WARRIOR LEADERS

From your Family and MWR Director

“Serving Those Who Serve”

Warm Fall Greetings Area I! Time has flown by quickly, and as you look around you’ll soon see changes outdoors as we transition into the fall season. It only seemed like yesterday when the heat of summer was upon us, when we still had the Casey Elementary School and our CYSS child care program, and when friends were still with us; at least, until PCS season came around.

MG Theodore D. Martin Commander, 2nd Infantry Division

CSM Edward W. Mitchell Command Sergeant Major, 2nd Infantry Division

Such is change, but even now as the nights get cooler and the leaves start to turn, one thing that will never change is Area I FMWR’s commitment to continue providing quality products and services our community have come to expect. So get ready for another fun month, and check out what we’ve prepared for you!

Jammie G. Hawkins

COL Brandon D. Newton Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

Steven J. Ryan Deputy Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

CSM Michael L. Berry Command Sergeant Major, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

Director, Family and MWR

If you had a blast at the last Nelly Concert, then prepare to be entertained at the Dead Daisies, Rock Concert on October 30 at Camp Casey, Hanson Field House. Admission is free, with food and beverage available onsite. If you think our Outdoor Recreation Team rests just because it gets cold…you’re wrong, and here’s what they’ve planned this month: October 8-9: Overnight River Rafting Adventure at Danyang River

Jammie G. Hawkins Family and MWR Director,

October 15 – Fall Colors Hike in Gamak Mountain

USAG Red Cloud and Area I

October 22 – Sinam Lake, Freshwater Fishing Trip

LTC Jon R. Gardner Commander, USAG Casey

Gregory B. Kirkland Deputy Commander, USAG Casey

CSM Pedro Guevara Jr. Command Sergeant Major, USAG Casey

Oh, by the way, IT’S HALLOWEEN! This month starts with an Area I BOSS 3K Zombie Run at Camp Stanley on October 1, followed by a Gateway Club Trunk or Treat and Costume Party on October 28, and not to be missed….the Area I BOSS Haunted Tunnel and After Party at Camp Stanley on October 29. We’ve got ghosts and ghouls galore waiting for you this month, so mark those calendars and join the party! We’ve got this and much more, peruse this month’s issue of In The Zone and see what we’ve got in store for you. My friends, I look forward to seeing you out and about!!!

Jeju Island Revisited Story & Photos by:

Terrie Elmer

After my trip to Jeju-do back in March with MWR, I could not wait to go back. Let me start by saying, no, I am not working for the Jeju Tourism bureau. I truly love the Island and all that it offers. This trip was centered more on my love of photography and Jeju offers amazing photo opportunities. No tour guides this time around, although for first timers to the island I would strongly suggest using a tour guide so you get the complete history and feel for what the Island is all about. This time out, it was just a friend and myself, a rental car and our cameras. Summertime in Jeju has a different feel than when we went in Spring. The water has a much stronger draw, beckoning you in away from the heat and humidity. The beaches were full of families and couples, playing in the cool ocean water. The vendors lined the beach with floats, souvenirs and snacks for sale. There was a sea of umbrellas shading people from the hot summer sun.

24

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

After leaving the beach, we headed to Hallim Park. In March it was fragrant with the smell of magnolias and tangerines, but this time it was the beauty of the Lotus flowers and water lilies that we were searching out. The vivid purples, pinks and creams of these amazing flowers made for beautiful photos. The water lilies on the pond reminds one of a Monet painting. From Hallim Park, we jumped in the car and headed to the ultimate Jeju destination… Hello Kitty Island! Okay, so it may not be for everyone, but it is iconic. Who doesn’t love cute little anime characters? This was by all accounts a very girly part of our journey as it was for many as there were throngs of young girls and children. All enjoying everything that there was to offer in the museum like setting, the gift shop and the cafe’ with the incredibly adorable latte’s with cocoa images of Hello Kitty atop the froth.

Feature Article: The end of our evening took us back to Jeju City where we went to West Wharf Premium Sashimi Restaurants Street. This street is filled with restaurant after restaurant all vying for your business. The owners beckoning you in to try their seafood. We finally settled upon one and went inside to have our dinner. Not only did we have an amazing seafood stew, but we were dazzled with a spectacular sunset. The Ajumma waiting on us, opened the blinds just as the sun was setting and motioned us over to get some of the best sunset pictures we had during our trip. Day three of our trip had us up and getting ready at 4 a.m. so we could head towards Sunrise Peak to get shots of the Sunrise. By the time we actually headed out and were about half way to our destination the sun was already peaking out over the fields. We stopped on a small country road and although we didn’t get the shots from Sunrise Peak, these were some of the best Sunrise pictures I have gotten. The sky was awash in pure gold.

We headed back to Jeju City after Loveland and freshened up after being out in the hot sun, then we headed to dinner. This time we went to Jeju Black Pork street. Again, much like the seafood street, this street is filled with restaurants serving Jeju black pork. We again were beckoned inside by the owner of one of the restaurants and had the most delicious meal. An assortment of fresh pork grilled at our table, with numerous side dishes. We definitely did not walk away hungry. My second trip to Jeju was as amazing as the first and I truly hope that you find the time to enjoy Jeju Island while you are stationed here in Korea. Get out, explore and take advantage of learning the customs and culture of this beautiful land. Z For more information about upcoming Family & MWR Tours, visit Outdoor Recreation of your local Area I CAC

We continued on our way to Sunrise Peak and from there on to Seogwipo where we took in several museums including the Cinema Museum, Coco Eco Park, The Teddy Bear Museum, and Chocolateland. We ended our touring of the day with Loveland, which suffice to say led to a lot of giggling. Jesu Island was once the destination for honeymooners from mainland Korea and Loveland is basically a theme park that was started to enlighten the honeymooners on the more intimate aspects of relationships. I will leave that there and let you use your imagination. I will add that this is most definitely an adults only destination. IN THE ZONE

SGT HARRIS’ MISSION STATEMENT

BOSS

FOR THE BOSS PROGRAM

Think Pink “Like a BOSS”

5K RUN I am truly thankful and excited for the opportunity to serve as the Casey-Hovey President. BOSS is a multifaceted program that not only addresses recreation and leisure needs, but Quality of Life and Community Service. These are the three pillars that make this program at its core vital to mission readiness. My goal is keep it simple yet incorporate and inspire Soldiers to step outside their comfort zone, have fun in the process and give back to the community. Personally, I don’t think there is a better place to accomplish this than the Korean Peninsula in Area 1. The cultural experiences here are endless. So I would implore all Soldiers who are able to participate in the BOSS program to take advantage of this unique opportunity.

corporation based in Washington State, specializing in the rescue of abused and neglected animals. This volunteer opportunity became very mission oriented as its primary purpose was to rehabilitate a stray Jindo suffering from many health issues, that was rescued from the streets of South Korea. SPC Larsen named her Spirit. This story takes a surprising turn during treatment when the rescue team discovered through X-ray that Spirit was pregnant. After Spirit gave birth, SPC Larsen took on the additional responsibility of caring for the pups as well as their mother. He took them for walks, bathed and groomed them, and helped facilitate their socialization. The mom and pups are close to full rehabilitation and will soon be on the way to the states for re-homing. In addition to rehabilitating Spirit and her pups, SPC Larsen facilitated adoption of other animals in the shelter by publicizing their stories and communicating with other organizations, while creating partnerships on animal causes in the local community.

SPC TANNER J. LARSEN

Written by Amanda Johnson

SPC Tanner Larsen arrived in Camp Casey, South Korea in February of 2016. He took a couple of months to settle in, then got started volunteering by doing something he genuinely loves: working with animals. SPC Larsen’s interest and love of animals is evident throughout years of volunteering, which includes the time even before he joined the Army.

SPC Larsen’s volunteer career was a special experience, as it helped create a lifelong love of working with animals. His first volunteer experience involved working with a German Shepherd rescue organization where he learned how to train and work with the breed. After joining the Army and being stationed at Fort Hood, SPC Larsen volunteered with the Killeen Animal Shelter in Texas, where he provided basic care of animals and socialization training to dogs that lacked such skills, in order to facilitate their adoption. These volunteer experiences inspired SPC Larsen to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology, an academic goal which he is currently working on.

SPC Larsen volunteers because he believes that all animals have the ability to love and care for others. Helping animals revives his faith in humanity because he sees how many others people are willing to work with, and take care of animals that others have neglected. This experience has had life changing effects. SPC Larsen encourages everyone to get out there and make a difference: “if you see an animal in trouble, do something about it.” SPC Larsen’s time, dedication and commitment exemplifies the Army’s Volunteer Corps’ invaluable service to the community. For this, we are grateful, and say Thank You, SPC Tanner J Larsen, and Congratulations! You are in the Community Volunteer Spotlight for the month of October 2016.

Since being stationed in Area I, SPC Larsen began volunteering at SEn Rescue Sanctuary, a local, non-profit

Military & Family Life Counseling (MFLC) Program provides short-term, non-medical counseling support for a range of issues including: relationships, crisis intervention, stress management, grief, occupational and other individual and family issues. Psycho-educational presentations focused on issues common to the military family including: reunion/ reintegration, stress/coping, grief/loss and deployment are provided to commands, Family Readiness Groups (FRGs), Soldier Readiness Processing and other locations, as requested. Support for these issues empowers individuals during the problem-solving process, increases individual and family competency and resilience in coping with the challenges of military life and ensures that these issues do not detract from operational readiness. Non-medical counseling supports military families with a variety of common concerns that occur within the military lifestyle, including: • • • • • • •

Anger Anxiety Loss or grief Relocation adjustment concerns, including homesickness Separation Stress reactions to the deployment cycle Stress reactions to reintegration and the transition from warrior to civilian

The goal of a Military Family Life Consultant (MFLC) is to prevent Family distress by providing education and information on Family dynamics, parenting strategies, available support services, the effects of stress, and positive coping mechanisms. MFLCs provide anonymous and confidential assistance to Soldiers and their Families in problem solving issues resulting from deployment, reunions, reintegration, and/or other times of change. Consultants are licensed clinicians with a Masters Degree and at least five years of experience in social work, counseling, or a related clinical discipline. Consultants are trained on military specific topics regarding the deployment cycle and military culture. MFLCs also provide financial counseling which includes how to manage expenses, save appropriately, and how to budget wisely. The program has more than 250 consultants assisting the needs of active duty, National Guard and Reserve Component members and their Families with everyday issues.
