Vivaldi Ski Park Trip

“Another Awesome Day on The Slopes” Story and Photos by CPL Joshua D. McElroy
Winter is upon us! While some of us are most likely hiding inside trying to escape the cold, others like myself are out enjoying everything winter has to offer. One of those winter things is snow—lots and lots of it! Recently, I spent an unforgettable Saturday in December 2016 at the Vivaldi Ski and Snowboard Resort with Area I FMWR Outdoor Recreation. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this trip as the last time I tried to snowboard it was at an indoor slope, and although it wasn’t really something to get excited about…..I can guarantee you, this experience was nothing like the last. We arrived at the resort early Saturday morning and made our way to the ticket booth. We thankfully arrived before the lines got insanely long (winter sports is apparently huge in Korea!). With my expectations low from my last snowboarding experience, I kept thinking people were going to be everywhere and I’m not going to have any space to enjoy…. well, I was wrong. This time, the slopes were huge

enough to accommodate large numbers of skiers and snowboarders alike. After gathering my snowboard gear and changing into my ‘snowboard action figure’ outfit, I eagerly took the nearest ski lift to the top of the mountain. Little did I realize this lift actually led to the UpperIntermediate / Expert / Black Diamond slope—this was no ‘bunny slope’ for beginners like me! It was too late now, and after a while deliberating on whether my life insurance will take care of everything else, I finally convinced myself into choosing the lesser of three evils: the Upper-Intermediate slope. So I strapped my snowboard and made my way to the starting point. As I looked down the steep slope it didn’t look so bad, but there were turns I couldn’t see around, and the whole time all I could think of was: “What have I gotten myself into?” I finally told myself to suck it up, then I stepped off and was on my way. And believe it or not, I didn’t fall for at least 25 feet later, although when I did, I re Who would have thought right? Now I’d love to say that was the first and last time I fell on my way down….but the truth is, I ended up making an MOS out of that slope, on this fateful day. But back to the main subject at hand: lesson learned from my experience. If I could recommend a slope to go down from the very top of the Vivaldi Mountain, it would
one-on-one ski lesson by the BOSS President, I think I can finally ski on my own,” SPC Lopez said with a smile. PFC Fernando Lopez was lucky enough to have our very own Casey/Hovey BOSS President, SPC Lisa Eckman, an experienced skier, to have joined the trip providing basic ski stance lessons, and getting him to the point where he could go down the slope on his own. PFC Lopez added that if he took anything from this adventure, it was a built up determination to never give up despite the many stumbles and falls. SPC Eckman was so happy to have the chance to ski while here in Korea, and is super excited about the next overnight BOSS Life Skills Ski Trip in February 2017. “Teaching PFC Lopez to ski was a blast, it was fun to be on the bunny slopes with all the kids and laughing all day, it’s like teaching your kids to ride a bike. But now that PFC Lopez can ski on his own, I’m looking forward to taking on some of the more challenging advanced-level slopes,” said SPC Eckman. In conclusion, whether you’re new to snowrelated activities or have taken part in winter sports all your life; this trip was great for all levels of skiers and snowboarders alike. It was a great chance to get away from the day to day grind and do something else other than work, creating fun and exciting memories during your time in Korea. I greatly enjoy an experience like this every now and then, something to help you get away and refocus, to appreciate the meaning of life. And I tell you what, there’s nothing like falling down ¾ of a mountain trying to figure out snowboarding to really make you contemplate it—you get the chance to leave with a real sense of accomplishment for the day!

be the Upper-Intermediate slope and taking the first fork on your left which links up directly to the bunny slope—where I should’ve been in the first place! Nonetheless, I kept right at it, fell more than a couple times, and continued to perfect my newfound art. I’m sure I was on that slope for about an hour, carefully making my way down….determined to make it to the bottom in one piece! I was tired, but I had plenty of time on the snowboard and plenty of time seeing my life flash quickly by as I tumbled across the ice! I for one was done once I finally made it to the bottom of the slope, so I put my board up and started walking around. The facility itself was really nice, employees everywhere were very kind and eager to help snowboarders who were having a blast shredding the slopes. I had one kid about 17, who after seeing me tumble past him kept making an effort to see if I was okay every time I fell, then congratulating me once I finally made it to the bottom. I’m sure you’re wondering at this point: Is he really that bad? Well the answer is no, not anymore! There’s no shame in my game, I was horrible in the beginning and at the end, but I’d like to blame the end on exhaustion! This was definitely a lifelong experience for me that I would love to do again. If nothing else I certainly got a great workout. For a few Soldiers such as PFC Lopez who hails from Houston, Texas; this was their first time to experience snow, more so to ski on top of it! “This was a memorable trip for me since it was my very first ski experience. If given the opportunity, I would definitely sign-up for the trip again. After being given a 4-hour,

Instead of merely viewing paintings (as in a typical art gallery) visitors can interact with the paintings, posing themselves just right so that they look as if they are part of the original work. THE TAX MAN COMETH: AREA I TAX CENTERS SET TO OPEN JANUARY 30TH
Another year has begun, and with it comes yet another tax season. Area I Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians, and dependents can take comfort in knowing that the Area I Tax Center’s will be offering free tax preparation services. The Tax Centers will be located at Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud (CRC), with mobile tax teams servicing Camp Stanley and the Joint Security Area (JSA). Last year, the Area I Tax Centers saved eligible clients over $200,000 in tax preparation fees. Not only does the Army tax center program save clients hundreds of dollars in preparation fees, but most Soldiers and eligible clients are actually able to obtain tax refunds. In fact, Area I Tax Centers alone were able to recover $1,556,119.00 in refunds. Each tax preparer is trained and certified by the IRS, guaranteeing quality tax preparation that matches or exceeds any commercial tax preparation service.
When can I file my tax returns? Tax returns may be filed as soon as all tax forms are received. This year, active duty Soldiers will receive their W-2s in late January, and the Tax Centers themselves will open on Monday, January 30th.
When will the Area I Tax Centers open? The Camp Casey Tax Center, located on the 2nd Floor of Maude Hall, will open on Monday, January 30th. The CRC Tax Center, located in building S-267 (Housing Office), room 106, will also open on January 30th. Mobile tax teams will be visiting Camp Stanley and the JSA beginning in February.
What hours will the tax centers be open? Both the Camp Casey and CRC Tax Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 0930 to 1700, with the exception of Thursday, when the Tax Centers will open at 1300. The Tax Centers will primarily take clients on an appointment basis, with walk-ins available as time permits. The Camp Casey Tax Center will be open for walk-ins on Thursday afternoon.
Who is eligible for tax preparation services at the Tax Centers? Active duty service members, reservists on active duty for more than 29 days, retirees, DoD civilian employees, and dependents are eligible for tax preparation services. Civilian contractors are not eligible for tax preparation services unless they fall into one of the previous categories.
Will it cost me anything to get my tax returns done at the Area 1 Tax Centers? No, tax preparation services through the Tax Centers are free. Our tax preparers are trained to the highest level by the IRS and are able to complete both federal and state tax returns.
Where can I get further information? For further information, please call the Camp Casey Tax Center at DSN 730-4888.

SSG GLEN D. THOMPSON JR
Staff Sergeant Glen Thompson is a dedicated career Soldier and Volunteer. His first volunteer opportunity in 2002 as a High School Senior at Fort Campbell Kentucky Recreation Center, helped influence a lifetime commitment to volunteering. He further expanded his service through the military and to the military Written by communities after he joined the U. S Army Charles Lyons in 2002. During a recent interview, SSG Thompson made a very solid statement when asked why he loves being a Volunteer. His statement was not your typical response; he cheerfully said, I volunteer not because others cannot; I volunteer when others will not!
Army Community Service
V
COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
SSG Thompson stated once, “Leaders set the example and volunteer themselves.” Simply put, we cannot ask others to do what we would not do ourselves! Furthermore, we can still learn from other Soldiers and provide them sound advice and guidance. He whole-heartedly believes that through volunteerism, many other opportunities for professional and personal development will occur such as networking. And if you are the Senior Volunteer person in your unit and are spearheading a unit-volunteering project….watching other units conduct volunteer activities gives you an opportunity to impact their efforts while strengthening the camaraderie within your unit. Most Soldiers do not realize that volunteering adds experience that they would not have gained normally in the unit for their future resume. Moreover, through that valuable experience, volunteers have the golder opportunity to exemplify aspects of the Army Values: “Selfless service brings pride, professionalism, empathy and makes any person well-rounded.” SSG Glen Thompson is a leader of Soldiers, a volunteer, an advisor and a mentor, and most importantly, is known among his peers as “That Guy to Emulate!” SSG Thompson’s volunteerism and commitment to excellence exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corp invaluable service and support to the Area I Community. For this we are grateful, and say Thank You, you are our Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of January 2017!
Currently, SSG Thompson volunteers with the Camp Casey BOSS Program, which got him involved in community programs such as the monthly Camp Casey Ville Clean Up, the City of Dongducheon Soup Kitchen, and at multiple Dongduchoen Community 5K Runs. He also volunteers at the Camp Casey USO as a front desk representative and in other USO operations and community initiatives. He has taken part and assisted in multiple special events such as the Korean-American Friendship Festival and the Grand Opening of the USO led recreation center at Warrior Base. His passion is volunteerism. He is a humble individual, one who believes all Soldiers should take some time to give back to their community by volunteering and helping others.
