Time sure fly’s when life is good, seems like just yesterday when we were celebrating 2017 as the New Year. The FMWR team and I would like to say “Thank You” for joining us this past year and making lasting memories; whether you stopped in ACS and took a class, used our fitness centers, bowled a game at one of many bowling centers, visited our libraries, Community Activities Centers, rented a bike with Outdoor Recreation, took a trip or dined in one of our many food establishments. “Thank You”

What I like most about welcoming the New Year, it gives us a chance to reflect on the past year and look forward to a new beginning. As we welcome and celebrate the 2018 New Year, FMWR looks forward to providing you with lots chances to make new memories, with adventures, programs, trips and having plain good old fashion fun. FMWR starts the New Year off with celebrations on Dec 31st at Camp Casey Gateway and CRC Mitchells, then look for events at all our BOD facilities celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King’s Birthday. And don’t forget to come join us in celebrating Super Bowl LII; at Mitchell’s Club and Gateway Club. Take advantage of local events such as the 2018 Winter Olympics taking place in Pyeongchang, South Korea from 9-25 Feb. Followed by the XII Paralympic Winter Games in Pyeong Chang 9-18 March 2018. Take the time to journey through the ITZ, and see what is happening around USAG Red Cloud and Area I, from trips to tours or just relaxing at one of our FMWR Facilities. Remember if you don’t see something ask the knowledgeable staff that is there to assist you. We have a lot in store this month and for the rest of the year; so keep abreast of happenings by getting your copy of ITZ Magazine. Receive our latest updates by signing up for our weekly “Warrior Compass” that comes out via e-mail every Wednesday. To sign up for “Warriors Compass” e-mail unpi.chong.ln@mail.mil. Looking forward to seeing you out and about.

Have a safe and Happy New Year

BCOMPOSITION ODY

ASSESSMENT

Body Composition

CAMP CASEY

Body weight alone is not a good indicator of overall health and fitness. Body composition is better way to determine your health and fitness level. This assessment help identify the one’s health risk associated with excessively low or high levels of total fat. It is also serves to assess the effectiveness of nutrition and exercise interventions in altering body composition and to monitor growth, development, maturation, and age-related changes in body composition. Body composition is the ratio between fat mass (body fat) and lean body mass (non-fat components). Both essential fat and storage fat constitute total body fat. Not enough body fat is unhealthy. Essential body fat protects delicate organs, provides insulation, and is an important element for nerve conduction. Essential body fat is about 3% for men and 12% for women. However, research suggest that for best health and fitness men’s body fat should range between 10-18%, and the women’s range is 15-23%. Being over-fat, or having a high ratio of body fat to lean body mass, is associated with a higher risk for chronic disease. Body composition has a lot to do with the appearance of a person since muscle takes up less space than fat and weighs more. Athletes and other highly muscled individuals are heavier than average, but not necessarily unhealthy. Body weight alone does not identify body fat values, or accurately determine a negative effect on health.

Camp Casey Health & Human Performance Center (HHPC) Monday of Every Week / 1200 - 1330

Weight and height charts are notoriously inaccurate as an indicator of health and wellness.

How Body Composition Affect Fitness The more lean muscle tissue you have on your body, the more calories you burn while at rest. This is because muscle mass is more metabolically active

24

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

(uses up more calories). People with a higher muscle-to-fat ratio (lower body fat percentage) tend to have more efficient system and higher fitness level. Increase in the muscle mass can be achieved through variety of resistance training. Spot reduction is a fallacy. One cannot reduce fat stored on a specific point of the body by engaging in an exercise targeting that body part. Continues, low intensity, multi-joint exercises (e.g. running, walking, and swimming) or level of activity and movement during the day will reduce fat stores throughout the body.

Change in one’s body composition measurements will take at least two weeks. Quick losses of body weight in most cases are from loss of water and lean body mass. Slow changes in either weight loss or gain are more likely to be maintained.

Biometrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) Biometrical impedance analysis (BIA) is simple assessment used in our fitness center to determine the body composition. A weak electrical current is run through the body to estimate lean body mass and body fat. Lean tissue is a better conductor of electricity than body fat. The speed that the current travels through the body is used in calculation to determine the percentage of body fat. Analysis has to be done in athletic shorts and T-shirt. Do not eat a heavy meal or smoke within 3 hours of this assessment. Avoid vigorous activity few hours prior to test. For best accuracy this test should be repeated for 3-5 consecutive days, using the average of these scores.

Percent Body Fat Standards

CAMP CASEY

Quality sleep and proper nutrition intake will be a 70-80% of your success in achieving body transformation.

Another option for BC assessment is test with Calipers (skinfold) that measures the thickness of the fat below the skin. Commonly measured areas include the abdomen, thighs, and arm (for women) and chest (for man). This measurements are used to estimate how much total body fat is present.

T C E R I D F L SE FITNESS E G N E L L A CH S R E N N I W (Fall)

CPT Bylsma, Brenan A. C co, 1-9 CAV/CPT Running has always been a passion of mine. This year I decided to take it to the next level and set a goal for myself. I’d record my daily mileage and aim to run 1,200 miles in 2017. This long term goal allowed me to set monthly goals based on work and my previous month(s) mileage. I needed to run 100 miles a month but because of training this wasn’t always possible. So I had months like January where I ran 160.5 miles and others like May where I ran 88. Having a long term goal and attainable short term goals provided me the extra motivation I needed to get out on days I would have otherwise taken off. It has been a really fun year and I can’t wait to see what 2018 holds! 26

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

As three month (September, October, and November) of the Self-direct Fitness challenge ended we have a two winners who had accumulated total amount of mileage: 1ST PLACE Bylsma, Brenan – 301 mi running, plus CPT Bylsma has 1,257.5 miles covered throughout 2017! 2ND PLACE Garza, Marcus - 134 mi running and 130 mi biking

SGT Garza, Marcus I always like to stay in shape, whether it was running, biking, or recently lifting. Being able to keep up with my boys when they get older is probably what motivates most and just trying to set new personals records is a second motivator. I made the time by just adding the bike to the end of my gym workout. Running is usually my stress reliever, I listen to music and I run till I feel better
