Eccedentesiast You came out of the blue. You caught me off guard. What are you? Why are you here? Where do you come from? I want to ask, but she jumps into my life without my consent. At first, it is fine. I tell myself I am just going through the motions… But later…She is like hair on a bar soap…she doesn’t seem like she’s going to leave soon.

No, I won’t talk about it. I refuse to be a burden to them. I lie to myself that I will be fine.

I am a mess But no one will notice as long as I hide it well; I think I’m good at that.

Maybe the best choice is to just get rid of myself. I won’t ever have to deal with this hole getting bigger every day. I want to end it.

As long as I smile bigger than normal, As long as I laugh louder than necessary….. But inside my heart, there is a hole, a hole that is leaking all my positivity, my sanity, my emotions, It is hallow, dark, and consuming. There is nothing there, it is just empty. I try to cover the hole with smoke, with alcohol, with food; Smoke will hide it, alcohol will help me forget, food will keep me “full”… Surely, those will stop from leaking. But they were all temporary; The smoke vanished, I sobered up, and I became hungry again. Nothing fulfilled my empty hole completely.

But at the same time Is there anyone who cares? Is there anyone who recognize that I am on a never-ending swing? This swing has gotten me nauseous, it has gotten me wanting to give up on life.

I will give myself one and only chance. She sits and listens to me. She doesn’t try to lecture me or change me. She gives me a change to change myself. I tell her my problems, my insecurities….Then it becomes a confession, a declaration that I will not Let my emotions take over my life. Depression kills, it is a monster that creeps into your life and will not leave you alone. Be aware of your surroundings

Steering Wheel for Stars A spider strung a web in my room between bookshelf and potted philodendron. Silver strands and spirals, with tensile strength of steel, hung with lightness of a watermark in air. I never saw her move from the center of her silk castle --- never witnessed the small deaths --- but when I came home, dry insects dotted the web like planets.

I found her dead one morning--on the floor, legs curled. Burial in the soil of the patient philodendron which, months ago, answered yes when the spider’s gray voice asked--May I attach threads to your coppery red leaves so that I might weave a web beautiful as a steering wheel for stars?

As if you’ve never been away I walk the ground beneath my feet and realize that the mud stuck in my boots is foreign and strange, along the power lines you see the rising sun while the winter chill disrespecting as it blows.

Every day I hear the water stream right below the bridge its soothing to hear it once the day is over but to be honest with you sometimes it seems that days never end I am sure I am not the only one thinking the same.

You see the man in uniform walking alongside, the stars and stripes flag on the right and their heart on their sleeve. They all dream of their loved ones as if they were right next to them when in reality they are half a world away sending all their love and good vibes across the pacific wind

Wanting to be home by June to see my sister walk the stage to graduation but she knows how much I love her I know she’ll wait for me with great hopes and expectations.

Have your mind at ease but be ready for anything. I could hear you murmuring ‘Home tomorrow, battle born today” up here you can feel the frozen tension of bygone conflict but you can also feel the sonic bloom of spring ready to hit the peninsula any time now. I hope that when you return home nothing changes, you should be the kind hearted men with that unbreakable will that all this time you knew you were. Maybe you will find some of your friends and family changed but that’s okay it’s supposed to be that way if it wasn’t you would still be back home but for the moment I can’t go back now sometimes you’ve got to rock the cradle on your own

Next time I part ways with you don’t worry I’ll be fine if I know one thing for sure is how to be present in such absent times just look at the polaroid circa 2009 we were only kids at the time. When I come home, when this is thru please let me rest right beside you I have so much to tell you. I know you won’t believe the things I’ve done for home and country. I’ve yet to hear the birds singing at the dawn chorus, the blue hour once again tells me it’s almost time for first formation brush my teeth and comb my hair on my way, no hesitations. Before you know it I will be back again you will realize that in fact I’ve never left, you will feel my presence everyday as if I’ve never been away.

In Times Like These In times like these What do you do? How do you feel at ease? Do you look to the sky And wonder how you’ll get by? Or do you look down With nothing but a frown?

In time like these What do we do? How do we feel at ease? Do we stand together Like two birds of a feather? Or do we go at each other’s throat Till there’s no more hope?

In times like these What do I do? How do I feel at ease? Do I kneel down and pray And wait for light to guide my way? Or do I make friends with misery Till I’m blue with injury?

In time like these.
