“Serving Those Who Serve”
Hello Area I community members! February has come and gone and we are now going into the season of March Madness, St. Patty’s Day and looking for Spring, who appears to be poking it’s head with the incredibly beautiful weather that we have been having, with the occasional snow flurries!

We had a lot for you to do in the month of February and we continue to have a lot for you to do in the month of March.
Have you noticed in this magazine the newest ‘tool’ for you to use in determining what you want to plan in regards to trips, activities, shows and etc.; if not, then look closely for the fold out, it’s our 90 day review of all things happening. It was the brainchild of our Commander, Col. Brandon Newton and it has really taken off as the tool to have! Pull it out, fold it and carry it with you in your pocket or daily planner! So here is a quick ‘sneak-peek’ at what you can look forward to in March- The Army Emergency Relief ‘kick-off’ fund raising campaign, the Water and Spa Day/4 March, Outdoor Archery Shooting/11 March, St. Patty’s Day 5K Run/18 March, Paintball Grand Opening of the Season/25 March, Jeju Island Tour/25-27 March… and this is just the tip of the iceberg as to what we have in store for you this month of March. Peruse the ITZ magazine and find your niche; we are waiting for you to make it happen!!
Deputy Commander, USAG Casey
CSM Jason R. Copeland Command Sergeant Major, USAG Casey
Have a Great Month of March and we will see you ‘out and about!’

ARMY EMERGENCY RELIEF
AER’S ANNUAL CAMPAIGN, MARCH 1 THROUGH MAY 15TH. Did you know, since its incorporation 75 years ago, Army Emergency Relief has faithfully helped the Army “Take Care of its Own” by providing more than $1.7 billion in assistance to over 3.7 million Soldiers and their Families? AER was established on Feb 5, 1942, to collect and hold funds to relieve distress of members of the U.S. Army and their dependents. This guiding principle remains true today and is reflected in their motto of “Soldiers Helping Soldiers.” AER, funded completely by donations, exists solely to provide assistance to active duty, retired Soldiers and their Families. Financial assistance, through interest free loans and grants, along with more than 30 eligible categories of assistance, scholarships for dependent children and spouses, help ease the financial burdens on the lives of Army Families every day.
awarded, dependents of Retired Soldiers received 1,800 scholarships worth $3.9M. This level of assistance can only continue through the generous support of donors. Out of every dollar donated, 87 cents goes to help Soldiers and their Families. You can be a part of AER’s remarkable milestone and help continue this legacy of caring by donating to AER’s annual campaign from March 1 through May 15th. Donations can be turned in to your AER Campaign Unit Representative, your local AER Section, in BLDG 2451, Camp Casey. You can also submit a one-time or recurring donation online at www.aerhq.org. Please consider supporting our annual AER Campaign – together we can continue helping the Army “Take Care of its Own.”
Financial assistance is available at 76 AER sections located on Army installations worldwide. Army Soldiers and their Families can also apply for assistance through reciprocal agreements with Air Force Aid Society, Navy Marine Corp Relief Society, Coast Guard Mutual Assistance, and the American Red Cross. In addition, by visiting AER’s website, www.aerhq.org, active duty and retired Soldiers can find information on available programs, learn about categories of assistance, complete an online application, apply for a scholarship for a child or spouse, make a donation, and read financial statements. In 2016 alone, AER provided $54M in assistance to more than 1,100 Wounded Soldiers and over 36,000 Soldiers and their Families - including almost 7,000 Retired Soldiers and their Families. AER’s Scholarship program awarded in excess of 4,000 scholarships to dependent children and spouses. Of all scholarships

THE TAX MAN COMETH: AREA I TAX CENTERS OFFERS TAX FILING SUPPORT
Another year has begun, and with it comes yet another tax season. Area I Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians, and dependents can take comfort in knowing that the Area I Tax Center’s will be offering free tax preparation services. The Tax Centers will be located at Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud (CRC), with mobile tax teams servicing Camp Stanley and the Joint Security Area (JSA). Last year, the Area I Tax Centers saved eligible clients over $200,000 in tax preparation fees. Not only does the Army tax center program save clients hundreds of dollars in preparation fees, but most Soldiers and eligible clients are actually able to obtain tax refunds. In fact, Area I Tax Centers alone were able to recover $1,556,119.00 in refunds. Each tax preparer is trained and certified by the IRS, guaranteeing quality tax preparation that matches or exceeds any commercial tax preparation service. When can I file my tax returns? Tax returns may be filed as soon as all tax forms are received. This year, active duty Soldiers received their W-2s in late January, and the Tax Centers themselves have been helping the community file their taxes since January 30, 2017. When will the Area I Tax Centers open? The Camp Casey Tax Center, located on the 2nd Floor of Maude Hall, is currently open and has serving customers since January 30th. The CRC Tax Center, located in building S-267 (Housing Office), room 106, has also been open since January 30th. Mobile tax teams are now providing service to Camp Stanley, located at the Camp Stanley Chapel, and the JSA. What hours will the tax centers be open? Both the Camp Casey and CRC Tax Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 0930 to 1700, with the exception of Thursday, when the Tax Centers will open at 1300. The Tax Centers will primarily take clients on an appointment basis, with walk-ins available as time permits. The Camp Casey Tax Center will be open for walk-ins on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1300-1700. Who is eligible for tax preparation services at the Tax Centers? Active duty service members, reservists on active duty for more than 29 days, retirees, DoD civilian employees, and dependents are eligible for tax preparation services. Civilian contractors are not eligible for tax preparation services unless they fall into one of the previous categories. Will it cost me anything to get my tax returns done at the Area I Tax Centers? No, tax preparation services through the Tax Centers are free. Our tax preparers are trained to the highest level by the IRS and are able to complete both federal and state tax returns. Where can I get further information? For further information, please call the Camp Casey Tax Center at DSN 730-4888.

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT
MR. WAYNE AND MS. GENAN ANDERSON
Written by Charles Lyons
Daily life in and around USAG Red Cloud and Area I is wonderful when committed Volunteers are among us. They provide us with the feeling, that, one experiences when a complete stranger shows you quality care; sort of like a stranger buying you a cup of cocoa on a rainy and cold day for no particular reason. We spotlight a married couple - Mr. Wayne and Mrs. Genan Anderson; who arrived in Korea, 22 June 2016, eager to do what they love most, helping others through volunteering. During my interview, they told me, that, they were both raised in families with a “culture to service.” As parents and grandparents they try to set the example of “service” to their five children and twenty grandchildren. Mr. Anderson told me about how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
56

provides opportunities to its members to use their skills and talents during their retirement years to serve others. Mr. Anderson retired with 23 years on active duty from the Air Force. With the Anderson’s understanding of the “military culture” decided to provide that volunteer service in our USAG Red Cloud and Area I community for their 18 months visit to Korea. Both Andersons say ‘this opens so many opportunities for us to meet new people, become acquainted with their background and learn about their culture!” They are Faith Representatives for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the USAG Red Cloud an Area I Chaplain. In partnership with the Chaplain they assist with planning of weekly religious services, fellowship nights, and arrange lessons on family resiliency and scripture study.
They are also active volunteers with the Camp Casey USO; working the front desk and special events such as the last Holiday celebrations. They tutor Soldiers in English, as a second language, and Soldiers preparing to take their SAT and ASVAB exams. They included the Education Center in their efforts by teaching BSEP review classes at Camp Casey and Camp Boniface. They genuinely find joy as they come to love those they serve.
have done much since their retirement in support of not only the military community, but also for the civilian community as well. After conducting this interview with both Mr. and Mrs. Anderson, all I could say was WOWI As I was leaving the Andersons, following my interview at USO, I spoke to a Soldier that was also there about the Andersons and this is what he told me, “When the Andersons are helping you, you get a calming feel that overcomes. The Soldier went on to say; they volunteer their time because they want to, and not for compensation.
Army Community Service
They even assisted the Garrison Chaplain with a family and community event hosted at Camp Red Cloud last October.
The Andersons serve because of “You,” the Service Member! They want to make a difference in your life by helping bring a little of home, while you are so far away from home!” We applaud Andersons for their commitment and spirit of volunteerism. I can personally say, I have come to understand, that, the Andersons do not do this for recognition; but because it’s just what they do! I’m humbled by this couple and believe we are very fortunate to have them in our Area I military community!
While volunteering with the USO at Camp Boniface during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays, they were invited to provide a BSEP review course for the Soldiers at the remote camp. With the unique mission of the JSA, exporting the review course to those Soldier’s during periods that would not compromise their mission was important. The Andersons are presently teaching 15 Soldiers blocks of four-hour classes with reading comprehension, word study, math knowledge, and arithmetic reasoning. As they reminisced on their days on active duty with the military, they shared with me their diverse background of volunteering opportunities, such as providing food for people in need, building beehives in Florida, harvesting grapes in Virginia, helping on a vegetable farm in Colorado, supporting Red Cross blood drives in Virginia, New Mexico and Utah, working fund raising campaigns and serving as members on a board of directors. As one may surmise, both Mr. and Mrs. Anderson
