OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions

A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in nonhandicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, the latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the Handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

Welcome to Chepstow Racecourse for a fund raising race day for Brain Tumour Research in memory of Gwilym Llewellyn who passed away in March 2021 at the age of 51. Gwilym was the eldest son of popular Welsh racehorse trainer Bernard Llewellyn.

Gwilym was an avid cyclist and loved everything about it especially his love of pink cycling accessories. In remembrance of Gwilym today, many guests at today’s charity lunch will be wearing pink. I would to thank everyone who has supported today’s lunch as well as the race sponsors.

Welcome too to BresBet, the online bookmaker who sponsor their first e ver r ace a t Chepstow today.

Today is the first race day for Chepstow’s new General Manager Lindsay Knox, who has spent her career in leisure management and now takes her first role in horse racing. I am sure many of our customers will meet her in the coming months.

Sean Bowen was Jump Jockey of the Year at last year’s awards and his career continues to go from strength to strength. He currently leads the Jump Jockeys’ Championship with 23 winners – it is obviously early days but we wish him the best of luck against the challenge of Brian Hughes and Harry Cobden.

We have an exceptionally busy summer ahead here at Chepstow Racecourse.

On Ladies Evening on Friday 14th July the post racing entertainment is supplied by The Dreamboys. The ever popular Caribbean Race Night is on Friday 28th July. For both of these fixtures, we are offering significant discounts for group bookings, please see the website for details.

We also host our first Racing League fixture on Thursday 10th August. In addition, we have three major concerts at the start of July with Lionel Richie, Lewis Capaldi and George Ezra – ticket details are available from Ticketmaster

I hope you have an enjoyable afternoon with us and I look forward to welcoming you back on another occasion. If you are interested in taking hospitality at any of our fixtures, please email Jodi Boreham (jboreham@chepstow-racecourse.co.uk).

CHEPSTOW RACECOURSE is part of Arena Racing Company which includes; Bath, Brighton, Doncaster, Ffos Las, Fontwell Park, Great Yarmouth, Hereford, Lingfield Park, Newcastle, Royal Windsor, Sedgefield, Southwell, Uttoxeter, Wolverhampton and Worcester racecourses

LONGEST TRAVELLERS: LORDSHIP trained by W Haggas, MOUNTAIN LAKE trained by S bin Suroor, ALA KAIFI trained by Ismail Mohammed & SWIFT HAWK trained by W Knight, - all Newmarket, 164 miles.

LORDSHIP is going the right way and a repeat of the form he showed in handicap company at Haydock last time could be enough to see him get off the mark here. Swift Hawk is the obvious danger on the back of his Leicester near miss, although Mountain Lake did go off a short price on debut and it would be no surprise were she to prove a different proposition over this much longer trip

Neil Michael Phillips

(2.07.1978 - 26.04.2023)

Tragically, on the 26th April this year, at the age of just 44, Neil lost a brave but short battle with a rare brain cancer.

Neil was born and brought up in the slate capital of the world, Blaenau Ffestiniog. He enjoyed an early part of his working life as a carpenter in the big city of Cardiff, but returned to his heartland Blaenau, to build the family business of Grey Slate and Stone Ltd and Darlun Kitchens & Bathrooms, working side by side with his father Mike.

Neil was a wonderful and amazing husband to Morwenna, a loving and caring father of Lliwen (14) and Enlli (11) and a much loved son of Mike and the late Dorothy.

Neil was a keen mountain walker and frequently walked with friends & family in the scenic mountains of Snowdonia National Park, with Tryfan being his favourite and much walked peak. The welsh slate trophy for today’s race in memory of Neil, has been hand-crafted by the team at Grey Slate and Stone Ltd in loving memory of Neil, a truly fitting tribute.

Neil’s brother Tim is a lifelong friend of the Llewellyn family, who organise this fundraising event for Brain Tumour Research in memory of Gwilym Llewellyn, who was also taken far too soon by this cruel disease in 2021.

The Phillips family would like to thank the Llewellyn family for allowing them to be part of this special day. The family hope that this race will allow them to remember such a wonderful, loving family man, a great friend and a sorely missed member of Blaenau Ffestiniog’s close-knit community.

Thank you. The Phillips family.

MILLICENT isn’t the most consistent but she signalled a clear return to form despite operating from out of the weights when third at Nottingham 12 days ago and, now from her correct mark, could be worth chancing to back that up now. Veteran Kenstone is also interesting back from a break with his yard in good order, whilst the John O’Shea trained-pair Letter of The Law and Romanovich could also play a part.
