MEMORIAL DAY 2017 By David Hill It was called the “Great War”. This being the Centennial of the United States entering into it. With that said, let’s not forget the sacrifices that were made. President Woodrow Wilson asked Congress to declare war against Germany, on 2 April 1917. Soon after that the United States entered the “War to End All Wars”, which history shows that was not the case. The horrors of World War I were soon forgotten with the beginning of World War II. This being the Centennial of the United States entering World War I. Many observances are being held around the country in remembrance of the sacrifices made for those who fought for freedom. Let us also remember those who fought our other Wars and Conflicts who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Take time to reflect on what these brave individuals whose lives were sacrificed, so we can live our lives as we want. Learn more about the “Great War” at your local Libraries. Displays with books and DVD’s are being setup. Also you can request a Book Club be started, so you and others can discuss the war. Centennial of the United States of America entering WWI. 2017 marks the centennial of the United States of America entering WWI. To commemorate this momentous occasion, the Army MWR Library has teamed up with partners to create the Remember WWI project. The project will run from March 2017 through Dec 2018. During that time, multiple topics will be explored both in person and online. The Great War was to be the war to end all wars and it shaped a legacy in medicine, technology, geopolitically and socially. The United States declared war on April 6, 1917, allying with England in their fight with the AustroHungarian empire. Many current technologies and traditions got their start during the war. Everything from blood drives to air warfare to prosthesis. The Army MWR Library can track its own roots back to this conflict. The American Library Association oversaw the creation of libraries at the front, staffing and stocking them. The soldiers’ need for professional and recreational reading was fulfilled by librarians delivering books to the military before they left the home front and while in combat. These efforts spurred the eventual creation of the MWR libraries. The core of this project is the www.rememberww1.com website. The website will serve as a central repository to host content, discussion, videos, and photos related to the project. All participants will be given access to post their content.

THE TAX MAN COMETH: AREA I TAX CENTERS OFFERS TAX FILING SUPPORT

Another year has begun, and with it comes yet another tax season. Area I Soldiers, retirees, DoD civilians, and dependents can take comfort in knowing that the Area I Tax Center’s will be offering free tax preparation services. The Tax Centers will be located at Camp Casey and Camp Red Cloud (CRC), with mobile tax teams servicing Camp Stanley and the Joint Security Area (JSA). Last year, the Area I Tax Centers saved eligible clients over $200,000 in tax preparation fees. Not only does the Army tax center program save clients hundreds of dollars in preparation fees, but most Soldiers and eligible clients are actually able to obtain tax refunds. In fact, Area I Tax Centers alone were able to recover $1,556,119.00 in refunds. Each tax preparer is trained and certified by the IRS, guaranteeing quality tax preparation that matches or exceeds any commercial tax preparation service. When can I file my tax returns? Tax returns may be filed as soon as all tax forms are received. This year, active duty Soldiers received their W-2s in late January, and the Tax Centers themselves have been helping the community file their taxes since January 30, 2017. When will the Area I Tax Centers open? The Camp Casey Tax Center, located on the 2nd Floor of Maude Hall, is currently open and has serving customers since January 30th. The CRC Tax Center, located in building S-267 (Housing Office), room 106, has also been open since January 30th. Mobile tax teams are now providing service to Camp Stanley, located at the Camp Stanley Chapel, and the JSA. What hours will the tax centers be open? Both the Camp Casey and CRC Tax Centers will be open Monday through Friday from 0930 to 1700, with the exception of Thursday, when the Tax Centers will open at 1300. The Tax Centers will primarily take clients on an appointment basis, with walk-ins available as time permits. The Camp Casey Tax Center will be open for walk-ins on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1300-1700. Who is eligible for tax preparation services at the Tax Centers? Active duty service members, reservists on active duty for more than 29 days, retirees, DoD civilian employees, and dependents are eligible for tax preparation services. Civilian contractors are not eligible for tax preparation services unless they fall into one of the previous categories. Will it cost me anything to get my tax returns done at the Area I Tax Centers? No, tax preparation services through the Tax Centers are free. Our tax preparers are trained to the highest level by the IRS and are able to complete both federal and state tax returns. Where can I get further information? For further information, please call the Camp Casey Tax Center at DSN 730-4888. 62
