We have a lot of great action lined up for you this month, beginning with an awesome concert featuring “Platinum Award Winning” singing artist ‘NELLY and the St. Lunatics’ —right here in our very own back yard, at the Gateway Club parking lot! The concert ‘kicks off’ at 7:30 p.m. all the way until the ‘after party’ at the Jammie G. Hawkins Gateway Club. If you haven’t been to one of our ‘after Director, Family and MWR party’ events, you’re in for a treat: live entertainment, party atmosphere, raffle drawings and more. Please keep in mind that this is an 18 and over event; parents be reminded of this, if your children are accompanying you to the concert. We will have food and beverages available, and of course, a whole lot of fun!! Are you aware that Casey Library has moved from its old location by Gateway Club to the Casey Community Activity Center? That’s right—it features more space and all the same great services that you had before! Now you can go to the Community Activity Center and enjoy ‘One Stop Shopping’ with not only the Library, but Recreation Center amenities (pool, ping pong, video, etc.), BOSS office, Leisure Travel, Arts and Crafts, Framing Shop, Outdoor Recreation Office, Paintball coordination, free WiFi, computers, video games and even our very own music rooms with music equipment to check out!! Few Highlights for September: 2nd – Nelly and the St. Lunatics Concert 3rd – O vernight Surfing School – Labor Day 10k Run – 3-6 Labor Day Flag Football Tourney 11th – Mountain Climbing 18th – Adventure Seoul 24th – Deep Sea Fishing Trip – Sanjeong Lake & Herb Island Tour … And Heads up – in Concert for October, the “Dead Daisies!”

LTC Jon R. Gardner Commander, USAG Casey

Gregory B. Kirkland

Deputy Commander, USAG Casey

CSM Pedro Guevara Jr.

Command Sergeant Major, USAG Casey

On a last note – FMWR wants to recognize one of our very own, who is moving on to bigger and more responsibilities; Ms. Avelina Richardson, Gateway Club Manager. Ms. Richardson has been selected to become the Fort Meyer, Chief of Business Operations for that community. We thank her for all she has done during her time with Area I FMWR and wish her “God-speed” and best of luck at her new assignment! See you out and about!

THE SECOND TO NONE CHALLENGE USAG-RC CSM BERRY’S CHALLENGE TO ALL OF AREA 1 #22PUSHUPCHALLENGE

22 65 Story by: CPL Joshua D. McElroy Here’s a sobering statistic. On average, 22 of our brother’s and sister’s in arms take their own lives on a daily basis. That’s 22 U.S. military veteran suicides per day, or roughly one life gone every 65 minutes. The reason for these tragedies are known to many in the military….some of us may be experiencing the symptoms even now such as struggles with depression, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), survivor’s guilt, the flashbacks/nightmares, the anxiety and distress, the feeling of being alone throughout their ordeal. The environment Soldiers encounter upon arriving home from fighting, along with many other personal issues that they may be dealing with; all these can take a terrible toll on the mental and physical well-being of any military member, until that one fateful moment when a life is taken.

On average, 22 U.S. military veterans commit suicide every day, roughly one life gone every 65 minutes.

The #22Pushups Challenge was started by a Veteran Empowerment Group called Honor, Courage, Commitment (HCC), who initiated the 22KILL movement. Their number one goal at heart, to support and raise awareness of the mental health challenges within the veteran community. For those wondering how the name for the challenge came about, #22 comes from the average 22 veterans a day who take their lives. The pushup is a simple exercise we all know and understand within the military, and the challenge was meant to send a powerful message to our brothers and sisters in arms who may be struggling: “We are here, and we will support you.” CSM Michael L. Berry, the USAG Red Cloud CSM, came up with a modified version of the #22 Pushup Challenge called “The Second to None Challenge.” In his previous unit, they formed and participated in their own version of the challenge to raise awareness within their community. “This is a great way to change the tempo in which we do our physical fitness events. It allows us to incor-

porate both training and awareness of an important issue within the military and get physically active at the same time. Physical pain reminds you that you are alive, but mental pain tests your will to stay that way. Participating in The Second to None Challenge shows that we are here, we will support you, and we are committed,” said CSM Berry. CSM Berry observed the way soldiers in Area I train, and incorporated elements of different workout styles like CrossFit, functional fitness, weightlifting, cardio and other types of workouts, all brought into one event. “My goal is to get all of Area I to come out and participate, showing their support to the cause and to come together as a community. Post-traumatic stress and mental issues are not just a veteran issue; it’s a societal issue. This isn’t just a CRC event, everyone in Area I is welcome to come and participate and show support to their fellow Soldiers,” CSM Berry added. The Second to none Challenge is a way of showing that you care, to let people know they don’t have to suffer alone, and that it’s ok to ask for help. The training involved will be a great opportunity to learn more about the help and support services available to Soldiers. You will learn how to take better control of your resiliency, and about the many ways that you can help your battle buddies fight the demons they may face on a daily basis.

CSM Berry wants you to push yourself, give it your all and complete the challenge. Just like all great leaders, he will be there leading the way, challenging himself to complete the exercises, while challenging others to push themselves and keep on going. He said that he hasn’t trained as much as he would have liked to for this event, but he’s confident in getting in there to give it his all, and showing his commitment and support to our Soldiers and the community. SGT Christopher Molina the Camp Red Cloud BOSS president acknowledges the importance of this event as well. “The struggle to battle these issues is real, and this is a great way to get everyone together and inform them on the many great ways to get help. He wants to see Area 1 come together to support one another and to send a message that know that you are not alone, that help is there and support channels are available. And most of all, that we’re all here to help point you in the right direction,” SGT Molina sincerely added. The Camp Red Cloud “Second to None challenge” will be held at the CRC Gym on Saturday September 10th starting at 12 noon. Contact your Area I BOSS Representative and sign up today.

Starting off, you will be weighed and the same number will be used to determine how much weight is added to each event. The challenge is timed with 5 events. The first event is pullups, with 22 reps pulling yourself up so that your chin breaks the plain of the bar. The second event will be 22 reps on a bench-press, the weight will be determined by how much you weigh. The third event will be 22 reps of squats with your body weight, the fourth event will be 22 deadlifts of your body weight, and finally the fifth event is 22 clings with 65% of your body weight. This is going to be a high intensity training event that encompasses many different styles within the fitness community. There’s going to be a lot of huffing and puffing and thoughts of wanting to quit, but you must resist and push through. The purpose of this training is to show you that things get rough, it’s a part of life, but you have to continue to push yourself to get to that finish line, to keep trying even when quitting seems easier. It’s not expected of you to complete all 5 events, but the goal is to push yourself even when it seems like you have no more to give. IN THE ZONE

COMMUNITY OLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Since volunteering in March, PV2 Munroe has accumulated over 600 volunteer hours! This is a significant amount of hours, and it takes dedication; something PV2 Munroe does very well since she volunteers every day! She has been a key volunteer at several community enhancing events such as the SHARP run in April, the USO Warrior Rush in May, Mother’s and Father’s Day cookouts, Independence Day celebration activities, numerous Ville Clean-Ups and pool events. One of her notable achievement as a BOSS representative includes recruiting others; in total, 25 other Soldiers who have volunteered their time in several programs throughout the Area community. PV2 Munroe has accumulated enough volunteer hours to apply for the Military Organization Volunteer Service Medal (MOVSM), and will also be submitted for consideration as the recipient of the Presidential Volunteer Service Medal through the Installation Army Volunteer Corps.

PV2 CAMISHA MUNROE PV2 Camisha Munroe is at her first duty station of her military career and is making the most of it. PV2 Munroe arrived in Area I in February 2016 and started volunteering for the community in March the following month. Her enthusiasm and initiative as an Written by Army volunteer is worthy of recognition. Amanda Johnson Before arriving in Korea, PV2 Munroe knew that she wanted to volunteer with the Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers (BOSS) program wherever she was assigned and that’s exactly what she did!

PV2 Munroe gets her inspiration for volunteering from the many ways she assists others just by donating her time and abilities. She says the feeling she gets from helping others is priceless. The experience of helping others is meaningful, fulfilling, joyous and personally satisfying for this Soldier. The community thanks PV2 Munroe for the volunteer hours she has put in to help others in the Area I community. Her volunteerism is greatly appreciated!

PV2 Munroe considers it an honor to be appointed as the BOSS representative for her unit. She understands the importance of supporting her unit’s mission, but always finds time to assist other Soldiers, her BOSS team, and especially those from her unit at Camp Casey. PV2 Munroe can be seen at almost every BOSS event—if she is in-country, she is there! One key role for PV2 Munroe is at the Camp Casey

Replace Smoke Alarm

Fire Prevention Week Age matters when it comes to your smoke alarms. Oct. 9-15, 2016 Check the manufacture dates on your smoke alarms today!

1

October 6, 2016

Remove the smoke alarm from the wall or ceiling.

3

Smoke alarms should be replaced 10 years from the date of manufacture.

2

Look at the back of the alarm for the date of manufacture.

4

Put the alarm back on the ceiling or wall if it is less than 10 years old.

years

A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.

Test smoke alarms at least once a month by pushing the test button.

Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room and outside each separate sleeping area. For the best protection, make sure all smoke alarms are interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.

If the smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside. Go to your outside meeting place. Call the fire department from a cellphone or a neighbor’s phone. Stay outside until the fire department says it’s safe to go back inside.
