This is the last MWR Magazine Article that I write to all of you. I have been chosen to become part of the Sustainment Region Family and MWR Team, located at Redstone Arsenal in Alabama. It’s been a ‘Great’ six years with this MWR Team and community. We accomplished much, such as the renovation of most of our MWR facilities, added new and needed programs, while doing away with unwanted programs and services. We reinvested back into all our facilities and team members to provide you with the optimum support, assistance, programs and services. We transformed USAG Red Cloud over to USAG Yongsan-Casey, when the colors for Red Cloud were cased. We closed Camp Jackson and Stanley. We adopted new locations such as the JSA, Rod Range and Warrior Base; enhancing their quality of life, health and resiliency. We won many awards, such as best BOSS program in Pacific for 4 years running, we also won the best Army Community Activity Center (Camp Red Cloud) and our Clubs, Golf Courses and other programs also won many ‘Stars & Stripes’ Awards. I can go on about everything that has been accomplished in our community, however, that is way too much to write about. I’ve worked with the very best Team Members that any Leader could ask for. I’ve worked with the best Senior Leaders at DPW, DES, DPTMS, HR, RM, USO, Red Cross, Military Units, AAFES, DeCA, Community Bank, Cities of Dongducheon and Uijeonbu, as well as many local partner companies that supported our community. As I reflect on the last six years, I do so with a big smile and warm feeling; and understand how fortunate I was to lead such a great team and work with such a great community. I also understand how lucky I was to be part of US Army Korea History- with the closure of many of the ‘Most-Northern’ located Camps and casing the colors of one of IMCOM’s largest Garrisons in Pacific Region; and lastly, while in South Korea, I was also part of the challenges that the North and South Koreas face as they move closer together towards (hopeful) reunification…. Yep, I’ve been very lucky. As I turn over responsibility of Area 1 MWR to Mr. Jeff Wertz and team, it’s with ‘Bitter/Sweet’ emotions that I thank all of you for your support and bid you farewell. “그동안 모든 지원에 감사 드리며 작별 인사드립니다…” Jammie… “Signing Off.”
Jammie G. Hawkins Director, USAG Red Cloud and Area 1 (formerly)

CAMP CAMP CASEY CASEY
The War Memorial of Korea, located in Yongsan-gu, Seoul, exhibits and preserve materials related to the Korean War and serves as a national moral educational venue. It was established to commemorate the noble sacrifice of patriotic martyrs by the War Memorial Service Korea Society on June 10, 1994. The museum houses approximately 33,000 artifacts with about 10,000 on display at an indoor and outside exhibition halls. There are six separate indoor halls, including Expeditionary Forces Room, Patriotic Memorial Room, War History Room, 6·25 Korean War Room, Development Hall and Large Machinery Room. The outdoor exhibition hall showcases large-sized weapons. Visitors of all ages from children to adults can also participate in 20 various educational programs and diverse cultural events such as military music and honor guard events, drawing contest, cultural event and more. The character of War Memorial of Korea is ‘Mudori’ featuring a helmet symbolizing the protection of the nation and a bay leaf meaning peace.
ITAEWON SHOPPING This area is located conveniently outside Gate 12 (by the gas station) and across the street. Itaewon Street is the most exotic place in Seoul to spend a day of shopping, dining, and hanging out. Itaewon holds a long history in its making and is the first place most tourists want to visit in Korea. After the U.S. set up a military base in Korea during the 1970s, many foreigners stationed at the base settled near the Itaewon area, naturally developing the region into a shopping district catering to foreigners. Later, the existence of Itaewon became known worldwide after the widely publicized 1986 Asian Games and the 1988 Seoul Olympics. In 1997, Itaewon was finally designated as an official tourist zone. Please bring Korean Won for souvenir and lunch or snacks.

Jeonju Hanok Village
THURSDAY, 22 NOVEMBER CAMP CASEY
Fee: $35 for Transportation Fees
• Deadline for Sign-up: 19 November • Requires a minimum of 20 participants
Story of Hanok Village- Jeonju Hanok Village is located in the city of Jeonju and overlaps Pungnam-dong and Gyo-dong. There are over 800 traditional Korean hanok houses. While the rest of city has been industrialized, Hanok Village retains its historical charms and traditions. Jeonju Hanok Village is especially beautiful for its unique roof edges, which are slightly raised to the sky. Hanok houses are generally divided into two sections, Anchae and Sarangchae. Sarangchae is where the men dwell, and is referred to as the Seonbi room. Because men and women had to remain separate, Anchae is situated deep inside the house so that it is secretive and quiet. Another trait of Hanok is that all the houses are heated with ondol, a unique sub-floor heating system. Since Koreans enjoy sitting, eating, and sleeping on the floor, it needs to remain heated. A part of Hanok has been set aside so that tourists can experience traditional Korean life, called Hanok Life Experience Hall. You can enter the rooms to experience the warm floor first-hand. An advantage of this system is that it is warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The food provided is very traditional, which adds to the traditional ambience. At Jeonju Hanok Village, visitors can enjoy traditional Korean life and traditional foods like bibimbap, the most well-known dish from the Jeonju region. What to Expect - A themed hanbok is more colorful and fancy pattern style, including king's and queen’s hanboks, while the traditional hanbok is a graceful and a pleasantly simple hanbok. Still commonly worn in South Korea during traditional festivals, traditional Handbooks feature comparatively simple designs and give off an elegant feeling. Themed hanboks, which are made of materials with bright colors and patterns, are most popular with customers at hanbok-Nam. On top of that, you can also choose from a line of hanboks that were traditionally worn in the ancient times by kings, Korean geishas, warriors, scholars and so on. These hanboks can easily be seen in Korean historical drama series. Please bring Korean Won for Souvenir and lunch or Snacks.

GET THE FLU SHOT TODAY AND KEEP THE VIRUSES AWAY
CAMP CASEY
Camp Casey Clinic and Combined Troop Aid Stations (CTAS) will be offering flu shots free of charge to all Tricare beneficiaries & DOD Civilians. All Garrison units will coordinate with Camp Casey Clinic in order to schedule mass vaccination. Mass vaccination of units will occur at either Hanson Field House or Carey Gym. Community Flu events will take place 1-2 Nov 2018 0900-1400, and 8 Nov 2018 1200-1630. The time that you all have been anticipating and/or dreading has finally arrived. It is time to get your flu shots. Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. According to the Centers for Disease Control, experts think that this virus is spread from droplets made when individuals with the flu cough, sneeze, or talk. Yes! Talking to someone with the flu places you at a high risk for contracting the virus. It can also be contracted by touching a surface that the flu virus is on and touching your own eyes, mouth, or nose. Most people are contagious beginning one day before feeling sick and up to 5-7 days after developing symptoms. There are even a select few who become infected with the virus and never display symptoms, but are just as contagious as anyone else who is actively experiencing symptoms. Just because the flu was contracted from someone who has no symptoms does not mean that you will have the same outcome. According to the Centers for Disease control, between 4,000 and 50,000 people die each year from the flu. It is also estimated that the flu virus has caused between 9.2 million and 35.6 million U.S. illnesses each year since 2010. The most effective way to prevent the flu is to get the flu shot. This vaccine is recommended for those 6 months and older. Children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions, and people 65 years and older are at the highest risk for complications related to the flu. When healthy people get vaccinated it protects those who are most vulnerable to the illness. It is a popular belief that individuals contract “the flu” from receiving the vaccine, but possible side effects after having any shot are soreness in the arm, redness at the injection site, body aches, fever, cough, runny nose, or sore throat. The symptoms listed are often mistaken for a mild case of the flu but it is actually an immune response to a foreign substance entering the body and will generally last 1-2 days after the shot. In the end, the benefits of getting the flu vaccine outweigh the side effects. Remember “Get the flu shot today and keep the viruses away!” Vaccine information sheets will be available to you when receiving the flu shot, but for additional information on other prevention methods, types of flu vaccines and viruses, and any other concerns, please talk to your healthcare provider or visit the Centers for Disease Control’s flu website at https://cdc.gov/flu.
