Happy New Year! Yes, it has begun: our ‘new-est’ Ol’ New Year. January is here, again. The calendar’s cycle is re-new-ed. New beginnings are, now, beginning a-new. A bit monotonous with the ‘new’…?...perhaps. Life is, re-petitively, full of re-peated re-petitions, isn’t it!!! …isn’t it? …like: / Breathing-in & breathing-out / Sleeping & awakening / Eating & …well…you know. Among the many re-cycled traditions, to re-turn this winter; will, certainly, be the echo of: new year’s re-solutions. I can hardly conceive a better re-solution, than: global non-violence. That achievement would be truly ‘new’ …it would be a ‘first’ in recorded history. And, in future years; it would become the most ‘welcomed’ (monotonous) re-petition. So, then, let us all agree to: Inhale & exhale …Work & rest …Eat & poop, for the most worthwhile things …right?... such as, ‘the end of human-imposed bloodshed.’ For me …as long as my heart beats ‘n’ re-peats; I will ‘rise & shine’ for all the animals’ beating-hearts. While I will ‘rise and shine,’ the popular saying, “Appearances can be deceiving,” does come to mind. For example: our sun appears to rise, in all the morning skies –again and again, we see it and say it, “The sun is up.” The sun’s light --its colors and warmth-- are undeniable satisfactions: ‘Sunrise and sunset’ are among our most beloved …re-petitions. However, let us all agree that the sun’s ‘coming up and going down’ …are deniable (by inner reasoning; by Galileo’s telescope; by astronauts; etc.). The sun does not …rise, the sun does not …set, -these, phenomena, are illusions (explained by the spherical-earth’s rotation around its axis, while it revolves around the sun). But, --to a glance of the merely, physical-eye-- the sun does, appear to, daily, ‘cross our sky’ (as a boat crosses a river). And, that is OK …let it be joyous. Why…?... …because, we all appreciate the charmingly-practical-convenience of expressing nature, by its beauteous appearances (as in: Sunflowers; Bluebirds; Seahorses; Sun-up & sun-down; etc.). There is no harm, in harm-less ‘wrongs.’ Harm-less wrongs, have charm …not harm: It is ‘sweet’ to say, “You are a fragrant flower,” (though you are, actually, a human). The harm, is in the harm-ful wrongs. Harm-ful wrongs, have harm …not charm. And, that is not OK. How charming is it, to say, “I am going to eat you today; and, tomorrow I will excrete you, as dump, out of my rump.”…? Some ‘appearances’ (attitudes) should be questioned, challenged, and turned from wrong to right. Yet, it seems to be the destiny of many people, to be caught in the overwhelming flood of our society’s mainstream enjoyments; they don’t want to be bothered, with thinking beyond their own temporal happiness. Is that right …is that good?! Is it right-n-good --to not question-- an ‘appearance’ that involves an animal’s bleeding (human or otherwise)? Did ‘biology’ slither out of the mud, and climb the ladder-of-life: from aquatic-plant to land-plant …from aquatic-animal to land animal …and now… to the moon-going human-animal --only to have humanity look behind itself, at the lower rungs of the ladder, and ‘eat our foundation out from under us’ …and fall back into …what?!... mere flesh & blood?...which eats flesh & blood?! …what about the spirit??? We need not be puritanical, regarding: do & don’t. All we need is, simply, to care enough: that we will --think-- deeply & well, about the important things (wouldn’t that be enough?). Creating important-changes, is often challenging …that is, difficult (i.e., we may find ourselves suffering through those changes); but, if we end “human-imposed death to animals” …how, then, will humans treat other humans? ...non-violently …in echo? Will not global-humanity, then, have awakened to a peace, that has been yearned for, throughout all our known history? Whether we suffer, or whether we don’t, we will know in our hearts: that we did ‘rise and shine’ for what is right; that we did save humanity from itself. How satisfying… …how beautiful …to bequeath to humanity, such a truly charmed heritage. Our ‘global vegan cause’ is gaining momentum, like a spark, bursting into a bright flame. There is strength in numbers (of vegan-sparks). Please continue on this road, with me and others across the world. One day, all will share this planet, in peace and harmony - I know it: this is my belief …that is the ‘new’ year …for which I rise-n-shine. Livegan, Nancy & Arwen

Global Climate Change is a really hot topic, nowadays. It is a real threat. No matter who tries to disclaim it; we witness its effects every day, all around the world. Saying, “Global Climate Change is not real,” is an empty ‘denial’ of the harmful-consequences that are clearly making their mark on our world. Scientific evidence for warming of the climate system is unequivocal. - Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Here are some signs of Global climate change: Sea level rise; Global temperature rise; Warming oceans; Shrinking ice sheets; Declining Arctic sea ice; Glacier retreat; Extreme weather events; Ocean acidification; Decreased snow cover; and more. Now that we have this problem facing all of us on the planet, it is time to take action and endeavor to assist and heal our earth. A very significant way to do that is by ceasing ‘Animal Agriculture.’ Here are some statistics from the Cowspiracy website: . . . - GREENHOUSE GASES Transportation exhaust is responsible for 13% of all greenhouse gas emissions. When I first met my wife, she came with a rabbit! I was more than adamant about allowing a “farm animal” in to our home, but it was only one little rabbit and I was going to let it stand in the way of our future together. Besides, I figured, the rabbit will die soon and then we’ll have the place all to ourselves. Looking back on it now, that was a selfish, morbid, and ignorant thought. The joke was on me, though, rabbits live to be about 10 years old and in that time I grew to love that little fur ball so much that she often watched TV in bed with us. When we lost her, I was heartbroken and the empty hay box in the family room that had first made me cringe with emotion was now an empty spot in my heart. Fast forward nearly 30 years and I can’t imagine our home without litter boxes of hay in strategic corners and rabbits jumping and cuddling with each other throughout the areas of the house we have made theirs. Yes, I said cuddling with each other. Rabbits are extremely social and intelligent animals that crave companionship of their own kind. They do best in bonded pairs, but wait; you can’t just throw any two rabbits together! They must first be spayed/neutered and then they go through a series of speed dates to see which two will be most compatible together. The introductions range from “love at first sight” to “I want to kill you” – you know – just like people. In fact the courtship mimics human dating more than I could have imagined and in the end there must always be a dominant bunny in the pair. Nine times out of ten, that is the female – you know – just like people. The process of bonding rabbits has become my passion and I have learned more about love observing bonded rabbits than I have from anything or anyone else in my life. They bond for life and care deeply for each other. It is our love of rabbits that has led us to help rescue them. Locally, our city shelter takes in about twenty to twenty five thousand animals a year. That number should shock you. It certainly shocked me. Rabbits are the third most abandoned animal next to dogs and cats and they are also one of the most misunderstood. Is a rabbit right for you? That depends a lot on your expectations. Rabbits are prey animals so they are easily frightened and hid illness well. You must know a lot about health care because not every vet will see rabbits. They all have different personalities that range from shy and timid to outgoing and mischievous! Best of all, though, they are vegan like you! Their food is all plant or fruit based and as a bonus their droppings in the hay box are compostable to help you grow more fresh veggies for them. They don’t make a lot of noise, but they can dig and chew, which is sometimes a result of boredom. That is another good reason to have a pair! Farm to Fable is the culmination of years of grappling with the question, why in an age when most of us could easily make other choices, do we continue to consume animals and believe we have a right to do so? I believe that the answer is two-fold. First, the beliefs about eating animals remain largely unexamined and therefore unchallenged. Second, the fictions of popular culture continually reinforce these beliefs. The book examines many of the most common fictions and dissects examples in our everyday lives. It also provides important insights for animal advocates which I believe can greatly empower our work. Carol Adams, the pioneering author of The Sexual Politics of Meat, wrote the preface for the book which is a great honor. Adams was one of a handful of authors and speakers who helped me evaluate our culture through a certain kind of critical lens that I think is so important. . Who is the audience for the book and what is your main message to them?
For the general public, the message is that the fictions of popular culture cannot continue to justify animal consumption on a rational, emotional, or ethical basis. Most of them are ancient, archaic fictions that were also used to justify “inferior” human groups which we have already abandoned or rejected because they are averse to our modern sensibilities. I urge my readers to examine their beliefs and assumptions honestly against these cultural fictions that underlie them. For animal advocates, I stress two important take-aways from a better understanding of the fictions of animal consumption that can empower our advocacy. The first is that there is an important connection between beliefs and behavior that is sorely overlooked in advocacy today and that I believe we must more fully explore and define so we may better understand the social and cultural landscape we are seeking to change. Most advocacy is focused on behavior change, as if behavior exists in a vacuum or as if veganism is merely a dietary choice. Neither of these are true. A classic example of this is Meatless Monday. The second is that truth matters. Truth is the basis for establishing trust, relationships, credibility and integrity with our audience. And truth-telling is all the more critical to causes which seek to expose injustices that are intentionally hidden by fictions and lies. Of all the fictions you discuss in the book, if you had to pick just one, which would you consider to be the most important and why? Consent is the foundation. Consent has us believing that animals are willing participants in whatever it is we want to do with them, that they willingly sacrifice themselves for some greater human purpose. We say that they give us their eggs, their secretions, their bodies and even their lives. Of course we know that animals are not only incapable of giving their consent; they clearly indicate their resistance to domination and will fight like hell to avoid pain and death. Once we believe in consent, then it’s just a matter of how we treat them. Use is off the table since it is assumed that they don’t mind being used. This is why humanewashing has emerged as such a prominent fictional device today.

We are: what we eat. Therefore, the first step in becoming more ‘health conscious’ is, often, to examine: what we eat (i.e., what we place on our tongues, and swallow into our stomachs). But, did you know that we ‘eat’ through our skin. Many products that we use in our homes, and externally on our skin –hair –nails –teeth -etc.; become metabolized by our bodies at the molecular and cellular levels, (i.e., we are topically ‘eating’ them). Are your beauty habits hurting the environment – and your health? From face scrubs to lipstick, personal care products and cosmetics are laced with dangerous ingredients that can cause pollution, kill plants and animals, and impact your health. ~ Green Spirit If your body lotion is laden with harmful chemicals then your skin soaks it inward. Likewise with toothpaste, shampoo, perfume, lotion, makeup, etc.; your skin, mouth, face soaks in the toxic chemicals. It is time we make the connection and rally for cruelty-free/animal-free products in every aspect of our lives. Look for vegan alternatives. Don’t you want the planet, the animals, and yourself to be toxin free? Here are a few of the cosmetic industry’s most damaging chemicals: •P-phenylenediamine is a dangerous chemical derived from coal tar. Found in lipsticks and hair dye Kills animal plankton and other aquatic species •BHA and BHT are synthetic antioxidants used as preservatives. Found in moisturizers and lipsticks Kills fish and shellfish Causes mutations in amphibians •Dioxane is an endocrine disruptive chemical that contaminates other ingredients. There are ways to remove this carcinogenic chemical, but companies typically avoid doing so due to cost (time / labor). Found in creamy products like shampoo and bubble bath Kills insects and animal plankton •Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) is a plasticizer used in nail polish and PVC pipe. Affects a variety of aquatic species Causes mutations in amphibians Alters fish behavior and reproductive cycle In large amounts, can decimate an entire ecosystem •Triclocan is an antibacterial chemical found in deodorant, hand-sanitizers, and laundry detergent. Alters biochemistry of amphibians, aquatic plants, and fish Causes mutations in amphibians Alters fish behavior and reproductive cycle In large amounts, can decimate an entire ecosystem •Diethanolamine (DEA) is a ph adjuster found in nearly every personal care product. Reacts with nitrates to create nitrosamines (which are highly carcinogenic to animals and humans) Toxic to fish, amphibians, and other aquatic life These substances are damaging to humans and the environment; but consider, also, the innocent animal victims, who are subjected to cruel testing procedures during: product research & manufacturing. Environment: The chemical components of many products do not efficiently decompose; instead, they accumulate in our ecosystems as toxic pollution. Cosmetic and personal-care products do most of their damage to the environment after they are washed down our sinks, because the chemicals are recycled into our lakes and streams. Cuisine: Vegan, Gluten Free Serves: 2-4 Ingredients BRUSSELS SPROUTS •16 ounces (453 g) Brussels Sprouts, halved •1-2 Tbsp (15-30 ml) olive oil •Pinch each sea salt + black pepper SAUCE + PASTA •3 Tbsp (45 ml) olive oil or vegan butter •4 large cloves garlic, chopped (~3 Tbsp) •1/3 (80 ml) cup dry white wine (Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, + Sauvignon Blanc, are best) •4 Tbsp (32 g) arrowroot starch (or cornstarch) •1 3/4 cup (420 ml) unsweetened plain almond milk •4 Tbsp (15 g) nutritional yeast •Sea salt + black pepper to taste •1/4 cup (20 g) vegan parmesan cheese, plus more for serving •10 ounces (283 g) vegan, gluten free pasta* (brown rice pastas are readily available - or this penne from Bionaturae) Instructions 1.Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (204 C) and add Brussels sprouts to a baking sheet. Drizzle with oil, and season generously with salt and pepper and toss. Arrange in a single layer and set aside. 2.Bring a large pot of water to a boil (for cooking the pasta) and salt generously (~1 Tbsp). Set aside while preparing sauce. 3.Heat a large rimmed skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add oil and garlic. Sauteé for 3 minutes or until fragrant and very slightly golden brown, then add wine (see photo). Be careful - it may flame, but only briefly. Stir and sauté for 2-4 minutes, or until the wine has reduced by about half. 4.Add arrowroot and whisk, then add almond milk and whisk. At this point, it will be very clumpy - this is normal. Transfer to a high speed blender and add nutritional yeast, salt + pepper, and vegan parmesan cheese. Blend on high until creamy and smooth. 5.Taste and adjust flavor as needed, adding more vegan parmesan or nutritional yeast for cheesiness, or salt and pepper for more overall flavor. 6.Transfer sauce back to the skillet and warm over medium-low heat until bubbly while whisking. The sauce should thicken, at which point you can lower the heat to low and simmer until pasta is cooked. If it looks too thick, thin with almond milk. If too thin, increase heat to medium to encourage thickening. 7.Add Brussels sprouts to the oven and cook for 12-15 minutes or until slightly golden brown and tender, stirring once at the 10-minute mark to encourage cooking. 8.Around this time, add pasta to boiling water and cook according to package instructions (mine took about 7-10 minutes, so I did that last. You want the pasta and Brussels to be done around the same time). 9.Once cooked, drained pasta and add directly to the sauce, along with half of the Brussels sprouts and toss to combine. Season with a bit more vegan parmesan cheese (optional) for extra flavor. 10.Serve with remaining Brussels sprouts and additional vegan parmesan cheese for flavor. I also like a bit of red pepper flake, but this is optional. 11.Best when fresh, though leftovers keep well in the refrigerator for 2-3 days. Positive News from PETA The Year 2016 In a watershed victory decade in the making, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, acknowledging a change in public attitudes, gave its final elephant performance in May and has taken all the elephants off the road. Now, we’ll keep up the pressure until all the lions, tigers, and other animals are also out of Ringling’s boxcars and cages. SeaWorld announced that it will stop breeding orcas and will phase out its orca displays. The marine park chain really had no choice: It was caught in a public relations nightmare after years of PETA protests, the release of the shocking documentary Blackfish, and revelations that it had placed spies at PETA who had tried (unsuccessfully) to incite illegal actions. Attendance at SeaWorld parks had plummeted and its stock prices had fallen some 50 percent, from over $38 a share to about $13. While the end of wild-orca breeding is a giant step in the right direction, we’ll continue campaigning until all the orcas are released into sea sanctuaries. Following an intense yearlong PETA campaign, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) pulled the plug on over 30 years of drugging, isolating, tormenting, and traumatizing baby monkeys in barbaric maternal-deprivation experiments. Our campaign entailed demonstrations; federal complaints; an ad blitz on Washington, D.C., subway trains and buses; disruptions of the NIH director’s speaking engagements; e-mails to government officials from more than a quarter-million people; and the support of celebrities, scientists, and members of Congress who contacted NIH to voice their objections to these experiments, noting that they weren’t applicable to humans and could easily be replaced with superior humanbased research methods. The New York Times also broke PETA’s investigation of the highly secretive ostrich-slaughter industry in South Africa, which supplies ostrich skins to Hermès, Prada, and other top accessory labels. Our exposé revealed that young birds are imprisoned on barren dirt feedlots, where the feathers of some are yanked out. After a terrifying journey to the slaughterhouse, the birds are electrically stunned and turned upside down, and their throats are slit. As a result of our exposé, Global Brands Group banned ostrich-derived products from its controlled brands, including Juicy Couture, Frye, Jones New York, Jennifer Lopez, and David Beckham, among many others. Our investigation of angora rabbit farms in China—which showed rabbits screaming in pain as their fur was violently ripped out—brought the angora industry to a virtual standstill after more than 220 companies announced that they would no longer sell angora wool. Recent additions to the list include Genesco (parent company to Journeys, Dockers, and many other brands), Ralph Lauren, Cremieux, Guess, Soft Surroundings, URBN brands (including Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and others), Groupe Dynamite, Nasty Gal, 525 America, James Perse Los Angeles, True Religion, and Zumiez. This is not the time to own a roadside zoo. In 2016, a PETA investigation at the Bowmanville Zoo in Ontario showed the zoo’s owner, Michael Hackenberger, whipping a young tiger over and over again. As a result of our exposé, the CBS television show Zoo canceled plans to hire him to supply animals, he was formally charged with cruelty to animals, and his zoo announced that it’s closing. We’ve also rescued dozens of bears, monkeys, and chimpanzees from other roadside zoos, including 13 bears who were saved from dismal zoos in Ohio after Gov. John Kasich signed a law strengthening requirements for keeping exotic animals. São Paulo banned fur farms and Arizona banned greyhound racing. Orange, New York, required animal abusers to register with the state. Rhode Island, California, Miami, and towns in Massachusetts, Minnesota, Oregon, Texas, and Virginia banned bullhooks. San Francisco and Asheville, North Carolina, banned all wild-animal acts. Ontario banned capturing and breeding marine mammals. And Mexico City banned wild-animal circuses. There’s now a vegan version of everything, including vegan eggs and a “raw” vegan ground beef that its makers hope to sell in the refrigerated case alongside the “real” (dead) thing. Ben & Jerry’s debuted its first vegan flavors—four of them—this year to rave reviews, Guinness‘ namesake stout is going vegan, and artisanal vegan cheese is now a “thing.” The number of vegans is skyrocketing, with millennials, in particular, most interested in making ethical food choices. France’s most famous chef, Alain Ducasse, serves a course of vegan meals in his famous Paris Athénée restaurant, and the mayor of Turin, Italy, announced that she plans to turn the town into the world’s first “vegan city”! Hello, my name is Matt Orio (just “Orio” to most people) and I work at a radio station as a sales rep as well as host mornings and afternoons on 104.1 The Edge. Being an unashamed vegan on the radio means the hell I’m given about my choice of lifestyle is slightly amplified. Every dumb meme about how vegetarians and vegans are stupid or lacking protein or b12 is something I get tagged in. I usually just let it slide most of the time. However, I find myself more and more wanting to engage these people because they seem to be lacking in general knowledge about how good veganism is and how beneficial it is for the environment, your personal health or the animals. It’s absolutely stunning the blind eye people turn away from animal cruelty, health and the planet but at the same time, these are all good things and are things that they all seem to agree with. So, why is there a disconnection? Not wanting to give up cheese or bacon? It’s not your milk and bacon is literally salted strips of a pig’s belly. I blame a large majority of this on the way all of these products were advertised to us over the last several decades (which is ironic since I work in advertising, I know). How many times were the words “cheesy and melty” stuffed down our throats? How many times were we repeatedly told that “milk does a body good”? It’s flabbergasting! Full of flabber I tell you! I went vegan after watching “Forks and Knives” and “Earthlings” which, if you haven’t seen, I highly recommend if you’re on the fence about switching your lifestyle. “Earthlings” was really the clincher. I gave up meat immediately after watching it. Then I phased out eggs and dairy over the following months. Coffee Creamer was probably the last thing I gave up (My kingdom for a vegan Amaretto coffee creamer!) and then came the next part. How can I still enjoy my favorite foods without the ingredients from animals? First step – pizza. This needed to be figured out relatively quickly! Daiya helped ease the transition there, but ultimately I grew distaste for their product (not all of their products, just their shreds) and eventually other products hit the shelves. I always loved to cook, but veganism kicked down that door and swung in with its Nutritional Yeast and the ever-so versatile cashew nut and changed the game. Cooking was now not only fun, but it was a challenge! Questions like “How can I make a vegan philly cheesesteak?” and “What’s a good buffalo wing substitute?” were among my top Google searches. Now I cook pizza on the regular (check out Instagram.com/vegan Pizza_ Enthusiast) and I experiment with new recipes weekly. I’ve made Thanksgiving dinner the last two years with a vegan Wellington as the centerpiece. Homemade Seitan is commonplace in my home. Literally anything can be made vegan. There is no excuse not to live this lifestyle as its benefits clearly outweigh the alternatives. Most importantly, as long as you have vegan pizza that’s all you need right?

---- There is more to Veganism, than simply ‘vegan dining’ ---“Is veganism a diet?” To that question, I would ask, “Is mathematics a digit?” Vegan-ism is non-violence …vegan-ism is unconditional love …vegan-ism is wisdom. If biological life is to be sustained, it would be neither loving nor wise, to ‘harm’ Earth. Whether one is going to eat “Animal X,” or not; if “Animal X” is harmed, then ‘veganism’ has been departed from. Taking an animal’s tusk, is to take that animal’s dignity. If inter-galactic aliens, imprisoned all human carnivores on this planet, and: pulled their teeth; poked them with hypodermic needles; prodded them with mysterious instruments; and, maintained their lives, merely, for the purpose of growing their teeth back, so the teeth could be extracted again and again, for eons …whom would they call upon for relief --Superman, Wonder Woman, God perhaps? Let me tell you what I think …I have seen many definitions, theories, ridiculing hypotheses, condemnations, excuses, and so on, for vegan-ism: if any person were to suffer the cruelties of animal agriculture, then that person would know, beyond any doubt, the meaning of …’vegan.’ Say what you will about health issues, quality of taste, nutritional value, and so forth; ‘Living vegan’ is living ‘in-line’ with your true compassionate self. A vegan who knows --who really knows-- does not bring any-thing into the home, without knowing: its contents; where it came from; and, whether it honors …non-violence, love and wisdom.
Vegans work on: connecting to their highest form of being. Spiritually, they know, that ingesting tortured suffering-souls, into their bodies, is a toxic affair …it is definitely not nourishment for the soul. Vegans refuse to become graveyards, for tormented souls, who did not want to die. Vegans work, for animals; to right a wrong, that is due to be made right. Animals are not human property, to do with as we please. Just as humanslavery is wrong; animal-slavery is wrong. Vegans advocate for animal’s rights and their liberation from human-imposed: imprisonment, suffering, and death. Of course, vegans examine the foods they eat, to insure that they are in their purest and healthiest form. Vegans also know that plant-based food is the best food for each and every one of us. As this New Year begins, I urge you to take a good look at ‘veganism’ and all of its goodness. I urge you to do something ‘especially new’ this year. I urge you to help: not only yourself; but, also, help us --help the animals, our planet, and the rest of the world at-large. Veganism is Hope. Veganism is Peace. Veganism is Love. Veganism is Compassion.

‘Lucky Little MISSY’ (My Innocent Seeker Sees You) Johnan Aretell Fairy Tales can, sometimes, be a serendipitous inspiration. Regarding the topic -- ‘trickery of false appearances’ – (see page 3), let us, here, share the story of ‘Lucky Little MISSY’ (My Innocent Seeker Sees You). --------------------------------
issy lived, a long time ago, in a one-room cabin, with her: father, mother, and two pets (a pig named ‘Lucky Won,’ and a rabbit M named ‘Lucky Too’). Missy was nicknamed ‘Lucky’ because she survived at birth, when her twin did not. Lucky-Missy named herself ‘Little’ for it was her ‘newest word’…and she ‘saw’ that it fit. She enjoyed… ‘seeing & saying’ things. Missy liked to say, “Everything has a mouth and words and ears,” (then she would wink an eye, and say the rest), “but not a mouth like this,” (here, she would open her mouth as big as possible, and innocently, stick out her tongue). This was Missy’s way of acknowledging Nature’s ‘Silent Words.’ Even though she did not know the word metaphor, she felt it was her ‘duty’ to periodically point-out, that there is such a thing. Her parents were enchanted every time Missy would say, “The ‘invisible hands’ of all the land, fit just right, with the ten tiny toes on my hand.” She was always seeking the ways of Mama & Papa …and even though she would say, “The world is a big-big toy,” her favorite toys were, now: walking & talking …like her favorite humans… the only two humans in her big-big world. Their cabin, was the only human-home in the forest. Missy had never, ever, seen any other human (and other humans were, so far, never spoken of …including her still-born sibling). Her only other acquaintances were the pigs in the barn, and the animals in the forest …the barn and the forest …that’s where food-animals live (food-animals, are: animals who are eaten for food, by Missy’s family.). Missy’s father was an expert pig-farmer and rabbit-catcher. (Neither ‘Lucky-won’ nor ‘Lucky-too,’ however, were allowed to be eaten …’that’ pig, and ‘that’ rabbit, were (chosen, by Lucky-Missy, to be…) ‘family.’ Our story begins, during a period of time when, Lucky Little Missy has just recently learned to walk & talk: she loves to practice both, and devised her own plan to master them. She would say to her parents, “Missy ready …I walk your talk;” or, “Tell Missy, words, …Missy hear …run like deer …be your dear.” On the eve of her birthday, Missy woke, early in the morning: And, --marching straight-as-sunshine, without hesitation, past her breakfast bowl-- stretched up to her mother’s cheek, and started, “Missy ready….” BAM! …BUMP! …BANG! Right in the middle of their precious ‘good morning’ moment -as Missy’s mother’s rosy sweet smile was mirroring the sunburst of joy in Missy’s eager gaze- the only door on their home …forcedly and forebodingly… opened with a clatter. Every eye turned to see …and there stood, a broken bloody woman, staggering in the doorway. The stumbling stranger stepped, awkwardly, into their cabin. Upon landing her -crooked foot- on their floor, one of her ears, fell off her face, and landed with a ‘splat’ upon that same crooked foot. Immediately, the piglet and rabbit scurried over to the eroding ear …Lucky-won got there first (the little pig), and promptly ate the ear …Lucky-too (the rabbit) bit the blades of grass which clung to the bloody big toe, that was bulging through the freshly-torn hole in the stranger’s shoe. That monstrous lump of limbs (their unexpected visitor), began finally -through her mangled mouth- to mumble; as the family, frantically, clumped behind the dining-table …everyone, that is, except… Little Missy. The awry woman, was desperately trying to explain her wretched circumstances. You might expect that Little Missy was ‘all ears’ to hear any fascinating new words or mysterious sounds, in that stilted story; nonetheless, the blistered lady’s bumbling narrative, faded beyond Missy’s notice. Little Missy was the only one in the room who was not, fragile from fright. For, Missy was inside herself, having a profound realization - her jaw dropped open - as she remembered the image of the ‘butchered’ lady being ‘nibbled on’ by the household pets.
The wind was whistling through the open cabin doorway, and seemed to lift Missy’s eyelids open, as Missy’s mind returned to the room. Missy missed the story: of how the woman’s unfortunate family, was traveling to the forest, in a wagon that overturned, and rolled over a cliff. The ‘wagon-family’ (the father, mother, and their baby) would all be well. They needed help, that is all …and would be sleeping this night, in the barn. Missy’s dramatic inner-revelation, was confirmed, when she learned that the ‘other people’ (eat-able people), would be living, ‘in the barn.’

Missy’s brain, busily a-hum, quickly calculated this conundrum. Wildly puzzling pieces of mental-imagery, flashed on the screen of Missy’s mind; and assembled a shocking picture: “Other humans …from where …how…?... Hmmm? But… ‘it --that thing’…looks cut-n-ready to cook… like …forest-n-barn animals…same as when Momma… …piggy Little & rabbit Little …were already eating …?... So … ‘other people’ … are” …………..(her eyes got wide & round)..………… “…food?!”
‘Lucky Little MISSY’ (My Innocent Seeker Sees You) Continued. Missy whispered softly, but the breeze blew her breath away from the ears of the others, “Everything eats something, but nothing eats …Missy’s family. Missy will never be eaten by a bear, or a forest-cat …I am not afraid anymore. Missy, Mama & Papa, Lucky pig-n-rabbit …we will all live forever …because we are not …food.”
Early the next morning, (as usual) Missy got her next chance, to: listen & run …an errand like a deer. Missy’s mother’s directions were: “Missy, go to the barn and fetch the new baby, for your birthday dinner tonight.” Missy didn’t walk, she did not run …she skipped in joyous jubilation. “I am so happy to not be …food,” she said aloud. Then she began, for the first time in her life …to sing. She didn’t even know that singing was a thing. “I have food to …eat. I am …birthday. My home is the sun. My home is ..talk & walk… for Missy, on this yummy day.” The ‘wagon-baby’ was resting on the straw-grass in the barn, and the baby’s mother and father were outside, behind the barn, repairing the wagon. The ‘new baby pig’ ran playfully around Missy’s feet. Missy knelt down, kissed the pig on the snout, and continued to sing, “No not you, little piggy; not you today …best-est food, for best-est fun.” Missy, gleefully, scooped up the new ‘wagon-baby’ and, danced it to her mother, presenting it for the evening feast. At twilight-meal, on the edge of darkness, Missy felt no birthday-disappointment, over dining on: greens and roots and seeds and fruits. ‘Lucky’ …that is how she felt, lucky that… ‘forever off her menu’ …would be: roasted baby humans, pigs, and rabbits (and deer and birds and fish...). Missy resolved, due to the chaos of her birthday adventures: “No good, eating blood. If we must bleed it, I will not eat it.” Missy’s parents, were profoundly inspired by Missy’s mysterious and courageous birthday insights; And, as their birthday present to her, agreed to live by Missy’s new resolution. Also, they wrote this song, to commemorate their life-changing day: Blood is not Our table’s art Blood is for: A beating heart Missy’s Birthday Changed our mood Blood, forever, from today: Will never be our food. ----------------

I hope that vegans will strengthen their resolve to “live vegan.” And, if you are a pre-vegan (one who has, not yet, made the full commitment to: live without violence upon animals); then, I hope you will soon decide to live: cruelty-free. Because, there are many other innocent-seekers, like Missy, who will learn from your example …your actions are ‘you.’ Each ‘you’ in the world, is bound to a vegan-destiny …the destiny of: non-violence.

I hope all of you reflect, deeply & well, upon your intentions, now; in order to set them -for manifestation- in the year ahead. I hope, when you contemplate this, that you will devote the time to --think-- of: empathy & compassion. I hope you --think-- of Mother Earth. I hope you --think-- of “all” our fellow earthlings … naturally, I am using “all” to remind you to --think-- of animals as your expanded family and friends …so that all your --thinking-- will blossom into loving feelings.
