Hello Area I!

COL Brandon D. Newton Garrison Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

Area I Team, I would like to take this opportunity to say how excited I am to be joining this great group of professionals who work every day to ensure that we provide excellent services to all of our Soldiers here in Area I. FMWR has a long and distinguished history of providing the balance that ensures we are ready to face the most difficult challenges in our everyday lives and missions. I look forward to being a part of the team and ensuring we continue to provide opportunities for recreation, relaxation, and fun. I hope we can continue the great tradition that allows Soldiers, families and units the resources to thrive in this stressful and challenging operational environment. “Soldiers should expect that they are entitled to the same quality of life as is afforded the society they are pledged to defend.” This is an important part of the FMWR philosophy, and will continue to shape our efforts here in Area I. FMWR has been a part of our Army since 1903. A lot has changed since then. As we look to the future, we know that there will be adjustments to the programs and services as we adapt the Area I footprint. My pledge to you is to do my best to continue to make smart adjustments to our services in order to continue FMWR’s tradition of providing the best available options for our Soldiers. I look forward to working with you all and continuing a great tradition of FMWR services!

June has come and gone. Last month, our new Garrison Commander, COL Brandon D. Newton received a warm welcome at the 22 June, Change of Command Ceremony followed by an awesome reception at Mitchell’s Club. If you missed the ceremony and didn’t have a chance to enjoy the welcome reception—then you simply missed out! But hey, don’t worry, you’ll catch a few more continuing through the summer as many commanders will be changing out commands.

It’s been a busy June for FMWR, and we’re not expecting it to slow down in July, so here’s a preview of what to expect this month: • July 1-5, Bangkok Thailand Tour • July 2, Darryl Worley Concert at Casey Golf Course — great performer, great show! • July 3, Independence Day Celebration with contests, live music, food, fireworks and a Salute to the Nation! • July 4, BOSS 4th of July Party and Area I Sports 5K Run • July 16 & 23, Boryeong Mud Festival – Just promise mom you won’t come home muddy! • July 30, Caribbean Bay Tour ....and much, much more! Child, Youth and School Services officially closed their doors on July 1st….it has been a great run for this best kept secret on the peninsula, we wish the Casey CYS Services team a fond farewell. Turn to the CYS Services’ page for photos and a farewell message by the CYS staff as they reminisce about their time in Area I.

Command Sergeant Major, USAG Casey

Turn to page 2 for our new Garrison Commander’s message, and join us as we welcome COL Newton and his family, to our Area I community.

Friends, community members, we’ve got more in store for you, peruse the ITZ magazine and find your niche!

Each year HQ, IMCOM FMWR recognizes Excellence in Army Recreation. The CRC BOSS program has won a “Best in the Pacific” award every year since 2013, and in recognition of this accomplishment, U.S. Army IMCOM, FMWR sent Mr. Jammie G. Hawkins, FMWR Director a congratulatory letter and a CRC BOSS plaque award and certificate—as well as a $2,500 cash award for the CRC BOSS Program. “I am very proud of the Area I BOSS program and their Community Activity Center Advisors on their successful recognition for being the best not only within the Pacific Region, but also in the Army,” Mr. Hawkins pointed out. “The Camp Red Cloud BOSS program has also been the recipient for Best BOSS program in Pacific Region three years running. As the leader of this great Family and FMWR directorate, I know the team goes the extra mile to make the Soldiers, civilians and their family members happy! Congratulations Mrs. Black and CRC BOSS Team!” said Mr. Hawkins with a wide smile.

Mrs. Yong Ae Black CRC CAC Director & CRC BOSS Advisor

So what separates CRC BOSS from the rest of the pack? Well, I asked Mrs. Yong Ae Black, the CRC Community Activity Center (CAC) Director and CRC BOSS Advisor, this same question. Her response summed up, that it is indeed an “all-out, team effort.”

they work hand-in-hand with Commanders, Command Sergeant’s Majors, and First Sergeants to provide superior leisure programs, quality of life issues, and life skill training for Soldiers. It is this presence of mind and ability to flex with change that has allowed the CRC BOSS program to remain successful in a location such as USAG Red Cloud which has experienced some major changes in community demographics and Soldier Transition within the last year.

BOSS

bestowed upon this stellar BOSS team.

In winning the 2015 Excellence in Army Recreation Small Garrison, BOSS award, the judges noted the following achievements by CRC BOSS: resolution of 9 Quality of Life (QOL) issues, sponsored or coordinated 14 community service events and 24 recreation/ leisure events which positively contributed to the overall quality of the program. The 4,174 volunteer hours donated by 255 BOSS members, were by far the largest supplemental resource contributing to the success of the CRC BOSS program. This effort alone from CRC BOSS resulted in monetary savings upwards of $91,826 volunteer hours throughout USAG Red Cloud and Area I. So what’s next for the CRC BOSS Program? Well, there are still plenty to do with CRC BOSS in FY16. Upcoming events include Life Skill Training, Bowling Lock-In; Hoop it Up, Kickball Tournament, Video Game Competitions, and a few more local tours to finish out the year. Once again, Congratulations CRC BOSS, the 2015 Award Winner for Excellence in Army Recreation— Job Well Done!

“I am proud to be the CRC BOSS Council Advisor,” she tells me with no reservations. “Although winning this award is a crowning achievement for CRC BOSS, this is not a 1-man (or woman) achievement, but an all-out, team effort which our Soldiers earned through hard work and a commitment to providing excellent programs for the community,” she added with a smile. Mrs. Black is well versed in FMWR community activities and knows well the BOSS mission at hand. She is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for single or geographically single Soldiers of all ranks, by providing them an effective voice at the installation where they serve. The BOSS Council itself consists of a BOSS President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Mrs. Black provides a guiding hand to the BOSS Council composed of Area I Unit Soldiers as IN THE ZONE

I’m a Child & Youth Program Assistant. I like my work. It makes me happy. Whenever new children come to the CDC, I and other teachers instruct the children and let them learn about rules and life manners. And children would change, surely better than before. With this result, I always feel happy and proud of my job. But the CDC is now closed and I can’t work with the same children and coworkers, and I can’t see the children grow. But “Everything is gonna be all right!!!^^” So I hope my co-workers and CDC friends are happy and healthy.

Elena Smeltz, Coordinator, Camp Red Cloud, Child, Youth and School Services; symbolically hands over the Child Development Center keys to the USAG Red Cloud Garrison Commander, COL Brandon Newton, during a Key Turnover on June 23, 2016.

I worked in CYS Services for the last 5 years. I was happy while making healthier food for the children. I felt fulfillment and happiness when they are enjoying my food. I very much appreciate the people who worked with me: my Coordinator, Director, and Co-Workers—and especially, children who grew up with my food. I have been so happy ever since. I began work in CYSS. It was a great place to work. Thank you for all, have a good a day^^

I really enjoyed our time together, but it’s time for us to move on. You get a strange feeling when you’re about to leave Korea…like you’ll not only miss the people you love now at this time and this place, knowing that you’ll never be this way ever again. Wishing you all good luck in your future jobs and much happiness as you begin a new chapter in your life. Yi Chong Hyon - CYPA

Maeng, Kumchu - Head Cook Looking back on my time here at CYS Services, I have to say in all honesty that I have learned quite a lot and I have enjoyed doing it. My co-workers have been a joy to get to know but the best part by far, has been the children. Interacting with them on a daily basis has lessened my homesickness a little. I am sad to see the center close, and sad to have to say goodbye to friends and families. Such is the nature of being connected to the military. But given that nature, I am hopeful that someday, somewhere, we may meet again. Beth Brown - Administrative Assistant

I served as a Child and Youth Program Assistant (CYPA) from Aug 2013 to present in the CYS program. The 3 years I spent in CDC is the most valuable and thankful time I’ve ever had. My beautiful co-workers and lovely kids, thank you all! And I’d like to say thank you to my Managers for helping me anytime I needed help. I am going to miss my people. Chong, In Yong- CYPA My journey here at Camp Casey, CYS Services serving as the Assistant Director, began almost two years ago. I have seen a lot of people come and go. I have also gained a lot of friendships throughout our stay here. This has been a wonderful place to work. It is extremely sad to see CYS Services leave Camp Casey. My concern will be only for the children left here, how this closure will affect them and if they will receive the quality care that they deserve. Looking forward, I am excited with what the future holds and the new beginnings to embark upon. Chawanda Reynolds - Assistant Director Been working with Camp Casey, Child, Youth and School Services for over 3 years. Being a Pre-School Lead was an amazing experience. You make many bonds with parents and of course the children. My co-workers were my family and I love them. Working in a CDC in South Korea has its advantages and disadvantages, and working with both US and KN staff was always amazing. This year I had the privilege of being the Facility Director and I got to see it from the other side of the house. I still feel the same, you have to have a special kind of heart and patience to work in this type of environment. The closing of the CYS Services is very heart breaking to me, because I know it will not be there when I look at this building again. I will cherish the time I worked in Camp Casey, Child, Youth and School Services. Tina Hernandez - Facility Director

I have been with USAG Red Cloud CYS for slightly less than a year and tasked with the unpleasant responsibility of shutting the once robust program down. Watching children and staff leave in droves has made for a difficult journey. Classrooms and halls once filled with laughter and cheerful voices have been replaced with echoes of emptiness. But, as much as we have emptied the building of furniture, the quality of programming and the warmth, love, devotion and care the staff lavished upon the children every day is still abundantly evident. I feel honored and proud to have been given the opportunity to meet and serve such a wonderful and welcoming community albeit, for a short time. I thank you all for your support and hope that your time in Korea, with your family, has been a memorable one. Wishing you all safe journeys and best of luck in your future endeavors – until we meet again! Elena Smeltz – Coordinator

Celebrating our sixth and final anniversary, and the Month of the Military Child, the USAG Red Cloud CYS Services will be closing our doors. Over the years I have witnessed a variety of sports programs for different age groups in support of the entire Area I military community. As one of the original first three employees, I have observed hundreds of youth in the development of their fundamental motor skills, physical fitness, and team and individual sports enjoyment. Bittersweet and sad moment as we depart what I believe was the best Korean assignment location, to live and to bring up our families. Our sports programs have planted the seed for our kids. Good Luck to our USAG Red Cloud community past and present. Anthony Nanes Jr. – Youth Sports and Fitness Director

DOWN BUT NOT OUT Camp Casey Lodge is ready to accommodate the closure of the CRC Lodge. Under the supervision of Ms. Constance Roderick, the Camp Casey Lodge has set itself apart from the other Army Lodges in several ways. Outside of being the first Army lodge to offer Wi-Fi as part of room rental, and the ONLY Army Lodge to offer sundry items, it also was the first to use commercial grade LG washer and dryer equipment to complement the professional quality amenities of the hotel. “Due to my years as a hotel manager in the civilian world and my CHA certification,” Roderick elaborated. ”I have a different perspective on handing the affairs of the hotel … and I believe this knowledge and experience helps set me apart from my peers.” Since taking over at Camp Casey, Ms. Roderick has been allocated upwards of $3 million for renovations. “Because this base (Camp Casey) was on the list to be closed at one point, upgrades that should have been made were not being made. I saw this as my responsibility and made it a primary objective to see this place brought up to standard,” she stated. As a result of all that effort, the Casey Lodge

has undergone extensive renovation which further enhanced the level of comfort through significantly improved room amenities and lodging services. But don’t take our word for it, we challenge you to check it out and compare your experience with the lodge’s hotel counterparts in Dongducheon or even the Uijeongbu community. You’ll be surprised that in terms of value and comfort, the Casey Lodge will not disappoint. So with CRC lodge closing don’t forget that the professionals who run it will still be in Area I, providing Army Lodging services for the community, always here if you need them. If you haven’t done so yet, take a trip to the lodge at Camp Casey and check out the top-notch facility and world-class service provided by Ms. Constance and her Area I Army Lodging team. If you would like to learn more about the facility features or to reserve a room, please contact: CRC Lodge (732-6818) or Casey Lodge (730-4247).

She has been a very instrumental piece of the Community Information Program as communication and clarity is key when providing information to our clients, some of which have limited English language skills. Volunteering is not new to Hyeonju. After returning from the United States in 2014, Hyeonju volunteered at a Korean nursing home, and then in 2016 she sought out volunteer opportunities at Camp Casey. Since starting to volunteer at ACS in March, Hyeonju will have accumulated over 200 volunteer hours in just over three months! Hyeonju loves to give back to the military community and also enjoys all the other benefits that come along with volunteering on the installation. The work experience gained at ACS will be useful for her future endeavors. Hyeonju says she benefits because of the positive energy in the office and she feels comfortable when she is at ACS. Hyeonju also likes to volunteer with native English speakers as a way to continuously improve her English as well as gain customer service experience while working with our troops.

Hyeonju has been very inspirational to the ACS team, providing her own positive energy and enthusiasm in assisting families, Soldiers and staff members. One of her favorite quotes is “today is the first day of the rest of your life.” Hyeonju also has her own saying, “If you smile, good fortune will come to you, if you do not smile, good fortune will leave.” This quote is the reason you will always see a smile on Hyeonju’s face!

Fast forward a couple years and her family was eventually stationed at Camp Casey where she began volunteering in March 2016 at Army Community Services as a Program Support Assistant. To say that ACS is ‘very lucky’ to have her is an understatement.
