area I,” said Keener with beaming pride. Keener, affectionately known by friends and most community members as ‘Fish’ (aka Captain Yarfish), accomplished this feat by leading the facility in the implementation of creative programming, enhanced products and customer service. Among other acknowledgments in winning this award, Keener initiated rigorous cross-training of employees, increased service options for customers, created a full-service bar in the recreational game room, added several ‘Healthy Choice’ items such as Chicken and Tuna Wraps in the Grotto Snack Bar menu, and reduced labor costs while increasing total sales from FY14 to FY15. So how did this bowling manager do it, especially amidst a decrease in accompanied Soldier/Family population due to the Area I transformation? To start with, Keener firmly believes that “if it isn’t fun, it isn’t worth doing,” which basically explains the driving force

that keeps bringing back customers for what is locally known as the ‘Buccaneer Bowl Experience.’

“Fish, has a long history in bowling, as distinguished by the industry in commercial publications such as the International Bowling Magazine in 2013. Simply put, he’s very good at what he does, and when you couple that with his creative programming, his relationship with customers, co-workers and community leaders; not to forget a cast of great, supportive bowling center employees—winning this award becomes reality. I’m proud of Mr. Keener’s accomplishment in winning this award, he certainly deserves it!” said Mr. Pak, Song Yong, Acting Chief, Area I Business Operations Division.

Keener’s creativity and dynamic personality made him a bowling icon with the community. It does not take long for newcomers to learn that Fish or ‘Cpt. Yarfish’ is the man to talk to about bowling. He is passionate about bowling and to the bowlers he serves, constantly networking with units to come up with creative ways to meet their needs. “One popular program that brings Soldiers into the facilities and encourages them to train at the same time is Gas Mask and Ruck Sack Bowling,” said Keener. “Units train by renting the lanes out during non-peak times while team building their way to fun, under conditions that help keep them fit to fight. Another great program allows Soldiers to bowl 2 games for free during lunch, provided they are in duty uniform. This initiative has boosted lunch time sales, brought new bowlers into the facility and provided a fantastic free service to the community,” Keener pointed out. It’s not unusual to see Keener during lunch hours, providing bowling tips while enticing groups of largely novice bowlers to come back for one of his many, unique bowling events. He also offers free bowling lessons for all age groups, and even ‘Unit of the Quarter’ recognition to encourage unit participation in his many bowling center programs. These bowling events include weekly programs such as Red Pin Bowling, Korean/American Fun League, Open Bowling, Tournament’s Galore; and themed events such as ‘Walk the Plank, Yard Arm, Strike the Jolly Rodger, Boo Pins, Reindeer Roundup, National Bubba Day, All Fools Day Bowling,’ and much more. Needless to say, Keener’s unusual yet fun programs, has helped distinguish Buccaneer Bowl as a creative

A Huge Thank You Feature Article

“Winning this award is very nice, I’m humbled and privileged to have received this on behalf of our FMWR team. But these awards are not what we’re here for….we strive each and every day to win our customer’s approval, to see happy and satisfied customers in our workplaces. It’s not all about the money either, because what I’ve found out is that, if we take care of our customers; that in itself helps create an environment of loyalty and appreciation, which in turn, helps us earn our customer’s trust. Meeting our customers’ expectations and earning their trust is awesome— winning this award is icing on the proverbial cake!” Keener added with a warm smile. As Keener has emphatically pointed out, this accomplishment would not have been made possible were it not for the loyalty and support of his customers. Throughout the years, and more so after October 2014 when the Casey Bowling Center has undergone a major renovation into the Buccaneer Bowl, the customers have played a crucial role in the facility’s success. The Area I community has seen its share of Soldiers and families, come and gone throughout the years; likewise, Buccaneer Bowl has seen a good number of novice and expert bowlers during that time, either bowling recreationally or for competition. These same bowlers and other community leaders have helped spread the word about Keener’s bowling center, turning it into the successful facility that it has become. Now it’s time to give back, and throw a little party in the mix for the community. One thing you might not have known about Keener is that he’s an avid, professional poker player who’s competed at several prestigious World Series of Poker (WSOP) events in Las Vegas. Needless to say, poker games and poker tournament coordination comes naturally to him, which is why he is introducing the Buccaneer

Bowl ‘Knock Out Bounty, Texas Hold’em’ event, throughout the month of August. The theme is “16 Men on a Dead Man’s Chest” (16 giftcard bounties) and “Pieces of Eight” (final table of eight), with bounties from 1st to 8th place, featuring prizes that would rival a pirate’s treasure chest. And that’s not all, Buccaneer Bowl is celebrating its 3rd-year anniversary with several programs throughout the month of August. For starters, Keener is hosting a ‘10-bowling game giveaway’ every day of the month; just stop by the facility at 1 p.m., register and take a shot at winning a prize! We haven’t forgotten about the little ones either, so make sure you bring your children (ages 15 and under) on August 6 for Little Bucco Bowling, featuring free shoe rental, and $2 bowling from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. August is also the introduction month of a new themed burger called Barnacle Bill Burger — all this, culminating in a Birthday Bash on Saturday, August 27 from 12 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Buccaneer Bowl. Participants at this event can expect free bowling and shoe rental, take part in the unveiling of the Buccaneer Wall of Fame, participate in a free giveaway every 30 minutes courtesy of QubicaAMF, and perhaps even grab a slice or two of the Buccaneer Bowl birthday cake! “Whether you’re a single Soldier, DOD civilian, family member or KN personnel; please feel free to stop by and join us in the festivities. We’re preparing this appreciation party for you—we’re grateful for your support, and this is our small way of saying ‘Thank You’ for standing by us and helping our small bowling center team succeed throughout the past 3 years. For helping us earn, not just the James A. Carroll Award, but most importantly; for helping us earn your trust,” said Keener with sincerity.

An Unforgettable R&R at Yeonpo Beach, South Korea

Story by: SPC Joshua D. McElroy

22

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

To start things off, what can I say about this year’s Beach Blast, that hasn’t already been said about prior Beach Blasts? I’ve heard BOSS stories before, but now that I had the opportunity to experience it myself—it was a GREAT EXPERIENCE through and through! Our day began at 9 a.m., when we began leaving Area I to make the long trip down to Yeonpo Beach. It took quite a while, but we finally made it to our destination where we were separated by hotel. There appeared to be a lot more people this year according to the Area I BOSS team, considering that just about every hotel in the area was occupied.

I’m sure most of the people can agree when I say the next morning was rough awakening. It was quite entertaining watching people after a hard night of partying, shamble over to the breakfast line. The morning was spent with games and competition, of course, people were already enjoying the music along with their favorite brew! Games like Zorb Soccer, Tube n Noodle Relay, Slip and Slide Kick Ball were in full effect; you could tell these BOSS Soldiers were just glad to be out of the daily grind, enjoying a muchdeserved R&R on the beach.

The main event for the day was soon approaching, but before I go on, know that in my ‘supposed’ party years (18-22) I was already in the Army and raising a family: partying never really made it into my To-Do List—but I was ready to experience it tonight! With that said, the main event kicked off with a Foam & Laser Party, and yes; this was my first experience, and it was a total blast! When the foam hit the fans, and spewed all over the crowd, the partygoers (myself included) went wild, with people covered in foam dancing everywhere, blasted by the music and only getting crazier as the night went on. The party went on and on, but 12:30 a.m. finally came along and it was time to return back to our rooms to get some rest.

We took a leisurely lunch and moved on into the afternoon with more games like Shave the Balloon, Blind Volley Ball, Slip and Slide Flippy Cup and so on. Thankfully the day was beautiful, despite the weather forecast reporting clouds and rain all day. The sun was definitely hot, but boyyyy, that water was ice cold; however, it didn’t seem to dampen the mood of the crowd who were out and about to have fun! As the day ended and night came about, a Latin band took the stage, setting the stage for another wonderful night of partying. Soon enough, the band had every one out and dancing and just enjoying life at that very moment, they had the crowd so excited that they encored for another five songs before they had to make way for the K-Pop Girls to save the schedule as much as possible.

While everyone was still arriving and getting situated, things on the beach were pretty slow but still enjoyable, with various local shops open for business eager to serve both US and Korean customers. Dinner was served right around 6 p.m. with the DJ blasting a variety of hip-hop and dance music to full effect! The anticipation certainly is building up, and you get the feeling the event was just cranking up for something big. After dinner the bonfires were lit up by the beach crew, while the s’mores were placed outside for the taking.

Feature Article

Later that night it was time for the main event: Paint the Beach Party & Bonfire. And let me tell you, they did just that and more! A pile of wood was stacked 8 feet tall and 10 feet around, doused in fuel and set ablaze at one end of the beach, while the Paint Party was held at the other end. With a massive crowd awaiting cannons to start and kick off this year’s paint party, I personally didn’t think the crowd was ready for what was about to go down. Soon enough the cannons went off and the staff started squirting and throwing what seemed like hundreds of gallons of paint into the crowd—paint was everywhere! It was a night to remember, with people soaked from head to toe, dancing their heart outs, forgetting for the time being; stress, deadlines or upcoming missions. This was one of those moments I will never forget. If

24

anything this one night may have made my military tour in South Korea worth it. Once again the night came to an end, although I sure as hell wasn’t quite ready for it to end! To make things worse, I got back to my room soaked in paint with the thought of a hot shower ever so present in my mind. But the hotel I was at, apparently wasn’t reading my mind and not a single drop of hot water existed during that shower! On the last day while everyone was packing and getting ready to leave, I had a chance to talk to PV2 Winter Anderson a BOSS Volunteer for this year’s event from Area III at Camp Humphries, to gain a volunteer’s perspective. “I would recommend volunteering to others because it’s a free trip that not only gets you a lot of volunteer

It was also a good chance for her to meet back up with Battle’s from all across the Peninsula and share a ton of memories. I also spoke with SPC Stephanie Dixon from Area I Camp Red Cloud, she had nothing but good things to say about the trip. “I wanted an experience to remember and to meet people from all over the peninsula. Last night’s ‘Paint Party’ was the most memorable event of the entire trip, I would take this trip all over again in a heartbeat: it had everything a Soldier could ask for, and more to have a good time,” SPC Dixon added.

In closing, I would recommend this trip to anyone trying to get out in a Korean setting and just be a part of a fun, safe and controlled party atmosphere for 3 days and 2 nights. If you ever get the chance, and are looking for ways to let loose and forget the stress of work, the barracks, and just about any other areas that some of us are confined to; make sure you sign up for the next BOSS Beach Blast trip, or participate in other BOSS events on the horizon. It’ll be worth it. For more information contact your local BOSS Representative. You can also reach SPC Joshua McElroy by email at joshua.d.mcelroy3.mil@mail.mil or contact him by phone at 732-6274/6702.

CHIEF NOAH HALE CW4 Noah J. Hale has been on the ‘awesome volunteer’ radar for quite some time now and his giving spirit and kind heart have not gone unnoticed. Chief Hale arrived to Area 1 in August of 2015 on active duty assignment. He embraced Written by his assignment immediately and wasted Amanda Johnson no time taking opportunities not only to see the country, but also to give back to the community. Shortly after coming to Korea, he jumped right into volunteering for the Red Cross. His commitment to giving freely of his time to others is in the true spirit of volunteerism and much deserving of recognition.

One of his most memorable moments of why he volunteers is captured in a story from Mr. Hale. “My favorite volunteer project was as a teen when I provided free gardening and landscaping services to senior citizens. Many times, these individuals could either not afford or physically perform the work, and their yards paid the consequence. A lady once told me that she stays indoors because she was embarrassed about her yard and could not enjoy being outside in such an overgrown mess. I immediately went to work on her yard and will never forget the smile on her face when she began to spend more time outside, enjoying her yard.”

Army Community Service

V

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

In Area I, Mr. Hale volunteers occasionally as a cook with both the chapel and the Red Cross. He helped cook food for the Fall Festival event presented by the chapel, and helps during cookouts such as the Super Bowl party that Red Cross hosts across Area I communities. One opportunity he especially enjoyed was assisting at the Christmas party hosted for the DMZ Soldiers, bringing joy with a home-style meal, gifts, prizes and fellowship that normally accompany celebrations of the holiday season. The personal satisfaction of helping others, smiles, hugs, comments and the friendships he has developed over the years, are only a few of the reasons Mr. Hale chooses to volunteer. He strongly encourages other Soldiers to volunteer as a way to grow, build character, network, and learn new things. Chief Hale will soon be retiring and we wanted to take this opportunity to say thanks for his service in the U.S Army as well as all his volunteer service, both of which have made a difference in the lives of many. Thank you for your service Chief Hale!

Volunteering is close to the Chief’s heart, as shown by a volunteer record that spans the majority of his life. His first experience was with the church he attended as a child, volunteering at a local soup kitchen. Later on, he participated in several volunteer projects as a Boy Scout. When Mr. Hale joined the military, his volunteering was not only a way to give back to the community but also provided solace for him while deployed and away from his family.
