We are going into October with many MWR Change of Operational Hours and you will find them in a “tear-out” insert within this issue of the ITZ. The changes are effective 15 October only, so the hours posted in the ITZ are still valid until 15 October and then refer to the insert.
We feature for you this month, the Country Singing Award Artist “Hunter Hayes” in concert at the Gateway Club, featuring all of his country hits! You certainly don’t want to miss out on this concert and it will be just as awesome as the Chase Rice Concerts we featured in August! As Area I transforms, you as our customers will experience many changes in programs, change of hours, more of this and less of that and we apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your continued patronage and support! Unfortunately, one of those changes is our Casey Arts and Crafts, which close its doors forever; however, we have expanded our Outdoor Recreation Program Location and Services in its place of location. Chuseok Holidays are also upon us this month and many facilities will be impacted by way of operating hours, so that our MWR Team members can enjoy their “Korean Thanksgiving Day” with their family members, as we will be doing in the month of November. We feature a lot of events, programs, trips, specials this month; so please peruse the ITZ Magazine to find your niche and enjoy yourself with what makes you happy. Heads up, we have the Haunted House and Trunk or Treat at Casey CAC for Halloween Events. For those of you that don’t necessarily celebrate Halloween, there is the alternative choice; 2017 Mini Fall Festival being hosted by our Area I Garrison Chaplain and his team! You can find out more about it in this issue of the ITZ magazine! We’ll see you out and about and don’t forget to “mark your calendar” for the Hunter Hayes Concert at the one and only Gateway Club Location!!! Jammie G. Hawkins

DMZ
The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula that serves as a buffer zone between North and South Korea which runs along the 38th parallel. The DMZ cuts the Korean Peninsula roughly in half. The north side of DMZ is the Democratic People`s Republic of Korea, also known as North Korea. The DMZ is 250 kilometers (160 miles) long, approximately 4 km (2.5 mi) wide. Though the zone separating both sides is demilitarized, beyond that strip the border is one of the most heavily militarized borders in the world. The Northern Limit Line, or NLL, is the disputed maritime demarcation line between North and South Korea in the Yellow Sea, not agreed in the armistice. The coastline and islands on both sides of the NLL are also heavily militarized
Dora Observatory
Panmunjeom is only 0.5 miles in diameter. Designated as the Joint Security Area (JSA) between the U.N and North Korea, it is outside administrative control of South and North Korea. The U.N and North Korea sides each operate 6 guard posts and 35 security guards reside inside. Since the Axe Murder Incident on 18 August 1976, by North Korean soldiers, security guards are forbidden to cross over to the opposing side`s area.
Dora Observatory is situated in Paju (Gyeonggi-do) and at the northernmost point of the Military Demarcation Line of the Western Front. The Dora Observatory replaced the previous Songaksan Observation Post which is now closed. From the observatory, visitors can overlook North Korea and its various locations including Gaseseong, Songaksan, Kim I1-Sung statue, and Cooperation Farm (Geumamgol). The observatory offers 500 seats, VIP rooms and abundant parking space. It was first opened to the public in January 1987.

Military Armistice Commission (MAC) The Military Armistice Commission IMAC) has held secretary`s meetings, joint duty officer`s meetings and general meetings for observation of the Armistice Agreement since its signing. General meetings have been suspended since a Korean Army General was assigned as the Chief Representative of the Unite Nation Command on 25 March 1998. Instead of the general meeting, Army General`s Meetings have been held since then. Informal contacts have been held between the United Nations Command and the North Korean Panmunjeom mission since May 1994. Joint duty officer meetings can be called by either side.

3rd Infiltration Tunnel Only 27 miles from Seoul (less than an hour`s drive), the third tunnel was discovered in October 1978. Almost identical in structure to Tunnel 2, the a mile-long tunnel is 6 feet high and 7 feet wide. It penetrates 0.3 miles south of the Military Demarcation Line at a point 2.5 miles south of the panmunjeom, running through bedrock at a depth of about 240 feet below ground. Capable of moving a full division (plus their weapons) per hour, it was evidently designed for a surprise attack on Seoul. This tunnel is only 1.2 mile from a key outpost defending the Munsan corridor leading to Seoul.

The Area I, Leisure Travel Services will be taking a trip to Yeosu which is a coastal city in South Jeolla province, South Korea. Yeosu is one of the country's most picturesque port cities especially at night. Famous for its seafood, beaches, flowers and marinas, it is an international ocean resort and tourist destination as well as being selected as a host city for the 2012 World Expo in Yeosu Harbor. The city of Yeosu consists of the Yeosu peninsula as well as 317 islands (49 inhabited, 268 uninhabited) with population of 300,000. Yeosu is a city of history and loyalty where the headquarters of South Jeolla Province Navy Base was located, and the Great Admiral Yi Sun Shin invented the Geobukseon or "a turtle ship" to save the country while serving as the Navy Commander when Japan invaded Korea in 16th century. Lying about midway along the southern coast of South Korea, Yeosu has cool summers and mild winters thanks to the sea wind and warm current. Its blessed ocean climate also brings Yeosu relatively longer springs and autumns than other regions. Yeosu is developing like most of Korea, but retains a small-town charm that is vanishing from the country.

What Can “JAG Do for You? PCS season is winding down, and the rotational units are settled in and ready to execute the mission. Whether you are excited to be here or not, you still need to make sure your legal affairs are in order. So, how can your Legal Assistance Office help you take care of your legal affairs so that you can focus on the mission and enjoy your time in the Republic of Korea? This article discusses the most common issues the Legal Assistance Office handles. While these may be our most common issues, this is not an exhaustive list, and we see new issues almost every week. If you find yourself in any of these situations, please find your local Legal Assistance Office.
1. Tax Center: Every OCONUS Legal Assistance Office operates a Tax Center from January to June. Servicemembers, Retirees, DoD Civilians, and dependents may visit U.S. Army Tax Centers to receive quality tax preparation services completely free of charge. The Tax Center gets busy every year, so make sure you get an early start and schedule your appointment ASAP. The Legal Assistance Office can also provide advice on tax related issues outside of tax season.
54
USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine
2. Powers of Attorney: A Power of Attorney grants an individual the power and authority to act on your behalf. Soldiers, DoD Civilians, Retirees, and other eligible clients can grant anyone a Power of Attorney. It is strongly recommended, however, that this responsibility only be granted to someone you trust (ex. spouse, parents, or sibling). A Power of Attorney can be used to address countless scenarios. Some common examples include: a Soldiers’ family needs to purchase or sell a home or car, enroll dependents in DEERS, ship or accept a household goods shipment, or appear in court on their behalf. If you need a Power Attorney, please visit your local Legal Assistance Office.
CAMP CASEY
3. Family Law: Family Law is one of the most sensitive topics in Legal Assistance. With family back home, issues may arise with spouses, child support, and child custody. Although Legal Assistance Attorneys cannot represent you in court, or file motions on your behalf, they can assist you with the process. Legal Assistance Attorneys can give general advice on the separation or divorce process, or how child custody is determined. They can also review any documents you receive, including documents you file on your own. On the other end of the spectrum, DoD personnel do get married while they are in Korea. Whether your future spouse is a Soldier, U.S. Citizen, or a foreign national, there is a lot of paperwork involved. Each Legal Assistance office conducts “International Marriage” briefings. If you plan on getting married while in Korea, please visit your Legal Assistance Office. If you intend to marry a foreign national, please visit the Legal Assistance office ASAP, as the paperwork can take months to complete.
4.Rebuttals: If you are the subject of an AR 15-6 investigation, GOMOR (general officer memorandum of reprimand), FLIPL (financial liability investigations for property loss), bar to reenlistment, or negative evaluation report, you have a right to submit rebuttal matters. A Legal Assistance Attorney can help walk you through the process, explain the procedural steps involved, and assist in drafting your response.
