“Albuquerque Autumn” …is in the air. Leaves …are changing colors, now, …letting go …‘leave’-ing their green summer life behind, …flying, as newborn angels on the wing, to adorn their next cradle …the skin of mother earth …nesting upon her …as a wintry wreath …like a warm sweater, around her. Nature is a continuum of metamorphosis; yet, “the fall” of the year, ...points, profoundly,… to the “temporary-ness” of a biological life …animal life. Galaxies go on “living” for billions of years. Animal-life is short-lived …must we also heap suffering on it? The absurdity of that question, turns my focus to “change & renewal” as I put these words to paper. Humanity is destined to ‘leave’ animal-abuse behind; and, ‘fall’ into the motherly arms, of… vegan grace. Change & renewal?... world-change is, quite literally, happening …on your vegan plate. Eating plants, means: you feel healthier, in body, mind, & spirit. Eating plants, means: mercy upon animals. Eating plants, means: healing …for Earth. So you see, by eating vegan food: you are being an advocate for positive change. I, once again, hope and ask: that you also plant the seeds of compassion, daily, in any way you can. Together, we ARE doing this. We ARE attaining a vegan world.
Livegan, -- Nancy
ASSISTANT EDITOR’S NOTE “Love me; and, love my fellow animalearthlings, the cows, the chickens, the pigs, the wild deer, geese, fish …and all. We animals, may look different, one from another; but, we are all the same, in our wanting to be: free; loved; and, allowed to live without suffering.” Livegan, -- Arwen

Think fast. Your neighbor’s cat has injured a bird. You’ve managed to scare off the cat, and now it’s just you and the bird, who’s dazed and bleeding slightly. What do you do? Many of you know the answer. And not only do you how to get to your local wildlife rehabilitation center, you also have the center’s phone number on speed dial, just in case. But what if you’re out of town and away from your known resources?
Or what if you’ve encountered an animal that your local center won’t accept - say, an injured bobcat, perhaps? Animal Help Now is the country’s first wildlife emergency application. It’s available for free on the internet at www.AnimalHelpNow.org (www.AHNow.org, for short) and as both an Android and iPhone app. Think of Animal Help Now as a high-tech wildlife 911. You open the app and tap Wildlife Emergency. The app quickly lists the contact information for the nearest wildlife emergency professionals. You tap a phone number, and you’re on your way. It’s that easy. The list of helpers includes state-licensed wildlife rehabilitators, federally licensed wildlife rehabilitators, wildlife rescues and hotlines, and - in many states, including New Mexico - government agencies that may assist with wildlife emergencies. (If you see orphaned ducklings frantically running along a highway, for instance, you will want a sheriff or state patrol.) Some of you at this point “get it”. You’ve encountered injured or distressed wildlife, and you know that at that moment nothing is more important than finding the right help right away. You may be like me, in that animals in need tend to throw themselves into your path. I’ve helped scores of injured and distressed wild animals, especially since moving to Colorado in 1991. Rattlesnakes, turtles, pigeons, geese, mice, voles, prairie dogs, … even a red-tailed hawk! I used to carry a golf club to euthanize animals whom I could not otherwise help. A snake with a broken spine on a long, hot stretch of eastern Colorado road comes to mind. I didn’t know what else to do. I actually still carry the club, just in case, but I no longer struggle to find assistance if it is indeed available. I’ve used Animal Help Now dozens of times since we created it. The club, not once. It was not just my personal experience that revealed to me the need for an easy-to-use animal emergency app. (And, yes, in its first incarnation and actually up until last year, Animal Help Now could also be used for domestic emergencies - including cats, dogs, cows, chickens and pigs.) My professional experience clearly confirmed the need. As long-time executive director of Rocky Mountain Animal Defense, a now-defunct (but very effective in its time) Colorado-based animal rights organization, I saw day-in and day-out that people who encounter animals in need do not know what to do to help. They just don’t know. And even my colleagues and I in the RMAD office would often have to do a lot of legwork to help out if people were calling us from outside our Front Range comfort zone. Some significant anthropogenic threats to wildlife, such as catastrophic climate change and conversion of wildlife habitat to human use, are essentially outside the purview of Animal Help Now. The animals we are able to help are those who people encounter in their day-to-day lives: the bird who hits a window, the baby rabbit injured by the neighbor’s dog, the raccoons by the side of the road whose mother has been killed by a car.
NM Vegan | 06
Here are some startling statistics, though we do note that the second and third figures are the subject of significant variation: • One billion birds are estimated to be killed in window strikes in the United States each year. A billion is a hard number to imagine, so, as difficult as it may be to believe, a billion a year is 30 fatal window strikes per second. • About four times that many are killed by cats and dogs. • About a half billion are killed by motor vehicle strikes. The number of animals injured from these same causes is likely in the billions, as well. It is no wonder that usage of Animal Help Now has doubled nearly every year since we launched. Last year we assisted in an estimated 26,000 emergencies. Animal Help Now is but one component of the field of wildlife emergency response and treatment. This community includes wildlife rehabilitators and veterinary professionals, and the people who support them, including donors, administrative staff and others. In some areas, the wildlife emergency community it includes in-the-field rescuers and wildlife transporters. Several parts of the country are served by volunteer-based wildlife hotlines. The Dallas/Fort Worth area has an excellent one, as does (jointly) Missouri and Illinois. Many of the coastal stranding and entanglement hotlines are run by volunteers or government agencies. Animal Help Now lists these helpers to users in those areas. If you use our app on any coast anywhere in the United States, you will be given quick access to whichever marine animal hotlines serve that coastline, just in case your emergency involves a sea turtle, a stranded dolphin or even an oil spill. Animal Help Now has an added benefit for dispatch operators, animal shelters, vet clinics and other entities that occasionally or frequently field wildlife emergency calls. It is our “referral” functionality, which allows a person in one location to help a person in a different location. So if I’m working for New Mexico Wildlife Center in Los Alamos and I get a call from eastern Arizona for help with an injured coyote, I can use Animal Help Now to point the caller to people in her area who can help. Animal Help Now is a vegan organization. Our policy states: Animal Help Now respects and promotes respect for all animals. As such, the organization employs a vegan approach to its messaging and purchasing, including food purchased for meetings and events, and in its receipt of donated goods and services.
But as you know all is not well in the world. And as you also know, even if you haven’t articulated it, human-created problems often defy elegant solutions. (“Elegant” here in the sense of ingenious, clean, simple.) Just today a person telling me about her use of the app said she felt bad about cutting up mealworms to feed to a Carolina wren she had rescued. I wrote back telling her I feel the same way. And I said it hits even closer to home for me in the case of carnivore rehabilitation. This is where education and prevention enter the picture. The more we work together to mitigate the threats facing wildlife, the better our world will be. Cont’d on page 12

As many individuals have already realized, the most difficult aspect of living with Vegan Ethics is not the food – the recipes and making meals, the eating out and finding adequate calories and protein – the real challenge is deeply rooted in our nature as social animals. When the conscious shift of values sparks and aligns one self to adhere to a new set of morals, the action can be received as radical, particularly with our closest loved ones.
Of course, there are the blessed exceptions who are fortunate with their immediate relations, having a built-in support system, so to speak; they are the lucky ones, I suppose. But most of us, we were born into and raised by a flesh and byproduct-loving tribe. We sought our own truth through experience and empathy, self-care, and compassion. We had to realize our own path was not in adherence with our social norm. A part of us had to die so we could be reborn. That is the sentiment of the Conscious Choice to 'Live Vegan’. No particular road is perfect. Every journey is flawed by the very nature of our human and terrestrial existence on Earth. That imperfection does not negate our purpose. In the absence of understanding or acceptance, we work to replace our communion with honesty and sincerity. We should not censor our own emotional responses to the layers of social and biological oppression – we should rejoice in our ability to be awake and present in times of deceit and delusion. This peaceful, uniting movement towards compassion and justice should be revered as a catalytic era where we have the good fortune of actively participating. Actively choosing to live differently from what we have been conditioned to normalize, violence is not the way of my people. Let me be clear: Self defense is not rooted in violence, nor is pacifism rooted in peace. Compassion and Justice must both be respectfully acknowledged and integrated into modern societies, otherwise our current state of living has almost no chance for survival. We are on the brink of a unique and introspective time. Hopefully many of us are already becoming, and even moreso immersed in the momentum of eminent change. This small reflection is a Thank You Note to everyone who has already accepted the challenge, and working towards a conscious paradigm shift. With your everlasting respect for life, love and compassion, your stickers and your chalk, your charm and social skills, we are reaching more and more people everyday, humans and other species alike. One of the biggest truths I have affirmed for myself in recent years is the indisputable overlap of the macro- /microcosm of reality, that there are many nuclei within proximity of one another, many multicellular Beings that manifest a compelling force, bringing about significant influential energies. Let us be a piece of that fabric, relentlessly redefining reality and existence. Like so many of our inspiring and well-known advocates for positive social progress, let us embrace our capacity to evolve as a species, and refine our intellectual, emotional, physical, and spiritual talents. Symbiosis, autonomy and cooperation are equally possible in a vegan world, as we learn to embrace new moral standards that nurture the planet as a whole.

Cooking With Compassion, is one of my most satisfying experiences, in life. Cooking With Compassion is a “cooking demonstration” that shows how easily, you yourself, can prepare vegan meals …everyday …all day. Class admission is free. The class is located at Natural Grocers/Vitamin Cottage: 4420 Wyoming Blvd NE, Albuquerque NM, 87111 (and is, currently, happening one Sunday per month*). At Cooking With Compassion, we learn to prepare easy, quick, delicious, & nutritious vegan meals (that attendees get to taste); we offer tastings, too, of selected vegan products, that are available at Natural Grocers/Vitamin Cottage. Also, you may obtain “product coupons” and free information about various aspects of veganism.
The class has been attended by persons of all ages, genders, & diet types; who are desiring to learn more about eating plant-based foods. Questions are always welcomed, as are ‘menu & recipe requests’ for future classes. “Any recipe that is carnivorous, can be prepared vegan-style,” --Nancy. *{You may check out our FB page for upcoming Cooking with Compassion events.}

Animal Help Now has an ambitious education program focused on helping humans be better neighbors to wildlife. For instance, on window strikes, did you know that affixing a bird sticker to a window has virtually no deterrent effect on bird flight behavior? The fix is easy, but it’s not quite that simple. See the Resources page on www.AHNow.org for the full story, and for other useful information, such as how to create your own wildlife rescue kit for your car or home. This year we also completed the launch of our new functionality that directs people who need help with a wildlife conflict squirrels in the attic, skunks under the porch, etc. - to humane wildlife professionals who can assist. I encourage you to download our app (search stores for Animal Help Now) and bookmark our website (www.AHNow.org). Please give us a good review, if you’re so inclined. Check us out on social media. And even though we’re mostly volunteers, please consider a donation. You can claim to have been an early investor in the world’s first wildlife 911 system! Finally, if you want to work for animals in hands-off ways but you don’t know what to do or where to start, please get in touch with me. There are about a thousand things that need to be done. Thanks for being vegan. You
rock!

The first time I attended a rodeo, I was appalled, by the cruelty, to the animal-entertainers in “the show.” I said to the person who invited me there, “That doesn’t seem very nice. It appears repulsively indignant, …to be roped, taken off one’s feet, dragged down and restrained!” I felt such overwhelming pity for the animal, that I had to take my leave. I do not understand why “people insulting animals” is openly recognized as: legitimate entertainment? It was horrible to see the cruelty and pain inflicted on those innocent, yet, unfortunate souls. Rodeos are, simply, another human excuse to exploit animals, for the purposes of sport, amusement and financial gain. Naturally, vegans object; and, do not support rodeos. Calf roping, bull riding, steer wrestling, and bronco riding are, obviously, all forms of animal abuse. Zapping animals with electric “hot shots” …giving them steroids …”back stage” cages & cages for transport …poking & prodding …wrestling them to the ground …these actions are, plainly, cruel and malicious. The animals endure falls, bumps, & bangs, that can and do: injure their backs & necks; break ribs; and, puncture their lungs. These events also cause some of the animals to have aneurysms and heart-attacks, from the stress. Does that sound like fun for the animals? The answer is NO! There is much in our society, that needs changing. We need to educate minds, inspire hearts, and improve our laws. Veganism is a movement of respect, compassion, and love …for every living being, (human and non-human, alike). What you can do: Do not support rodeos (do not attend rodeos; do not gift rodeos with money or praise). When a rodeo comes to town, send written statements: to local government (city, county, state, etc.); to the rodeo’s commercial sponsors; and, to the rodeo’s venue-facility; …voicing your opinion, on the cruelty of the event. Organize peaceful protesting demonstrations: weeks/days prior to the event; and/or, during the event. Spread the word: select “Rodeos” as a research topic, for school assignment; submit freelance writing to periodical publishers. Let’s work to: ban rodeos …everywhere & forever.

They Asked, “Why Don’t You Like The Zoo, Circus, or Aquarium?” Nancy Arenas As a child, I often attended the zoo, the circus, and the aquarium. Wild animals really are charming & adorable, with amazing abilities. face to face with them …well, I wasn’t going to encounter an African backyard, of Brooklyn NY. Zoos have that rare & special attraction. the animals, up-close, is a thrilling experience.
I loved it. And being Lion in my Observing
But, zoos do not allow the public to get so up-close, as to observe the full truth, about a zoo animal’s quality of life. Through the non-suspecting eyes of an innocent child, zoo animals appear happy and cared for. But, zoos project a false image to the public; i.e., the zoo wants us to believe, that the zoo cares for, and protects the zoo-animals, with genuine respect. In truth, zoo animals, are maintained in brutal captivity. To begin its zoo life, an animal is stolen from its home, or, …it is born in captivity …it is born in prison …separated from its natural habitat. Zoo animals are surrounded by a man-made artificial facsimile, of that which is truly their natural environment. The zoo-home …is a fake-home. Yes, actually, the animals in zoos, circuses, and aquariums, are in jail. Though they are innocent, they are held hostage, for the sake of selfish human profit. We love seeing exotic animals from far away lands; but, we have been falsely led to believe that zoos, circuses and aquariums are a happy place. They are a nightmare for the animals. It is time for the world to openly acknowledge this truth, and to end the massive incarceration and abuse of wild animals. Animals are not instruments, for human use; they are neither quad-cycles, toys, nor living dolls. Animals don’t want to be forced to entertain us, with our own choreography. They don’t want to be confined, like sculptures in a museum, to satisfy our joy for displayed things. They don’t want to be away from their home and their family. Each animal, like each human, just wants to be free …to be its natural & unencumbered self. Let’s boycott these establishments that are making a professional business out of animal souls. Let’s get these animals home, or to a sanctuary, where they can live their lives with self-respect. Please don’t attend zoos, circuses or aquariums. If attendance declines; then, their illegitimate business, will cease. Animals belong to themselves, that is all. May our children not be deceived by the same lies we have been told. Let our children see a better future, where humans no longer torment animal souls. Investigate & know: •
Cages are not animal friendly.
•
Confinement is not humane.
•
Animals in zoos, circuses and aquariums are isolated.
•
Unnatural demands are placed on animals in these places.
•
Zoos, circuses, & aquariums, traumatize animals.
•
Animals are not comfortably “at home” in zoos, circuses, or aquariums.
•
Get off their back! Animals don’t want to “give rides.”
•
Put yourself in their “hoofs.” Would you want to be: confined; taken from your home & family; made to perform on demand; carry someone on your back, all day long; live a fake life? We all know, the answer is, “NO!”
