WARRIOR LEADERS “Serving Those Who Serve”

From your Family and MWR Director ♬~ Hello USAG Red Cloud and Area I

Community Members.

MG Scott McKean

Can you believe it…? We're already hitting

Commander, 2nd Infantry Division

the Christmas and New Year’s Eve Season!!!

CSM Phil K. Barretto

It’s a great time of the year to spend

Command Sergeant Major,

with family and celebrate together;

2nd Infantry Division

unfortunately, it’s not the case with many of our unaccompanied Military and Civilian members here at Area I. As much

COL Brandon D. Newton

as it is a glorious time of the year, it can also be a very difficult time of

Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

the year for many spending it alone, and for many, spending it alone for

Steven J. Ryan

during this time of the year. Please be extra vigilant and watch for lonely

Deputy Commander, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

the first time. The Army is a big family and we look out for each other and/or depressed symptoms from our Battle Buddies. Reach out to them, invite them to your home, get them involved with FMWR events, or our ACS support team. More importantly, be there for them and

Jammie G. Hawkins Family and MWR Director, USAG Red Cloud and Area I

remind them that we/you are their extended family away from family at home!!! With that said, FMWR has a lot in store for you during the month of December… SO PLEASE peruse the “Zone” and get the latest and

LTC Brian A. Jacobs

greatest with “What’s Happening in Area I!” Lots of Christmas Specials

Commander, USAG Casey

and of course our New Year’s “kick it into 2018” celebrations!!

Gregory B. Kirkland

I wish you a very Merry Christmas and an awesome New Year 2018…

Deputy Commander, USAG Casey

see you out and about. Don’t forget about these events: 1 December

CSM Jason R. Copeland

Recreation is having a Reopening at its new location inside Casey CAC.

Command Sergeant Major, USAG Casey

2017, 0600 the Reopening of Soldiers Field. Then at 1400, Outdoor Then on 8 December at 1800 come join us for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Gateway Parking Lot . In The Zone has all the details and much more.

Tokyo National Museum Tokyo National Museum (TNM) began in 1872 with an exposition held at the Yushima Seido Confucian shrine in Tokyo. It has the longest history among all museums in Japan. TNM collects, preserves, restores and displays art, archaeological objects and other cultural properties from Japan and across Asia. The museum also conducts research into these properties and promotes understanding of them through educational activities. The TNM collection comprises around 114,000 items, including 87 National Treasures and 633 Important Cultural Properties (as of March 2014). It is the best collection of cultural properties in Japan in terms of both quality and number. The Regular Exhibition galleries exhibit about 4,000 of these works at any given time.

The oldest temple in Tokyo: Senso-ji Temple Sensoji Temple is the main spot of sightseeing in Asakusa. It is the oldest temple in Tokyo, founded in 628. Every year about 30 million people visit it from inside and outside of Japan. In each season, various events continuing from ancient times are held. It is a great spot for enjoying the atmosphere of the Edo period.

Tokyo River Cruise CAMP CASEY

Have always wanted to take a trip on one of the boats that cruise along the rivers of Tokyo - especially the Himiko which has to be one of the coolest looking boats I've clapped my mince pies on - possibly the closest one will get to take a ride on a space cruiser.

Tokyo Tower The 333-meter symbol of Tokyo. Completed in 1958, Tokyo Tower has two observatories, the main observatory at 150 meters and the special observatory at 250 meters, offering views of Mt. Fuji, Mt. Tsukuba and of the Tokyo metropolis. It also has several amusement spots including an aquarium and restaurants. Live concerts on Wednesday and Thursday nights are offered in the observatory and nighttime illuminations attract many visitors. Tokyo Tower is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.

What can JAG Do for You? Servicemembers Civil Relief Act (SCRA) The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act 50 U.S.C. §3902 (SCRA) extends certain protections, including temporary suspension of judicial and administrative proceedings, to servicemembers of the United States to enable them to devote their entire energy to the dense of the Nation. This article outlines some, but not all, of the most important protections provided for in the SCRA. 1. 6% Interest Rate Cap An obligation or liability incurred by a servicemember, or a servicemember and their spouse jointly, prior to entering military service shall not bear an interest rate in excess of 6 percent. This protection includes student loan debt. In order to trigger the interest rate limitation, the servicemember must provide the creditor with written notice and a copy of their orders. In certain circumstances, creditors may request relief from the limitations of the interest rate cap if they can prove that the ability of the servicemember to pay an increased interest rate is not materially affected by the servicemember’s military service. 2. Stay of Proceedings The SCRA also provides for the temporary suspension of judicial and administrative proceedings. In the advent that a servicemember stationed in Korea is involved in a civil action back in the United States, the servicemember may petition the court to stay the action for a minimum period of 90 days, and longer at the court’s discretion. A stay of proceedings does not terminate the case, but rather puts a hold on the proceedings. Most courts are inclined to grant a stay of proceedings until after the servicemembers’ Date of Earliest Return from Overseas Service (DEROS). If the court denies the request, the court must appoint an attorney to represent the servicemember in their absence. This protection does not apply to criminal proceedings, and is not automatic. To take advantage of the protection, the servicemember must provide two memorandums, including one from their commander, stating that the servicemember is unable to return due to mission requirements.

34

USAG Red Cloud and Area I Family and MWR Magazine

CAMP CASEY

3. Protections against Default Judgements A default judgement is a final, binding action taken by a court if one party fails to take action or respond to a summons. A court will reopen any default judgement entered against a servicemember if it can be shown that the servicemember was materially affected by reason of military service in making a response and there is a legitimate defense to the action. An application for reopening a default judgment must be made while the servicemember is still on active duty, or within 90 days after the date of termination of or release from military service. 4. Termination of Residential Leases and Telephone Service Contracts The ability to break lease agreements and phone contracts is especially important for members of rotational units who may have received orders to Korea on short notice. In order to terminate covered contracts under this section, the orders to relocate must be for a period of not less than 90 days. Further, the servicemember must provide written notice of intent to terminate to the landlord or service provider, along with a copy of the orders. In most circumstances, termination will be effective 30 days after the next payment deadline. In the case of cell phone numbers, servicemembers may retain their U.S. number for up to three years. 5. Evictions In general, a landlord may not evict a servicemember, or the dependents of a servicemember, during the period of military service, except by court order. This protection only applies if the premises were primarily used as a residence and the monthly rent is less than $3,451.20 (this number increases every year for inflation). Additionally, a court may stay any eviction proceedings for a period of 90 days, or longer if equity requires, if the Servicemember can show that their military service has materially affected their ability to pay.

Eligible purchase transactions do not include, and rewards are not earned for, the following transactions: cash advances, convenience checks, balance transfers, or fees of any kind, including finance charges, late fees, returned check fees, ATM cash advance fees, and annual fees, if any. Navy Federal cash equivalent transactions, such as the purchase, loading or re-loading of Navy Federal gift and prepaid cards (e.g., Navy Federal gift cards, Visa® Buxx Cards, GO Prepaid Cards), are also not eligible purchase transactions and do not earn rewards. 3Currently, rates range from 10.65% APR to 18% APR, are based on creditworthiness, and will vary with the market based on the U.S. Prime Rate. ATM cash advance fees: None if performed at a Navy Federal branch or ATM. Otherwise, $0.50 per domestic transaction or $1.00 per overseas transaction.
