Hello Area I Community Members, Time flies when you are having fun, doesn’t it!! May was a busy month for Family and MWR and we continue to offer even more for you in this month of June. We just found out that “Notre Dames” Coach Lou Holtz is paying Area I a visit on 3 June and will be meeting and greeting members in the community! How often does one get to meet a legend like Lou Holtz!!! Here is a glimpse at what you can expect in

June: 10 June – High Ropes Course & Zip line with Outdoor Recreation. 14 and 17 June - Army Birthday Celebrations on … check out the details inside the magazine. 17 June - Father’s Appreciation Day at the Casey CAC. 16-18 June - Beach Blast with BOSS. 24 June Monterio Water Ski & ATV Adventure with Outdoor Recreation. …. And much, much more… take a look at the ITZ and find out all the details for the above and more. Hey, are you aware that we offer IPA beer at “Bama's Pub and Grill, Gateway Club and Mitchell’s Club; yes we do “Warrior IPA.” We are the only Area that offers its own IPA beer and you can buy your own logo “Warrior IPA” Beer Mug… check with your bartender for details! Just a reminder, that Area I still offer’s vehicle registration safety inspections…. If you are renewing your registration or registering a vehicle for the first time, head up to the Auto Skills Shop and get your vehicle inspected; no need to go up to Yongsan for that! Got a camping trip, fishing trip or back yard party planned in June? Need equipment like tables, chairs, tents, grills, etc.? Don’t look any further than the Outdoor Recreation Rental Program… inside the ITZ, you’ll find the list of equipment available to rent or call them at 7306195/6187 for more information! Have a great June, be sure to wear plenty of sunscreen, stay hydrated and peruse the ITZ to find your Niche. See you out and about Area I!

“IN THE ZONE” 2ID PATCH HUNT Find the hidden 2ID Patch in this month’s ITZ Magazine. The first person to locate it correctly and comes to the FMWR Marketing Office (S-2475, Room 132), will receive a FMWR Prize Bag. • Only one winner per month. • The 2ID Patch on this page does not count. • The contest starts on the first work day of the month (Not when the magazines is delivered). • USAG Red Cloud and Area I, FMWR personnel and their family members are not eligible. • FMWR Marketing Hours are Monday – Friday, 0800-1700. Except for Holidays we will be closed.

DMZ Tour

The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea which runs along the 38th parallel. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half. The north side of DMZ is the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea. The DMZ is 250 kilometers (160 miles) long, approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) wide. Though the zone separating both sides is demilitarized, beyond that strip the border is one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world. The Northern Limit Line, or NLL, is the disputed maritime demarcation line between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea, not agreed in the armistice. The coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily militarized

Joint Security Area (JSA) Panmunjeom is only 0.5 miles in diameter. Designated as the Joint Security Area (JSA) between the U.N and North Korea, it is outside administrative control of South and North Korea. The U.N and North Korea sides each operate 6 guard posts and 35 security guards reside inside. Since the axmurder incident on 18 August 1976, by North Korean soldiers, security guards are forbidden to cross over to the opposing side`s area.

Military Armistice Commission

3rd Infiltration Tunnel

Conference Row seen from the northern side of the JSA

Military Armistice Commission (MAC) The Military Armistice Commission IMAC) has held secretary`s meetings, joint duty officer`s meetings and general meetings for observation of the Armistice Agreement since its signing. General meetings have been suspended since a Korean Army General was assigned as the Chief Representative of the Unite Nation Command on 25 March 1998. Instead of the general meeting, Army General`s Meetings have been held since then. Informal contacts have been held between the United Nations Command and the North Korean Panmunjeom mission since May 1994. Joint duty officer meetings can be called by either side.

Only 27 miles from Seoul (less than an hour`s drive), the third tunnel was discovered in October 1978. Almost identical in structure to Tunnel 2, the a mile-long tunnel is 6 feet high and 7 feet wide. It penetrates 0.3 miles south of the Military Demarcation Line at a point 2.5 miles south of the panmunjeom, running through bedrock at a depth of about 240 feet below ground. Capable of moving a full division (plus their weapons) per hour, it was evidently designed for a surprise attack on Seoul. This tunnel is only 1.2 mile from a key outpost defending the Munsan corridor leading to Seoul.

Dora Mountain Station

Dora Observatory is situated in Paju (Gyeonggido) and at the northernmost point of the Military Demarcation Line of the Western Front. The Dora Observatory replaced the previous Songaksan Observation Post which is now closed. From the observatory, visitors can overlook North Korea and its various locations including Gaseseong, Songaksan, Kim I1-Sung statue, and Cooperation Farm (Geumamgol). The observatory offers 500 seats, VIP rooms and abundant parking space. It was first opened to the public in January 1987.

Dora Mountain Station is at the northernmost end of South Korea which is 0.4 miles away from the southernmost tip of the DMZ. At Dora Mountain Station, which was globally spotlighted because of the visit by President Bush on 20 Feb 2002, is an uncompleted station of reconciliation between North and South Korea. A special worshipping train was operated across the Imjin River on 12 Feb 2002 following the opening of Imjin River in October 2001, 51 years after the railroad was blocked. The guidepost at Dora Mountain Station which indicates that there are 65 miles to Pyeongyang and 35 miles to Seoul contains the hope and expectation that Korea will not be divided forever. It takes 5 minutes to get from `Imjin River Station to Dora Mountain Station` ,however, it took 52years for the Gyeongui Line to be restored to Dora Station which was a civilian restricted area. Dora Mountain Station contains our dream to advance to China, Siberia and even Europe via Pyeongyang. The design on the station building is the scene of shaking hands and a Yin-Yang symbol.

Imjingak Flagpoles In the 1980s, the South Korean government built a 98.4 m (323 ft) flagpole in Daeseong-dong, which flies a South Korean flag weighing 130 kilograms (287 pounds). In what some have called the "flagpole war," the North Korean government responded by building the 160 m (525 ft) Panmunjeom flagpole in Kjoeng-dong, only 1.2 km (0.7 mi) west of the border with South Korea. It flies a 270 kg (595 lb) flag of North Korea. As of 2014, the Panmunjom flagpole is the fourth tallest in the world, after the Jeddah Flagpole in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at 170 m (558 ft), the Dushanbe Flagpole in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, at 165 m (541 ft) and the pole at the National Flag Square in Baku, Azerbaijan, which is 162 m (531 ft)

View of the North from the southern side of the JSA

The world's fourth-tallest flagpole (160m) flying a North Korean flag over Kjoeng-dong near Panmunjom

Became the representative unification and security tourist spot due to the painful history of the division and the Korean War. It is located just 4.4 miles to the south of the military demarcation line. `The Bridge of Freedom` ,Which was named when 12,773 Korean prisoners of war returned from North Korea in 1953, there are attractions like the North Korea hall that shows living appliances and photos of North Korea and the 21 ton Bell of Peace which was made with the desire for peace and unification. This place is a unification and security tourist spot where people hope for unification and remember the pain of a divided lad. 2,000,000 domestic people and foreigners visit this place every year.

Villages Both North and South Korea maintain peace villages in sight of each other's side of the DMZ. In the South, Daeseong-dong is administered under the terms of the DMZ. Villagers are classed as Republic of Korea citizens, but are exempt from paying tax and other civic requirements such as military service. In the North, Kijong-dong features a number of brightly painted, poured-concrete multi-story buildings and apartments with electric lighting. These features represented an unheard of level of luxury for rural Koreans, north or south, in the 1950s. The town was oriented so that the bright blue roofs and white sides of the buildings would be the most distinguishing features when viewed from the border. However, based on scrutiny with modern telescopic lenses, it has been claimed the buildings are mere concrete shells lacking window glass or even interior rooms, with the building lights turned on and off at set times and the empty sidewalks swept by a skeleton crew of caretakers in an effort to preserve the illusion of activity.
